Os venenos de serpentes são secreções com uma diversa composição de toxinas com características estruturais e funcionais particularmente interessantes. Embora possam ser letais, os venenos exibem potentes constituintes cuja a atividade e especificidade os tornam excelentes modelos para o desenvolvimento de novos fármacos. O estudo da bioatividade destas toxinas permite evidenciar a sua utilidade para o tratamento de diversas patologias que afetam a saúde humana. Desta forma, nesta revisão abordamos os principais constituintes dos venenos e os seus mecanismos no processo de envenenamento. Metais tóxicos e corantes estão entre os poluentes perigosos mais comuns presentes em águas residuárias industriais. A adsorção é uma das técnicas de tratamento de efluentes mais empregadas, e pode ser aperfeiçoada ao utilizar-se adsorventes em escala nanométrica, os nanoadsorventes. Para lidar com a dificuldade de seu manuseio e separação química do meio aquoso, a filtração magnética para adsorventes magnéticos surge como uma promissora solução. Nesse cenário, o objetivo deste trabalho foi elaborar, caracterizar e avaliar a aplicação de novos nanoadsorventes magnéticos baseados em nanopartículas core@shell visando a remoção do corante têxtil Azul Brilhante de Remazol R (RBBR) e do metal tóxico arsênio (As(V)) de meios aquosos. Os nanoadsorventes foram constituídos por um núcleo de ferrita de cobalto, que promove eficiente separação magneticamente assistida, cobertas por uma casca de maghemita, que protege o núcleo contra oxidação e dissolução em meio fortemente ácido, além de possuir afinidade com o As(V), e recobertas superficialmente com o surfactante CTAB, no caso da remoção de RBBR, que permite a adsorção do corante em regiões polares e apolares. As amostras foram sintetizadas por coprecipitação, seguida de tratamento superficial e cobertura de CTAB, e passaram por caracterizações estrutural, morfológica, composicional, de carga e área superficiais e propriedades magnéticas, que mostraram sua aptidão em adsorver os poluentes e a viabilidade da separação química assistida magneticamente. Foram ainda investigadas as influências de diversas variáveis no processo de adsorção. O pH de melhor remoção foi igual a 2 para o As(V) e 3 para o RBBR. As isotermas seguiram os modelos de Freundlich e Langmuir na remoção de As(V) e RBBR, respectivamente, com qmáx de 46,9 e até 56,3 mg/g, respectivamente. O tempo de equilíbrio para a adsorção do As(V) foi longo e do RBBR foi notavelmente curto, com t1/2 de até 38 segundos. A cinética de adsorção seguiu os modelos de Elovich e o de Pseudo Segunda-Ordem para remoção de As(V) e RBBR respectivamente. A taxa de agitação atingiu um patamar ótimo de 400 RPM a partir do qual seu aumento influencia pouco na adsorção de RBBR. Os testes termodinâmicos da adsorção de RBBR indicam que a adsorção é um processo espontâneo e favorável, e que os nanoadsorventes possuem afinidade pelas moléculas de corante independentemente da temperatura. A presença dos interferentes Na2SO4 e PO4 3− impactou negativamente a adsorção de RBBR, e As(V), respectivamente. A adsorção de As(V) foi indiferente na presença de ácido húmico e foi favorecida com NaCl. A amostra de menor tamanho médio cristalino para remoção de RBBR obteve desempenho superior, o que se relaciona à sua maior área superficial. As amostras passaram por 3 ciclos de reuso. Os nanoadsorventes propostos se mostraram potencialmente aplicáveis para remoção dos poluentes testados, com capacidade de reutilização das amostras, e potencial recuperação dos componentes de arsênio, sendo assim promissoras e sustentáveis opções para o tratamento de efluentes. Toxic metals and dyes are among the most common hazardous pollutants present in industrial wastewater. Adsorption is one of the most used effluent treatment techniques, and can be improved by using nano-scale adsorbents, the nanoadsorbents. To deal with the difficulty of handling and chemical separation from the aqueous medium, magnetic filtration for magnetic adsorbents appears as a promising solution. In this scenario, the objective of this work was to elaborate, characterize and evaluate the application of new magnetic nanoadsorbents based on core@shell nanoparticles in order to remove the textile dye Remazol Brilliant Blue R (RBBR) and the toxic metal arsenic (As(V)) from aqueous media. The nanoadsorbents were constituted by a cobalt ferrite