While the predictive power of genetic information is not yet strong enough to apply to individuals in the classroom, this study aimed to explore how genetic information may be received in educational settings as a potentially important source of individual differences in academic achievement and learning difficulties. Focus group discussions with teachers and parents were analyzed using qualitative and linguistic methods. Results showed that teachers and parents had similar knowledge of and questions about genetic information and how it could be used in education; both expressed concerns regarding the ethics of its use and suggested other professionals that should be involved in decisions regarding genetic input in education. Parents' personal struggles to obtain appropriate diagnoses and support for their children with learning difficulties, however, added an emotional edge to their views. Families' direct experiences with educational systems, often adversarial, afford them an authority that should be acknowledged by policymakers. Although practical applications of genetic data to inform school classroom decision‐making are not yet possible because of lack of predictive power at the individual level, their eventual advent seems likely. Therefore, we conducted three focus groups with teachers and parents to gather their perspectives on the use of genetic information in educational systems. The data were analyzed using qualitative and linguistic approaches. Direct experience with children with learning disabilities impacts what teachers and parents need to know about genetics, influences the emotions they bring to the issue, and inform their understanding of what professionals are required for the proper utilization of genetic information in educational settings. Objective: We wanted to explore how angiopoietin-like 3 (ANGPTL3) impact hyperlipidemia-induced renal injury. Methods: ANGPTL3 knockout mice and wild-type C57 mice were set up in four groups (N = 5) depending on a normal or 60% high-fat diet: wild-type with normal diet (WT), angptl3-/- with normal diet (KO), wild-type + high-fat diet (WT + HF) and angptl3-/- + high-fat diet (KO + HF). The detection time points were the 9th, 13th, 17th and 21st weeks after modeling. Serum lipid and urinary protein levels of mice in each group were detected, and pathological changes in the kidney were analyzed. Moreover, the expression of ANGPTL3, α-actinin-4 (ACTN4), CD2-associated protein (CD2AP) and podocin was tested in the glomerulus by immunohistochemistry (IHC). Results: In the WT + HF group, hyperlipidemia and proteinuria could be observed at the 9th week and were gradually aggravated with time. Compared with WT + HF mice, the levels of serum lipids and proteinuria in KO + HF mice were significantly reduced, and the width of podocyte foot processes (FPs) fusion was also markedly improved. The IHC results suggested that in WT + HF mice, the expression of ANGPTL3 was significantly enhanced. After modeling, ACTN4 expression was markedly weakened in the glomeruli of WT + HF mice. Different to WT mice, ACTN4 expression was not observed obviously change in KO + HF mice. Compared with the normal diet group, the expression of podocin showed a decline in WT mice treated with high-fat diet and showed a significant difference from the 17th week. In addition, podocin expression in KO + HF glomeruli was also found to be weak but not significantly different from that in WT + HF glomeruli at the four time points. The expression of CD2AP showed similar results among the four groups. Conclusion: ANGPTL3 could play a role in the mechanism of hyperlipidemia-associated podocyte injury via ACTN4. NanoCrystalline Cellulose (NCC) was isolated via ultrasonic cavitation assisted acid hydrolysis method. Characterization was done using Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) together with Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) imaging to double prove the existence of NCC. DLS measures length of 236.6 nm with width of 34.40 nm, supported by SEM which showed NCC a rod-like shaped particle with large surface area and high porosity. It was then attempted for heavy metal cadmium ion (Cd2+) removal from aqueous solution. The pH implication to the rate of Cd2+ adsorption was investigated by varying the solution to pH 4, pH 7 and pH 10 over a duration of 120 minutes. The removal efficiency was analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) resulting in pH 7 being the most favorable for Cd2+ removal.

OBJECTIVES. The goals were to (1) compare the causes, clinical presentation, and prevalence of acute renal failure in pediatric rhabdomyolysis with the published data for adults; (2) determine predictors of acute renal failure in pediatric patients with rhabdomyolysis; and (3) explore the relationship of acute renal failure with treatment modalities such as fluid and bicarbonate administration. METHODS. We performed a retrospective chart review to identify patients with creatinine kinase levels of >1000 IU/L who were treated in the emergency department of a tertiary pediatric hospital between 1993 and 2003, and we constructed regression models. RESULTS. Two hundred ten patients were studied. One hundred ninety-one patients met study eligibility (128 male and 63 female), with a median age of 11 years. The most common documented symptoms were muscle pain (45%), fever (40%), and symptoms of viral infection (39%). The most common causes of pediatric rhabdomyolysis were viral myositis (38%), trauma (26%), and connective tissue disease (5%). Six of 37 patients with creatinine kinase levels of [greater than or equal to] 6000 IU/L had previously undiagnosed dermatomyositis or hereditary metabolic disease, compared with 10 of 154 patients with creatinine kinase levels of 1000 to 5999 IU/L. Nine of 191 patients developed acute renal failure. None of 99 patients with initial urinary heme dipstick results of CONCLUSIONS. The cause of acute pediatric rhabdomyolysis is different from that of adult rhabdomyolysis. The risk of acute renal failure in children is much less than the risk reported for adults.
