Astrophysics - Solar and Stellar Astrophysics - Abstract
We have used high-resolution spectroscopy to observe the Kepler-16 eclipsing binary as a double-lined system, and measure precise radial velocities for both stellar components. These velocities yield a dynamical mass-ratio of q=0.2994+-0.0031. When combined with the inclination, i=90.3401+0.0016-0.0019 deg, measured from the Kepler photometric data by Doyle et al. 2011, we derive dynamical masses for the Kepler-16 components of M_A=0.654+-0.017 M_sun and M_B=0.1959+-0.0031 M_sun, a precision of 2.5% and 1.5% respectively. Our results confirm at the ~2% level the mass-ratio derived by Doyle et al. with their photometric-dynamical model, q=0.2937+-0.0006. These are among the most precise spectroscopic dynamical masses ever measured for low-mass stars, and provide an important direct test of the results from the photometric-dynamical modeling technique., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

The Penn State Pathfinder is a prototype warm fiber-fed Echelle spectrograph with a Hawaii-1 NIR detector that has already demonstrated 7-10 m/s radial velocity precision on integrated sunlight. The Pathfinder testbed was initially setup for the Gemini PRVS design study to enable a systematic exploration of the challenges of achieving high radial velocity precision in the near-infrared, as well as to test possible solutions to these calibration challenges. The current version of the Pathfinder has an R3 echelle grating, and delivers a resolution of R~50,000 in the Y, J or H bands of the spectrum. We will discuss the on sky-performance of the Pathfinder during an engineering test run at the Hobby Eberly Telescope as well the results of velocity observations of M dwarfs. We will also discuss the unique calibration techniques we have explored, like Uranium-Neon hollow cathode lamps, notch filter, and modal noise mitigation to enable high precision radial velocity observation in the NIR. The Pathfinder is a prototype testbed precursor of a cooled high-resolution NIR spectrograph capable of high radial velocity precision and of finding low mass planets around mid-late M dwarfs., Comment: To appear in Proc. Astrophysics - Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics - Abstract
We present the first light commissioning results from the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) optical fiber-fed high resolution cross-dispersed Echelle Spectrograph. It is capable of a single- shot spectral coverage of 3700A to 8600A at R ~ 63,000 and is under very stable conditions of temperature (0.04{\deg}C at 23{\deg}C). In the very near future pressure control will also be achieved by enclosing the entire spectrograph in a low-pressure vacuum chamber (~0.01mbar). It is attached to a 1.2m telescope using two 50micron core optical fibers (one for the star and another for simultaneous Th-Ar spectral calibration). The 1.2m telescope is located at Mt. Abu, India, and we are guaranteed about 80 to 100 nights a year for observations with the spectrograph. The instrument will be ultimately used for radial-velocity searches of exoplanets around 1000 dwarf stars, brighter than 10th magnitude, for the next 5 years with a precision of 3 to 5m/s using the simultaneous Th-Ar spectral lamp reference technique. The spectrograph has already achieved a stability of 3.7m/s in short-term time scale and in the near future we expect the stability to be at 1m/s once we install the spectrograph inside the vacuum chamber., Comment: To appear in SPIE Proc. 2010, vol. 7035

Astrophysics - Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics - Abstract
The Habitable Zone Planet Finder (HZPF) is a proposed instrument for the 10m class Hobby Eberly telescope that will be capable of discovering low mass planets around M dwarfs. HZPF will be fiber-fed, provide a spectral resolution R~ 50,000 and cover the wavelength range 0.9-1.65{\mu}m, the Y, J and H NIR bands where most of the flux is emitted by mid-late type M stars, and where most of the radial velocity information is concentrated. Enclosed in a chilled vacuum vessel with active temperature control, fiber scrambling and mechanical agitation, HZPF is designed to achieve a radial velocity precision < 3m/s, with a desire to obtain <1m/s for the brightest targets. This instrument will enable a study of the properties of low mass planets around M dwarfs; discover planets in the habitable zones around these stars, as well serve as an essential radial velocity confirmation tool for astrometric and transit detections around late M dwarfs. Radial velocity observation in the near-infrared (NIR) will also enable a search for close in planets around young active stars, complementing the search space enabled by upcoming high-contrast imaging instruments like GPI, SPHERE and PALM3K. Tests with a prototype Pathfinder instrument have already demonstrated the ability to recover radial velocities at 7-10 m/s precision from integrated sunlight and ~15-20 m/s precision on stellar observations at the HET. These tests have also demonstrated the ability to work in the NIR Y and J bands with an un-cooled instrument. We will also discuss lessons learned about calibration and performance from our tests and how they impact the overall design of the HZPF., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, to appear in Proc. Skin cancer has become more common in recent decades, raising severe concerns about world health. Creating an automated system to distinguish between benign and malignant images is challenging because of the subtle variations in how skin lesions appear. This study