Abstract

Affected by climate and natural conditions, cruise activities have obvious seasonal characteristics. For a cruise ship, seasonality consists of the systematic, although not necessarily regular, movement of a cruise ship in a selected time. To examine more specifically the natural factors of the seasonal characteristics from a microscopic perspective, we construct month-temperature, quarter-season, and year-climate zone, a seasonal analysis framework in two dimensions of space and time and using a single world cruise ship named Queen Elizabeth (QE) as the case. Comparing the characteristics of the trajectory network with the seasonal factors, we find the cruise ship tend to voyage in a stable temperature range of 10°C–20°C, flee the winter and catch up with the summer and spring, and mainly stay in the temperature maritime climate zone, the subtropical monsoon humid climate zone, and the Mediterranean climate zone to form several branch network. Finally, the academic and practical implications of the research findings for seasonal management and itinerary choice are elaborated from the supply-side and demand-side. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

126. External Standard Calibration Method To Measure the Hydroxyl Radical Scavenging Capacity of Water Samples

Abstract

The hydroxyl radical (•OH) scavenging capacity is a useful parameter for the design and operation of an advanced oxidation process (AOP) in water treatment. The scavenging capacity may change with time, and it would be useful to continuously measure this change to be able to optimize AOP doses. In this study, we first reviewed current methods for scavenging capacity measurement to identify strengths and weaknesses of each method. This information helped guide the design of an external calibration method to allow straightforward laboratory and field measurement of •OH scavenging capacity. The method used low-pressure UV/H2O2as the •OH generation system, methylene blue (MB) as the probe compound, and isopropyl alcohol (IPA) as the standard. By monitoring, offline, the color decay of MB in a series of IPA solutions with different scavenging capacity, a calibration curve was established between the color decay rate and the scavenging capacity. The measured color decay in real water samples can then be used with this external calibration to estimate their scavenging capacity. Work was undertaken to ensure that the process would be robust under a wide range of water quality conditions. Parallel tests using this method compared with the benchmark methods confirmed its robustness and accuracy.

International audience; Spatial models of port system evolution often depict linearly the emergence of hierarchy through successive concentration phases of originally scattered ports. The Chinese case provides a fertile ground for complementing existing works by a long-term perspective, given the early importance of river ports and seaports and the development irregularities caused by periods of closure and openness over time and across such a large land mass. In both qualitative and quantitative ways, this paper describes and analyses the changing spatial pattern of China's port system since the first unified empire (221bc). Main results underline a certain stability of the port system with regard to the location of main sea-river gateways, notwithstanding important regional shifts from one period to the other.

Abstract

Based on the review of research progress, we integrate the theoretical model of container port system proposed by Hayuth and Notterboom, in light of the newest characters and developing mechanism of port system in the world, and design an revised theoretical model of container port system which is divided into five spatial-temporal developing stages, including pre-containerization, introduction and experiment of technology, popularization of technology and centre of throughput, hub port, diffusion and offshore hub, regionalization of port. We describe the spatial characteristics of container port system in each developing stage in detail. Its last two developing stages are diffusion and offshore hub and regionalization result from the integrated effect of five aspects, including local restriction of hub port, change of container shipping network, integration of modern logistics resources, inland distribution network and inland terminal, macro-control of the Central Government and market mechanism of port construction. Then, we choose the Yangtze River Delta as a case study, and analyze the evolving process of container port system, especially its changes of spatial characteristics and developing mechanism, to validate the theoretical model of container port system.

Abstract

Pilot-scale and lab-scale experiments were performed to evaluate the ability of granular activated carbon (GAC) to quench hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The GAC was harvested from 5 drinking water treatment plants and included two GACs that were specifically designed for this purpose (“catalytic”), and 3 that were used solely to adsorb taste and odour compounds (“normal”). All GACs indicated very little change in performance with time for GAC up to 9 years old (the oldest tested). Batch kinetic tests revealed that the catalytic GACs had a higher reaction rate with H2O2than the normal GACs, but under typical conditions (e.g.4+ minute EBCT) the difference may not be important in practice. The observed first order decomposition rate of H2O2increased linearly with the spherical surface area of the GAC particles, providing evidence that effectiveness is governed by particle size, implying that smaller GAC would be more effective for quenching H2O2.
