This longitudinal study explores the adjustment experience of Korean immigrants in Canada by examining changes in their well-being during the first four years of settlement. Data were derived from the three-wave Longitudinal Survey of Immigrants to Canada, conducted between April 2001 and November 2005. We use a subsample of 1811 immigrants aged 15 years or older from South Korea (n= 351), Eastern European countries (n= 1152), and Western European countries (n= 308). Results indicated that changes in life satisfaction among Korean immigrants were significantly different from those found among Europeans. In Western and Eastern Europeans, the rates of life satisfaction declined gradually during the initial four years of settlement, whereas for Koreans the decline was drastic. Employment status among Korean women and income and ethnic network among Korean men were salient factors for declining life satisfaction. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This study examined differences in stigmatizing attitudes toward individuals addicted to drugs among three immigrant generations of youth, and the role of adolescent drug use and friends'' drug use on the association. Data were derived from the 2005 cycle of the Ontario Student Drug Use Survey administered to students in grades 7--12 in the province of Ontario, Canada. A sample of 4078 students completed questionnaires that included a measure of stigma toward drug addiction. Results indicated some immigrant generational differences in negative attitudes toward individuals addicted to drugs, but much of this difference was explained by adolescents'' individual drug use and friendships with individuals who use drugs. The difference between second-generation immigrant youth and their third- and later-generation counterparts was not fully explained. This study highlights the need for greater research on adolescent stigma toward drug addiction given that stigma may reduce drug usage but also may reduce help-seeking among individuals with an addiction. The study reports the prevalence and correlates of sexual and physical abuse in a sample of 100 female inpatients with schizophrenia in South Korea. Clinical assessment interviews consisted of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, the Scale for the Assessment of Positive Symptoms, an interview assessing history of sexual and repeated physical abuse, and demographic and psychosocial factors. Lifetime prevalence of severe sexual or physical abuse was 52%. Compared with nonabused patients (n = 48), the abused patients (n = 52) showed more nonpsychotic symptoms (i.e., anxiety, depression) and higher levels of distress, but no difference in psychotic symptoms. This study examines racial/ethnic differences in mental health using data from the 1996-97 National Population Health Survey. Three hypotheses are tested. First, a socioeconomic hypothesis tests if differences in family income, education, and low income explain racial/ethnic mental health variation. Second, a social resources hypothesis tests if differences in social support explain racial/ethnic mental health variation. Finally, an interaction hypothesis tests if mental health variation stems from specific interactions of race/ethnicity with economic and social factors. Although there are socioeconomic, social resource, and interaction effects, the analysis shows that they do not fully explain racial/ethnic mental health variation. Overall, our results suggest that East and Southeast Asian, Chinese, South Asian, and black Canadians have better mental health than English Canadians. Jewish Canadians have poorer mental health than English Canadians. All other racial/ethnic groupings have similar mental health as English Canadians. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents issues related to socio-cultural similarity and effective social support among Korean immigrants. It explores ways in which social support is associated with the psychological quality of life among a large sample of Korean immigrants in Canada. The focus is on the relative contribution of support from Koreans' fellow immigrants compared to support from non-Korean sources. This allows for a test of proposition concerning socio-cultural similarity and the effectiveness of social support, that the key to effective support is a complementary of needs and values of both parties in any social support transaction. On the basis of analyses of data from interviews of 864 Korean immigrants residing in Toronto, Ontario, results provide convincing evidence that is consistent with the hypothesis of socio-cultural similarity. It is clear that social support from members of their own culture have made substantially greater contributions to their well being than support from individuals from the broader community.

This paper explores a number of questions about the experience of psychological distress among parents of children with different health problems. Within the context of a stress process formulation, results from secondary analyses of data from two independent case-control studies are presented. The first is a study of parents whose children are in remission from cancer while the second focuses on parents whose children have developmental difficulties like infantile autism or Down syndrome. The results suggest that caring for children with health problems is associated with elevated levels of distress only in certain circumstances. The burden of caregiving appears to affect mothers more than fathers and is more apparent among parents of children with autism or Down syndrome than among parents whose children have cancer. This is attributed to the greater strains experienced by these women in the daily care of children with developmental problems. The results also indicate that chronic strains, stressful life events, and experienced social support affect parental distress in ways that are largely consistent with stress process conceptualizations. Throughout this paper, the findings are linked with recent conceptual and methodological developments in the study of emotional distress and suggest directions for future research.

The article analyzes the process by which emotional strain imposed by the threat of AIDS may manifest itself as psychological distress in a sample of homosexual men. The research examines the extent of the relationship between the perceived threat of AIDS and depression. Also is analyzes how locus of control and social support influence this process. The results of the examination highlighted the role of social support and locus of control. These coping resources were found to be the strongest correlates of depression, and appear to exert a considerable influence on the connections between strain measures and depressive symptomatology.
