Abstract Individuals living in areas with high rates of poverty are disproportionately affected by posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Despite this association, little is known about how neighborhood poverty rates impact risk for PTSD development. In the current prospective study, we determined the relationship between neighborhood poverty rate and PTSD symptoms 6‐months after experiencing a traumatic event in a sample of varied race, gender, and socioeconomic status. Participants (N = 252) were enrolled in a hospital emergency department after experiencing a traumatic event. Demographic information (including zip code of residence), baseline PTSD symptoms, and baseline trauma history was assessed in the emergency department. PTSD symptoms were again assessed 6‐months posttrauma. Neighborhood poverty rate was determined using the American Community Survey. Correlation analyses revealed that neighborhood poverty was significantly associated with baseline PTSD symptoms (r = 0.181, p = 0.004) and PTSD symptoms 6‐months posttrauma (r = 0.163, p = 0.009). A regression analysis controlling for baseline trauma exposure, clinician‐rated trauma severity, and individual socioeconomic status demonstrated that neighborhood poverty predicted PTSD symptoms six‐months posttrauma (R2 = 0.099, B = 0.15, p = 0.04), but this relationship was no longer significant when baseline PTSD symptoms was added as an additional covariate (R2 = 0.304, B = 0.07, p > 0.05). Overall, results suggest that neighborhood poverty generally increases PTSD symptom severity, and the context in which an individual lives should be considered when conceptualizing risk for PTSD.

Abstract Racially minoritized women with limited socioeconomic resources are at increased risk for adverse psychological outcomes in response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic. Disproportionate rates of trauma exposure and economic insecurity likely heighten risk for these outcomes among socioeconomically vulnerable individuals, but the unique contributions of these factors are poorly understood. As such, we examined trauma and economic factors as predictors of pandemic‐related psychological distress and symptoms. Ninety‐six women recruited for a trauma research study (91.7% Black, Mage = 38.3 years, SDage = 11.8 years) completed measures of trauma exposure, economic insecurity, and several items assessing psychological distress and symptoms related to the COVID‐19 pandemic. We examined concern for mental and physical health impacts of COVID‐19 as well as changes in self‐reported levels of anxiety and anhedonia from the 3 months before the pandemic to the previous 2 weeks. Linear regression analyses were used to assess contributions of trauma exposure and economic insecurity to COVID‐19‐related distress. Abstract The inefficient distribution of fertilizers, nutrients, and pesticides on crops is a major challenge in modern agriculture that leads to reduced productivity and environmental pollution. Nanoformulation of agrochemicals is an attractive approach to enable the selective delivery of agents into specific plant organs, their release in those tissues, and improve their efficiency. Already commercialized nanofertilizers utilize the physiochemical properties of metal nanoparticles such as size, charge, and the metal core to overcome biological barriers in plants to reach their target sites. Despite their wide application in human diseases, lipid nanoparticles are rarely used in agricultural applications and a systematic screening approach to identifying efficacious formulations has not been reported. Here, we developed a quantitative metal-encoded platform to determine the biodistribution of different lipid nanoparticles in plant tissues. In this platform lanthanide metal complexes were encapsulated into four types of lipid nanoparticles. Our approach was able to successfully quantify payload accumulation for all the lipid formulations across the roots, stem, and leaf of the plant. Lanthanide levels were 20- to 57-fold higher in the leaf and 100- to 10,000-fold higher in the stem for the nanoparticle encapsulated lanthanide complexes compared to the unencapsulated, free lanthanide complex. This system will facilitate the discovery of nanoparticles as delivery carriers for agrochemicals and plant tissue-targeting products.

We reviewed invasive Nocardia infections in 3 noncontiguous geographic areas in the United States during 2011–2018. Among 268 patients with invasive nocardiosis, 48.2% were from Minnesota, 32.4% from Arizona, and 19.4% from Florida. Predominant species were N. nova complex in Minnesota (33.4%), N. cyriacigeorgica in Arizona (41.4%), and N. brasiliensis in Florida (17.3%). Transplant recipients accounted for 82/268 (30.6%) patients overall: 14 (10.9%) in Minnesota, 35 (40.2%) in Arizona, and 33 (63.5%) in Florida. Manifestations included isolated pulmonary nocardiosis among 73.2% of transplant and 84.4% of non–transplant patients and central nervous system involvement among 12.2% of transplant and 3.2% of non–transplant patients. N. farcinica (20.7%) and N. cyriacigeorgica (19.5%) were the most common isolates among transplant recipients and N. cyriacigeorgica (38.0%), N. nova complex (23.7%), and N. farcinica (16.1%) among non–transplant patients. Overall antimicrobial susceptibilities were similar across the 3 study sites.

