318. High-Level Coupled-Cluster Study on Substituent Effects in H2Activation by Low-Valent Aluminyl Anions

Abstract

The synthesis of novel aluminyl anion complexes has been well exploited in recent years. Moreover, the elucidation of the structure and reactivity of these complexes opens the path toward a new understanding of low-valent aluminum complexes and their chemistry. This work computationally treats the substituent effect on aluminyl anions to discover suitable alternatives for H2activation at a high level of theory utilizing coupled-cluster techniques extrapolated to the complete basis set. The results reveal that the simplest AlH2–system is the most reactive toward the activation of H2, but due to the low steric demand, severe difficulty in the stabilization of this system makes its use nonviable. However, the results indicate that, in principle, aluminyl systems with −C, −CN, −NC, and −N chelating centers would be the best choices of ligand toward the activation of molecular hydrogen by taking care of suitable steric demand to prevent dimerization of the catalysts. Furthermore, computations show that monosubstitution (besides −H) in aluminyl anions is preferred over disubstitution. So our predictions show that bidentate ligands may yield less reactive aluminyl anions to activate H2than monodentate ones.

319. Above the Clavicle: A Simplified Screening Method for Asymptomatic Blunt Cerebral Vascular Injury

Abstract

Introduction Blunt cerebrovascular injury (BCVI) is an increasingly detected pattern in trauma with significant morbidity, putting patients at risk for subsequent stoke. Complex screening protocols exist to determine who should undergo CT angiography of the neck (CTAN) to evaluate for BCVI. Once identified, stroke incidence may be reduced with appropriate treatment across grades. We hypothesize that an expanded and simplified method for identifying patients with clinical suspicion for BCVI based upon injury above the clavicle (ATC) will illustrate a previously undiagnosed cohort of patients.Methods A single-institution retrospective review of adult (age ≥18 years) blunt trauma patients with BCVI from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2019 was conducted at a tertiary academic medical center. Patients undergoing CTAN were divided into 2 groups based upon qualification by either the expanded Denver criteria or clinical evidence of any injury ATC.Results A total of 219 patients were diagnosed with BCVI (25 566 blunt trauma admissions, .9% incidence). Seventeen patients (8%) who did not satisfy expanded Denver were diagnosed with BCVI by ATC, most commonly undergoing CTAN due to facial trauma (n = 8). There were no differences in distribution of carotid artery injuries (CAI) and vertebral artery injuries (VAI) in the expanded Denver criteria group compared to the ATC group.Conclusions CTAN for blunt trauma with any injury ATC is an easy-to-use screening tool and may be seamlessly included with initial whole-body imaging.

320. A Social Ecological Approach to Anti-Oppressive Practice Development Among White Midwestern Social Work Students

Abstract

Despite the attention and commitments made toward anti-racist and anti-oppressive practices within social work systems, there is a dearth of research examining student development of such competencies. Using ecological systems theory as an investigative framework, this study examined factors and processes involved in anti-oppressive skills development among White social work students. The psychosocial costs of racism to Whites (PCRW), racial identity development and intergroup contact theories were used to select potential predictive factors and generate hypotheses. An explanatory sequential mixed-methodology was used to address research questions by integrating quantitative and qualitative methodologies throughout data collection and analysis phases of the project. Participants were recruited from Master of Social Work (MSW) programs by targeting institutions within the midwestern United States. The study sample comprised of 186 White MSW students from programs across 18 states. Most participants were female (65%) full-time students (58%) between 18 to 29 years of age (64%). Cluster analysis was used to classify students into White racial affect orientation (PCRW) types characterizing their emotional reactions toward people of color using combinations of measures for White empathy, White guilt, and White fear. The majority of participants aligned with the Insensitive and afraid (30%) or the Fearful guilt (26%) types describing their reactions to people of color and racism with differences observed across gender, ethnicity, program year, and student academic status. Hierarchical linear regression analyses were used to evaluate associations between anti-oppressive competencies and predictive factors across levels of an ecological system. Abstract

High doses of ionizing radiation clearly produce deleterious consequences in humans, including, but not exclusively, cancer induction. At very low radiation doses the situation is much less clear, but the risks of low-dose radiation are of societal importance in relation to issues as varied as screening tests for cancer, the future of nuclear power, occupational radiation exposure, frequent-flyer risks, manned space exploration, and radiological terrorism. We review the difficulties involved in quantifying the risks of low-dose radiation and address two specific questions. First, what is the lowest dose of x- or [gamma]-radiation for which good evidence exists of increased cancer risks in humans? The epidemiological data suggest that it is [approximately equal to] 10-50 mSv for an acute exposure and [approximately equal to] 50-100 mSv for a protracted exposure. Second, what is the most appropriate way to extrapolate such cancer risk estimates to still lower doses? Given that it is supported by experimentally grounded, quantifiable, biophysical arguments, a linear extrapolation of cancer risks from intermediate to very low doses currently appears to be the most appropriate methodology. This linearity assumption is not necessarily the most conservative approach, and it is likely that it will result in an underestimate of some radiation-induced cancer risks and an overestimate of others.

Abstract

FOXP3 is the lineage-defining transcription factor for Tregs, a cell type critical to immune tolerance, but the mechanisms that control FOXP3 expression in Tregs remain incompletely defined, particularly as it relates to signals downstream of TCR and CD28 signaling. Herein, we studied the role of IRF4 and BATF3, two transcription factors upregulated upon T cell activation, to the conversion of conventional CD4+ T cells to FOXP3+ T cells (iTregs) in vitro. We found that IRF4 must partner with BATF3 to bind to a regulatory region in the Foxp3 locus where they cooperatively repress FOXP3 expression and iTreg induction. In addition, we found that interactions of these transcription factors are necessary for glycolytic reprogramming of activated T cells that is antagonistic to FOXP3 expression and stability. As a result, Irf4 KO iTregs show increased demethylation of the critical CNS2 region in the Foxp3 locus. Together, our findings provide important insights how BATF3 and IRF4 interactions integrate activating signals to control CD4+ cell fate decisions and govern Foxp3 expression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