introduces Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) system that offers high classification accuracy while maintaining low computing complexity for categorizing skin lesions. The system incorporates a pre-processing stage that uses morphological filtering to remove hair and artefacts. With the least minimum of human interaction, deep learning techniques are employed to separate skin lesions automatically. Image processing methods are currently being utilized to investigate the automated implementation of the prediction criteria for distinguishing between benign and malignant melanoma lesions. Various pre-trained convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with multi-layered (ML-CNN) are under examination for the classification of skin lesions as either benign or malignant. The best performance is achieved when RF, k-NN and XGBoost are combined, according to average 5-fold cross-validation findings. The outcomes also demonstrate that data augmentation works better than acquiring novel images for training and testing purposes. The experiment results show that the suggested diagnostic framework performs better than existing methods when used on actual clinical skin lesions, with accuracy at 97.5%, F1-score at 91.3%, precision at 96.5%, sensitivity at 89.2% and specificity at 96.7%. It also takes 2.6 seconds to complete with the MNIST dataset and accuracy at 98.2%, F1-score at 92.5%, precision at 98.4%, sensitivity at 92.3% and specificity of 97.2% with the ISIC dataset. This indicates that medical professionals can benefit from using the suggested framework to classify various skin lesions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Heavy metals (HMs) in indoor dust are among the most toxic micropollutants and have attracted mainly the attention of researchers in the last three decades concerning the environmental and human health perspectives. Hence, a thorough literature-based bibliometric analysis was inevitably needed to identify the research trend for the prevalence of HMs in indoor environments and their toxicological aspects. Accordingly, exploring publications on the Web of Science Core Collection database to identify the articles published on HM pollution in indoor dust environments revealed several peculiar findings. The review article indicates that the majority of studies conducted in this field are monitoring-based, utilizing "HMs (n = 79) ," "contaminations (n = 49) ," "lead (n = 49)," and "health" as primary keywords in the published articles. Among the countries, China emerged as the most active investigator in this area, followed by the USA, Middle East, Turkey, Korea, and India. Additionally, China has established collaborations with ~150 and >90 countries, respectively, solidifying its leading position in publications. Studies on HM pollution in indoor dust have evolved from initial exposure analyses in the 1990s to encompass bioavailability, bioaccessibility, exposure, risk assessment, speciation, and source apportionment assessments. Metal pollution in residential and commercial areas (schools/offices) primarily originates from in-house sources and vehicle emissions, while industrial areas, driven by anthropogenic activities (e-waste recycling/mining), face metal pollution from different sources. The analysis underscores that studies predominantly focus on risk assessment of significant metals, their bioaccessibility/bioavailability, and source apportionments. This study's exploration of HMs in indoor dust provides explicit content and trends, offering valuable insights for researchers delving into this field. It not only suggests remedial measures but also contributes to the development of forecasting models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
There is a huge demand for storage capabilities in a variety of applications due to the recent explosion of emerging memory technologies. Memory components based on gel materials show promise as future non-volatile storage architecture designs. Supramolecular gels represent as a “smart” material which is used in many fields such as sensor, nanoelectronics, logic gate, memory device, cosmetics and environmental remediation. These gels are formed through the combination of hydrogels and supramolecular chemistry. Here, we have successfully synthesized Mg(II)-ion-based supramolecular metallohydrogel using pentaethylenehexamine (i.e.Mg@PEH) as a low molecular weight gelator in aqueous medium under ambient conditions. FESEM and TEM images are used to explore the rectangular pebble-like hierarchical network of Mg@PEH metallohydrogel. From elemental mapping through EDX analysis we can confirm the presence of primary chemical constituents in the metallohydrogel. FT-IR spectroscopy provided insights into the possible formation strategy of the metallohydrogel. In this work, we have fabricated Mg(II)-ion-based supramolecular metallohydrogel (i.e.Mg@PEH)-based planner device in a lateral metal-semiconductor-metal configuration to explore its charge transport behaviour. Furthermore, using this Mg@PEH-based metallogel we created a resistive random access memory (RRAM) device that demonstrated bipolar resistive switching behaviour at room temperature. We have also observed their switching behavior at different low temperatures from 100 to 200K. To learn more about the resistive switching process, we investigated the switching mechanism, which involves formation and rupture of conduction filaments. Mg@PEH-based RRAM device showed an excellent endurance over 1000 switching cycles and good performance with a high ON/OFF ratio of roughly 100. This RRAM device has good endurance, which allows them to withstand a large