Abstract

The measured ion-optical properties of the Karlsruhe magnetic spectrograph “Little John” and the properties of its detector system are described. Moreover, the procedures for an efficient use of the spectrograph, in particular concerning small angle and zero degree experiments, are presented in detail. Characteristic experimental results from 6 Li-induced nuclear reactions demonstrate the performance of the whole setup.

Abstract

The in-plane α1−γ angular correlation of the reaction 24Mg(α, αγ) has been studied at a bombarding energy of 104 MeV. Double differential cross sections have been measured for 126 pairs of angles by use of a multidetector arrangement consisting of four Si(Li) particle detectors and two Ge(Li) γ-detectors. The correlation data are described very well by coupled channel calculations on the basis of a symmetric rotator model. A strong sensitivity to the sign of the quadrupole deformation has been found. This sensitivity proves to be nearly independent of the potential parameters. The main features of the observed prolate-oblate effects can be understood in the framework of a simple diffraction model.

Abstract

In a study of hyperon production with antiprotons at the CERN Low-Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR), we have measured the ratio A=(α + α )/(α− α ) . Here α and α are the decay asymmetry parameters of the Λ and Λ non-leptonic charged decays. The hyperons were produced with identical polarization in the reaction p p→ Λ Λ at an incident p momentum of 1.546 GeV/c. The result, A=− 0.07 ± 0.09, is consistent with zero, as required from CP invariance.

Abstract

The circular polarization of internal bremsstrahlung of 90 Y was measured as a function of photon energy. High accuracy could be achieved by use of a Ge(Li) detector for the detection of the γ-quanta Compton-scattered on magnetized iron. The experimental results demonstrate that detour transitions as they are taken into account in the calculations of Ford and Martin contribute to the internal bremsstrahlung of 90 Y.

Abstract

Results are presented from a study of the reaction p p→ Λ Λ near threshold. Over 3000 events recorded at s values 14.6 and 25.5 MeV above the Λ Λ threshold (2231.2 MeV) have been analysed. Results for the production cross section, differential cross section, and the Λ and Λ polarization are given at both energies and are compared with recent theoretical calculations of this process.

Abstract

The longitudinal polarisation transfer from muons to lambda and anti-lambda hyperons, D_LL, has been studied in deep inelastic scattering off an unpolarised isoscalar target at the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The spin transfers to lambda and anti-lambda produced in the current fragmentation region exhibit different behaviours as a function of x and xF . The measured x and xF dependences of D^lambda_LL are compatible with zero, while D^anti-lambda_LL tends to increase with xF, reaching values of 0.4 - 0.5. The resulting average values are D^lambda_LL = -0.012 +- 0.047 +- 0.024 and D^anti-lambda_LL = 0.249 +- 0.056 +- 0.049. These results are discussed in the frame of recent model calculations.

Abstract

Triggered by a recent paper by Thomas, Hicks and Hosaka, we investigate which observables can be used to determine the parity of the Theta(+) from the reaction (p) over right arrow(p) over right arrow --> Sigma(+)Theta(+) near its production threshold. In particular, we show that the sign of the spin correlation coefficient A(xx) for small excess energies yields the negative of the parity of the Theta(+). The argument relies solely on the Pauli principle and parity conservation and is therefore model-independent. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

We report on a determination of the analyzing power A y in the p → p → p p ω reaction studied with the TOF spectrometer located at the COSY-accelerator (Forschungszentrum Julich, Germany). This spectrometer is very well suited for polarization measurements due to its rotational symmetry and full coverage of the azimuthal angle. For a beam momentum of p = 3065 MeV / c corresponding to an excess energy of ϵ = 129 MeV A y is found to be compatible with zero.

Abstract

A miniature drift chamber (MDC) with an active area of 25 × 16 mm and a thickness of 6 mm has been constructed, using a simple design and low cost materials. The MDC works without additional field wires or electrodes. It is operated with isobutane at low pressure (140 mbar). The spatial resolution is ≲ 300 μ m. The MDC has been used as a spatial sensitive transmission detector, together with a Δ E/E solid state detector telescope, to study the angular distribution of the reaction 90 Zr(Li, Li′). Thereby a region of ca. 4.5° could be measured simultaneously, allowing an angular resolution better than 0.2°.