core, which promotes an efficient magnetically assisted separation, covered by a maghemite shell, which protects the core against oxidation and dissolution in a strongly acidic medium, besides having an affinity with As(V), and superficially covered with the CTAB surfactant, in the case of RBBR removal, which allows the adsorption of the dye in polar and nonpolar regions. The samples were synthesized by coprecipitation, followed by a surface treatment and CTAB coverage, and underwent structural, morphological, compositional, charge and surface area and magnetic properties characterizations, which showed their ability to adsorb pollutants and the viability of magnetically assisted chemical separation. The influence of several variables on the adsorption process was also investigated. The best removal was at pH 2 for As(V) and 3 for RBBR. The isotherms followed the Freundlich and Langmuir models to remove As(V) and RBBR, respectively, with a qmax of 46.9 and up to 56.3 mg/g, respectively. The equilibrium time for As(V) adsorption was long, while for RBBR it was remarkably short, with t1/2 of up to 38 seconds. The adsorption kinetics followed the Elovich and Pseudo Second-Order models for removing As(V) and RBBR respectively. The agitation rate reached an optimum level of 400 RPM, after which its increase had little influence on adsorption of RBBR. Thermodynamic tests of RBBR adsorption indicate that the adsorption is a spontaneous and favorable process, and that the nanoadsorbents have affinity for the dye molecules regardless of temperature. The presence of the interferents Na2SO4 and PO4 3− negatively impacted the adsorption of RBBR and As(V), respectively. The adsorption of As(V) was indifferent in the presence of humic acid and was slightly favored with NaCl. The sample with the lowest average crystalline size obtained superior performance for RBBR removal, which is related to its larger surface area. The samples went through 3 reuse cycles. The proposed nanoadsorbents proved to be potentially applicable for removing the tested pollutants, with the ability to reuse the samples, thus being promising and sustainable options for the treatment of effluents.

Literacy affects many aspects of language and cognition, including the shift from a more holistic mode of processing to a more analytical part-based mode of processing. Here we examined whether this shift impacts the ability of preschool and primary school children to learn the rules underlying a finite-state grammar using an artificial grammar learning (AGL) paradigm implemented with either linguistic (letters) or non-linguistic (colors) materials to further examine if children's AGL performance was modulated by type of stimuli. Both tasks involved a training phase in which half of the preschool children and half of the primary school children were exposed to a set of either letter or color strings without any information about the rules underlying the construction of those strings. Later, in the test phase, they were asked to decide whether a new set of letter or color strings conformed to those rules to test grammar learning. Results showed that only primary school children showed evidence of learning, and, importantly, only with colors. Analyzing classification algorithms of land use and land cover as well as images from sensors on satellites with different spatial resolutions are essential to determine the most suitable for each location. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of supervised classification algorithms, Maximum Likelihood (MLE) and Bhattacharyya, using medium spatial resolution (OLI/Landsat 8) and high (REIS/RapidEye) images in localized municipalities in the central of Rio Grande do Sul state. For this were used OLI/Landsat 8 and REIS/RapidEye sensor images with spatial resolution of 30 and 5 m, respectively. The classification of both images was performed by the MLE and Bhattacharyya algorithms with the definition of six classes of land use and land cover, these being Native Forest, Planted Forest, Exposed Soil, Agriculture, Field and Water. To evaluate the efficiency of the classification were used 120 points distributed randomly stratified in each municipality, 20 points in each class of land use and land cover. The quality of the classification was analyzed by Kappa and global accuracy indices, and the error of omission and commission was calculated. According to