Hematological indices assist in predicting clinical outcomes. To explore changes of hematological indices on oropharynx squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) patients received radiotherapy and their association with survival. The white blood cell count (WBC), absolute neutrophil count (ANC), absolute lymphocyte count (ALC), hemoglobin (Hb), platelet (Plt), albumin (Alb), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) at baseline, 1-, 3-, 6- and 12-months follow-up were retrospectively collected. The trajectory of indices was described. A linear model with random effects was to describe indices’ changing rate and trend. Univariable Cox analysis was to assess the correlation between indices and survival. Of the 85 patients, WBC and ALC dropped during acute phase and gradually recovered, while NLR and PLR increased during acute phase and subsequently declined (all p < .01). Higher absolute value of nutritional indices (Alb and Hb) was associated with better prognosis (p < .05). In contrast, patients with higher absolute value or upward trend of inflammatory indices (ANC, Plt, NLR and PLR) had worse survival (p < .05). The short- and long-term changes of indices differed in OPSCC patients received radiotherapy, and absolute values and dynamic changes of indices had the potential to be prognostic factors.

This study aimed to investigate the survival outcomes and potential prognostic factors of patients with temporal bone squamous cell carcinoma (TBSCC) treated at our institution.We retrospectively included patients who were diagnosed with TBSCC between 2008 and 2019. The Kaplan-Meier (KM) method was used to describe overall survival (OS), and the association between baseline characteristics and prognoses was examined using Cox proportional hazards models.Fifty consecutive patients with TBSCC were included in this study. The results showed that patients with advanced modified Pittsburgh (MPB)- T classifications had a poorer prognosis (T3 vs. T1-2: HR: 2.81, 95% CI: 0.34-23.43; T4 vs. T1-2: HR: 7.25, 95% CI: 0.95-55.41; p = 0.041). Meanwhile, middle ear squamous cell carcinoma (MESCC) showed a significantly worse prognosis than external auditory canal squamous cell carcinoma (EACSCC, HR: 2.65, 95% CI: 1.04-6.76, p = 0.04).MESCC and advanced MPB-T classifications might be considered predictors of unfavorable outcomes in patients with TBSCC, indicating that special attention should be paid to the original tumor subsite and tumor extension in the management of patients with TBSCC.

Understanding the association between sleep traits and tinnitus could help prevent and provide appropriate interventions against tinnitus. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the relationship between different sleep patterns and tinnitus.A cross-sectional analysis using baseline data (2006-2010, n = 168,064) by logistic regressions was conducted to evaluate the association between sleep traits (including the overall health sleep score and five sleep behaviors) and the occurrence (yes/no), frequency (constant/transient), and severity (upsetting/not upsetting) of tinnitus. Further, a prospective analysis of participants without tinnitus at baseline (n = 9581) was performed, who had been followed-up for 7 years (2012-2019), to assess the association between new-onset tinnitus and sleep characteristics. Moreover, a subgroup analysis was also carried out to estimate the differences in sex by dividing the participants into male and female groups. A sensitivity analysis was also conducted by excluding ear-related diseases to avoid their confounding effects on tinnitus (n = 102,159).In the cross-sectional analysis, participants with "current tinnitus" (OR: 1.13, 95% CI: 1.04-1.22, p = 0.004) had a higher risk of having a poor overall healthy sleep score and unhealthy sleep behaviors such as short sleep durations (OR: 1.09, 95% CI: 1.04-1.14, p0.001), late chronotypes (OR: 1.09, 95% CI: 1.05-1.13, p0.001), and sleeplessness (OR: 1.16, 95% CI: 1.11-1.22, p0.001) than those participants who "did not have current tinnitus." However, this trend was not obvious between "constant tinnitus" and "transient tinnitus." When considering the severity of tinnitus, the risk of "upsetting tinnitus" was obviously higher if participants had lower overall healthy sleep scores (OR: 1.31, 95% CI: 1.13-1.53, p0.001). Additionally, short sleep duration (OR: 1.22, 95% CI: 1.12-1.33, p0.001), late chronotypes (OR: 1.13, 95% CI: 1.04-1.22, p = 0.003), and sleeplessness (OR: 1.43, 95% CI: 1.29-1.59, p0.001) showed positive correlations with "upsetting tinnitus." In the prospective analysis, sleeplessness presented a consistently significant association with "upsetting tinnitus" (RR: 2.28, p = 0.001). Consistent results were observed in the sex subgroup analysis, where a much more pronounced trend was identified in females compared with the males. The results of the sensitivity analysis were consistent with those of the cross-sectional and prospective analyses.Different types of sleep disturbance may be associated with the occurrence and severity of tinnitus; therefore, precise interventions for different types of sleep disturbance, particularly sleeplessness, may help in the prevention and treatment of tinnitus.

