A collision of a light meson and a charmonium produces quarks and antiquarks first, then the charm quark fragments into a charmed hadron, and finally three or more mesons are produced. This is the mechanism that we consider and propose to understand the prompt-J/psi nuclear modification factor in the range of J/psi transverse momentum from 10 GeV/c to 18 GeV/c, as measured by the CMS Collaboration and the ATLAS Collaboration. Unpolarized cross sections are derived and calculated for the reactions pion+charmonium ->H_c+X with H_c being a charmed meson. Numerical cross sections are parametrized and used to calculate the dissociation rate of charmonium in the interaction with pions in hadronic matter. The momentum dependence of the rate obtained is so as to lead to a decreasing charmonium nuclear modification factor with increasing transverse momentum., Comment: 30 pages, LaTex; 1 added figure and table

Plastic scintillation detectors for Time-of-Flight (TOF) measurements are almost essential for event-by-event identification of relativistic rare isotopes. In this work, a pair of plastic scintillation detectors of 50 $\times$ 50 $\times$ 3$^{t}$ mm$^3$ and 80 $\times$ 100 $\times$ 3$^{t}$ mm$^3$ have been set up at the external target facility (ETF), Institute of Modern Physics. Their time, energy and position responses are measured with $^{18}$O primary beam at 400 MeV/nucleon. After the off-line walk-effect and position corrections, the time resolution of the two detectors are determined to be 27 ps ($\sigma$) and 36 ps ($\sigma$), respectively. Both detectors have nearly the same energy resolution of 3$\%$ ($\sigma$) and position resolution of 2 mm ($\sigma$). The detectors have been used successfully in nuclear reaction cross section measurements, and will be be employed for upgrading RIBLL2 beam line at IMP as well as for the high energy branch at HIAF., Comment: 6 pages, 11 figures

The phi-charmonium dissociation reactions in hadronic matter are studied. Unpolarised cross sections for 12 reactions are calculated in the Born approximation, in the quark-interchange mechanism and with a temperature-dependent quark potential. The potential leads to remarkable temperature dependence of the cross sections. With the cross sections and the phi distribution function we calculate the dissociation rates of the charmonia in the interactions with the phi meson in hadronic matter. The dependence of the rates on temperature and charmonium momentum is meaningful to the influence of phi mesons on charmonium suppression., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures

K*-charmonium dissociation reactions in hadronic matter are studied in the Born approximation, in the quark-interchange mechanism, and with a temperature-dependent quark potential. We obtain the temperature dependence of unpolarized cross sections for K*-charmonium dissociation reactions which produce charmed mesons and charmed strange mesons. We use the cross sections for charmonium dissociation in collisions with pion, rho meson, kaon, vector kaon, and eta meson to calculate dissociation rates of charmonium with the five types of mesons. Because of the temperature dependence of the meson masses, dissociation cross sections, and meson distribution functions, the charmonium dissociation rates generally increase with the increase of temperature and decrease with the increase of charmonium momentum from 2.2 GeV/c. We find that the first derivative of the dissociation rate with respect to the charmonium momentum is zero when the charmonium is at rest. While the eta + psi' and eta + chi_c dissociation reactions can be neglected, the J/psi, psi', and chi_c dissociation are caused by the collisions with pion, rho meson, kaon, vector kaon, and eta meson., Comment: 58 pages, 30 figures, 4 tables

The current proposals for producing non-Abelian anyons and Majorana particles, which are neither fermions nor bosons, are primarily based on the realization of topological superconductivity in two dimensions. We show theoretically that the unique Landau level structure of bilayer graphene provides a new possible avenue for achieving such exotic particles. Specifically, we demonstrate the feasibility of a "parton" fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state, which supports non-Abelian particles without the usual topological superconductivity. Furthermore, we advance this state as the fundamental explanation of the puzzling $1/2$ FQH effect observed in bilayer graphene [Kim {\em et al.}, Nano Lett. {\bf 15}, 7445 (2015)], and predict that it will also occur in trilayer graphene. We indicate experimental signatures that differentiate the parton state from other candidate non-Abelian FQH states and predict that a transverse electric field can induce a topological quantum phase transition between two distinct non-Abelian FQH states., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

The formation of bound states involving multiple particles underlies many interesting quantum physical phenomena, such as Efimov physics or superconductivity. In this work we show the existence of an infinite number of such states for some boson impurity models. They describe free bosons coupled to an impurity and include some of the most representative models in quantum optics. We also propose a family of wavefunctions to describe the bound states and verify that it accurately characterizes all parameter regimes by comparing its predictions with exact numerical calculations for a one-dimensional tight-binding Hamiltonian. For that model, we also analyze the nature of the bound states by studying the scaling relations of physical quantities such as the ground state energy and localization length, and find a non-analytical behavior as a function of the coupling strength. Finally, we discuss how to test our theoretical predictions in experimental platforms such as photonic crystal structures and cold atoms in optical lattices., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

