Purpose: To examine the effect of Transcultural Nursing education on nursing students' Professional Values, Empathic Skills, Cultural Sensitivity and Intelligence. Design: A posttest quasi-experimental study with a control group. Methods: The participants were second year nursing students (n = 125). The experiment group was composed of students who had enrolled in the Transcultural Nursing course (n = 65). The control group consisted of students who did not enroll in this course (n = 60). Findings: The posttest scores of the experiment group in the scales were significantly higher than those in the control group (p <.01). Conclusion: Transcultural nursing course is an effective method to increase the professional values, empathic skills, cultural sensitivity and intelligence of students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The word Two-Spirit is an umbrella term that is used to describe Indigenous peoples who are diverse in terms of their sexual orientation and gender identity, though community-specific definitions and roles for gender and sexual orientation are more extensive and varied. While the terminology of Two-Spirit is recent in its development, Indigenous conceptualizations of diverse gender identities, roles, and sexual orientations have existed since time immemorial and provide important insights into how cultural safety can be incorporated into caring practices. The purpose of this article is to introduce readers to the term Two-Spirit and to provide a broad overview of Indigenous conceptualizations of gender, sexuality, and spirit, to address implications for the nursing profession, and to outline potential applications of this knowledge in practice. PURPOSE: The study aimed to determine how culture can affect mental healthcare delivery in order to make recommendations for improving care pathways supported by culturally competent care. METHODS: Three international databases were systematically and independently searched by two researchers. FİNDİNGS: The results were grouped under three themes—quality of cross‐cultural mental health care, expectations of people receiving cross‐cultural mental health care, and perspectives of healthcare providers on cross‐cultural mental health care. CONCLUSİONS: The study indicates how important it is for nurses to understand the complex interplay between culture and mental health and to develop cultural awareness and sensitivity. The purpose of this article is to discuss the need to provide culturally sensitive care to the growing number of diverse health care consumers. A literature review of national standards and research on cultural competency was conducted and specifically focused on the field of nursing. This study supports the theory that cultural competence is learned over time and is a process of inner reflection and awareness. The domains of awareness, skill, and knowledge are essential competencies that must be gained by health care providers and especially for nurses. Although barriers to providing culturally sensitive care exist, gaining a better understanding of cultural competence is essential to developing realistic education and training techniques, which will lead to quality professional nursing practice for increasingly diverse populations. Introduction: Leprosy is an infectious disease that causes various problems, not only in medical terms but also extends to social, economic, cultural, security and social security issues. Efforts made to break the chain of transmission of leprosy cases focus more on individuals who have not focused on families that have a high transmission chain. Purpose: The research aims to explore the social factors of social and cultural factors in influencing family independence in preventing transmission of leprosy, describing the independence of the family in preventing transmission of leprosy, then compiled an example of a culture-based family independence program model for the prevention of leprosy transmission in Sampang with a theoretical approach used namely Family Centered Nursing and the theory of Transcultural Nursing in the form of modules. Method: This study uses a qualitative research approach. Data saturation until five participants were obtained who carried out data retrieval in an in-depth interview. Data analysis using the Collaizi analysis method. Results: Identification found four main themes: ((1) Religious; (2) Social Factors; (3) Economic Factors; and (4) Cultural Value. Conclusions: The description of the independence of families who care for lepers is still influenced by many factors, especially tradition and culture, efforts to break the chain of transmission are also closely related to care efforts that still do not reflect preventive values. This study is part of a larger research project designed to examine the view of home nursing care from the perspective of older South Sami people in Sweden. In the present study, we present findings from the point of view of their expectations of home nursing care. The Sami are an indigenous population living in northern Sweden, Norway, Finland and the Kola Peninsula, and consist of different Sami people, of which the South Sami population is one. This population consists of approximately 2000 persons living in the central regions of Sweden and