BACKGROUND: In order for precision health to address health disparities, engagement of diverse racial/ethnic minority communities and the physicians that serve them is critical. METHODS: A community-based participatory research approach with mixed methods was employed to gain a deeper understanding of precision health research and practice among American Indian, African American, Latino, Chinese, and Vietnamese groups and physicians that serve these communities. A survey assessed demographics and opinions of precision health, genetic testing, and precision health research. Focus groups (n=12) with each racial/ethnic minority group and physicians further explored attitudes about these topics. RESULTS: One hundred community members (American Indian [n=17], African American [n=13], Chinese [n=17], Latino [n=27], and Vietnamese [n=26]) and 14 physicians completed the survey and participated in the focus groups. Familiarity with precision health was low among community members and high among physicians. Most groups were enthusiastic about the approach, especially if it considered influences on health in addition to genes (eg, environmental, behavioral, social factors). Significant concerns were expressed by African American and American Indian participants about precision health practice and research based on past abuses in biomedical research. In addition, physician and community members shared concerns such as security and confidentiality of genetic information, cost and affordability of genetic tests and precision medicine, discrimination and disparities, distrust of medical and research and pharmaceutical institutions, language barriers, and physicians specialty. CONCLUSIONS: Engagement of racial/ethnic minority communities and the providers who serve them is important for advancing a precision health approach to addressing health disparities. more...

Solid tumours are infiltrated by effector T cells with the potential to control or reject them, as well as by regulatory T (Treg) cells that restrict the function of effector T cells and thereby promote tumour growth1. The anti-tumour activity of effector T cells can be therapeutically unleashed, and is now being exploited for the treatment of some forms of human cancer. However, weak tumour-associated inflammatory responses and the immune-suppressive function of Treg cells remain major hurdles to broader effectiveness of tumour immunotherapy2. Here we show that, after disruption of the CARMA1-BCL10-MALT1 (CBM) signalosome complex, most tumour-infiltrating Treg cells produce IFNγ, resulting in stunted tumour growth. Notably, genetic deletion of both or even just one allele of CARMA1 (also known as Card11) in only a fraction of Treg cells-which avoided systemic autoimmunity-was sufficient to produce this anti-tumour effect, showing that it is not the mere loss of suppressive function but the gain of effector activity by Treg cells that initiates tumour control. The production of IFNγ by Treg cells was accompanied by activation of macrophages and upregulation of class I molecules of the major histocompatibility complex on tumour cells. However, tumour cells also upregulated the expression of PD-L1, which indicates activation of adaptive immune resistance3. Consequently, blockade of PD-1 together with CARMA1 deletion caused rejection of tumours that otherwise do not respond to anti-PD-1 monotherapy. This effect was reproduced by pharmacological inhibition of the CBM protein MALT1. Our results demonstrate that partial disruption of the CBM complex and induction of IFNγ secretion in the preferentially self-reactive Treg cell pool does not cause systemic autoimmunity but is sufficient to prime the tumour environment for successful immune checkpoint therapy. more...

Objectives: The contemporary information on the prevalence of periodontitis and associated risk factors is deficient in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Our aim was to measure the prevalence of periodontitis and associated risk factors among the Saudi population in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia who visited the University Dental Hospital. Methods: In this retrospective study, the demographic data and medical and dental records of 700 subjects were examined. Bitewing radiographs were analyzed to measure the alveolar bone loss in posterior teeth by measuring the distance between the cementoenamel junction and the crest of the alveolar bone. A chi-square test was performed to compare the severity of periodontitis. A comparison of multivariate mean bone loss was performed using a t-test. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the predictors of periodontitis. A P-value equal to or under 0.05 reflected statistical significance. Results: Among 700 cases, the patients’ mean age was 35.6 ± 12.1; 52.6 % were male and 47.4 % were female. Overall periodontitis prevalence was 52.1 %. The distribution of mild, moderate, and severe periodontitis prevalence was 36.1 %, 14.1 %, and 1.8 %, respectively. The severity of periodontitis was statistically similar between males and females (p = 0.148); however, significantly more Saudi than non-Saudi patients had moderate periodontitis. Higher proportions of severe periodontitis were seen in the age group of over 50-years-old (p 50 years (OR = 3.73), poor OH status (OR = 2.24), BOP (OR = 3.35), presence of plaque (OR = 2.61), diabetes mellitus (OR = 3.19), and hypertension (OR = 3.62). Conclusion: The primary factors associated with the prevalence of periodontitis were age, nationality, diabetes, hypertension, BOP, plaque, and OH status. However, no association was observed between gender or cardiovascular disease and the prevalence of periodontitis in the studied population. more...