The development, characterization and control of $N$-photon sources are instrumental for quantum technological applications. This work constitutes a step forward in this direction, where we propose a cavity quantum electrodynamics setup designed for the generation of photon pairs. We analyze it both via the scattering and master equation formalisms. From the connection between these two frameworks it naturally arises a physical criterion characterizing when weakly-driven systems behave as continuous antibunched two-photon sources. We find the optimal parameters for which our setup works as an efficient photon-pair source, showing also that it becomes a deterministic down-converter of single photons. We provide a specific implementation based on state-of-the-art superconducting circuits, showing how our proposal is within the reach of current technologies., Comment: 14 pages with 6 figures

A 760 $\times$ 760 $\times$ 30 mm$^3$ plastic scintillation detector viewed by photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) from four corners has been developed, and the detector has been tested with cosmic rays and $\gamma$ rays. A position-independent effective time T$_{eff}$ has been found, indicating this detector can be used as a TOF detector. The hit position can also be reconstructed by the time from four corners. A TOF resolution of 236 ps and a position resolution of 48 mm have been achieved, and the detection efficiency has also been investigated., Comment: 5 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Chinese Physics C

We study bosonic atoms with two internal states in artificial gauge potentials whose strengths are different for the two components. A series of topological phases for such systems is proposed using the composite fermion theory and the parton construction. It is found in exact diagonalization that some of the proposed states may be realized for simple contact interaction between bosons. The ground states and low-energy excitations of these states are modeled using trial wave functions. The effective field theories for these states are also constructed and reveal some interesting properties., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

We develop a scattering theory to investigate the multi-photon transmission in a one-dimensional waveguide in the presence of quantum emitters. It is based on a path integral formalism, uses displacement transformations, and does not require the Markov approximation. We obtain the full time-evolution of the global system, including the emitters and the photonic field. Our theory allows us to compute the transition amplitude between arbitrary initial and final states, as well as the S-matrix of the asymptotic in- and out- states. For the case of few incident photons in the waveguide, we also re-derive a generalized master equation in the Markov limit. We compare the predictions of the developed scattering theory and that with the Markov approximation. We illustrate our methods with five examples of few-photon scattering: (i) by a two-level emitter, (ii) in the Jaynes-Cummings model; (iii) by an array of two-level emitters; (iv) by a two-level emitter in the half-end waveguide; (v) by an array of atoms coupled to Rydberg levels. In the first two, we show the application of the scattering theory in the photon scattering by a single emitter, and examine the correctness of our theory with the well-known results. In the third example, we analyze the condition of the Markov approximation for the photon scattering in the array of emitters. In the forth one, we show how a quantum emitter can generate entanglement of out-going photons. Finally, we highlight the interplay between the phenomenon of electromagnetic-induced transparency and the Rydberg interaction, and show how this results in a rich variety of possibilities in the quantum statistics of the scattering photons., Comment: 21 pages,10 figures

We study kaon-charmonium and eta-charmonium dissociation reactions. The K-charmonium dissociation and the eta-charmonium dissociation include 27 reactions. Cross sections for the reactions are calculated in the Born approximation, in the quark-interchange mechanism and with a temperature-dependent quark potential. The temperature dependence of peak cross sections of endothermic reactions is linked to the temperature dependence of quark-antiquark relative-motion wave functions, meson masses and the quark potential. Although the eta meson and kaon have similar masses, the energy and temperature dependence of the eta-charmonium dissociation cross sections are quite different from those of the K-charmonium dissociation cross sections. Using the eta-charmonium and pion-charmonium dissociation cross sections, we calculate the ratio of the corresponding dissociation rates in hadronic matter and we find that such rates are comparable at low J/psi momenta., Comment: 54 pages, 29 figures, 6 tables

There has been rapid development of systems that yield strong interactions between freely propagating photons in one dimension via controlled coupling to quantum emitters. This raises interesting possibilities such as quantum information processing with photons or quantum many-body states of light, but treating such systems generally remains a difficult task theoretically. Here, we describe a novel technique in which the dynamics and correlations of a few photons can be exactly calculated, based upon knowledge of the initial photonic state and the solution of the reduced effective dynamics of the quantum emitters alone. We show that this generalized "input-output" formalism allows for a straightforward numerical implementation regardless of system details, such as emitter positions, external driving, and level structure. As a specific example, we apply our technique to show how atomic systems with infinite-range interactions and under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency enable the selective transmission of correlated multi-photon states.

In this article, we review and compare a number of methods of spatial prediction. To demonstrate the breadth of available choices, we consider both traditional and more-recently-introduced spatial predictors. Specifically, in our exposition we review: traditional stationary kriging, smoothing splines, negative-exponential distance-weighting, Fixed Rank Kriging, modified predictive processes, a stochastic partial differential equation approach, and lattice kriging. This comparison is meant to provide a service to practitioners wishing to decide between spatial predictors. Hence, we provide technical material for the unfamiliar, which includes the definition and motivation for each (deterministic and stochastic) spatial predictor. We use a benchmark dataset of $\mathrm{CO}_{2}$ data from NASA's AIRS instrument to address computational efficiencies that include CPU time and memory usage. Furthermore, the predictive performance of each spatial predictor is assessed empirically using a hold-out subset of the AIRS data.
