International audience; We propose to test if gravimetry can prove useful in discriminating different models of long-term deep crustal processes in the case of the Taiwan mountain belt. We discuss two existing tectonic models that differ in the deep processes proposed to sustain the long-term growth of the orogen. One model assumes underplating of the uppermost Eurasian crust with subduction of the deeper part of the crust into the mantle. The other one suggests the accretion of the whole Eurasian crust above crustal-scale ramps, the lower crust being accreted into the collisional orogen. We compute the temporal gravity changes caused only by long-term rock mass transfers at depth for each of them. We show that the underplating model implies a rate of gravity change of −6 × 10 −2 µGal yr −1 , a value that increases to 2 × 10 −2 µGal yr −1 if crustal subduction is neglected. If the accretion of the whole Eurasian crust occurs, a rate of 7 × 10 −2 µGal yr −1 is obtained. The two models tested differ both in signal amplitude and spatial distribution. The yearly gravity changes expected by long-term deep crustal mass processes in Taiwan are two orders of magnitude below the present-day uncertainty of land-based gravity measurements. Assuming that these annually averaged long-term gravity changes will linearly accumulate with ongoing mountain building, multidecadal time-series are needed to identify comparable rates of gravity change. However, as gravity is sensitive to any mass redistribution, effects of short-term processes such as seismicity and surface mass transfers (erosion, sedimentation, groundwater) may prevent from detecting any long-term deep signal. This study indicates that temporal gravity is not appropriate for deciphering the long-term deep crustal processes involved in the Taiwan mountain belt.

Infections caused by multiresistant bacterial pathogens are a significant problem worldwide, turning the search for natural compounds to act as alternatives to antibiotics of major importance. The aim of the present study was to investigate the in vitro antimicrobial activity of 7α-acetoxy-6β-hydroxyroyleanone (1), isolated from Plectranthus grandidentatus (Lamiaceae), and 11 additional royleanone abietane derivatives of 1 (2–12) against important Gram-positive human bacterial pathogens. Results showed that the aromatic and alkylic esters 2, 3 and 5 are more active than 1 against Enterococcus and Staphylococcus (minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values ranging from 0.98 to 62.50 µg/mL). Moreover, 7α-acetoxy-6β-hydroxy-12-O-(4-chloro)benzoylroyleanone (2) gave rise to a new antibacterial-prototype (MIC values of 3.91–15.63 µg/mL against Staphylococcus and of 0.98–3.91 µg/mL against Enterococcus). The results showed that the compounds under analysis also present antimicrobial activity against resistant bacteria. The hydrophobic extra-interactions with bacterial targets seem to play an important role on the activity of royleanones derivatives.

The aim of the research undertaken was to get to know the degree of implementation of discovery tools in university libraries in the Iberian Peninsula. It also allowed an initial evaluation of the facilities offered by the tools implemented. With regard to the presence of discovery tools we find a different situation in the two countries, with a higher degree of implementation in Spain. As for the behaviour of the discovery layers, the eight tools evaluated performed appropriately. Discovery tools represent a considerable advance. The combining of the library’s catalogue and indexes to articles with other sources of information in a single unified interface is an unquestionable improvement. However, catalogues and databases still fulfil some purposes better than discovery tools. Libraries need to consider their clients when putting up on their websites the various tools for gaining access to contents.

Identificada a situação de contaminação da água subterrânea, que constitui um problema grave para a utilização desse recurso, suspeitou-se que pudesse existir simultaneamente uma contaminação do solo por elementos metálicos (sais e óxidos). Por este motivo, foi efectuada recolha controlada de amostras de solos em 10 localizações da área estudada a duas e/ou três profundidades, em Agosto de 2010, que foram tratadas e analisadas em laboratório para determinação de diferentes parâmetros. We evaluated coenzyme Q₁₀ (CoQ) levels in patients studied under suspicion of mitochondrial DNA depletion syndromes (MDS) (n=39). CoQ levels were quantified by HPLC, and the percentage of mtDNA depletion by quantitative real-time PCR. A high percentage of MDS patients presented with CoQ deficiency as compared to other mitochondrial patients (Mann-Whitney-U test: p=0.001). Our findings suggest that MDS are frequently associated with CoQ deficiency, as a possible secondary consequence of disease pathophysiology. Assessment of muscle CoQ status seems advisable in MDS patients since the possibility of CoQ supplementation may then be considered as a candidate therapy.

Os produtos naturais são uma importante fonte de possíveis novos fármacos para uso clínico. O Plectranthus ornatus Codd. pertence a um género associado ao isolamento de diterpenos que são compostos responsáveis por diversas actividades biológicas. Os três diterpenos em estudo foram isolados no passado de P. ornatus e são agora avaliados como potenciais inibidores da COX-1. Os resultados obtidos sugerem que o ácido rinocerotinoico (2), mas não a plectrornatina C (1) e o halimano (3), apresenta uma ligeira actividade inibidora da COX-1. Estudos em desenvolvimento visam entender se estes compostos têm efeito como inibidores da COX-2. Deste modo, pretende-se verificar o seu possível interesse como agentes anti-inflamatórios., Natural products are a rich source of drug candidates for clinical use. The Plectranthus ornatus Codd. belongs to a genus associated to the isolation of diterpenoids which are responsible for various biological activities. The three diterpenoids under study were isolated in the past from P. ornatus and are now being evaluated as potential COX-1 inhibitors. Obtained results suggest that rhinocerotinoic acid (2), but not halimane (3) and plectrornatin C (1), has a mild COX-1 inhibitory activity. Current studies are being carried out to understand if these compounds have effect as COX-2 inhibitors. This will contribute to establish their possible interest as anti-inflammatory agents.

This study aimed to evaluate the physicochemical characteristics, texture and color parameters of the artisanal Butter cheese from Marajó, manufactured with partial substitution of buffalo milk for cow milk. Four formulations were elaborated: B100 (100% buffalo milk); B80 (80% buffalo milk + 20% cow milk); B70 (70% buffalo milk + 30% cow milk) and B60 (60% buffalo milk + 40% cow milk). Three replicates were performed. The partial substitution of 20%, 30% and 40% of buffalo milk caused the reduction of fat in 16.2%, 21.6% and 25.4%, and protein in 5.2%, 5.7%, and 6%, respectively, with decrease of elasticity, cohesiveness, gumminess and chewiness, but had no influence on the hardness. Moisture had significant and strongly negative correlation with elasticity, cohesiveness, gumminess and chewiness. Fat and protein had significant and strongly positive correlations with elasticity, cohesiveness, gumminess and chewiness. Significant differences were found for color variables L*, a*, b* and ho. The increase in cow milk concentration increased the yellowgreenish tonality, with an emphasis in yellow tones.