Norway. Fifty‐six older South Sami people participated in the study. Semi‐structured interviews were conducted over the telephone and were analysed using latent content analysis. The main findings show how older South Sami people's expectation for home nursing care contains the same care providers over time, individual adjustments and competent care providers and do not differ from the general Swedish population. Interpersonal interaction is a hallmark of nursing care and other healthcare disciplines. Ideally, interpersonal care is achieved when individual care providers have few care receivers, which promote continuity in care, individual adjustments based on the care receivers individual needs and care providers with professional and relational competence. Background: Cultural competence, an important part of patient-centred care, has been on the nursing agenda for many years. Aim: The aim of this study was to measure the intercultural effectiveness level of paediatric nurses, and to explore relationships between the level of intercultural effectiveness and some sociodemographic variables in paediatric nurses. Method: The study was conducted at İzmir Tepecik Training and Research Hospital's children's clinics in Turkey. A convenience sample of 98 paediatric registered nurses practising at the hospital was evaluated. To collect the study data, a sociodemographic characteristics questionnaire, a Cultural Approach in Nursing Care form and the Intercultural Effectiveness Scale (IES) were used. Results: The participating paediatric nurses' intercultural effectiveness levels were moderate, the problem they experienced most was the language problem and although many of them had not received adequate training in cultural care, based on their experiences, they regarded themselves as culturally competent. Conclusion: Cultural competence is vital in multi-ethnic and multicultural societies. This research aims to identify the opinion of the migrant population regarding patient care that eases their access to Public Healthcare Services. The target population is international migrants who attend two local outpatient clinics in Montevideo, Uruguay. The research is quantitative, descriptive and crosssectional. Data collection was carried out through a survey, applied to 38 migrant users who were over 18 years old, with a minimum of three consultations carried out at the selected outpatient clinics. The sociodemographic profile showed a predominance of the age range between 28 and 38 years old (47.4%), the female gender (68.4%), countries from Latin America and the Caribbean (98.4%) and a higher education level (63.8%). Regarding patient care, 92.1% of respondents reported feeling the attention was suitable at the outpatient clinics and 100% stated they desired to continue attending. The most helpful types of patient care regarding access improvements were those related to communication (97.4%) and the quality of advisory services (89.5%). Cultural care - defined as the Healthcare Team's interest in the patient's culture and beliefs- proved to be the least prevalent with 41.2% and 62.5% negative responses, respectively. Introduction: When cultural nursing care recognizes the value of the culture, beliefs and way of life of individuals, it becomes integral. The question was: What is the experience of Mapuche mothers during the hospitalization of their children in a high complexity hospital in southern Chile, 2017-2018? Course objective: To reveal the experience of Mapuche mothers during the hospitalization of their children in a high complexity hospital in southern Chile, 2017-2018. Methodology: The study was conducted on the targeted ethnography with an intentional sample of 9 participants. The inclusion criteria were: Mapuche mothers who speak Mapudungun with children hospitalized in pediatric services, in a high complexity hospital, who agreed to give a recorded interview after signing an informed consent. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews and field notes. Results: In the metacategory experience of Mapuche mothers, the subcategories were sense of belonging to their culture, complementarity of care, quality of care and discrimination. Conclusion: There are contradictions, disappointments and complications in legitimizing cultural and social diversity, which translate into obstacles to the success of strategies for cultural coherence in health, as traces of discrimination emerge. Aims: To assess whether a training intervention in cross‐cultural communication can positively impact attitudes, knowledge and behaviour and to investigate possible dependencies between these components. Design: (Controlled) longitudinal multimethod evaluation. Methods: A training based on theoretical considerations and informed by semi‐standardized interviews with home care nurses was developed and evaluated. Participants rated their cross‐cultural attitudes, knowledge and behaviour and answered case vignettes assessing their knowledge before and after this training. Shift observations assessed behaviourial aspects at t1 and t2. Data were collected between June 2016–March 2017 and between April 2017–November 2017. Analyses of variance and multiple linear regression models were employed. Results: The training showed promising tendencies