A measurement of $\Lambda_c^+$ production in neutrino nucleon charged-current interactions is presented. In a sub-sample of about 50 000 interactions located in the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector exposed to the wide band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS, candidates for decays of short lived particles were identified using new automatic scanning systems and later confirmed through visual inspection. Criteria based on the flight length allowed a statistical separation among the different charm species thus enabling a sample particularly rich in $\Lambda_c^+$ to be defined. At an average neutrino energy of $27$ \GeV, the product ${\sigma(\Lambda_c^+)}/{\sigma(CC)} \times BR(\Lambda_c^+ \rightarrow 3p) $ was measured to be $(0.37 \pm 0.10(stat) \pm 0.02(syst) ) \times 10^{-2}$, while the values of $(1.54\pm0.35(stat)\pm0.18(syst) ) \times 10^{-2} $ and of $0.24 \pm 0.07(stat) \pm 0.04(syst)$ were obtained for ${\sigma(\Lambda_c^+)}/{\sigma(CC)}$ and $BR(\Lambda_c^+ \rightarrow 3p)$ respectively.

In the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) 1990 Recommendations, radiation weighting factors were introduced in the place of quality factors, the tissue weighting factors were revised, and effective doses and equivalent doses of each tissues and organs were defined as the protection quantities. Dose conversion coefficients for photons, electrons and neutrons based on new ICRP recommendations were cited in the ICRP Publication 74, but the energy ranges of theses data were limited and there are no data for high energy radiations produced in accelerator facilities. For the purpose of designing the high intensity proton accelerator facilities at JAERI, the dose evaluation code system of high energy radiations based on the HERMES code was developed and the dose conversion coefficients of effective dose were evaluated for photons, neutrons and protons up to 10 GeV, and electrons up to 100 GeV. The dose conversion coefficients of effective dose equivalent were also evaluated using quality factors to consider the consistency between radiation weighting factors and Q-L relationship. The effective dose conversion coefficients obtained in this work were in good agreement with those recently evaluated by using FLUKA code for photons and electrons with all energies, and neutrons and protons below 500 MeV. There were some discrepancy between two data owing to the difference of cross sections in the nuclear reaction models. In order to evaluate the dose conversion coefficients of neutrons and protons up to 100 GeV, it is necessary that the nuclear models of hadron cascade should be revised. The dose conversion coefficients of effective dose equivalents for high energy radiations based on Q-L relation in ICRP Publication 60 were evaluated only in this work. The previous comparison between effective dose and effective dose equivalent made it clear that the radiation weighting factors for high energy neutrons and protons were overestimated and the modificat

- Abstract
In spring 2012 CERN provided two weeks of a short bunch proton beam dedicated to the neutrino velocity measurement over a distance of 730 km. The OPERA neutrino experiment at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory used an upgraded setup compared to the 2011 measurements, improving the measurement time accuracy. An independent timing system based on the Resistive Plate Chambers was exploited providing a time accuracy of similar to 1 ns. Neutrino and anti-neutrino contribution were separated using the information provided by the OPERA magnetic spectrometers. The new analysis profited from the precision geodesy measurements of the neutrino beaseline and of the CNGS/LNGS clock synchronization. The neutrino arrival time with respect to the one computed assuming the speed of light in vacuum is found to be delta t(nu) equivalent to TOFc - TOF nu = (0.6 +/- 0.4 (stat.)+/- 3.0 (syst.)) and delta t((nu) over bar) equivalent to TOFc-TOF(nu) over bar = (1.7 +/- 1.4 (stat.)+/- 3.1 (syst.)) ns for nu(mu) and (nu) over bar (mu), respectively. This corresponds to a limit on the muon neutrino velocity with respect to the speed of light of -1.8 x 10(-6) < (V-nu - c)/c < 2.3 x 10(-6) at 90% C.L. This new measurement confirms with higher accuracy the revised OPERA result

