Abstract

Objective: The aim of our study was to investigate salivary tissue factor (TF) activity and oxidant-antioxidant status, which is an important defense system, in saliva samples collected from patients with oral lichen planus (OLP), and to determine the relationship between the antioxidant system and TF activity in OLP. Materials and Methods: Saliva samples were collected from patients with OLP (n=20) and healthy subjects (n=13). TF activity, lipid peroxidation (LPO), nitric oxide (NO), glutathione (GSH) levels, glutathione S-transferase (GST), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities were measured. Results: NO levels and GST activities were increased, whereas GSH levels and SOD activities were decreased, when compared with healthy subjects in the saliva samples collected from patients with OLP. In addition, TF activity was increased in the OLP group compared with the control group. Conclusion: The results revealed that the salivary oxidant-antioxidant balance was disrupted in parallel with the increase in TF activity in patients with OLP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background Rejected samples lead to prolonged turnaround time and delayed diagnosis and treatment of patients. This study was conducted to determine minimum acceptable sample volume in Sarstedt brand coagulation tubes to reduce high sample rejection rate. Methods Blood samples were drawn from 20 participants (10 healthy volunteers and 10 patients receiving oral anticoagulant) into coagulation tubes. Six samples were taken from each participant, with tube fill volumes of 100%, 90%, 80%, 70%, 60%, and 50%. Prothrombin time (PT), active partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), and fibrinogen tests were analyzed. Results According to quality performance specifications, the tube fill volume must be at least 70% for PT and aPTT and 50% for fibrinogen. There was no statistical difference in samples from healthy volunteers for PT, aPTT, and fibrinogen tests when the minimum tube fill volume was at least 80%, 90%, and 50%, respectively. These percentages were 50%, 70%, and 60%, respectively, in patients receiving oral anticoagulant. Conclusions Sarstedt tubes meet quality standard specifications at a 70% fill rate for PT and aPTT and a 50% fill rate for fibrinogen. Comprehensive studies with larger populations are needed to accept these values as sample acceptance criteria for the laboratory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

314. Infarct volumes of patients with acute ischemic stroke receiving direct oral anticoagulants due to non-valvular atrial fibrillation

Abstract

Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) have been shown to decrease the risk of ischemic stroke in non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This study aims to investigate whether DOACs result in a significant change in lesion volume and the severity of the subsequent disability in patients who have experienced a stroke. Methods: The study included a total of 137 patients with NVAF and acute stroke. The cohort included 76 patients using DOACs, 21 patients using acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), and 40 patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation (NDAF) who did not use antiaggregants or anticoagulants. Diffusion-weighted MRI was performed 6–12 hours after the first stroke symptoms and infarct volumes were measured by two independent observers. Baseline National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score, modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score at discharge and period of hospitalization were calculated. Results: When patients using DOACs due to NVAF and patients with NDAF were compared, the volumes of patients using DOACs (median 7.8 vs 23.1 cm3; P ≤ 0.01) were statistically significantly smaller. However, there was no difference in volume between ASA users (median 16.9 cm3; P = 0.16) and patients with NDAF. The DOACs group was significantly different compared to the NDAF group in terms of NIHSS scores (median 4.4 vs 8.3; P ≤ 0.01) and mRS scores at discharge (median 1.7 vs 2.7; P ≤ 0.01), and period of hospitalization (median 6.4 vs 10.4 days; P ≤ 0.01). Conclusion: We observe, while using DOACs, the infarct volumes of patients who experience stroke are smaller than those with NDAF and using ASA, as well as mRS scores at discharge are low and length of hospital stay is short.

Abstract

The majority of bone angiosarcomas are primary tumors while secondary angiosarcomas arise after radiation therapy or bone infarctus. This article presents a case of malignant transformation of monostotic fibrous dysplasia into angiosarcoma. An 80-year-old female presented with pain on right cruris. Radiological examination revealed a lesion with lytic areas and destruction of cortical bone on right tibia. Gross and histopathological examination showed two areas with an abrupt transition. The solid component was composed of curved, immature bony trabeculae in a fibroblastic stroma. The other component involved epitheloid cells forming slit-like vascular spaces. The diagnosis of angiosarcoma and fibrous dysplasia was given. Malignant transformation of fibrous dysplasia into angiosarcoma is extremely rare; as this is the sixth case in the existing literature. Prognosis of fibrous dysplasia is generally good and less than 1% of the patients develop a malignant tumor. Therefore, patients with fibrous dysplasia should be offered a life-long follow-up.