the results, the kappa index was higher for the classifications using the REIS/RapidEye sensor images for both algorithms, totaling 85.33% (MLE) and 83.67% (Bhattacharyya). In this context, it was possible to conclude that the REIS/RapidEye images and the MLE algorithm stand out for the best results, which are more adequate for the study area. Analisar algoritmos de classificação do uso e cobertura da terra bem como imagens provenientes de sensores a bordo de satélites com diferentes resoluções espaciais são essenciais para determinar os mais adequados para cada local. Assim, o presente estudo tem por objetivo avaliar a eficiência de algoritmos de classificação supervisionada, Máxima Verossimilhança (MaxVer) e Bhattacharyya, utilizando imagens de resolução espacial média (OLI/Landsat 8) e alta (REIS/RapidEye), em municípios localizados na porção central do estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Foram utilizadas para a classificação imagens do sensor OLI/Landsat 8 e REIS/RapidEye, com resolução espacial de 30 e 5 m, respectivamente. A classificação de ambas as imagens foi realizada pelos algoritmos MaxVer e Bhattacharyya com a definição de seis classes de uso e cobertura da terra, sendo estas Floresta nativa, Floresta plantada, Solo exposto, Agricultura, Campo e Água. Para avaliar a eficiência da classificação foram utilizados 120 pontos distribuídos de forma aleatória estratificada em cada município, sendo 20 pontos em cada classe de uso e cobertura da terra. A qualidade da classificação foi analisada pelos índices Kappa e exatidão global, ainda, calculou-se o erro de omissão e comissão. De acordo com os resultados obtidos o índice kappa foi maior para as classificações utilizando as imagens do sensor REIS/RapidEye para ambos os algoritmos, totalizando 85,33% (MaxVer) e 83,67% (Bhattacharyya). Neste contexto, foi possível concluir que as imagens REIS/RapidEye e o algoritmo MaxVer destacaram-se obtendo os melhores resultados, sendo estes mais adequados para a área de estudo.

Tese de Doutoramento em Contabilidade, This thesis analyses the link between Management Accounting (MA) and bureaucracy. The connection between them has not yet been analysed in previous studies. The main purpose of the thesis is to demystify bureaucracy, and to verify and understand its actual presence in organizations that are managed according to a contemporary MA tool, the Balanced Scorecard (BSC). The thesis is organized in four essays. The first essay presents a literature review that addresses the relationship between MA and bureaucracy. The essay concludes that developments in understanding bureaucracy are reflected in the evolution of MA tools and in the theoretical questioning of MA. The second essay presents the concept of neo-bureaucracy and highlights nine features that identify a contemporary bureaucratic order. The essay finds that the BSC is comprised of these nine features and that it adopts a neo-bureaucratic approach. The third essay reviews studies of the bureaucratic features of the operation of the BSC in hospitals and health care facilities. The essay also presents a qualitative case study of a Portuguese Local Health Unit (LHU) of a Public Sector Enterprise Health Care (PSEH) that implemented the BSC, evidencing full bureaucratic features. The fourth essay uses the metatheory of Thornton, Ocasio, and Lounsbury (2012), the Institutional Logic Perspective, to explain how the Portuguese PSEH context conducted to a neo-bureaucracy logic in its management. In this essay, three logics are identified: those of the state, the community and the profession, with the former logic dominant. Bureaucracy is still very present and valued in the PSEH, despite common prejudices against it. This thesis contributes to a better understanding of bureaucracy by stressing its relationship with the development of MA. The thesis proposes that the BSC be interpreted as a neo-bureaucratic device; and that institutional logic metatheory is a valid way to explain the Portuguese PSEH context and the persistence of bureaucracy therein. This thesis helps to develop a more mature understanding of bureaucracy. The implication for managers is that instead of confronting bureaucratic practices, they should accept bureaucracy as a form of collaborative, flexible and enabling management., Esta tese discute a ligação entre a Contabilidade de Gestão (MA) e a burocracia. Esta