To investigate the influence of flow rate increment on the solute transport parameter of immobile zones in a karst system, a dye tracer test was conducted in the Downtown Salado Spring Complex (DSSC) comprising three springs: Big Boiling, Anderson, and Doc Benedict springs. The Multiflow two-region nonequilibrium model (2RNE) was used to simulate the breakthrough curve (BTC) of the springs, and changes in the solute transport parameters in response to flow rate increment were observed. The simulation result showed that the 2RNE model was capable of reproducing the BTC of all the DSSC springs, with an R-squared value greater than 0.9 in all flow rate increment scenarios. The research demonstrates that a positive correlation will exist between the flow rate and solute transport parameter of the immobile zones if the tracer transport to the spring is truly influenced by immobile zones. In contrast, a negative correlation will exist between the flow rate and mass transfer coefficient if the immobile zone has less influence. Overall, the research provides insights into contaminant movement in karst by documenting how tracers are retained in the immobile fluid zone.

Detailed characterization of human pancreatic islets is key to elucidating the pathophysiology of all forms of diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes. However, access to human pancreatic islets is limited. Pancreatic tissue for islet retrieval can be obtained from brain-dead organ donors or from individuals undergoing pancreatectomy, often referred to as living donors. Different protocols for human islet procurement can substantially impact islet function. This variability, coupled with heterogeneity between individuals and islets, results in analytical challenges to separate genuine disease pathology or differences between human donors from experimental noise. There are currently no international guidelines for human donor phenotyping, islet procurement and functional characterization. This lack of standardization means that substantial investments from multiple international efforts towards improved understanding of diabetes pathology cannot be fully leveraged. In this Perspective, we overview the status of the field of human islet research, highlight the challenges and propose actions that could accelerate research progress and increase understanding of type 2 diabetes to slow its pandemic spreading.

Cancer mortality is primarily a consequence of its metastatic spread. Here, we report that methionine sulfoxide reductase A (MSRA), which can reduce oxidized methionine residues, acts as a suppressor of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) metastasis. MSRA expression is decreased in the metastatic tumors of PDA patients, whereas MSRA loss in primary PDA cells promotes migration and invasion. Chemoproteomic profiling of pancreatic organoids revealed that MSRA loss results in the selective oxidation of a methionine residue (M239) in pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2). Moreover, M239 oxidation sustains PKM2 in an active tetrameric state to promote respiration, migration, and metastasis, whereas pharmacological activation of PKM2 increases cell migration and metastasis in vivo. These results demonstrate that methionine residues can act as reversible redox switches governing distinct signaling outcomes and that the MSRA-PKM2 axis serves as a regulatory nexus between redox biology and cancer metabolism to control tumor metastasis.

As part of the U.S. National Seismic Hazard Model (NSHM) update planned for 2023, two databases were prepared to more completely represent Quaternary-active faulting across the western United States: the NSHM23 fault sections database (FSD) and earthquake geology database (EQGeoDB). In prior iterations of NSHM, fault sections were included only if a field-measurement-derived slip rate was estimated along a given fault. By expanding this inclusion criteria, we were able to assess a larger set of faults for use in NSHM23. The USGS Quaternary Fault and Fold Database served as a guide for assessing possible additions to the NSHM23 FSD. Reevaluating available data from published sources yielded an increase of fault sections from ~650 faults in NSHM18 to ~1,000 faults proposed for use in NSHM23. EQGeoDB, a companion dataset linked to NSHM23 FSD, contains geologic slip rate estimates for fault sections included in FSD. Together, these databases serve as common input data used in deformation modeling, earthquake rupture forecasting, and additional downstream uses in NSHM development.

Neuron navigator 1 (Nav1) is a cytoskeleton-associated protein expressed during brain development that is necessary for proper neuritogenesis, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Here we show that Nav1 is present in elongating axon tracts during mouse brain embryogenesis. We found that depletion of Nav1 in cultured neurons disrupts growth cone morphology and neurotrophin-stimulated neuritogenesis. In addition to regulating both F-actin and microtubule properties, Nav1 promotes actin-rich membrane ruffles in the growth cone and promotes macropinocytosis at those membrane ruffles, including internalization of the TrkB receptor for the neurotrophin brain-derived neurotropic factor (BDNF). Growth cone macropinocytosis is important for downstream signaling, neurite targeting, and membrane recycling, implicating Nav1 in one or more of these processes. Depletion of Nav1 also induces transient membrane blebbing via disruption of signaling in the Rho GTPase signaling pathway, supporting the novel role of Nav1 in dynamic actin-based membrane regulation at the cell periphery. These data demonstrate that Nav1 works at the interface of microtubules, actin, and plasma membrane to organize the cell periphery and promote uptake of growth and guidance cues to facilitate neural morphogenesis during development.