Physics::Instrumentation and Detectors - Abstract
The DONUT experiment used an emulsion/counter-hybrid-detector, which succeeded in detecting tau-neutrino charged-current interactions. A new method of emulsion analysis, NETSCAN, was used to locate neutrino events and detect tau decays. It is based on a fully automated emulsion readout system (Ultra Track Selector) developed at Nagoya University. The achieved plate-to-plate alignment accuracy of ∼0.2 μm over an area of 2.6 mm×2.6 mm permitted an efficient and systematic tau decay search using emulsion data. Moreover, this accuracy allowed measurement of particle momenta by multiple Coulomb scattering, and contributed to the efficient background rejection for the ν τ candidates. This paper describes details of our emulsion analysis methods. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

océano Atlántico sur ,esfuerzo del viento ,Transporte de masa de Sverdrup - Abstract
Monthly mean values of Hellerman and Rosenstein (HR) wind stress and eight oceanographic transects of the South Atlantic Ocean obtained at different latitudes were used to test the Sverdrup relationship. Seasonal mean wind-stress charts for each season are presented. The zonal migration and splitting of the South Atlantic atmospheric high-pressure centre can be observed, as well as other seasonal changes of the wind field. Charts of the mean wind stress curl show a line of zero curl sloping northeastward across the South Atlantic basin, with negative values north of this line and positive values south of it. The annual mean chart of the Sverdrup mass transport show the same feature, with northward transport below this line and southward transport above it. Zonal values of Sverdrup (S), Geostrophic (G), and Ekman (E) transports, as well as the total transport (R = G + E), were calculated. There is no established relationship between the Sverdrup and total transport with latitude. Within the calculated interval of error (± 1.2 Sv for G and ± 2.3 Sv for S), a good qualitative agreement between R and S was attained at 9°, 11°, 16° and 24° S. The Brazil Current geostrophic transports, at different latitudes, are close to the Sverdrup transport values at the western boundary. However, the poleward increase of the Brazil Current transport with latitude is not presented by the Sverdrup transport.

- Abstract
Using a neutrino beam in which a ν τ component was identified for the first time, the ν τ magnetic moment was measured based on a search for an anomalous increase in the number of neutrino-electron interactions. One such event was observed when 2.3 were expected from background processes, giving an upper 90% confidence limit on μ ντ of 3.9 × 10 -7μ B. ©2001 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

- Abstract
A new method of momentum measurement of charged particles through multiple Coulomb scattering (MCS) in the OPERA lead-emulsion target is presented. It is based on precise measurements of track angular deviations carried out thanks to the very high resolution of nuclear emulsions. The algorithm has been tested with Monte Carlo pions. The results are found to describe within the expected uncertainties the data obtained from test beams. We also present a comparison of muon momenta evaluated through MCS in the OPERA lead-emulsion target with those determined by the electronic detectors for neutrino-charged current interaction events. The two independent measurements agree within the experimental uncertainties, and the results validate the algorithm developed for the emulsion detector of OPERA. © IOP Publishing Ltd and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft.

- Abstract
The OPERA neutrino experiment at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory has measured the velocity of neutrinos from the CERN CNGS beam over a baseline of about 730 km. The measurement is based on data taken by OPERA in the years 2009, 2010 and 2011. Dedicated upgrades of the CNGS timing system and of the OPERA detector, as well as a high precision geodesy campaign for the measurement of the neutrino baseline, allowed reaching comparable systematic and statistical accuracies. An arrival time of CNGS muon neutrinos with respect to the one computed assuming the speed of light in vacuum of (6.5 +/- 7.4(stat.)((+8.3)(-8.0)sys.))ns was measured corresponding to a relative difference of the muon neutrino velocity with respect to the speed of light (v-c)/c =(2.7 +/-3.1(stat.)((+3.4)(-3.3)(sys.))x10^(-6). The above result, obtained by comparing the time distributions of neutrino interactions and of protons hitting the CNGS target in 10.5 microseconds long extractions, was confirmed by a test performed at the end of 2011 using a short bunch beam allowing to measure the neutrino time of flight at the single interaction level., Comment: 34 pages, 22 figures This version replaces all previous ones