Rural management is a collection of knowledge, information, techniques, and skills that organizes the planning process with the art of management in order to achieve rural development. On the one hand, reviewing this record contains significant points in the methods of village administration, and on the other hand, it is influenced by past experiences, which clarifies various challenges, especially for future use. Rural management is one of the main and inseparable pillars of rural development; because in the absence of organized management in rural areas, development programs will face countless problems. Rural management in Iran has not been able to solve the problems due to the changing conditions, time requirements, and the previous traditional structures of management in rural areas. The new structure of rural management, especially since the 1970s, which is based on people's participation in the affairs and bottom-up planning, due to many reasons, such as not localizing and extensive government intervention, is not fully institutionalized to solve the problems of today's villages. Currently, rural management in Iran is facing issues and problems that require attention from officials and policymakers. These challenges can be found in cases such as lack of explanation of theoretical foundations, lack of rural unit management, lack of stable financial resources, lack of local people's participation, the state of manpower training, access to equipment, tools, and facilities. Based on this, in the present article, while presenting an overview of the changes in the structure of rural management, the pathology of the rural management system in the villages of Ardabil has been studied. The research method is descriptive-analytical, and library, documentary, and data center sources have been used to collect data. The results show that the new rural management needs effective managers who can rely on the will of the people and maintain the social structure and formal and logical relationship with the government, guaranteeing the establishment of a stable relationship between the people and the government, which is part of the management's duty, and be responsible for the transformation in the society. more...

Abstract Rapid and accurate measurement of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2)-specific neutralizing antibodies (nAbs) is paramount for monitoring immunity in infected and vaccinated subjects. The current gold standard relies on pseudovirus neutralization tests which require sophisticated skills and facilities. Alternatively, recent competitive immunoassays measuring anti-SARS-CoV-2 nAbs are proposed as a quick and commercially available surrogate virus neutralization test (sVNT). Here, we report the performance evaluation of three sVNTs, including two ELISA-based assays and an automated bead-based immunoassay for detecting nAbs against SARS-CoV-2. The performance of three sVNTs, including GenScript cPass, Dynamiker, and Mindray NTAb was assessed in samples collected from SARS-CoV-2 infected patients (n = 160), COVID-19 vaccinated individuals (n = 163), and pre-pandemic controls (n = 70). Samples were collected from infected patients and vaccinated individuals 2–24 weeks after symptoms onset or second dose administration. Correlation analysis with pseudovirus neutralization test (pVNT) and immunoassays detecting anti-SARS-CoV-2 binding antibodies was performed. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was generated to assess the optimal threshold for detecting nAbs by each assay. All three sVNTs showed an excellent performance in terms of specificity (100%) and sensitivity (100%, 97.0%, and 97.1% for GenScript, Dynamiker, and Mindray, respectively) in samples collected from vaccinated subjects. GenScript demonstrated the strongest correlation with pVNT (r = 0.743, R2 = 0.552), followed by Mindray (r = 0.718, R2 = 0.515) and Dynamiker (r = 0.608, R2 = 0.369). Correlation with anti-SARS-CoV-2 binding antibodies was variable, but the strongest correlations were observed between anti-RBD IgG antibodies and Mindray (r = 0.952, R2 = 0.907). ROC curve analyses demonstrated excellent performance for all three sVNT assays in both groups, with an AUC ranging between 0.99 and 1.0 (p more...

Purpose – This study contributes to the extant literature on ICT firms by investigating the interrelationship between the health and safety (H&S) measures, market performance, and the coronavirus (COVID-19). Design/methodology/approach – To conduct the confirmatory analysis by testing our hypotheses, data have been collected from Bloomberg of all ICT firms from five countries. The authors gathered from 2010 until 2020 as the research sample to examine the pandemic impact on market performance and H&S measures. Findings – First, our results reveal a significant and positive relationship between market performance (proxied by Tobin’s Q) and the H&S measures of information technology (IT) firms. Second, the authors find that the IT firms have significantly increased the H&S measures during the COVID-19 period and were dynamic in linking employees’ adaptive capabilities to positive attributes. This has contributed to business success, resiliency, and sustainability. Research limitations/implications – The authors used a quantitative method of testing our hypotheses. Future studies may consider checking the robustness using qualitative methods such as structural or semi-structural interviews. Practical implications – The study offers valuable insights to academics, practitioners, stakeholders, policymakers, and international entities by fostering knowledge about responses to crises, integrating digital solutions, and disseminating digital information. The study also has implications on the health, social, business, and economic levels. This study is a call for international and local humanitarian organisations such as United Nations High Commission, Care international and many more to understand the gravity of safety of the workers in the workplace during the pandemic period and introduce a firm-level policy accordingly. Originality/value – This paper is novel considering that the paper is unique in evaluating ICT firms’ market performance and H&S from a global perspective, considering the context of this historical pandemic. more...