Motivated by the problem of optimization of force-field systems in physics using large-scale computer simulations, we consider exploration of a deterministic complex multivariate response surface. The objective is to find input combinations that generate output close to some desired or "target" vector. In spite of reducing the problem to exploration of the input space with respect to a one-dimensional loss function, the search is nontrivial and challenging due to infeasible input combinations, high dimensionalities of the input and output space and multiple "desirable" regions in the input space and the difficulty of emulating the objective function well with a surrogate model. We propose an approach that is based on combining machine learning techniques with smart experimental design ideas to locate multiple good regions in the input space.

Decision makers’ behavioral preferences have always been important in coordinating the supply chain. Decision makers need to choose a partner wisely to increase the profitability of the entire supply chain, especially in the competitive e-commerce environment. In this paper, we examine a two-echelon e-commerce supply chain with one retailer and one supplier using the most popular wholesale price contract to facilitate collaboration. Traditional research has shown that the classical expectation model cannot coordinate the supply chain. We apply the focus theory of choice to describe the retailer’s behavior as a follower, and we examine the impact of the retailer’s pricing decisions on the supplier under different focus preferences and the coordination for the entire supply chain. The lower the parameter φ, which represents the degree of positivity, and the higher the parameter κ, which represents the level of confidence, the closer the profit of the whole supply chain is to the coordination result—both are visualized through numerical experiments and images. In the case of φ determination, the lower the κ, the better the supply chain coordination. The finding implies that the retailer may be able to coordinate the supply chain and produce better results than the expectation model when he or she makes choices using a positive evaluation system that includes both higher levels of optimism and lower levels of confidence. The findings of the FTC model can simultaneously offer a theoretical foundation for expanding collaboration among supply chain participants and management insights for decision makers to choose cooperation partners.

The aim of this study was to elucidate the mechanism underlying the effects of Kukoamine A (KuA) treatment on endotoxin-induced lung injury/inflammation. The study was performed in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-exposed mouse models of lung injury and LPS-induced alveolar epithelial cell model. Relevant kits were used to detect levels of inflammation-related indicators, oxidative stress indicators, and mitochondrial function. Hematoxylin and eosin staining was to detect lung injury. Then, C-C motif chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5) overexpression plasmid was transfected into alveolar epithelial cells to investigate the mechanism of KuA in lung injury. The results showed that LPS induction increased the expression of inflammatory factors, oxidative stress markers, and mitochondrial dysfunction in both animal and cellular models. In the mouse model, KuA treatment improved lung tissue injury, decreased wet-to-dry ratio and MPO levels, reduced the expression of inflammatory factors, and ameliorated oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. The protective effect of KuA in the cell model remained whereas was markedly reversed after CCR5 overexpression. Taken together, KuA might improve LPS-induced lung injury by inhibiting CCR5. This might also provide a novel theory for KuA in the treatment of lung injury.

In this work, experiments and comprehensive insights into the proposed covering liquid method to intensify self-preservation effect for methane (CH4) storage are presented. The CH4 hydrate decomposition percentage was 17.6% with the pressure of 0.61 MPa after 12 h at 266.0 K without a covering liquid, which can be reduced to 12.4%, 13.8%, 13.0%, and 8.3% with the pressure of 0.26 MPa, 0.33 MPa, 0.51 MPa, and 0.37 MPa by covering with tetrahydrofuran (THF), cyclopentane (CP), cyclohexane, and n-tetradecane, respectively. When the temperature for CH4 hydrate decomposition was 274.2 K, covering with THF, CP, cyclohexane, and n-tetradecane failed to inhibit CH4 hydrate decomposition. The results suggested that the covering liquid may form a new solid layer (a hydrate layer or other solidified layer) around the CH4 hydrate, which inhibit CH4 transfer below the freezing point of water. However, the new solid layer cannot resist the fast transfer of CH4 from decomposed CH4 hydrate above the freezing point of water. The same phenomenon was also observed in a sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS)-dry solution CH4 hydrate formation system. Therefore, the covering method can only intensify the self-preservation effect below the freezing point of water, but cannot generate a self-preservation effect.
