The monotypic Philureter n. gen. (Ancyrocephalinae; Dactylogyridae) is proposed to accommodate Philureter trigoniopsis n. sp. with the following features: presence of a cuplike ventral haptor armed with 14 hooks and 2 anchor/bar complexes; dorsal pair of anchors poorly defined and variable in shape, 1 frequently absent; tandem, intercecal gonads, testis bilaterally lobulated. Philureter trigoniopsis n. sp. is described from the ureters and urinary bladder of Galaxias maculatus (Jenyns, 1842) (Osmeriformes) in Patagonian Andean lakes, Argentina.

We detected 2 species of monogenean gill worms, Pseudodactylogyrus bini (Kikuchi, 1929) Gusev, 1965 and P. anguillae (Yin & Sproston, 1948) Gusev, 1965 (Monopisthocotylea: Pseudodactylogyridae), on American eel Anguilla rostrata in 2 rivers in South Carolina, USA. One of these, P. anguillae, was reported 5 yr ago from Nova Scotia; as well as in South Carolina, we also discovered it in 2 localities in Chesapeake Bay. Differences in the morphologies of specimens of either species of worm from North America and northeastern Asia were negligible. Similarly, the level of variation in sequences in the ITS2 (internal transcribed spacers) region of ribosomal RNA was minor, and not consistent with geographical origin. These data indicate that these monogeneans invaded North America only recently, possibly in parallel with the nematode Anguillicola crassus (which is known to have been introduced with commercial imports of foreign eels). We map the current global occurrence of these monogeneans, and conclude that their dispersal from northeastern Asia was largely as a result of the eel trade, and has probably been secondarily augmented by longshore migration of infected eels, and possibly also by transport in ballast waters. With present technology, all eel stocks must still be collected from the wild; unless shipments are disinfected at quarantine, these and other eel pathogens (such as A. crassus) are likely to continue to colonise other regions of the world.

Swingleus ancistrus n. sp. (Monogenea: Gyrodactylidae) is described from the skin and fins of Fundulus heteroclitus from Canary Creek Marsh, Lewes, Delaware. Subsequent records from New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina are reported. Swingleus ancistrus is differentiated from S. polyclithroides, the only other species of the genus, primarily by its size, haptoral morphology, host, and locality. Swingleus ancistrus is larger in almost every dimension and exhibits a distinct notch on the anterior border of the opisthaptor, and several features of the haptoral anatomy and peduncular bar are unique. The prevalence of infection in hosts collected from the type locality in August was 100%. The maximum number of S. ancistrus recovered from a single host was 134. The average intensity of infection was 24 S. ancistrus per host from the type locality.

Recruiting coral reef fish larvae from 38 species and 19 families from New Caledonia were examined for parasites. We found 13 parasite species (Platyhelminthes: Monogenea, Cestoda and Trematoda) but no acanthocephalan, crustacean or nematode parasites. Over 23% of individual fish were infected. Didymozoid metacercariae were the most abundant parasites. We conclude that most of the parasites are pelagic species that become 'lost' once the fish larvae have recruited to the reef. Larval coral reef fish probably contribute little to the dispersal of the parasites of the adult fish so that parasite dispersal is more difficult than that of the fish themselves.

The primary structure of the ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacers (ITS-1 and ITS-2) and 5.8S rRNA gene were used to characterize and identify 2 monogenean species of Gyrodacrylus living externally on the threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus). The ITS region was amplified by PCR from freshwater, brackish, and marine isolates of Gyrodactylus arcuatus and G. branchicus, and the ends of the coding regions were identified by comparative alignment. No intraspecific and very low interspecific variation were observed in the 5.8S rRNA gene; high inter- and low intraspecific variation were revealed in the ITS-1 and ITS-2 regions. The morphological species identification was in all cases confirmed by the molecular identification. Intraspecifically, samples from 2 locations in the North Sea could be differentiated, but the Baltic sample resembled North Sea genotypes. Our approach offers perspectives for a multimetric genetical, morphometrical, and ecological taxonomy of the genus Gyrodactylus.

Neopolystoma elizabethae n. sp. is described from the conjunctival sac of the western painted turtle Chrysemys picta belli (Gray), from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This is the first species found in this location from chelonians in North America. The new species differs from all other species of Neopolystoma in possessing a circle of 8 genital spines that are recurved and possess a crescent-shaped base. Eight additional species of helminths were found in the 5 turtles examined in this study. All are common parasites of North American freshwater turtles. An additional species of Monogenea (Polystomoidespauli) was found in the oral cavity. Four species of Digenea (Eustomos chelydrae, Allassostomoides chelydrae, Spirorchis kirki, and Spirorchis parvus) and 3 species of Nematoda (Spiroxys contorta, Serpinema trispinosus, and Amphibiocapillaria serpentina) were also found. The following are reported from Michigan for the first time: P. pauli, S. kirki, and A. serpentina.

