We report a 19F nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study on single-crystal KCa2Fe4As4F2 (Tc ∼ 33.3 K). The 19F NMR spectral shape of KCa2Fe4As4F2 is weakly dependent on temperature and the Knight shift is small, which implies weak coupling between the CaF layer and the FeAs layer. The temperature dependence of 1/19T1 shows a hump below Tc, however the 1/75T1 decreases just below Tc, which implies that there are strong in-plane magnetic fluctuations in the CaF layers than in the FeAs layers. This may be caused by the motion of vortices. The absence of the coherence peak suggests unconventional superconductivity in KCa2Fe4As4F2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background The main purpose of this paper is to introduce a method that can accurately locate the posterior capsule of the lens to facilitate a relatively complete resection of the anterior vitreous body. Methods A total of 51 patients in the experimental group and control group were enrolled in this study. Phacoemulsification combined with vitrectomy was performed in all cases. After the cataract procedure was completed in the control group, the surgeon performed a conventional anterior vitrectomy with the operative eye. In the experimental group, anterior vitrectomy was performed according to the threadiness corrugation of the posterior capsule of the lens. During the operation, with the help of triamcinolone, two surgeons confirmed the resection of the anterior vitreous cortex; the best corrected visual acuity and intraocular pressure of all patients were recorded at 1 week, 1 month and 3 months after surgery. Results Fifty patients underwent phacoemulsification combined with vitrectomy, except one patient in the experimental group who was lost to follow-up. After surgery, no significant complications were observed in all patients except two patients in the control group with temporary increases in intraocular pressure. There was no significant difference in preoperative visual acuity between the two groups (t = 0.83, P = 0.25). Both groups had varying degrees of improvement in best corrected visual acuity at 1 week, 1 month and 3 months after surgery. Moreover, there was no significant difference in BCVA between the two groups at the three follow-up time points (t=-1.15, -1.65, -1.09, P = 0.53, 0.21, 0.23). After surgery, no significant complications were observed in all patients except two patients in the control group with temporary increases in intraocular pressure. Incomplete resection of the anterior vitreous cortex was observed in 2 patients in each group, but there was no significant difference (χ2 = 7.81, P > 0.05). Conclusion In the process of cataract surgery combined with vitrectomy, thready corrugation appears in the posterior capsule of the lens and is an important sign of its localization. Anterior vitrectomy can be accomplished safely and effectively with the help of thread-like corrugation, and the surgical effect is almost the same as that of traditional surgery. Especially suitable for beginners in vitreous surgery.

We report the synthesis and physical properties of a nickel-based arsenide ThNiAsN. The new compound crystallizes in a ZrCuSiAs-type structure (space group ) with lattice parameters and . Bulk superconductivity at is demonstrated by the measurements of electrical resistivity, dc magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity. The upper critical field at zero temperature, , and the specific-heat jump at Tc are 6.1 T and , respectively. These two physical quantities, together with the Tc value, are the highest among the Ni-based ZrCuSiAs-type materials. Epstein–Barr virus (EBV)-associated gastric carcinoma (EBVaGC) is a distinct entity with a conspicuous tumor microenvironment compared with EBV-negative gastric carcinoma. However, the exact role of EBV in gastric carcinogenesis remains elusive. In the present study, we found that EBV upregulated CXCL8 expression, and CXCL8 significantly promoted vasculogenic mimicry (VM) formation of gastric carcinoma (GC) cells. In accordance with these observations, overexpression of CXCL8 increased cell proliferation and migration of AGS and BGC823 cells, while knockdown of CXCL8 with siRNA inhibited cell proliferation and migration of AGS-EBV cells. In addition, activation of NF-κB signaling was involved in VM formation induced by CXCL8, which was blocked by NF-κB inhibitors BAY 11-7082 and BMS345541. Furthermore, EBV-encoded lncRNA RPMS1 activated the NF-κB signaling cascade, which is responsible for EBV-induced VM formation. Both xenografts and clinical samples of EBVaGC exhibit VM histologically, which are correlated with CXCL8 overexpression. Finally, CXCL8 is positively correlated with overall survival in GC patients. In conclusion, EBV-upregulated CXCL8 expression promotes VM formation in GC via NF-κB signaling, and CXCL8 might serve as a novel anti-tumor target for EBVaGC.

A comprehensive study on the liquid mixing with/without instantaneous reactions was conducted using planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) technique, where a novel reactive PLIF technique was adopted to quantitatively visualize the dynamic variation of the concentration of fluorescence dye due to signal quenching by a Fenton reaction. The factors (e.g., tracer injection direction, tracer injection position, impeller speed) influencing the reactive and non-reactive mixing processes were investigated, and the mixing performances were characterized by non-reactive mixing times (τ95 and τ99), and reactive mixing time (θ99), respectively. The experimental results from the 2-D measurements of liquid mixing behavior emphasized the significance of the understanding on the spatio-temporal mixing patterns: not only did the tracer injection position affect the mixing performances in the stirred tank, but also the sampling position to monitor the mixing status would lead to a large difference in evaluating the mixing performance. For the stirred tank with fast reactions, the reactive mixing performance had a strong interplay with the non-reactive mixing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract We successfully prepared water-soluble fullerenol [C60(OH)46] that exhibited a high singlet oxygen quantum yield and efficiently generated reactive oxygen species. Additionally, the water-soluble C60(OH)46 with a higher composition of exposed hydroxyl groups had superior two-photon stability and characteristics compared with that with a lower composition of such groups. Therefore, the prepared fullerenol can be an effective two-photon photosensitizer. The water-soluble C60(OH)46 had favorable two-photon properties. During two-photon photodynamic therapy, the water-soluble C60(OH)46 had substantial antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli at an ultralow-energy level of 211.2 nJ pixel−1 with 800 scans and a photoexcited wavelength of 760 nm.