In the present study, we tested a visual feedback triggering system based on real-time tracking of response time (RT) in a sustained attention task. In our task, at certain points, brief visual feedback epochs were presented without interrupting the task itself. When these feedback epochs were performance-linked--meaning that they were triggered because participants were responding more quickly than usual--RTs were slowed after the presentation of feedback. However, visual feedback epochs displayed at predetermined times that were independent of participants' performance did not slow RTs. Results from a second experiment support the idea that this is not simply a return to baseline that would have occurred had the feedback not been presented, but instead suggest that the feedback itself was effective in altering participants' responses. In a third experiment, we replicated this result across with both written word feedback and visual symbolic feedback, as well as in cases where the participant was explicitly told that the feedback was linked to their performance. All together, these data provide insight into potential mechanisms for detecting and disrupting lapses in sustained attention without interrupting a continuous task.

For over 10 years, and prior to the release of the 2020 NASP standards, school psychology faculty at California State University, Long Beach have sought to broaden the training and preservice experiences of our students in consultation and systems change. The coauthors sought and obtained federal funding to provide scholarships for our students to engage in extensive readings, discussions, and fieldwork activities that went beyond our core program to increase students' skill development and confidence in promoting a multitiered system of support (MTSS). Simultaneously, we sought to recruit, retain, and graduate more diverse school psychology students. Our nontraditional training and recruitment activities as well as the short- and long-term outcomes of this project are described. The results of this initiative include a significant increase in diverse school psychologists, curriculum changes to incorporate training grant opportunities for all program students, and alumni who report competence in engaging in consultation at the systems-level.

Interprofessional education (IPE) is important to prepare graduate students for collaborative practice. This mixed methods study sought to evaluate a full-semester, asynchronous online IPE course for graduate students. Thirty-one graduate social work, nursing, public health, and health administration students participated. Interprofessional socialization and collaborative competencies were measured at three points in the semester. There were statistically significant improvements in self-reported socialization and competencies. Qualitative analysis revealed participants experienced new perspectives, developed appreciation of interprofessional collaboration, practiced communication and teamwork skills, and used course lessons in clinical practice. Study findings indicate that online IPE can help improve graduate students' interprofessional socialization and collaborative competencies. Further, students indicated they applied course lessons to their school and work clinical practice sites.

In the competitive context of Division I (DI) intercollegiate sport, an unwillingness to undertake change can often reflect the attitudes of complacency on the part of stakeholders, that their institution is doing an adequate job in providing the optimal experience for its student-athletes, or resignation, that they can do no more to increase success. This paper examines New State University's, a pseudonym for a DI Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), organizational deficit thinking. It demonstrates prevalent deficit thinking in intercollegiate athletics and offers suggestions to reframe such thinking. Schroeder's (2010) case study cultural framework was used and the interaction of four collegiate environments examined. These were institutional culture, leadership and power, internal athletic department, and external athletic department. Data collection and triangulation analysis included 36 interviews, researcher observations, photos, archival data, and social media. The complexity of assumptions, traditions, deeply held beliefs, and values suggests a proud sense of identity projected to the outside world that, nevertheless, prevents the internal athletic department's ability to address perennial deficit thinking. In this case, the nexus justifying deficit thinking centered on geographical location of the university. Specifically, location was blamed for team losses, inability to retain quality coaches, and a negative culture of fandom. On a larger scale, deficit thinking may be prevalent in many DI universities attempting to compete with the few programs with perennial championships across sports.

Although voting is a fundamental mechanism through which Americans engage with their democracy, social workers often do not see it as a valid component of practice. Voting is an important source of political power and provides a means to ensure equitable representation. Educating social work students on how they can encourage voter engagement within practice is an important step to rectifying this missed opportunity. This article describes the implementation of a voter engagement model in social work education. Pre- and post-tests from 475 participants demonstrate the efficacy of this model in increasing social work students' perceived importance of voting to their practice, their likelihood of voting in future elections, and their likelihood of engaging others in voting in future elections.

As the nation's high school student population becomes increasingly diverse, the lack of minority teachers, particularly African American male teachers, is a concern. This case study of African American male high school teachers in a mid-sized market in the Midwest sought to identify the motivations for teaching, the barriers prior to and during teaching, and the roles these individuals are asked to fill in their schools. Ten individuals participated in semi-structured interviews for which critical race theory served as the theoretical framework. By expanding the conversation on race and racism within the educational system, this research sought to expose what injustices African American male teachers experience, not only during their time in school, but later during their careers as educators. This research gives voice to a silenced minority and increases our understanding to help us address the question, "Where are the Black men?" Finally, recommendations are offered to those serving in human resource administration positions in local school districts.