344. Qubit state transfer via discrete-time quantum walks

Abstract

We propose a scheme for perfect transfer of an unknown qubit state via the discrete-time quantum walk on a line or a circle. For this purpose, we introduce an additional coin operator which is applied at the end of the walk. This operator does not depend on the state to be transferred. We show that perfect state transfer over an arbitrary distance can be achieved only if the walk is driven by an identity or a flip coin operator. Other biased coin operators and Hadamard coin allow perfect state transfer over finite distances only. Furthermore, we show that quantum walks ending with a perfect state transfer are periodic., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The present paper proposes a new and systematic approach to the so-called black box group methods in computational group theory. Instead of a single black box, we consider categories of black boxes and their morphisms. This makes new classes of black box problems accessible. For example, we can enrich black box groups by actions of outer automorphisms. As an example of application of this technique, we construct Frobenius maps on black box groups of untwisted Lie type in odd characteristic (Section 6) and inverse-transpose automorphisms on black box groups encrypting ${\rm (P)SL}_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$. One of the advantages of our approach is that it allows us to work in black box groups over finite fields of big characteristic. Another advantage is explanatory power of our methods; as an example, we explain Kantor's and Kassabov's construction of an involution in black box groups encrypting ${\rm SL}_2(2^n)$. Due to the nature of our work we also have to discuss a few methodological issues of the black box group theory. 347. Generation of finite classical groups by pairs of elements with large fixed point spaces

Abstract

We study `good elements' in finite $2n$-dimensional classical groups $G$: namely $t$ is a `good element' if $o(t)$ is divisible by a primitive prime divisor of $q^n-1$ for the relevant field order $q$, and $t$ fixes pointwise an $n$-space. The group ${\rm{SL}}_{2n}(q)$ contains such elements, and they are present in ${\rm{Su}}_{2n}(q), {\rm{Sp}}_{2n}(q), {\rm{So}}^\epsilon_{2n}(q)$, only if $n$ is odd, even, even, respectively. We prove that there is an absolute positive constant $c$ such that two random conjugates of $t$ generate $G$ with probability at least $c$, if $G\ne {\rm{Sp}}_{2n}(q)$ with $q$ even. In the exceptional case $G={\rm{Sp}}_{2n}(q)$ with $q$ even, two conjugates of $t$ never generate $G$: in this case we prove that two random conjugates of $t$ generate a subgroup ${\rm{SO}}^\epsilon_{2n}(q)$ with probability at least $c$. The results (proved for all field orders at least $4$) underpin analysis of new constructive recognition algorithms for classical groups in even characteristic, which succeed where methods utilising involution centralisers are not available.

Abstract

Cardiovascular disease is anticipated to remain the leading cause of death globally. Due to the current problems connected with using autologous arteries for bypass surgery, researchers are developing tissue-engineered vascular grafts (TEVGs). The major goal of vascular tissue engineering is to construct prostheses that closely resemble native blood vessels in terms of morphological, mechanical, and biological features so that these scaffolds can satisfy the functional requirements of the native tissue. In this setting, morphology and cellular investigation are usually prioritized, while mechanical qualities are generally addressed superficially. However, producing grafts with good mechanical properties similar to native vessels is crucial for enhancing the clinical performance of vascular grafts, exposing physiological forces, and preventing graft failure caused by intimal hyperplasia, thrombosis, aneurysm, blood leakage, and occlusion. The scaffold’s design and composition play a significant role in determining its mechanical characteristics, including suturability, compliance, tensile strength, burst pressure, and blood permeability. Electrospun prostheses offer various models that can be customized to resemble the extracellular matrix. This review aims to provide a comprehensive and comparative review of recent studies on the mechanical properties of fibrous vascular grafts, emphasizing the influence of structural parameters on mechanical behavior. Additionally, this review provides an overview of permeability and cell growth in electrospun membranes for vascular grafts. This work intends to shed light on the design parameters required to maintain the mechanical stability of vascular grafts placed in the body to produce a temporary backbone and to be biodegraded when necessary, allowing an autologous vessel to take its place.