A new species of Sprostoniella is described from the gills of Chaetodipterus zonatus in Chamela Bay, on the west coast of Mexico. The new species differs from the 2 previously described congeners by having smaller testes each of which is not nearly as long as the ovary. It further differs from the type species, Sprostoniella multitestis, by having a poorly developed pair of accessory sclerites and the cecal diverticula are not confluent posteriorly. The new species also differs from Sprostoniella micrancyra, the other species of the genus, by having a shorter peduncle, the glands of Goto are smaller than the testes and ovary, and by having a slightly different haptoral structure, with 1 pair of hamuli rather than 2 pairs, and 1 central haptoral loculus instead of 2 loculi.

Neodiplozoon polycotyleus Paperna, 1973 is recorded from Barbus marequensis Smith, 1841, Barbus neefi Greenwood, 1862, and Barbus trimaculatus Peters, 1852 in the Limpopo River System, Northern Province, South Africa.

The phylogeny of the genus Udonella has been disputed for quite some time, but recent phylogenetic analysis of molecular data confirms that the genus is a monopisthocotylean monogenean. Specimens of Udonella myliobati parasitizing the copepod Lepeophtheirus natalensis, an ectoparasite of the spotted ragged-tooth shark, (Carcharias taurus), were collected and studied. A total of 771 monogenean specimens were recovered from 54 infected copepods examined, with a mean intensity of 14,3 worms per copepod. Most of the monogeneans were found attached to the dorsal surface of the lateral and frontal marginal membranes of the copepod carapace. Eggs, with filaments and adhesive discs, were found ventrally on the host, mainly attached to the maxillae and maxillipeds, in clusters of 12-14. Observations on the morphology, distribution and behaviour of this monogenean are presented with the aid of light and scanning electron microscopy.

A new species, Gyrodactylus onegensis sp. n., is described from gills of the freshwater sculpin Cottus gobio.

The data on an occurrence of capsalines in marine fishes are analyzed. 33 capsaline species among 55 recently known species are monoxienous, that points to the high specialization of these monogeneans. The majority of species are recorded from three subfamilies of perciform fishes: Scombridae, Istiophoridae, Xiphiidae. Possible factors causing the high specificity in monogeneans are discussed.

The occurrence of Tylodelphys barilochensis, Acanthostomoides apophalliformis, Contracaecum sp. and Camallanus corderoi infecting Galaxias maculatus ("puyenes") was quantified for the first time in Lake Nahuel Huapi, southern Argentina. T. barilochensis was recorded in this lake for the first time. The role of G. maculatus population in transmission of parasites to the salmonids is more important for Contracaecum sp. (prevalence 14-34%) and A. apophalliformis (prevalence 30-54%) than for C. corderoi (prevalence 6-8%). The absence of Diphyllobothrium spp. in samples shows that the G. maculatus population does not play any role in the life cycles of these important zoonotic parasites. The sex of the host had no effect on T. barilochensis abundance. Statistical differences in T. barilochensis abundance between "puyenes" of the same size class between sampling stations and positive correlation between prevalence of infected snails and T. barilochensis abundance in fish suggest that different stocks have been sampled. Factors influencing T. barilochensis abundance are discussed.

The actions of known platyhelminth FaRPs on the contractility of whole-worm preparations of the monogenean, Diclidophora merlangi have been examined in vitro for the first time. All of the peptides tested had excitatory effects on the motor activity of the worm. The order of potency for the peptides tested was: YIRFamide > GYIRFamide = RYIRFamide > GNFFRFamide = FLRFamide. However, although YIRFamide was more potent than GYIRFamide, the latter was the most efficacious on each of the motility parameters (tension, contraction amplitude and contraction frequency) examined at concentrations > or = 0.1 microM. Serotonin, which stimulates contractility in the worm was used as a positive control. The excitatory activity of turbellarian and cestode neuropeptides on a monogenean indicates at least some structural similarities in the neuropeptide receptors of these classes of flatworm.

A total of 2,571 of the copepod Caligus epidemicus Hewitt from the yellow-fin bream, Acanthopagrus australis Günther, was examined for udonellids. Calinella myliobati Guberlet, 1936 was found on 3.3% of male copepods and 10.1% of female copepods. A new combination, Udonella myliobati (Guberlet, 1936) is proposed and its description emended. It differs from the type species Udonella caligorum Johnston, 1835 (as described by Price [1938]) in having a short egg filament and a median genital aperture. Only 1 of 102 chalimus larvae was infected, by a single adult worm. Juvenile udonellids common on mature copepods, were not found on any of the chalimus larvae. The highest number of U. myliobati (Guberlet, 1936), including hatching and unhatched eggs on 1 copepod, was 159. Adult and juvenile worms were attached mainly along the margins of the carapace and to the genital complex, whereas the majority of the eggs were attached to the ventral surface of the genital complex. The transfer of an adult worm from a male copepod to a female copepod was observed while the copepods were copulating. The large number of udonellids on a small population of mostly female copepods from the Brisbane River suggested that this was an aging population of copepods compared to the copepods collected from a semi-enclosed pond.