with cross‐cultural attitudes, knowledge and behaviour with diverging results for initially quite high self‐reports showing positive but mostly not significant developments and objective assessments mostly showing significant positive changes. There were significant associations between self‐reported cross‐cultural behaviour at t1 and objective cross‐cultural knowledge at t2, whereas self‐rated and objectively assessed knowledge showed no significant associations. Shift observations showed significant positive developments in participants' communication behaviour. Conclusion: Our study shows the importance of using different methods and targeting different outcomes areas to rate impacts of (cross‐cultural) training interventions. Future studies should consider challenging conditions in home care nursing affecting the success of interventions and investigate mechanisms of skill acquisition in nursing. Impact: This is one of very few studies using multi‐method approach to evaluate a cross‐cultural competency intervention and simultaneously assess cross‐cultural attitudes, knowledge and behaviour including possible dependencies between these aspects. This study focuses on nurse educators' perspectives on teaching gerontology within nursing curricula in two cultures. An increasing aging multi-cultural population with large caring needs requires not only informal elder care provided by family members, but also professional nursing staff trained in gerontology. The aim of this study was to explore how Swedish and Thai nurse educators describe the role of teaching gerontology within nursing educations in Sweden and Thailand. Method: Qualitative open-ended interviews with 13 Swedish and Thai nurse educators were conducted and analyzed with qualitative content analysis. Findings: There is a lack of gerontological nursing competence in faculty, as well as bureaucracy impeding necessary changes of curricula, together with difficulties in highlighting positive and cultural aspects of aging. Conclusions: Pedagogical strategies need to be developed by nurse educators specialized in cross-cultural gerontology to improve current and future nursing educations in both countries. Introduction: In the context of health care, cultural and linguistic barriers happen due to the lack of cultural knowledge, of health professionals, towards people's beliefs and interactions in the social, spiritual, cultural and community dimensions. Objective: Understand which strategies are adopted by nurses to overcome cultural and linguistic barriers, with culturally diverse people. Method: Scoping Review, based on the principles advocated by the Joanna Briggs Institute. The databases for research were Proquest and PubMed, in Portuguese, English, French and Spanish. A period of 5 years was defined, for the research of key concepts and controlled vocabulary. Results: Two studies were included in this review. Both selected articles focus on nurses' interventions during care delivery in different countries. Conclusion: Nurses' intervention strategies to overcome cultural and linguistic barriers differ in the two studies, with identical recommendations for improving health care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Leaders are realizing the importance of recognizing diversity and applying cultural humility for successful outcomes. When a difference in perspective is misunderstood or not adequately considered, the resulting conflict interferes with the accomplishment of goals and relationships. With the intent to advance mutual understanding and improve human interactions, a theory to guide nurses and other professions on how to appreciate diversity and apply cultural humility is presented. Method: Guided by Walker and Avant's strategies, the theory was developed from a synthesis of key concepts and constructs from research and scholarly works. Results: The theory of cultural humility is presented. Discussion: To foster a better understanding of the multiple considerations involved in being culturally humble, this theory provides clarity of the related concepts, influences, and outcomes. Introduction: A large body of literature exists on self-management of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in a variety of populations. However, research is limited on how Haitian immigrants self-manage their T2D despite a prevalence of 6.9% in Haiti. The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the lived experience of adult Haitian immigrants managing T2D living in the United States. Methodology: Moustakas's phenomenological approach guided this qualitative study. Adult Haitian immigrants diagnosed with T2D for at least 1 year were interviewed. Individual interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, uploaded into NVivo, and analyzed using Moustakas's existential data analysis process. Results: We interviewed 16 participants (mean age 56;12 females; an average of 11 years living in the United States; mean hemoglobin A1c 8.1%). Four themes emerged: self-reliance, spirituality, nostalgia for home, and a desire for positive patient–provider relationships. Cultural influences and health beliefs may affect individual self-management of T2D in this population. Conclusions: These results may assist clinicians in identifying