Collaboration and teamwork are concepts routinely attributed to organizational success and successful change management. Yet often the details of these collaborative experiences are limited to participants in the team involved. In this case study we highlight how a learning experience architect, as part of an organizational working group, could leverage human performance technology (HPT) principles to lead the analysis efforts surrounding an LMS platform change at a professional training organization. Human performance technology is the study and practice of improving productivity in organizations. This includes designing and developing effective interventions, processes, and methodologies that are ethical, results-oriented, comprehensive, and systemic (West, 2018). This article covers the project's genesis, the project team's creation, and how the analysis work was carried out. The first author's unique access to the subject matter of this case study provides the ability to present the project's analysis phase in the following narrative format. This article's intrinsic case study represents an exploratory inquiry into a single case, as this article's conclusions are inherently limited to its scope. Nevertheless, the article provides evidence that large scale change within organizations requires a balance of effective communication practices and organizational systems thinking.

Autistic people experience disparities in employment which may be exacerbated for individuals in skilled employment. Little is known about the experiences of autistic people in skilled employment or how they define success. We used a community-based participatory research approach to conduct a thematic analysis with an inductive approach at a semantic level through a critical realist paradigm. We interviewed 45 autistic people with skilled training, 11 supervisors, and 8 key informants. We purposively sampled to maximize variation. We addressed trustworthiness through multiple coders and peer debriefing. Common themes included high stakes of disclosure, unconventional pathways to careers, disconnects with service and support systems, mental health challenges from trauma/burnout, autistic advantages in the workplace, and complex dimensions of discrimination. Participants defined success as opportunities for growth, work/life balance, financial independence, sense of community, and feeling valued, accepted, and like their work had meaning. Strategies to facilitate success suggested a multi-faceted and wholistic approach including attention to the role of supervisors. Our findings suggest a highly customizable, systems-focused, multifaceted approach to autism employment intervention could be useful in improving skilled employment outcomes. We recommend further work particularly in the areas of disclosure and destigmatizing disability in the workplace.

This program description provides an overview of the peer-to-peer student staff model used by the Women and Gender Studies Program and Center at George Mason University. The program description lays out the unique structure of the unit, the need for this type of model, and how its structure is feminist in nature while also catering to student needs.

In 2018, thousands of teachers in West Virginia, Oklahoma, and Arizona walked off the job to protest low salaries and increase school funding. These strikes were significant because they were statewide and took place in "right to work" states. We analyze news media articles published in these states about the teachers' strikes for insights into how local news media coverage might reflect and shape public opinion about teachers and teachers' work. Using the social construction of target populations as a framework for the analysis, we analyze news media articles within and across the three states. We conclude that the news media coverage of the strikes in the three states diverged from national newspaper coverage in ways that may have increased the general public's support for teachers and the teaching profession in these states during this period. Our analysis provides insights into possible counternarratives that can interrupt neoliberal narratives about teachers and teaching.

There has been an increasing focus on services aimed at engaging transition-age youth and emerging adults who are at risk of developing, or have developed, behavioral health disorders. However, a need remains for further development of specialized services for this population. This study evaluates a transition-age youth at risk (TYAR) training model within a Master of Social Work (MSW) program in New England. This convergent parallel mixed-method study collected student and field instructor data throughout each of the program's three consecutive years (cohorts 1, 2, and 3). Students' confidence related to working with TYAR clients increased over time within each cohort and throughout the program's development. Opportunities and challenges for collaborative and iterative evaluations of MSW curriculums are discussed.

This review paper describes the energy-upgraded Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) accelerator. This superconducting linac has achieved 12 GeV beam energy by adding 11 new high-performance cryomodules containing 88 superconducting cavities that have operated cw at an average accelerating gradient of 20 MV/m. After reviewing the attributes and performance of the previous 6 GeV CEBAF accelerator, we discuss the upgraded CEBAF accelerator system in detail with particular attention paid to the new beam acceleration systems. In addition to doubling the acceleration in each linac, the upgrade included improving the beam recirculation magnets, adding more helium cooling capacity to allow the newly installed modules to run cold, adding a new experimental hall, and improving numerous other accelerator components. We review several of the techniques deployed to operate and analyze the accelerator performance and document system operating experience and performance. In the final portion of the document, we present much of the current planning regarding projects to improve accelerator performance and enhance operating margins, and our plans for ensuring CEBAF operates reliably into the future. For the benefit of potential users of CEBAF, the performance and quality measures for the beam delivered to each of the experimental halls are summarized in the Appendix.