ligação nunca foi analisada em estudos anteriores. O principal objetivo é desmistificar a burocracia, verificar e compreender a sua real presença em organizações geridas por uma ferramenta contemporânea, o Balanced Scorecard (BSC). A tese está organizada em quatro ensaios. O primeiro ensaio apresenta uma revisão de literatura que aborda a relação entre a MA e a burocracia. O ensaio concluí que desenvolvimentos no entendimento da burocracia estão refletidos na evolução de ferramentas da MA e nas teorias que a questionam. O segundo ensaio apresenta o conceito de neo-burocracia e nove características que identificam uma ordem burocrática contemporânea. O ensaio verifica que o BSC encapsula estas nove características e que adota numa abordagem neo-burocrática. O terceiro ensaio revê estudos sobre as características burocráticas na implementação do BSC em hospitais e cuidados de saúde. O ensaio também apresenta um estudo de caso de uma Unidade Local de Saúde Portuguesa (LHU), pertencente ao Sector de Saúde Empresarial do Estado (PSEH), que implementou o BSC, evidenciando todas as características burocráticas. O quarto ensaio recorre à meta teoria de Thornton, Ocasio, and Lounsbury (2012), a Perspetiva da Lógica Institucional (ILP), para explicar como o contexto Português do PSEH conduziu a uma lógica neo-burocrática de gestão. Neste ensaio foram identificadas três lógicas: estado, comunidade e profissão; com a primeira lógica dominante. A burocracia continua muito presente e valorizada no contexto do PSEH, apesar dos seus preconceitos comuns. Esta tese contribui para uma melhor compreensão da burocracia através da sua relação com a MA. Esta tese propõe que o BSC seja interpretado como ferramenta neo-burocrática e que a meta teoria da lógica institucional é uma forma válida para explicar o contexto Português do PSEH e a persistência da burocracia. Esta tese contribui para uma visão mais madura da burocracia. A implicação para os gestores é que em vez de confrontarem práticas burocráticas devem aceitar a burocracia como forma de gestão colaborativa, flexível e capacitadora.

A redução da experimentação animal tem-se tornado uma prioridade nos últimos anos. As metodologias in vitro, nomeadamente através da realização de experiências com linhas celulares, têm demonstrado constituir uma alternativa rápida, simples, de baixo custo e sensível à experimentação animal. A classe Amphibia está em declínio a nível mundial e como tal tornou-se essencial o desenvolvimento de linhas celulares desta classe por forma a poder identificar o impacto da contaminação química nestes organismos e nos ecossistemas que eles habitam, sem recurso à utilização dos animais. O presente estudo pretendeu isolar e desenvolver uma linha celular de blástula da espécie de anfíbio Xenopus laevis, de modo a poderem ser usadas na avaliação de ecotoxicidade de compostos químicos. Para tal, utilizaram-se ovos de X. laevis em fase de blástula aos quais se removeu a gelatina e a membrana vitelina. Foram testados vários protocolos de descontaminação dos ovos e diferentes condições de cultura celular, variando o meio de cultura, e as concentrações de antibiótico e fungicida. The 1st International Conference on Business Technology for a Sustainable Environmental System (BTSES-2020), In high education, assessment components are very important as condition the student’s success. Such components must involve several issues including soft and hard skills. The quality of education will depend on the alignment of such skill and their assimilation by students. We present a course taught in Portuguese, belonging to the graduation of Accounting and Administration, that covers several assessment tasks such as oral presentation, written exams, operationalization of tasks, assessment of physical dossiers, punctuality and attendance, ethical behaviour, and company management report. Data were collected in 2019 thought to triangulate methods, namely documental analyses, direct observation, and paper questionnaires. We aim to evaluate the degree of importance perceived by students for each evaluation component. We conclude that the students consider all of the components very important, attributing less importance to hard skills, namely the multidisciplinary contents evaluated thought written exams. This paper contributes to higher education studies by presenting the alignment of an assessment model and students.
