The possible use of level-crossing spectroscopy to study properties of excited states generated by gas excitation of fast ionic beams has been investigated. With a 20-400 keV Be+ beam excited by means of helium gas, radiative lifetimes of 2D and 2F levels in Be II have been determined together with the fine-structure separation of the 5f 2F level in Be II and the hyperfine coupling constant for the 2s3d 1D level in Be I and the 2p 2p level in Be II.

Penicillium roqueforti is currently divided into two varieties, one used for cheese starter cultures, P. roqueforti var. roqueforti and one ubiquitous patulin-producing variety, P. roqueforti var. carneum. The ribosomal regions comprising the 5.8S gene and the internal transcribed spacers, ITS I and ITS II, have been analysed from 10 isolates belonging to each variety. The 10 P. roqueforti var. carneum isolates were separated into two groups of five on the basis of 12 base-pair differences in the ITS regions. One of the groups of P. roqueforti var. carneum in the following designated P. carneum differed from P. roqueforti var. roqueforti here designated P. roqueforti in just two positions, while the other group, here called P. paneum differed from P. roqueforti in 12 positions. Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis substantiated these findings, and a comparison of secondary metabolites produced by the three groups showed that the P. roqueforti isolates all produce Penicillium Roqueforti (PR) toxin, marcfortines and fumigaclavine A, while the P. carneum isolates produce patulin, penitrem A and mycophenolic acid, as well as unidentified metabolites. P. paneum produces secondary metabolites in five chromophore families including the known mycotoxins patulin and botryodiploidin. On the basis of these findings it is proposed that P. roqueforti is reclassified into three species named P. roqueforti, P. carneum and P. paneum.

This work contributes to the growing body of work, conducted on the vicinities between well-being and biomedical treatments in health design. The article presents and discusses the design of the new delivery rooms at a Danish hospital in Hjørring, including the multi-sensory artwork: Nordjyske stemninger (Moods of Northern Jutland). The authors are both artists, architects, and researchers in this project, thus it is not the purpose of his article to report evaluation results. However, it is our intention to share and discuss contemporary healthcare design strategies and point to the importance of considering the interplay between cultural, social change, and environment in order to bridge the know-do gap in healing architecture. Based on our work we give a concrete example of a case aimed at re-introducing art in healthcare environments, supporting the caregiver, the laboring mother, and her companion in the existential and life-changing moment. The article includes descriptions of the design process including interviews, observations, and reflections. In this case, we want to argue that the gap between visions and implementation in evidence-based design and healing architecture, must be understood as a symptom of a deeper epistemological and philosophical challenge concerning the dichotomous and demarcating understanding of the relation between the human and its surroundings, obstructing ecological coherence and validity and silo stacking of results not utilizing the rich potentiality of interdisciplinarity synergies. As it is difficult to convey a bodily and sensory experience in only words and images, we hope that the reader will use their imagination while reading the descriptions of a situated experience throughout the article. The Ukrainian sculptor Alexander Archipenko described the cause and impulse of creative motivation as seeing the absence of a thing. With this lens we invite the reader behind the scenes in the creation of somesthetic design of the new delivery rooms, now being the background of more than 1.000 births a year in the Northern part of Jutland. The argument of this article uses artistic practice to explore a new potential healthcare practice, with overseen and neglected potentialities in a supportive somesthetic healthcare design. The article is structured in four parts: Healing environments, Somesthetic design framework, The sensory delivery room, and Reflection.