- Abstract
The nuclear emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS of 27 GeV average neutrino energy from 1994 to 1997. In total about 100000 charged-current neutrino interactions with at least one identified muon were located in the emulsion target and fully reconstructed, using newly developed automated scanning systems. Charmed particles were searched for by a program recognizing particle decays. The observation of the decay in nuclear emulsion makes it possible to select a sample with very low background and minimal kinematical bias. 2013 charged-current interactions with a charmed hadron candidate in the final state were selected and confirmed through visual inspection. The charm production rate induced by neutrinos relative to the charged-current cross-section is measured to be sigma(nu_mu N -> mu- C X)/sigma(CC) = (5.75 +-0.32 stat +-0.30 syst)%. The charm production cross-section as a function of the neutrino energy is also obtained. The results are in good agreement with previous measurements. The charm-quark hadronization produces the following charmed hadrons with relative fractions (in %): f_Dzero = 43.7+-4.5, f_Lambda_c^plus = 19.2+-4.2, f_Dplus = 25.3+-4.2, and f_D_splus = 11.8+-4.7., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

- Abstract
In this study, we are doing R&D for directional dark matter search with nuclear emulsion. First of all, higher resolution nuclear emulsion with fine silver halide crystals was developed in the production facility of emulsion at Nagoya university, and we confirmed that it can detect the expected nuclear recoil tracks. The readout of submicron tracks was required the new technology. We developed the expansion technique, and could readout the signal by shape analysis with optical microscopy. The two dimensional angular resolution is 36 degrees at the original track length of range from 150nm to 200nm with optical microscopy. Finally we demonstrated by using recoiled nuclei induced by 14.8MeV neutron, and confirmed the technique. Moreover, we developed the X-ray microscope system with SPring-8 as final check with higher resolution of selected candidate tracks with optical microscopy. The angular resolution was improved from 31 degrees with optical microscopy to 17degrees with X-ray microscopy at the track length of range from 150nm to 250nm. We are developing the practical system and planning for start of the test running with prototype detector., Comment: Proceedings of the 3rd International conference on Directional Detection of Dark Matter (CYGNUS 2011), Aussois, France, 8-10 June 2011

- Abstract
The OPERA experiment is based on a hybrid technology combining electronic detectors (EDs) and nuclear emulsions. OPERA collected muon-neutrino interactions during the 2008 and 2009 physics runs of the CNGS neutrino beam, produced at CERN with an energy range of about 5-35 GeV. A total of 5.3 × 1019 protons on target equivalent luminosity have been analysed with the OPERA EDs: scintillator strips target trackers and magnetic muon spectrometers equipped with resistive plate gas chambers and drift tubes, allowing a detailed reconstruction of muon-neutrino interactions. Charged current (CC) and neutral current (NC) interactions are identified, using the measurements in the EDs, and the NC/CC ratio is computed. The momentum distribution and the charge of the muon tracks produced in CC interactions are analysed. Calorimetric measurements of the visible energy are performed for both the CC and NC samples. For CC events, the Bjorken-y distribution and the hadronic shower profile are computed. The results are compared with a detailed Monte Carlo simulation of the response of EDs. © IOP Publishing Ltd and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft.

- Abstract
The OPERA detector at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory (LNGS) was used to measure the atmospheric muon charge ratio in the TeV energy region. We analyzed 403069 atmospheric muons corresponding to 113.4 days of livetime during the 2008 CNGS run. We computed separately the muon charge ratio for single and for multiple muon events in order to select different energy regions of the primary cosmic ray spectrum and to test the charge ratio dependence on the primary composition. The measured charge ratio values were corrected taking into account the charge-misidentification errors. Data have also been grouped in five bins of the "vertical surface energy". A fit to a simplified model of muon production in the atmosphere allowed the determination of the pion and kaon charge ratios weighted by the cosmic ray energy spectrum., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures

We present the case for a dark matter detector with directional sensitivity. This document was developed at the 2009 CYGNUS workshop on directional dark matter detection, and contains contributions from theorists and experimental groups in the field. We describe the need for a dark matter detector with directional sensitivity; each directional dark matter experiment presents their project's status; and we close with a feasibility study for scaling up to a one ton directional detector, which would cost around $150M., Comment: 48 pages, 37 figures, whitepaper on direct dark matter detection with directional sensitivity

