Microbes are important for mosquito nutrition, growth, reproduction and control. In this study, we examined bacterial communities associated with larval mosquitoes and their habitats. Specifically, we characterized bacterial communities associated with late larval instars of the western encephalitis mosquito (Culex tarsalis), the submerged portions of two emergent macrophytes (California bulrush, Schoenoplectus californicus and alkali bulrush, Schoenoplectus maritimus), and the associated water columns to investigate potential differential use of resources by mosquitoes in different wetland habitats. Using next-generation sequence data from 16S rRNA gene hypervariable regions, the alpha diversity of mosquito gut microbial communities did not differ between pond mesocosms containing distinct monotypic plants. Proteobacteria, dominated by the genus Thorsellia (Enterobacteriaceae), was the most abundant phylum recovered from C. tarsalis larvae. Approximately 49% of bacterial OTUs found in larval mosquitoes were identical to OTUs recovered from the water column and submerged portions of the two bulrushes. Plant and water samples were similar to one another, both being dominated by Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Cyanobacteria, Proteobacteria and Verrucomicrobia phyla. Overall, the bacterial communities within C. tarsalis larvae were conserved and did not change across sampling dates and between two distinct plant habitats. Although Thorsellia spp. dominated mosquito gut communities, overlap of mosquito gut, plant and water-column OTUs likely reveal the effects of larval feeding. Future research will investigate the role of the key indicator groups of bacteria across the different developmental stages of this mosquito species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Commercially available formulations of two entomopathogenic fungi, Beauveria bassiana (Bals.-Criv.) Vuill. (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae) and Metarhizium anisopliae (Metchnikoff) Sorokin (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae), were assessed for control of Culex quinquefasciatus Say (Diptera: Culicidae) in underground storm drain systems (USDS) in the Coachella Valley of southern California. Each of three treatments, the two fungi or a water control, was applied to 1 m2 of vertical wall at eight USDS sites in spring and autumn of 2015. Fungal infectivity and lethality were assessed at 1 d and 1, 2, and 4 wk post-application. Overnight bioassays using adult lab-reared female mosquitoes were carried out on the treated USDS wall areas and then mosquitoes were held in the laboratory for up to 21 d to allow fungal infections to be expressed. Postmortem fungal sporulation was assessed up to 2 wk at 100% humidity. Mosquito-fungal interactions also were assessed in bioassays of the three treatments on filter paper exposed to USDS conditions during autumn. Metarhizium anisopliae killed mosquitoes faster than B. bassiana; nevertheless, both freshly applied formulations caused greater than 80% mortality. Fungal persistence declined significantly after 1 wk under USDS conditions, but some infectivity persisted for more than 4 wk. Beauveria bassiana was more effective against Cx. qinquefasciatus in the spring, while M. anisopliae was more effective in the cooler conditions during autumn. USDS environmental conditions (e.g., temperature, relative humidity, standing water) influenced fungal-related mortality and infection of Cx. quinquefasciatus. The utility of these fungal formulations for mosquito abatement in the Coachella Valley and implications for fungal control agents in USDS environments are discussed.

Larvae of Uranotaenia anhydor Dyar were collected from decaying vegetation within a constructed treatment wetland in western Riverside County, CA. This find extends the range of this species into the inland valleys south of the San Bernardino Mountains of southern California.

The diving behavior, aggregation, horizontal distribution under two food regimes, and response to change in ambient light level were studied for fourth instars of four Culex species in the laboratory. Under low food conditions, Cx. erythrothorax larvae dived less frequently, exhibited greater aggregation, and had stronger preferences for the corners of the observation chamber than did larvae of three congeners (Cx. tarsalis, Cx. quinquefasciatus, and Cx. stigmatosoma). Under high food conditions, larvae of all species were more sedentary than under low food conditions; however, the behavior of Cx. erythrothorax larvae changed comparatively little with changes in food abundance. Culex erythrothorax was the most responsive to disturbance (an 11% change in ambient light level), whereas Cx. tarsalis larvae did not respond to small changes in ambient light level. The behavior of Cx. erythrothorax larvae differed significantly from the three congeners studied. Species-specific behavioral differences of larvae may have contributed to the discrepancies of species relative abundance in larval surveys versus emerging adult mosquito collections at constructed wetlands noted in previous studies.

Vegetation management for constructed treatment wetlands often involves knocking down emergent vegetation with heavy equipment and inundating the dead vegetation after a period of drying. Such practices create favorable conditions for larval mosquitoes. We studied the relationship between length of the drying period for an emergent macrophyte, Typha sp., and the abundance of aquatic invertebrates in replicated 0.18-m3 wading pools. The mosquito, Culex tarsalis, was significantly more abundant in pools containing vegetation aged for 2 wk before inundation compared to pools containing vegetation aged 5 wk, freshly cut vegetation, or without vegetation. Potential larval mosquito food resources (particles between 2 and 61 microm in equivalent spherical diameter) in the 2-wk aging treatment did not differ significantly from the other treatments during the 5-wk experiment. The abundance of other larval culicids, nonculicine Diptera, and potential mosquito predators (i.e., Dytiscidae and Aeshnidae) did not differ significantly among the vegetation aging treatments.
