Suicide among youth is a subject of growing concern. Successful suicides, however, represent only a slight part of the total problem. A study conducted with 666 francophones students attending four C.E.G.E.P. in the Montreal territory reveals that 21.2 % of them say that they have already experienced serious suicidal ideation. 12.2 % have had these experiences within the last twelve months. There are also 3.6 % of the students who admitted to having attempted suicide during the same period, and 8.1 % during their lifetime. More than half of the students say they also have experienced suicidal obsessions such as a fear or a desire to throw themselves in front of the metro. Parental separation and poor health represent the two most serious risk factors. Nearly three quarters of the people who have had serious suicidal thoughts have thought of plans or have confided them to members of their social circle... The reaction of the milieu was reported as positive in only half the cases. Clinical interviews with 25 of the respondents showed that the suicidal ideation reported, corresponded, in almost all cases, with a period of great anguish. The fact of thinking of suicide did have, on the other hand, some positive effects in producing awareness of the possibility of a control over one's destiny.

A new satellite-like replicating RNA found in association with cucumber mosaic virus type 1 (CMV-1), one of the earliest CMV isolates described (Doolittle, 1920), was identified and partially characterized. CMV-1-associated RNA 5, or (1)CARNA 5, was isolated from CMV-1 propagated in tomato, where it failed to induce lethal necrosis. In this way it was distinguished from CARNA 5 with the tomato necrosis-causing ability, which was redesignated (n)CARNA 5. Although (1)CARNA 5 and (n)CARNA 5 could be separated by 7.5% polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis under certain conditions, the molecules are probably identical in size, or nearly so. (1)CARNA 5 and (n)CARNA 5 have only limited nucleotide sequence homology. This is also evident from the different multitransitional absorbance-temperature profiles that can be obtained during the thermal denaturation of their respective double-stranded forms. In mixed infections in tomato, the replication of (1)CARNA 5 was also supported by CMV strains WT or S, while (n)CARNA 5 was supported by CMV-1. The biologically different (1)CARNA 5 and (n)CARNA 5 can be considered sequence variants among a group of small satellite-like RNA molecules dependent upon CMV for their replication.

A study made on a sample of 2,327 Montréal area students of third, fourth and fifth year of High School shows that suicidal behaviors ("les suicidaires") account for 13.2 % of youth interrogated, and that 6.7 % admit to having attempted suicide. The suicidal behavior rate is higher among girls than boys and it is lower in schools where the proportion of allophones is over 50 %. The separation of parents and the father's negligence are factors that contribute to raising the rate of suicidal behavior. However, a deceased father or mother has no effect on the rate. The rate of suicidal behavior is at its highest when there is a substitute parent. A relation exists, however, between a father's level of scolarity and the family structure. When students come from an unbroken home, there are fewer suicidal subjects when the father has a high rather than a low level of scolarity ; this difference disappears when the family is separated. However, the authors have noticed a greater rate of separation among parents with a higher level of scolarity. As for the higher rate of suicidal behaviors among girls, it is not entirely connected to poor parent-child relations. The data suggest to the authors that parent conflicts could possibly perturb girls more than boys. And finally, although serious health problems are associated to a higher rate of suicidal behavior, this link is relatively indépendant of the quality of parent-child relations.

Seven CARNA 5 (Cucumber mosaic virus-Associated RNA 5) variants were obtained from an Indonesian cucumber mosaic virus isolate (designated CMV-In) by serial passage of this virus in squash, Chenopodium quinoa, tobacco, and tomato. Bioassays of the isolated CARNA 5 variants for their capability to induce lethal necrosis in tomato allowed categorization of the CARNA 5 variants as either necrogenic or nonnecrogenic. Comparison of the CARNA 5 sequences with sequences previously published shows that in general CMV satellites display a high degree of nucleotide sequence conservation. Except for two sharply defined domains of variability, the sequences of the necrogenic CARNA 5s are essentially conserved, whereas those of the nonnecrogenic CARNA 5s possess at least nine additional hypervariable domains. In eight positions of the CARNA 5 sequences all necrogenic variants differ uniquely from those that are nonnecrogenic. All CMV satellites compared in this work possess open reading frames (ORFs), with equivalent initiation codons, capable of encoding polypeptides of significant lengths. Two equivalent or identical ORFs were found only in the necrogenic CARNA 5s, whereas a variable-length ORF was found in the sequences of all the CARNA 5 variants compared. These findings constitute a basis for experiments aimed at determining the biological significance, if any, of these ORFs.

After reviewing the beliefs concerning folk illnesses such as susto, colico and pena, which are said to be caused by emotions in Latin America, we tried to understand the attitudes Indians have toward these emotions. The main states discussed are fright, anger and grief and they are related to a universe of spirits seen as the agents of these states or as being annoyed by them. Although there are obvious parallels between his mode of thinking and psychosomatic medicine, the underlying principles are quite different. The emotions involved in the causation of illnesses are regarded as a reflection of weaknesses in the individual. But if Indians consider emotions to be a sign of weakness, they do not see them as the opposite pole to reason as Western philosophy and psychoanalysis do (id. against the ego). The latter points to traumatic experiences as a very important factor in the genesis of neurosis, but during the cure these experiences must be talked about and thus integrated into rational discourse (Das soll ich Werden). Native healers, on the contrary, do most of the work of the cure and they oftenenter into altered states of consciousness, either through drugs or alcohol, in order to supersede the spirits overpowering the patient or to gain the complicity of superior gods, thus making only minimal use of verbal exchange.