factors that contribute to suboptimal self-management in Haitian immigrants and help patients reach glycemic control. Introduction: Research is needed to identify influences on safe sex communication among specific culture groups. This study aimed to (1) describe sexual behaviors and indicators of sexual power among partnered Dominican women and (2) identify which of these indicators are significantly associated with safe sex communication. Methodology: Cross-sectional surveys, grounded in the theory of gender and power, were conducted with 100 partnered women at a clinic in southeastern Dominican Republic. Linear regression modeling was used to identify significant associations. Results: Self-efficacy (β = 0.48), total personal monthly income (β = 0.21), and history of sexually transmitted infection (β = 0.19) were significantly associated with higher level of partner safe sex communication. Discussion: Nurse clinicians, educators, and researchers should consider self-efficacy, personal income, and history of sexually transmitted infection when addressing communication in HIV prevention efforts among Dominican women. Introduction: Health care and culture are important to patient care. Theoretical frameworks, service delivery, and self-awareness are important to the provider/patient. Provider care varies, and studies are needed to understand the current interactions between providers, patients, and culture. Methodology: This was a prospective, descriptive correlational pilot study. Providers and patients completed a baseline assessment of culture, as well as a Brief Mood Introspection Scale at each visit at the patient's standard of care visit (i.e., visit as part of clinical procedures). Results: The providers and baseline assessment of culture showed higher than average cultural awareness. All four mood subscales show no statistically significant differences in patient or providers' mood. There were no significant differences in mood when considering differences and similarities between gender, race, and ethnicity. Patients and/or populations may come from anywhere in the world, some of whom may be seeking refuge from conflict and/or war. In addition, nurses may be employed in other countries. Problem: Nurse educators may not have international experiences or know about global opportunities or how to navigate them. Approach: Fulbright Scholar Awards are one way for nursing educators to experience academic opportunities in another country, working with international colleagues and/or students. Outcomes: One nurse educator describes her experience from successful application through the postaward period. Conclusions: Fulbright offers opportunities for academics to engage in teaching and/or research, work with international colleagues, and be immersed in other cultures. Background: Cancer-related physical symptoms can decrease patients' overall quality of life and are often underdiagnosed. The Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS) is widely used in palliative care for cancer patients to easily assess cancer patients' symptoms. It has been often modified, adding symptoms and explanations, and translated into many languages. The European Association of Palliative Care research team developed a database, which included the modified 12-item ESAS-r as the symptom assessment tool. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to achieve the translation and cross-cultural validation in French of the 12-item ESAS-r, the ESAS12-F. Design: A French version of the ESAS-r was developed using a standardized forward and backward translation method. Patients completed the ESAS12-F and provided feedback on the translation. Setting/Subjects: Forty-five patients with advanced cancer, followed by the palliative care team from the Lyon Sud University Hospital in France, were recruited. Results: Eighty-nine percent of patients considered the ESAS easy to understand. They highlighted some concerns more about the tool itself than the translation: the time line "now," the difficulty to quantify a symptom in a numerical evaluation. Some items (sleep and appetite) needed to be reread and for some others (digestive and psychological symptoms, and well-being) to be reordered in the questionnaire. Conclusion: The ESAS12-F is well accepted and easy to use for the cancer patients. The next step is to carry out a psychometric validation of the definitive version of the ESAS12-F. Background and Purpose: Few tools exist to measure real-time patient demands for care and match them with the supply of available nurses. We translated the Oncology Acuity Tool into a French version (for Switzerland) and conducted preliminary validation. Methods: The setting was two French-speaking Swiss hospitals. Methods included translation and harmonization by experts. Content validity was assessed among nine oncology nurses. Inter-rater reliability was evaluated based on case studies. Results: Content validity results met or exceeded pre-set cut-points and inter-rater reliability results were moderate. Several indicators were changed, added or removed. Conclusion: The Swiss tool may improve real-time estimates of patients' nursing care needs and assist with efficient resource allocation. Additional validation studies are recommended. Aims and