Search

The correlation between baryon number and strangeness elucidates the nature of strongly interacting matter. This diagnostic can be extracted theoretically from lattice QCD calculations and experimentally from event-by-event fluctuations. The analysis of present lattice results above the critical temperature severely limits the presence of bound states, thus supporting a picture of independent (quasi)quarks. Photofission experiments were performed on targets of 232Th, 233,235,238U, 237Np, and 239,240pu using nearly 100% linearly polarized, high intensity (~5 x 106γ/s), and nearly-monoenergetic γ-ray beams having energies between 5.3 and 7.6 MeV at the High Intensity γ-ray Source (HlγS) located at Duke University and Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory. An array of 12-18 liquid scintillator detectors was used to measure prompt fission neutron yields parallel and perpendicular to the plane of beam polarization. Polarization asymmetries, the differences between the in-plane and out-of-plane yields divided by their sums, were measured. Asymmetries close to zero were found for 233,235U, 237Np, and 239Pu while significant asymmetries (~0.2-0.5) were found for 232Th, 238U, and 240Pu. Predictions based on previously measured photofission fragment angular distributions combined with a model of prompt neutron emission agree well with the experimental results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The transformation of an atomic nucleus into two excited fission fragments is modeled as a strongly damped evolution of the nuclear shape. As in previous studies, it is assumed that the division of mass and charge is frozen in at a critical neck radius of c 0 = 2.5 fm. In order to also determine the energetics, we follow the system further until scission occurs at a smaller neck radius, at which point the shapes of the proto-fragments are extracted. The statistical energy available at scission is then divided on the basis of the respective microscopic level densities. This approach takes account of important (and energy-dependent) finite-size effects. After the fragments have been fully accelerated and their shapes have relaxed to their equilibrium forms, they undergo sequential neutron evaporation. The dependence of the resulting mean neutron multiplicity on the fragment mass, ν ¯ (A) , including the dependence on the initial excitation energy of the fissioning compound nucleus, agrees reasonably well with observations, as demonstrated here for 235U(n, f), and the sawtooth appearance of ν ¯ (A) can be understood from shell-structure effects in the level densities. Background: Spontaneous fission events emit prompt neutrons correlated with one another in emission angle and energy. Measurements of these correlations can shed light on the partitioning of the excitation energy between the fragments, even if they are not directly measured. Purpose: We explore the relationship in energy and angle between correlated prompt neutrons emitted from 252Cf spontaneous fission. Methods: Measurements with the Chi-Nu array provide experimental data for coincident neutrons tagged with a fission chamber signal with 10∘ angular resolution and 1-ns timing resolution for time-of-flight energy calculations. The experimental results are compared to simulations produced by the fission event generators cgmf, freya, and mcnpx-polimi ipol(1) = 1. Results: We find that the measurements and the simulations all exhibit anisotropic neutron emission, although differences between fission event generators are evident. Conclusions: This work shows that the dependence of detected neutron energy on the energy of another neutron detected in coincidence, although weak, is non-negligible, indicating that there may be correlations in energy between two neutrons emitted in the same fission event. For the first time, the complete neutron multiplicity distribution has been measured from the photofission of 235U induced by high-energy spallation γ rays arriving ahead of the neutron beam at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. The resulting average neutron multiplicity 3.80±0.08 (stat.) neutrons per photofission is in general agreement with previous measurements. In addition, unique measurements of the prompt fission energy spectrum of the neutrons from photofission and the angular correlation of two-neutron energies emitted in photofission also were made. Ultrafine fibers manufactured through electrospinning are a frontrunner for advanced fiber applications, but transitioning from potential to commercial applications for ultrafine fibers requires a better understanding of the behavior of polymer solutions in electrospinning to enable the design of more complex spinning dopes. In complex fluids, there are viscoelastic stresses and microstructural transitions that alter free surface flows. These may not be seen in shear rheology; therefore, an in-depth analysis of the extensional rheological behavior must be performed. In this work, we use dripping-onto-substrate rheometry to characterize the extensional viscosities of electrospinning dopes from four polymer solutions commonly used in electrospinning (low- and high-molecular-weight polyvinylpyrrolidone in methanol and water as well as poly(ethylene oxide) and poly(vinyl alcohol) in water). We link the electrospinnability, characterized through fiber morphology, to the extensional rheological properties for semidilute and entangled polymer solutions and show that high-surface-tension solvents require higher extensional viscosities and relaxation times to form smooth fibers and that the Deborah and Ohnesorge numbers are a promising method of determining electrospinnability. A recent analysis of experimental data [J. Wilson et al., Nature (London) 590, 566 (2021)NATUAS0028-083610.1038/s41586-021-03304-w] found that the angular momenta of nuclear fission fragments are uncorrelated. Based on this finding, the authors concluded that the spins are therefore determined only after scission has occurred. We show here that the nucleon-exchange mechanism, as implemented in the well-established event-by-event fission model freya, while agitating collective rotational modes in which the two spins are highly correlated, nevertheless leads to fragment spins that are largely uncorrelated. This counterexample invalidates the conclusion in [J. Wilson et al.] that uncorrelated spins must necessarily have been generated after scission (a potentious conclusion that would rule out all models that generate the fragment spins prior to scission). Furthermore, it was reported [J. Wilson et al.] that the mass dependence of the average fragment spin has a sawtooth structure. We demonstrate that such a behavior naturally emerges when shell and deformation effects are included in the moments of inertia of the fragments at scission.

Extending a previously developed two-phase equation of state, we simulate head-on relativistic lead-lead collisions with fluid dynamics, augmented with a finite-range term, and study the effects of the phase structure on the evolution of the baryon density. For collision energies that bring the bulk of the system into the mechanically unstable spinodal region of the phase diagram, the density irregularities are being amplified significantly. The resulting density clumping may be exploited as a signal of the phase transition, possibly through an enhanced production of composite particles.

Although nuclear fission can be understood qualitatively as an evolution of the nuclear shape, a quantitative description has proven to be very elusive. In particular, until now, there existed no model with demonstrated predictive power for the fission-fragment mass yields. Exploiting the expected strongly damped character of nuclear dynamics, we treat the nuclear shape evolution in analogy with Brownian motion and perform random walks on five-dimensional fission potential-energy surfaces which were calculated previously and are the most comprehensive available. Test applications give good reproduction of highly variable experimental mass yields. The expansion of strongly interacting matter formed in high-energy nuclear collisions drives the system through the region of phase coexistence. The present study examines the associated spinodal instability and finds that the degree of amplification may be sufficient for the emergence of spinodal patterns that may be utilized as a diagnostic of the hadronization phase transition.