- Abstract
This report summarises the conclusions from the detector group of the International Scoping Study of a future Neutrino Factory and Super-Beam neutrino facility. The baseline detector options for each possible neutrino beam are defined as follows: 1. A very massive (Megaton) water Cherenkov detector is the baseline option for a sub-GeV Beta Beam and Super Beam facility. 2. There are a number of possibilities for either a Beta Beam or Super Beam (SB) medium energy facility between 1-5 GeV. These include a totally active scintillating detector (TASD), a liquid argon TPC or a water Cherenkov detector. 3. A 100 kton magnetized iron neutrino detector (MIND) is the baseline to detect the wrong sign muon final states (golden channel) at a high energy (20-50 GeV) neutrino factory from muon decay. A 10 kton hybrid neutrino magnetic emulsion cloud chamber detector for wrong sign tau detection (silver channel) is a possible complement to MIND, if one needs to resolve degeneracies that appear in the delta-theta(13) parameter space.

We report on the first direct observation of a neutrino induced charged-current interaction with two subsequent decays of short-lived particles close to the interaction vertex. This rare double- kink signature in the CHORUS emulsion target is interpreted as a $D_s^{*+}$ production followed by the decay chain $D_s^{*+} \rightarrow D_s^+ \gamma, D_s^+ \rightarrow \tau^+ \nu_\tau ,$ \linebr eak $\tau^+\rightarrow \mu^+\nu_\mu\bar{\nu_\tau}$. The event is characterised by small $Q^2$ and small four-momentum transfer squared $t$ to the target nucleon, which indicates a diffractive pr oduction mechanism. A complete analysis of the event is presented.

Part of the neutrino events collected in 1994-1995 by the CHORUS experiment has been analysed. A search was performed for $\nu_{\tau}$ charged current interactions followed by the $\tau$ lepton deca y into a single charged negative hadron, a possible indication for $\numtonut$ oscillation. A sample of 6,844 events without an identified muon has been located in the emulsion target. Within the s election criteria, no $\tau^-$ candidate has been found. Combining this result with the one from the search for $\nu_\tau$ interactions using the muonic decay mode (36,182 events with an identified muon), a 90\% C.L. limit on the mixing angle $\sin2t < 1.8\cdot 10^{-3}$ (at large $\Delta m^2$) has been derived.

CHORUS is an experiment searching for $\numtonut$ oscillation in the CERN wide band neutrino beam with a {\sl hybrid} setup consisting of a nuclear emulsion target followed by electronic detectors. The experiment has been taking data from 1994 through 1997. A subset of the neutrino interactions collected in 1994 and 1995 have been analyzed, looking for $\nu_\tau$ charged current interactions where the $\tau$ lepton decays to $\mu \bar{\nu}_\mu\nu_\tau$. In a sample of 31,423 $\num$ charged current interactions, no $\nu_\tau$ candidates were found. For large $\dm2$ values, a limit on the mixing angle of $\sin2t < 3.5 \times 10^{-3}$ at $90\%$ C.L. can be set, thus improving the previous best result.

A new experimental apparatus, designed principally for a high sensitivity search for $\nu_{\mu}~\rightarrow~\nu_{\tau}$ oscillation, has been successfully constructed and made operational by the CHORUS Collaboration for the CERN-WA95 experiment. It consists of a large emulsion target, a scintillating fiber tracker system with optoelectronics read-out, an air-core magnet, a set of trigger hodoscopes, a calorimeter based on the lead/scintillating-fiber technique, and a muon spectrometer. The design, construction and performance of the entire apparatus and of the different detectors are described.

- Abstract
The OPERA neutrino detector at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) was designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in appearance mode, through the study of nu_mu --> nu_tau oscillations. The apparatus consists of a lead/emulsion-film target complemented by electronic detectors. It is placed in the high-energy, long-baseline CERN to LNGS beam (CNGS) 730 km away from the neutrino source. In August 2006, a first run with CNGS neutrinos was successfully conducted. A first sample of neutrino events was collected, statistically consistent with the integrated beam intensity. After a brief description of the beam and of the various sub-detectors, we report on the achievement of this milestone, presenting the first data and some analysis results.