Abstract

The giant resonance region of $^{12}\mathrm{C}$ has been investigated by small angle scattering of 104 MeV $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ particles. No evidence was found for concentrated monopole strength. Monopole strength around ${E}_{x}=9.15$ MeV ($\ensuremath{\Gamma}=1.8$ MeV, 2.1% energy-weighted sum rule) recently observed in a $^{3}\mathrm{He}$ scattering experiment could not be confirmed.NUCLEAR REACTIONS $^{12}\mathrm{C}$($\ensuremath{\alpha}$,${\ensuremath{\alpha}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$); ${E}_{\ensuremath{\alpha}}=104$ MeV. Measured ${E}_{x}$,$\ensuremath{\sigma}(\ensuremath{\theta})$ for giant resonance region.

Abstract

In particle-γ angular correlations interference terms appear which are composed of the reaction amplitudes, referring to the different magnetic substates of the residual excited state. (Similar interference terms, though referring to different projectile substates, contribute to the analysing power in reactions with polarized beams.) Therefore correlation experiments as well as experiments with polarized projectiles provide more insight into the reaction mechanism than differential cross section measurements.

Abstract

Polarization phenomena studied either by polarized projectiles and/or by particle-γ-angular correlation experiments provide more information about the reaction mechanism than the analysis of the differential cross section alone. To analyse cross section data often DWBA or CCBA calculations are used. While in the DWBA approach only the direct coupling of the final state to the target ground state is considered, the CCBA calculations include multistep processes too. It is the purpose of this note to show that the comparison of such calculations with particle-γ-correlation data provides a semiquantitative measure of the importance of multistep processes.

Abstract

The exclusive reaction pp →‐ΛΛ is an interesting laboratory in which to study both spin physics and fundamental symmetries. The PS185 collaboration at LEAR has been exploiting this fact for the last few years in an ongoing program of hyperon‐antihyperon production. The motivation for this study will be outlined and the experimental technique will be described. Spin physics aspects such as the measurements of the outgoing hyperon polarization and preliminary determinations of spin correlation coefficients will be presented. Fundamental symmetry checks such as lifetime differences between Λ and Λ (CPT) and decay properties (CP) will be discussed. A future experiment which is quite sensitive to CP violation in a hyperon‐antihyperon system will be mentioned.

Abstract

Various thresholds for the production of stable particles can be reached with beams from LEAR (Table 1). At thresholds the new particles appear in the centre of mass (cm.) system with vanishing relative energy. For a long time they stay close to each other, so that there will be strong final-state interaction (f.s.i.). If this f.s.i. can be sorted out then we can get information about low-energy interactions of many interesting particle combinations which are not available so far1. A systematic comparison could be valuable for a better understanding of low-energy quark dynamics.

Abstract

Precision measurements of hyperon-antihyperon production with antiprotons permit detailed tests of strange quark pair production and decay. Recent measurements at LEAR of lambda-antilambda production are compared with selected calculations. A recent search in the K/sub s/K/sub s/ channel for xi(2230) formation and possible future searches for CP nonconservation in the lambda-antilambda system are also discussed. 17 refs., 13 figs.

Abstract

Since the revelation of the narrow resonance at 2220 MeV in the KK final states of the radiative decay J/Ψ→δχ at SLAC, much theoretical and experimental effort has been devoted to the understanding of this unusual object. Theoretical explanations range from the conventional to the exotic. The experimental evidence, however, rests solely on one experiment and is not of sufficient quality to distinguish among the intriguing possibilities. We describe an experiment which would be ideal to measure precisely the properties of the ξ, including its mass, width, and angular momentum.

Abstract

Results are presented for a measurement for the production of the antihydrogen atom H0 ≡ pe+, the simplest atomic bound state of antimatter. A method has been used by the PS210 collaboration at LEAR which assumes that the production of H0 is predominantly mediated by the e+e−-pair creation via the two-photon mechanism in the antiproton-nucleus interaction. Neutral H0 atoms are identified by a unique sequence of characteristics. In principle H0 is well suited for investigations of fundamental CPT violation studies under different forces, however, in our investigations we concentrate on the production of this antimatter object, since so far it has never been observed before. The production of 11 antihydrogen atoms is reported including possibly 2±1 background signals, the observed yield agrees with theoretical predictions.