Ultrastructural observations of the gut caecal epithelium of Pricea multae revealed the presence of pigmented and non-pigmented digestive cells. The pigmented digestive cells were separated by a connecting syncytium and appeared elongated, with numerous vesicles appearing toward the apical cell surface. They were characterised by granular inclusions in the form of electron-dense pigments, which were eliminated by exocytosis. These cells and their lamellar connecting syncytium were observed projecting into the gut lumen. Transverse sections of the gut epithelium revealed intact portions of digestive cells lying in the lumen. Endocytosis at the apical surface of the pigmented digestive cells gave rise to the formation of granular inclusions, which appeared as electron-dense pigments confined to lysosomal vesicles within the digestive system. Electron X-ray microanalysis indicated these granules were primarily composed of iron, demonstrating that P. multae is a blood-feeder. The connecting syncytium, while probably involved in a structural, supportive role, may additionally function in the absorption of micromolecular nutrients from the host blood meal.

Paradistomoidella cerberi n.g., n.sp. and Paracanthostomum cerberi from Cerberus rhynchops, Xenopharynx pyriformis and Allopharynx mehrai from Ptyas korros, Neopronocephalus orientalis from Geoemyda spinosa, and Duthiersia expansa from Varanus salvator are all reported from the area of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Paradistomoidella cerberi most closely resembles members of Paradistomoides but is characterized by relatively short caeca, a cirrus sac containing a bipartite rather than sinous internal seminal vesicle, and unevenly-sized suckers. Kuala Lumpur is a new locality for Paracanthostomum cerberi, X. pyriformis, A. mehrai, and D. expansa. Ptyas korros is a new host for X. pyriformis and G. spinosa is a new host for N. orientalis.

The family Labicolidae is erected to contain a new species of Monostome fluke occurring in abcesses in the upper lip of the dugong from northern Australia. Labicola elongata is described as a new species and figured.

A global study of the Metazoan parasites of Boops boops (L., 1758) have been made in the "golfe du Lion". Fourteen different species (eight Platyhelmintha, one Nematoda and five Crustacea) have been inventorized. Their respective localisation on the hosts, globals and specifics corresponding prevalences as well as their variations according to the size of the fish, and their abundance have been precised. Parasitics associations have also been examined.

The ultrastructure of the flame cell, protonephridial capillaries and excretory pore of larval and embryonic Austramphilina elongata is described. The weir apparatus of the flame cell consists of internal and external longitudinal rods (ribs) connected by a membrane and with many internal and some external leptotriches. Cilia are densely packed and have cross-striated and branching vertical rootlets. Axonemal doublets lose one tubule and decrease in number towards the tip of the cilia. The cell body proximal to the weir apparatus contains a nucleus, numerous mitochondria, Golgi complexes, and many ribosomes. Serial cross-sections of flame cells in embryos revealed that there are no desmosome-connected cytoplasmic cords anywhere along the flame cells; external ribs are in contact with the proximal cytoplasm by means of desmosomes and fuse to form the distal cytoplasmic tube; internal ribs continue as free processes between the flame and the distal cytoplasmic tube. Numerous 'filaments' (microtubules?) extend between the ciliary rootlets and into the cytoplasm of embryonic flame cells. Some free axonemes were seen in the cell body of embryonic flame cells.

The parasite fauna of juvenile Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., at a smolt-rearing unit in eastern Scotland was monitored from two weeks after first-feeding until smolting occurred (May 1973-April 1975). A total of 625 fish was examined. Wild salmon from the river supplying the unit with unfiltered water were also examined. The cultured fish yielded eight protozoan and seven metazoan parasite species, all derived from wild fish. The parasite fauna of cultured fish became established quickly, subsequent changes involving loss of some species and increasing abundance of others. The metazoan parasite fauna was restricted to those species with free-swimming infective stages capable of entering the tanks.

Study of the Monogenean gill parasites occuring in the Mormyrid fish from Benin (Africa). Description of a new genus, Bouixella. It differs from the other Ancyrocephalidae by the number (4) of cross bars between the haptoral hamuli. This new genus seems to bee specific of the mormyridae among which a new example of simultaneous gill parasitism by congeneric species is reported.