Objectives: To develop an understanding of how Indigenous mothers experience selecting and using health services for their infants can assist nurses in improving their access to care. This understanding may ultimately lead to improved health outcomes for Indigenous infants and their families. Background: Access to acute care services is important to minimise morbidity and mortality from urgent health issues; however, Indigenous people describe difficulties accessing care. Indigenous infants are known to use the emergency department frequently, yet little is known about the facilitators and barriers their mothers experience when accessing these services. Design: This study undertook a qualitative, interpretive description design. Methods: This article adheres to the reporting guidelines of COREQ. Data collection methods included interviews and a discussion group with Indigenous mothers (n = 19). Data analysis was collaborative and incorporated both Indigenous and Western ways of knowing, through the application of Two‐Eyed Seeing. Results: A thematic summary resulted in six themes: (a) problematic wait times; (b) the hidden costs of acute care; (c) paediatric care; (d) trusting relationships; (e) racism and discrimination; and (f) holistic care. Conclusions: The experiences of Indigenous mothers using acute care services for their infants suggest a role for culturally safe and trauma and violence‐informed care by health providers in the acute care context. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Nurses can improve access to acute care services for Indigenous mothers and infants through the provision of culturally safe and trauma and violence‐informed approaches care, by building rapport with families, providing care that is respectful and nonjudgemental, eliminating fees associated with using acute care services and linking families with cultural resources both in hospital and within the community. An historical overview of Leininger's Theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality also known as the Culture Care Theory (CCT) and evolution of the Sunrise Enabler are presented along with descriptions of the theory purpose, goal, tenets, basic assumptions, major core constructs, and orientational definitions. Recent articles, books, and book chapters provide relevant exemplars to enhance scholarly understanding and application of theory constructs. Proposed future directions encompass using the CCT to guide research of discovery and translational research projects for evidenced-based nursing practice; develop nursing courses and curricula to prepare culturally competent nurses; guide future culturally competent administrative and leadership policies and procedures; inform public policy related to cultural diversity and underserved populations; promote grant writing initiatives to enhance cultural diversity in hiring nursing staff, supervisors, and faculty; and promote admission of nursing students from underserved and/or diverse backgrounds. Introduction: Transition from childhood to adulthood is an important and challenging period for both adolescents and their parents, particularly in societies undergoing development and change. In Iran, cultural and social change is inextricably linked to, and strongly impacts on, family units. Aim: To explore the experiences of parents and the strategies they use in interacting with their adolescent children. Method: Qualitative descriptive research using in-depth interviews was conducted with 23 parents of adolescents in Iran. Transcribed data were subjected to thematic analysis. Results: Parents used two key approaches to effectively interact with their adolescent children. The first, "transformed parenting" involved the parents changing their parenting style and practices. The second approach, "child orientation" involved the parents trying to control, educate, and guide their child. Implication for transcultural practice: Understanding how parents experience interactions with adolescents in the context of Iranian culture and increasing modernity will guide nurses to foster effective parenting strategies for optimal adolescent development. Introduction: The purpose of this study was to describe basic palliative care from the acute care nurses' perspective with consideration for culturally diverse populations. Participants focused their responses based on their experiences with Hmong patients. The concept of cultural safety was explored to improve basic palliative care practice in acute care settings. Method: A qualitative approach was utilized. Thirty-four nurses participated in either focus group or individual interviews. Results: Assisting tradition, understanding culture, and managing language barriers were identified as themes unique to providing basic palliative care to Hmong patients. Discussion: Nurses experienced uncertainty and inadequacy of resources when caring for patients from a Hmong background. Nurses also recognized the strong family ties in this specific population and the importance of supporting tradition while in the hospital. Utilizing Wood and Schwass' framework of cultural safety could guide nurses providing basic palliative care to Hmong patients and other culturally diverse patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