Abstract

To study fundamental questions of hadron and nuclear physics in interactions of antiprotons with nucleons and nuclei, the universal PANDA detector will be built. Gluonic excitations, the physics of strange and charm quarks and nucleon structure studies will be performed with unprecedented accuracy thereby allowing high-precision tests of the strong interaction. The proposed PANDA detector is a state-of-the art internal target detector at the HESR at FAIR allowing the detection and identification of neutral and charged particles generated within the relevant angular and energy range. This report presents a summary of the physics accessible at PANDA and what performance can be expected.

Abstract

The electrochemical induced cold fusion of deuterium in palladium has been reinvestigated by means of neutron spectroscopy. Within the experimental limits of 20 n/s set by the fast neutron spectrometer and 50 n/s given by the γ-spectroscopy, respectively, no indications of cold fusion could be observed.

Abstract

Narrow Xi-pi+- and Xi-bar+pi+- resonances produced by quasi-real photons have been searched for by the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The study was stimulated by the recent observation of an exotic baryonic state decaying into Xi-pi-, at a mass of 1862 MeV, interpreted as a pentaquark. While the ordinary hyperon states Xi(1530)^0 and Xi-bar(1530)^0 are clearly seen, no exotic baryon is observed in the data taken in 2002 and 2003., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Multiplicities of charged hadrons produced in deep inelastic muon scattering off a $^6$LiD target have been measured as a function of the DIS variables $x_{Bj}$, $Q^2$, $W^2$ and the final state hadron variables $p_T$ and $z$. The $p_T^2$ distributions are fitted with a single exponential function at low values of $p_T^2$ to determine the dependence of $\langle p_T^2 \rangle$ on $x_{Bj}$, $Q^2$, $W^2$ and $z$. The $z$-dependence of $\langle p_T^2 \rangle$ is shown to be a potential tool to extract the average intrinsic transverse momentum squared of partons, $\langle k_{\perp}^2 \rangle$, as a function of $x_{Bj}$ and $Q^2$ in a leading order QCD parton model., 18 pages, 13 figures and 3 tables

Abstract

The COMPASS Collaboration at CERN has investigated the π- γ → π- π- π+ reaction at center-of-momentum energy below five pion masses, sqrt[s]5m(π), embedded in the Primakoff reaction of 190 GeV pions impinging on a lead target. Exchange of quasireal photons is selected by isolating the sharp Coulomb peak observed at smallest momentum transfers, t'0.001 GeV2/c2. Using partial-wave analysis techniques, the scattering intensity of Coulomb production described in terms of chiral dynamics and its dependence on the 3π-invariant mass m(3π)=sqrt[s] were extracted. The absolute cross section was determined in seven bins of sqrt[s] with an overall precision of 20%. At leading order, the result is found to be in good agreement with the prediction of chiral perturbation theory over the whole energy range investigated.

Abstract

The longitudinal polarisation transfer from muons to lambda and anti-lambda hyperons, D_LL, has been studied in deep inelastic scattering off an unpolarised isoscalar target at the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The spin transfers to lambda and anti-lambda produced in the current fragmentation region exhibit different behaviours as a function of x and xF . The measured x and xF dependences of D^lambda_LL are compatible with zero, while D^anti-lambda_LL tends to increase with xF, reaching values of 0.4 - 0.5. The resulting average values are D^lambda_LL = -0.012 +- 0.047 +- 0.024 and D^anti-lambda_LL = 0.249 +- 0.056 +- 0.049. Abstract

The longitudinal double spin asymmetry A_1^rho for exclusive leptoproduction of rho^0 mesons, mu + N -> mu + N + rho, is studied using the COMPASS 2002 and 2003 data. The measured reaction is incoherent exclusive rho^0 production on polarised deuterons. The Q^2 and x dependence of A_1^rho is presented in a wide kinematical range: 3x10^-3 < Q^2 < 7 (GeV/c)^2 and 5x10^-5 < x < 0.05. The presented results are the first measurements of A_1^rho at small Q2 (Q2 < 0.1 (GeV/c)^2) and small x (x < 3x10^-3). Abstract

The central region of COMPASS RICH-1 has been equipped with a new photon detection system based on MultiAnode PhotoMultiplier Tubes (MAPMT). The Cherenkov photons are focused by an array of 576 fused silica telescopes onto 576 MAPMTs. The quality and positioning of all optical components have been tested by Hartmann method. The validation procedures are described. The quality of the optical concentrators was checked and alignment corrections were made. The upgraded detector showed excellent performances during 2006 data taking.