Monitoring the consumption of pharmaceuticals and licit drugs is important for assessing the needs of public health owing to the impact on individuals as well as society. The present work applied wastewater-based epidemiology to profile the spatial patterns of metformin, nicotine, and caffeine use and their correlations. Influent wastewater samples were collected from 27 wastewater treatment plants in 22 typical Chinese cities that covered all geographic regions of the country. The consumption of metformin ranged from 0.02 g/d/1000 inh to 8.92 g/d/1000 inh, whereas caffeine and nicotine consumption ranged from 4.33 g/d/1000 inh to 394 g/d/1000 inh and 0.17 g/d/1000 inh to 1.88 g/d/1000 inh, respectively. There were significant regional differences in the consumption of caffeine, with the highest consumption in East China and the lowest consumption in Northeast China. The consumption and concentration of caffeine were related to the gross domestic product and per capita disposable income of urban residents, respectively. There was a correlation between the concentrations of caffeine and cotinine (a nicotine metabolite), thereby indicating that individuals that use one of these substances are likely to use the other substance. A significant relationship was found between the concentration of metformin and cotinine, thereby implying that the use of tobacco may be correlated with type 2 diabetes. Co-analysis of these substances in wastewater may provide a more accurate picture of substance use situations within different communities and provide more information on human health, human behavior, and the economy. High-quality coalescence overgrowth of patterned-grown GaN nanocolumns on c-plane sapphire substrate with metal organic chemical vapor deposition is demonstrated. Although domain structures of a tens of micron scale in the overgrown layer can be identified with cathodoluminescence measurement, from atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurement, the surface roughness of the overgrown layer in an area of 5×5 μm2 is as small as 0.411 nm, which is only one-half that of the high-quality GaN thin-film template directly grown on sapphire substrate (the control sample). Based on the AFM and depth-dependent x-ray diffraction measurements near the surface of the overgrown layer, the dislocation density is reduced to the order of 107 cm-2, which is one order of magnitude lower than that of the control sample and two to three orders of magnitude lower than those of ordinary GaN templates for fabricating light-emitting diodes. Also, the lateral domain size, reaching a level of ∼2.7 μm, becomes three times larger than the control sample. Meanwhile, the ratio of photoluminescence intensity at room temperature over that at low temperature of the overgrown sample is at least six times higher than that of the control sample. Although the strain in nanocolumns is almost completely released, a stress of ∼0.66 GPa is rebuilt when the coalescence overgrowth is implemented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We fabricated nanomaterials comprising amino-functionalized and nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (amino-N-GQDs) and investigated their photostability and intrinsic luminescence in the near-infrared spectrum to determine their suitability as contrast agents in two-photon imaging (TPI). We observed that amino-N-GQDs with a higher amount of bonded nitrogen and amino-functionalized groups (6.2%) exhibited superior two-photon properties to those with a lower amount of such nitrogen and groups (4.9%). These materials were conjugated with polymers containing sulfur (polystyrene sulfonate, PSS) and nitrogen atoms (polyethylenimine, PEI), forming amino-N-GQD–PSS–PEI specimens (amino-N-GQD-polymers). The polymers exhibited a high quantum yield, remarkable stability, and notable two-photon properties and generated no reactive oxygen species, rendering them excellent two-photon contrast agents for bioimaging. An antiepidermal growth factor receptor (AbEGFR) was used for labeling to increase specificity. Two-photon imaging (TPI) of amino-N-GQD (6.2%)-polymer-AbEGFR-treated A431 cancer cells revealed remarkable brightness, intensity, and signal-to-noise ratios for each observation at a two-photon excitation power of 16.9 nJ pixel−1 under 30 scans and a three-dimensional (3D) depth of 105 µm, indicating that amino-N-GQD (6.2%)-polymer-AbEGFR-treated cells can achieve two-photon luminescence with 71 times less power required for two-photon autofluorescence (1322.8 nJ pixel−1 with 500 scans) of similar intensity. This economy can minimize photodamage to cells, rendering amino-N-GQD-polymers suitable for noninvasive 3D bioimaging.

We produced an anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) structure with periodic nanopores on the surface of flip-chip blue light-emitting diodes (FC-BLEDs). The nanopores had diameters ranging from 73 to 85 nm and were separated by distances ranging from approximately 10 to 15 nm. The light extraction efficiency enhancement of the FC-BLEDs subjected to different durations of the second pore-widening process was approximately 1.6-2.9%. The efficiency enhancement may be attributed to the following mechanism: periodic nanopores on the surface of FC-BLEDs reduce the critical angle of total reflection and effective energy transfer from a light emitter into a surface plasmon mode produced by AAO.