Background: Amoebiasis is an intestinal and tissue parasitic infection caused by the protozoan Entamoeba histolytica. Despite significant medical importance and worldwide dispersion, little is known about the epidemiology and distinct geographical distribution of various clinical forms of amoebiasis in the world. In this study, we present an amoebiasis case series referred to Avicenne Hospital (Bobigny, France) from 2010 to 2022 followed by an overview of the released literature to explore diverse clinico-pathology of amoebiasis and to update the actual epidemiological situation of this parasitosis worldwide. Methods: The referred patients underwent a combination of clinical and parasitological examinations and imaging. The study was followed by an overview of released literature performed based on PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guideline. Results: A total of 15 patients with amoebiasis were diagnosed with an average age of 48.5 years old at the occurrence time of infection. Men (78%) were the most affected patients. Most of the cases were reported following a trip to endemic regions, such as Mali, India, Nepal, Algeria, Cameroon or Congo. All of the processed patients exhibited a hepatic amoebiasis. Amoebic abscess was observed in all cases with an average size of 6.3 cm. Of these patients, seven cases (46.7%) benefited from drainage following a risk of rupture or superinfection of the abscess. A compilation of findings extracted from 390 scientific publications via seven major medical databases, allowed us to update the main epidemiological and clinical events that has led to the current worldwide expansion of amoebiasis. We presented a clinical and epidemiological overview of the amoebiasis accompanied with a worldwide illustrative map displaying the current distribution of known amoebiasis foci in each geographical ecozone of Asia, Europe, Africa, Americas, and Australia. Conclusions: Although Metropolitan France is not known as an endemic region of amoebiasis, amoebic liver abscess was the most frequent clinical form observed among our 15 patients processed. Most of infected patients had a history of travel to or lived-in endemic areas before arriving in France. more...

Abstract Objective Expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), a marker of reactive astrocytosis, colocalizes with neuropathology in the brain. Blood levels of GFAP have been associated with cognitive decline and dementia status. However, further examinations at a population‐based level are necessary to broaden generalizability to community settings. Methods Circulating GFAP levels were assayed using a Simoa HD‐1 analyzer in 4338 adults without prevalent dementia from four longitudinal community‐based cohort studies. The associations between GFAP levels with general cognition, total brain volume, and hippocampal volume were evaluated with separate linear regression models in each cohort with adjustment for age, sex, education, race, diabetes, systolic blood pressure, antihypertensive medication, body mass index, apolipoprotein E ε4 status, site, and time between GFAP blood draw and the outcome. Associations with incident all‐cause and Alzheimer's disease dementia were evaluated with adjusted Cox proportional hazard models. Meta‐analysis was performed on the estimates derived from each cohort using random‐effects models. Results Meta‐analyses indicated that higher circulating GFAP associated with lower general cognition (ß = −0.09, [95% confidence interval [CI]: −0.15 to −0.03], p = 0.005), but not with total brain or hippocampal volume (p > 0.05). However, each standard deviation unit increase in log‐transformed GFAP levels was significantly associated with a 2.5‐fold higher risk of incident all‐cause dementia (Hazard Ratio [HR]: 2.47 (95% CI: 1.52–4.01)) and Alzheimer's disease dementia (HR: 2.54 [95% CI: 1.42–4.53]) over up to 15‐years of follow‐up. Interpretation Results support the potential role of circulating GFAP levels for aiding dementia risk prediction and improving clinical trial stratification in community settings. more...

Abstract Background Dyslipidemia is recognized as one of the risk factors of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and non‐alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Objective The study aimed to investigate the association between selected single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with dyslipidemia and increased susceptibility risks of CVD, NAFLD, and/or T2DM in dyslipidemia patients in comparison with healthy control individuals from the Qatar genome project. Methods A community‐based cross‐sectional study was conducted among 2933 adults (859 dyslipidemia patients and 2074 healthy control individuals) from April to December 2021 to investigate the association between 331 selected SNPs with dyslipidemia and increased susceptibility risks of CVD, NAFLD and/or T2DM, and covariates. Results The genotypic frequencies of six SNPs were found to be significantly different in dyslipidemia patients subjects compared to the control group among males and females. In males, three SNPs were found to be significant, the rs11172113 in over‐dominant model, the rs646776 in recessive and over‐dominant models, and the rs1111875 in dominant model. On the other hand, two SNPs were found to be significant in females, including rs2954029 in recessive model, and rs1801251 in dominant and recessive models. The rs17514846 SNP was found for dominant and over‐dominant models among males and only the dominant model for females. We found that the six SNPs linked to gender type had an influence in relation to disease susceptibility. When controlling for the four covariates (gender, obesity, hypertension, and diabetes), the difference between dyslipidemia and the control group remained significant for the six variants. Finally, males were three times more likely to have dyslipidemia in comparison with females, hypertension was two times more likely to be present in the dyslipidemia group, and diabetes was six times more likely to be in the dyslipidemia group. Conclusion The current investigation provides evidence of association for a common SNP to coronary heart disease and suggests a sex‐dependent effect and encourage potential therapeutic applications. more...