Abstract

The new photon detection system for COMPASS RICH-1 has been designed to cope with the demanding requests of operation at high beam intensity and at high trigger rates. The detection technique in the central region of RICH-1 has been changed with a system based on multianode photomultipliers coupled to individual fused silica lens telescopes and to a fast, almost dead time free readout system based on the MAD-4 amplifier-discriminator and the F1 TDC-chip. The new photon detection system design and construction are described, as well as its first response in the experiment.

Abstract

Exclusive measurements of the quasifree pp→ppπ^{+}π^{-} reaction have been carried out at WASA@COSY by means of pd collisions at T&#95;{p}=1.2  GeV. Total and differential cross sections have been extracted covering the energy region T&#95;{p}=1.08-1.36  GeV, which is the region of N^{*}(1440) and Δ(1232)Δ(1232) resonance excitations. Calculations describing these excitations by t-channel meson exchange are at variance with the measured differential cross sections and underpredict substantially the experimental total cross section. An isotensor ΔN dibaryon resonance with I(J^{P})=2(1^{+}) produced associatedly with a pion is able to overcome these deficiencies.

Abstract

Taking advantage of the high acceptance and axial symmetry of the WASA-at-COSY detector, and the high polarization degree of the proton beam of COSY, the reaction p[over →]p→ppη has been measured close to threshold to explore the analyzing power A&#95;{y}. The angular distribution of A&#95;{y} is determined with the precision improved by more than 1 order of magnitude with respect to previous results, allowing a first accurate comparison with theoretical predictions. The determined analyzing power is consistent with zero for an excess energy of Q=15  MeV, signaling s-wave production with no evidence for higher partial waves. At Q=72  MeV the data reveal strong interference of Ps and Pp partial waves and cancellation of (Pp)^{2} and Ss^{*}Sd contributions. These results rule out the presently available theoretical predictions for the production mechanism of the η meson.

Abstract

The COMPASS Collaboration at CERN has measured diffractive dissociation of 190  GeV/c pions into the π(-)π(-)π(+) final state using a stationary hydrogen target. A partial-wave analysis (PWA) was performed in bins of 3π mass and four-momentum transfer using the isobar model and the so far largest PWA model consisting of 88 waves. A narrow peak is observed in the f0(980)π channel with spin, parity and C-parity quantum numbers J(PC)=1(++). We present a resonance-model study of a subset of the spin-density matrix selecting 3π states with J(PC)=2(++) and 4(++) decaying into ρ(770)π and with J(PC)=1(++) decaying into f0(980)π. We identify a new a1 meson with mass (1414(-13)(+15))  MeV/c2 and width (153(-23)(+8))  MeV/c2. Within the final states investigated in our analysis, we observe the new a1(1420) decaying only into f0(980)π, suggesting its exotic nature.

Abstract

The COMPASS collaboration at CERN has investigated pion Compton scattering, π(-)γ→π(-)γ, at center-of-mass energy below 3.5 pion masses. The process is embedded in the reaction π(-)Ni→π(-)γNi, which is initiated by 190 GeV pions impinging on a nickel target. The exchange of quasireal photons is selected by isolating the sharp Coulomb peak observed at smallest momentum transfers, Q(2)<0.0015  (GeV/c)(2). From a sample of 63,000 events, the pion electric polarizability is determined to be α(π)=(2.0±0.6(stat)±0.7(syst))×10(-4)  fm(3) under the assumption α(π)=-β(π), which relates the electric and magnetic dipole polarizabilities. It is the most precise measurement of this fundamental low-energy parameter of strong interaction that has been addressed since long by various methods with conflicting outcomes. While this result is in tension with previous dedicated measurements, it is found in agreement with the expectation from chiral perturbation theory. An additional measurement replacing pions by muons, for which the cross-section behavior is unambiguously known, was performed for an independent estimate of the systematic uncertainty.

