Abstract

Effects of solution pH and molecular oxygen on the quantum yields of methylene blue-sensitized photolysis of diazonium salt have been studied in aqueous solutions, using thioacetamide as an activator. The quantum yield increased with an increase in pH when other parameters were kept constant. The presence of oxygen at pH ( 7) dominance of the pathway of oxygen quenching of the excited dye triplet caused its suppression. The polymerization of acrylamide in the deaerated solution was readily initiated by dye-sensitized photolysis. A mechanism involving an electron transfer to diazonium cation from unprotonated semimethylene blue formed by a photoredox reaction between excited triplet dye and thioacetamide was in line with these observation.

Abstract

We have measured two-dimensional Raman intensity images of laser-recrystallized polycrystalline silicon islands on insulators by a scanning Raman microprobe. It is found that crystallites with about ten µm size grow along the scanning direction of an annealing laser. The crystallographic orientations of the crystallites have been determined by Raman microprobe polarization measurements.

Abstract

The variation of crystal quality with depth in laser-annealed polycrystalline Si films has been examined for angle-lapped specimens using Raman spectroscopy. Changes in the Raman shape and intensity were analyzed by a convolution method assuming that the strain and structural disorder vary with depth. From this analysis we determined the distribution of the residual strains and structural disorders in the polycrystalline layers recrstallized solid-epitaxially.

Abstract

A novel laser-induced CVD apparatus with a direct pattern writing ability by a pyrolytic decomposition of SiH4 has been developed. With this equipment, a CW argon laser with an output power of 20 W was used. The argon laser beam, which provides localized heating of the substrate, was utilized to decompose gas-phase molecules, resulting in film deposition. By using this equipment, direct pattern writing of polycrystalline silicon with a smooth surface on silicon substrate covered with SiO2 layer has been realized with a high deposition rate as well as good controllability and crystallinity.

313. Comparison of Standard and Low-Dose Separation-by-Implanted-Oxygen Substrates for 0.15 µmSOI MOSFET Applications

Abstract

The influence of buried oxide thickness on short-channel effects in silicon-on-insulator metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (SOI MOSFET's) is investigated. It is shown by analytical modeling and numerical simulation that, although a thin buried oxide helps to reduce the charge-sharing component of source and drain electric fields through the oxide layer, substrate depletion underneath the thin buried oxide counteracts the oxide thinning. Although this effect is desired below the source and drain regions to maintain the SOI inherent low junction capacitances, it is detrimental to short-channel-effect suppression. The calculated results are experimentally confirmed on 0.1 µm SOI MOSFET's fabricated on both standard and low-dose separation-by-implanted-oxygen (SIMOX) substrates. A new structure for 0.15 µm SOI MOSFET applications on a thin buried oxide substrate is proposed in which substrate depletion below the channel-forming region can be suppressed locally using self-aligned deep ion implantation.

314. Inducement of mitogen-activated protein kinases in frozen shoulders.

Abstract

Abstract Background  Mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases are well-known molecules that play key roles in mechanical stress signals during skeletal development. To test our hypothesis that the synovium in frozen shoulders is induced by MAP kinases, immunohistochemical analyses for detecting expression and signal transduction of MAP kinases were performed in synovial tissue obtained from the rotator interval (RI) in frozen shoulders. Methods  Synovial tissues were examined from 10 frozen shoulder patients with a mean age of 55.4 years (46–62 years). Synovial tissues between the long head of the biceps tendon (LHB) and the RI in frozen shoulders were stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and then examined with immunohistochemical staining. Extracellular signal-regulated (ERK), the Jun N-terminal (JNK), and p38 mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases, nuclear factor κB (NF-κB), p50, CD29 (β1-integrin), matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-3, interleukin-6 (IL-6), CD56, CD68, S-100, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were analyzed to detect expression patterns. Results  H&E showed vascular proliferation with fibrin and fibrous tissue in the synovium of frozen shoulders. ERK was expressed in the epithelial cells of vascular tissue, and JNK was expressed strongly in the interstitial cells around vascular tissue; p38 MAPK was not expressed. NF-κB was expressed in vascular tissue, and IL-6 was expressed around vascular tissue. CD29 (β1-integrin) was expressed in vascular tissue and in superficial cells of synovial tissue. MMP-3 and VEGF were expressed on the surface layer of synovial tissue and vascular tissue, and CD68 was expressed on the surface layer. Nerverelated proteins, CD56 and S-100, were expressed weakly. Conclusions  Mechanical stress on the LHB and RI in the shoulder may induce ERK and JNK to express NF-κB by CD29 to develop capsule contracture, producing MMP-3, IL-6, and VEGF.
