321. Cinema in the 'local perfect position': children and education in the documentary work of Xhanfise Keko.

Abstract

Xhanfise Keko, the sole woman director of communist Albania, has recently been discovered by the international academic and critical community, and her films are, for the first time, reaching global audiences. To date, such recognition has focused on her fiction films made between 1972 and 1985, which were most noted for the director's subtle work with child actors. Often deemed a director of children's films, Keko managed to work safely within the system, yet transcend its confines. Situating her non-fiction work within the historical context of the Albanian documentary, this article will explore her career as a documentarian and director of newsreels from the time of her studies in Moscow in the early 1950s through 1971, prior to her emergence as a director of fiction films. Its approach to her work will be mediated in part by a 2017 documentary by Mevlan Shanaj, Koha e pelikulës: Xhanfise Keko/Xhanfise Keko: A Woman Director in the Time of Celluloid, a work that reveals the importance of Keko, not only for contemporary Albania, but also for today's international audiences. Keko's documentaries comprise vivid depictions of what was arguably the most closed society of the 20th century. Although highly conventional in structure and thematics, they are clear forerunners of the innovative ways in which she fought for authenticity in her fiction films. Universities are particularly liable to suffer in periods of cost inflation. An index is derived to show that between 1965 and 1974 university costs increased more rapidly than other prices. 324. Reinforcement and the Overjustification Effect.

Abstract

Reward contingencies and other extrinsic constraints on behavior can lead to reduced levels of interest in and/or decreased engagement in a target activity in a subsequent noncontingent situation. It has been hypothesized that this effect is caused by a change in the self-perceived locus of motivation from intrinsic to extrinsic. It follows from this that effective rewards are more likely to produce the overjustification effect than are ineffective rewards. However, a review of empirical studies suggests the opposite conclusion. This experiment manipulates four levels of the behavior constraint-reinforcement variable: attractive reward, unattractive reward, request to perform, and a no-reward, no-request control. Only the unattractive reward and request groups indicated performance decrements which suggest the overjustification effect. The attractive reward group was significantly different from these two groups on this measure. Results indicate that reinforcement does not cause the overjustification effect. The behavior constraining aspect of a contingency seems to produce the effect, while the reinforcement, or reward value, aspect leads to an increase in interest and post-contingency performance. 325. Behavioral Treatment of Severe Self-Injury: The Importance of Staff Selection in an Institutional Environment.

Abstract

Overtime pay was used to encourage staff personnel of a state institution to carry out an intensive around-the-clock program to reduce the self injurious behaviors of a severely retarded and deaf adult. Contingent use of restraints, in conjunction with an intensive program of differential reinforcement of other behavior and differential reinforcement of incompatible behavior, was effective in treating the self injurious behavior. Restraints were applied following face picking after gestures, brief manual restraint and showing the restraints failed to prevent repeated picking. The S participated in half-hour instructional sessions on tasks incompatible with face picking, such as ball play, puzzles, and sign language. Self injurious behavior was significantly reduced and generalization was gradually accomplished. The value of such an intensive, round-the-clock program is discussed. (CL)

326. Enriching the Physical Environment: Effects on Test Performance and Maladaptive Behavior.

Abstract

The effects on maladaptive behavior and test performance of stark versus enriched physical environments were examined with 16 severely and moderately retarded adults in a large residential institution. The relevant literature was reviewed and classified in four categories: cognitive development studies; studies of the effects of manipulated environmental variables on maladaptive behavior of the retarded; studies of environmental determinants of behavior in naturalistic settings; and studies of environmental variables affecting test performance. The eight male and eight female Ss were given a 20-minute standardized test in both a sparsely furnished room and an enriched, pleasantly furnished room while an observer recorded behaviors. Results suggested that physical decoration of institutional living areas, although welcome as a normalizing influence, may not be effective in significantly decreasing maladaptive behavior or increasing test performance. It was also found that Ss in the enriched setting appeared to engage in less self-stimulatory behavior. (JW)