Abstract

The COMPASS Collaboration at CERN has investigated the π- γ → π- π- π+ reaction at center-of-momentum energy below five pion masses, sqrt[s]<5m(π), embedded in the Primakoff reaction of 190 GeV pions impinging on a lead target. Exchange of quasireal photons is selected by isolating the sharp Coulomb peak observed at smallest momentum transfers, t'<0.001  GeV2/c2. Using partial-wave analysis techniques, the scattering intensity of Coulomb production described in terms of chiral dynamics and its dependence on the 3π-invariant mass m(3π)=sqrt[s] were extracted. The absolute cross section was determined in seven bins of sqrt[s] with an overall precision of 20%. At leading order, the result is found to be in good agreement with the prediction of chiral perturbation theory over the whole energy range investigated.

Abstract

We report on an exclusive and kinematically complete high-statistics measurement of the basic double-pionic fusion reaction pn→dπ(0)π(0) over the full energy region of the ABC effect, a pronounced low-mass enhancement in the ππ-invariant mass spectrum. The measurements, which cover also the transition region to the conventional t-channel ΔΔ process, were performed with the upgraded WASA detector setup at COSY. The data reveal the Abashian-Booth-Crowe effect to be uniquely correlated with a Lorentzian energy dependence in the integral cross section. The observables are consistent with a narrow resonance with m=2.37  GeV, Γ≈70  MeV and I(J(P))=0(3(+)) in both pn and ΔΔ systems. Necessary further tests of the resonance interpretation are discussed.

Abstract

The COMPASS experiment at the CERN SPS has studied the diffractive dissociation of negative pions into the π- π- π+ final state using a 190  GeV/c pion beam hitting a lead target. A partial wave analysis has been performed on a sample of 420,000 events taken at values of the squared 4-momentum transfer t' between 0.1 and 1  GeV2/c2. The well-known resonances a1(1260), a2(1320), and π2(1670) are clearly observed. In addition, the data show a significant natural-parity exchange production of a resonance with spin-exotic quantum numbers J(PC)=1-+ at 1.66  GeV/c2 decaying to ρπ. The resonant nature of this wave is evident from the mass-dependent phase differences to the J(PC)=2-+ and 1++ waves. From a mass-dependent fit a resonance mass of (1660±10(-64)(+0))  MeV/c2 and a width of (269±21(-64)(+42))  MeV/c2 are deduced, with an intensity of (1.7±0.2)% of the total intensity.

Abstract

First measurements of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries of charged hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering of muons on a transversely polarized 6LiD target are presented. The data were taken in 2002 with the COMPASS spectrometer using the muon beam of the CERN SPS at 160 GeV/c. The Collins asymmetry turns out to be compatible with zero, as does the measured Sivers asymmetry within the present statistical errors.

Abstract

Background and Purpose: The reaction of human tumor cells and mammalian normal tissue to irradiation with low energy protons and X-rays was examined., Material and Methods: An irradiation facility with a vertical proton beam was set up at the Tandem accelerator at the University of Erlangen. U-138MG human glioblastoma cells and B14 hamster fibroblasts were irradiated with 5.7 and 7.0 MeV protons (LET 7.27 and 6.23 keV/microm) and with 120 kV X-rays. The inactivation was measured by the colony forming assay, induction and repair of DNA double strand breaks (DSB) by constant field gel electrophoresis and cell cycle control by image cytometry., Results: An obvious reduction of the shoulder of the dose effect curve was determined. This effect was more pronounced for the glioblastoma cell line. The RBE at 10% survival was measured as 1.78 +/- 0.09 for glioblastoma cells and 1.18 +/- 0.06 for B14 fibroblasts. The induction of DNA DSB in glioblastoma cells showed an RBE of 0.96 +/- 0.06, after 24h repair time an RBE of 2.63 +/- 0.07 was calculated. Protons had a larger and enduring effect on G2 arrest of cell cycle than X-rays, 72 hours after irradiation with 10 Gy an RBE of 1.57 +/- 0.05 was calculated., Conclusions: The effect of higher LET irradiation was more distinct for tumor cells than for normal tissue. Both cell lines showed a higher RBE for cell survival than the value of 1.1 normally used for proton therapy. Repair capacity of DNA DSB was reduced following low energy proton irradiation and G2 arrest was induced to a larger degree. Further experiments are needed to elucidate if this could be a reason for lower cell survival.