All eukaryotic forms of DNA topoisomerase I contain an extensive and highly charged N-terminal domain. This domain contains several nuclear localization sequences and is essential for in vivo function of the enzyme. However, so far no direct function of the N-terminal domain in the in vitro topoisomerase I reaction has been reported. In this study we have compared the in vitro activities of a truncated form of human topoisomerase I lacking amino acids 1-206 (p67) with the full-length enzyme (p91). Using these enzyme forms, we have identified for the first time a direct role of residues within the N-terminal domain in modulating topoisomerase I catalysis, as revealed by significant differences between p67 and p91 in DNA binding, cleavage, strand rotation, and ligation. A comparison with previously published studies showing no effect of deleting the first 174 or 190 amino acids of topoisomerase I (Stewart, L., Ireton, G. C., and Champoux, J. J. (1999) J. Biol. Chem. 274, 32950-32960; Bronstein, I. B., Wynne-Jones, A., Sukhanova, A., Fleury, F., Ianoul, A., Holden, J. A., Alix, A. J., Dodson, G. G., Jardillier, J. C., Nabiev, I., and Wilkinson, A. J. (1999) Anticancer Res. 19, 317-327) suggests a pivotal role of amino acids 191-206 in catalysis. Taken together the presented data indicate that at least part(s) of the N-terminal domain regulate(s) enzyme/DNA dynamics during relaxation most probably by controlling non-covalent DNA binding downstream of the cleavage site either directly or by coordinating DNA contacts by other parts of the enzyme.

Nowadays, the increasing demand for power transmission capacity, because of the transition towards renewable energy sources, results in the realization of new overhead line and underground cable connections. Especially for new overhead line projects, Transmission System Operators are facing challenges related to a) acquiring permissions for new Right-of-Ways and b) the visual impact due to the public opposition to new overhead lines. Therefore, the need for compact tower designs, which should also meet the environmental impact requirements, is significantly increased. Until now, such designs are based on steel and concrete. However, in the recent years, focus has also been given on composite-based transmission towers, which could provide a remarkable alternative solution for fulfilling the above-mentioned requirements. Towards this direction, BYSTRUP designed the innovative 2x400 kV ‘Y’ composite tower, under the ‘Power Pylons of the Future (PoPyFu)’ project in Denmark; this tower design is characterized by its significantly reduced footprint, i.e. 22.5 meters high. The latter is mainly because no insulator strings are used, by utilizing each composite cross-arm as an insulator. One important design parameter regards the performance of the composite tower against lightning related outages. The lightning performance considers outages due to a) shielding failure flashovers and b) backflashovers. In [1], the performance of the 400 kV double-circuit ‘Y’ pylon against shielding failures and the optimal position of the shield wires were studied and verified by means of small-scale experimental tests. In this paper, focus was given on studying the performance of the ‘Y’ pylon against backflashovers. As starting points, the backflashover analysis was performed based on the modified tower design and on a conceptual earthing design. The results of the study were used to draw basic conclusions and give recommendations for further investigations related to the tower design.

Udgivelsesdato: 2007 Summer This study provides a new version of the arrayed primer extension (APEX) protocol adapted to the 'array of arrays' platform using an instrumental setup for microarray processing not previously described. The primary aim of the study is to implement a system for rational cost-efficient genotyping where multiple singlenucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and individuals are genotyped on each microarray slide. Genotyping results are collected across 185 healthy Danish subjects and 76 SNPs on chromosome 3q13.31, because linkage to atopic disease phenotypes have been suggested in the Danish population. Linkage disequilibrium (LD) results from the experimental data are used in a novel comparison to baseline data defined by the international HapMap SNP database. Comparison on the LD results reveals a strong linear correlation irrespective of LD measure considered: R2 (D') = 0.73 and R2(r2) = 0.54. In conclusion, our results show that this setup is strong enough to support high-throughput genotyping, and these observations support that the HapMap genotype resource is important for defining SNP panels aimed at gene mapping in local subpopulations from Europe.

The present paper considers shape control of adaptive architectural structures for improvement of structural performance by recognizing changes in their environments and loads, adapting to meet goals, and using past events to improve future performance or maintain serviceability. The general scopes of the paper are to develop a new adaptive kinetic architectural structure, particularly a reconfigurable architectural structure which can transform body shape from planar geometries to hyper-surfaces using different control strategies, i.e. a transformation into more than one or two different shape alternatives. The adaptive structure is a proposal for a responsive building envelope which is an idea of a first level operational framework for present and future investigations towards performance based responsive architectures through a set of responsive typologies. A mock-up concept of a secondary environmental system to a primary structural system joint into a collective behavioral system equipment with an actuator system is presented. NDIR is proposed for monitoring of air pollutants emitted by ship engines. Careful optical filtering overcomes the challenge of optical detection of NO2 in humid exhaust gas, despite spectroscopic overlap with the water vapour band.