range of read and write cycles without experiencing a noticeable loss in functionality. Here, we have also prepared 2 × 2 Mg@PEH-based crossbar device and observed how it can perform as a logic gate circuit which can be useful for neuromorphic and in-memory computing etc. The robust switching characteristics suggest the possible use of such devices for the design of eco-friendly bioelectronic memory applications. Therefore, metallogel-based RRAM devices are appropriate for important applications in non-volatile memory device, flexible electronics, and optoelectronics devices that demand trustworthy memory solutions since they have demonstrated promising reliability in terms of long-term performance and stability. Nanotechnology has the ability to manipulate matter at the nanoscale and can revolutionize various fields such as medicine, energy, electronics, and materials science by enabling the development of new novel materials, devices, and technologies with unique properties and functionalities. This research paper describes an eco-friendly method of synthesizing silver-copper oxide bimetallic nanoparticles using domestic/industrial waste of orange (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck) peels extract that act as the reducing and stabilising agents. The nanoparticles were successfully synthesized and characterized using various techniques such as UV–Vis spectroscopy, Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy—FTIR, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy—EDX, X-ray diffraction—XRD, and field emission scanning electron microscopy—FESEM. Further synthesised bimetallic nanoparticles were used to evaluate the antibacterial, antioxidant and catalytic activity. Results exhibited enhanced antioxidant activity, dye degradation of methyl red, phenol red, and eosin yellow, and antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, and Klebsiella pneumonia. Ag–CuO bimetallic nanoparticles displayed a higher scavenging activity of 63.87% at 500 µg/ml. Maximum amount of degradation was obtained in case of phenol red dye i.e., 88.4% and in 30 min. Bacillus subtilis showed the highest zone of inhibition (18 mm) at 200 µl/ml of nanoparticles concertation. Therefore, Ag–CuO bimetallic nanoparticles synthesised from the orange peels might serve as a novel antioxidant, antibacterial and catalytic agent in the treatment of wastewater contaminated with dyes. BRII recipient: Roy (hybrid) - Abstract
On September 19, 2008, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, Switzerland, began the world’s highest energy experiments as a probe into the structure of matter and forces of nature. Just nine days after the gala start-up, an explosion occurred in the LHC tunnel that brought the epic collider to a complete standstill. In light of the catastrophic incident that disrupted the operation of the LHC, the paper investigates the relation of temporality to the cycle of work in science, and raises the question: What kind of methodological value should we ascribe to events such as crises or breakdowns? Drawing upon and integrating classical anthropological themes with two and a half years of fieldwork at the LHC particle accelerator complex, the paper explores how the incident in September, which affected the instrument, acquaints us with the distribution of work in the laboratory. The incident discloses that the organization of science is not a homogenous ensemble, but marked by an enormous diversity of tasks and personnel, at the heart of which lies the opposition of theory and practice, or pure and applied. This opposition not only forms the source and sanction of the intricate division of labor found in high-energy physics, but also provides a satisfactory answer to every question involving the interface of experimental science and engineering skill.

- Abstract
Dust is the most pervasive material affecting human health. Metal exposure to humans from dust is best assessed by bioaccessibility tests, which can be done by mimicking the conditions in the human digestive system. This review covers the works on metal bioaccessibility in dust and soil. Here, articles discussing research in this field and their bibliometric outputs have been reviewed. The Web of Science Core Collection Database was explored to collect the data, and bibliometric network analysis was performed using VOSviewer software. Research articles have broadly covered bioaccessibility and risks in urban/coking/smelting/mining plants, waste recycling, transport in vegetables, size distribution, chemical forms, daily intake, speciation, and the influence of matrix composition particle size, and source characterization. The different methods adopted for metal extraction studies have been discussed. Few of the significant findings were: the highest number of publications were observed in the year 2014; soil is the most studied matrix; China has maximum publications; metal immobilization is a vital technique to control metal leaching in the environment and manage metal exposures to humans. The most critical knowledge gaps identified are the standardization of metal extraction procedures and the formulation of realistic models for estimating metal exposure and their bioaccessibility. None of the studies have reported metal bioaccessibility from the perspective of non-invasive human bio monitors like hair or nail. More solution-oriented research would be required to curb the consequences of higher metal bioaccessibility, especially in the vulnerable classes (children/aged/ailing individuals). Further, the paper discusses different control measures, like dust wetting or metal immobilization.