BackgroundPimavanserin, a serotonin 5HT-2A receptor inverse agonist is the first-line, FDA-approved treatment of hallucinations and delusions associated with Parkinson’s Disease psychosis (PDP), which occurs in up to 50% of PD patients. The neurobiological mechanism underlying the therapeutic effectiveness of Pimavanserin in PDP remains unknown. Several earlier studies have shown that treatment with 5HT-2A antagonists and other drugs acting on the serotonergic system such as SSRIs increase Brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels in rodents. BDNF is synthesized as the precursor proBDNF, that undergoes cleavage intra or extracellularly to produce a mature BDNF (mBDNF) protein. mBDNF is believed to play a key role in neuroplasticity and neurogenesis. The present study tested the hypothesis that treatment with Pimavanserin is associated with higher and sustained elevations of mBDNF.MethodsAdult Sprague–Dawley male rats were treated with Pimavanserin, Fluoxetine or vehicle for 4 weeks (chronic) or 2 h (acute). BDNF levels were determined by enzyme-linked Immunosorbent assay (ELISA).ResultsWe found significant increases in plasma mBDNF levels in rats following chronic Pimavanserin treatment, but not in Fluoxetine-treated rats. No significant changes in mBDNF levels were found in the prefrontal cortex or hippocampus following Pimavanserin or Fluoxetine treatment.ConclusionThese findings suggest that increase in mBDNF levels could be a contributing mechanism for the neuroprotective potential of Pimavanserin. more...

Several phenomenological approaches to quantum gravity predict the existence of a minimal measurable length and/or a maximum measurable momentum near the Planck scale. When embedded into the framework of quantum mechanics, such constraints induce a modification of the canonical commutation relations and thus a generalization of the Heisenberg uncertainty relations, commonly referred to as generalized uncertainty principle (GUP). Different models of quantum gravity imply different forms of the GUP. For instance, in the framework of string theory the GUP is quadratic in the momentum operator, while in the context of doubly special relativity it includes an additional linear dependence. Among the possible physical consequences, it was recently shown that the quadratic GUP induces a universal decoherence mechanism, provided one assumes a foamy structure of quantum spacetime close to the Planck length. Along this line, in the present work we investigate the gravitational decoherence associated to the linear-quadratic GUP and we compare it with the one associated to the quadratic GUP. We find that, despite their similarities, the two generalizations of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle yield decoherence times that are completely uncorrelated and significantly distinct. Motivated by this result, we introduce a theoretical and experimental scheme based on cavity optomechanics to measure the different time evolution of nonlocal quantum correlations corresponding to the two aforementioned decoherence mechanisms. We find that the deviation between the two predictions occurs on time scales that are macroscopic and thus potentially amenable to experimental verification. This scenario provides a possible setting to discriminate between different forms of the GUP and therefore different models of quantum gravity. more...

For the successful production of NiO/NiCo2O4 nanocomposites, the environmentally friendly method of egg white supplementation has been used. Several analytical techniques were employed to characterize the morphology, purity, and crystal structure of the as-prepared nanocomposites. These techniques included transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The physical adsorption and magnetic properties of the investigated composite were determined using the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method and a vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM), respectively. The results have shown that the as-prepared composite particles had diameters of about 10–25 nm, with uniform distribution. The XRD analysis showed that the as-synthesized composites consisted entirely of cubic structures of both NiO and spinel NiCo2O4 nanoparticles, with a space group of Fd3m. The FTIR analysis showed characteristic vibration modes related to metal oxides, confirming the formation of composites containing NiO and NiCo2O4 crystallites. The investigated composites’ saturation magnetization (MS) and coercivity (HC) were easily controllable because of the ingredients’ ferromagnetic (NiCo2O4) and antiferromagnetic (NiO) characteristics. The excellent combination of the NiO/NiCo2O4 nanocomposites’ properties is anticipated to make this system suitable for a wide range of applications. more...

An entirely novel and creative technique was employed for producing magnetic Ni–NiO@C nanocomposites, and it was based on the utilization different amounts of finely ground and fully dried olive leaf powders. The resulting nanocomposites were identified and characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, EDS, TEM, and Raman techniques. The magnetic and surface characteristics of the composites, as it developed, were further evaluated using the Vibrating-Sample Magnetometer (VSM) and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) techniques. The results confirmed the success of preparing a Ni–NiO@C nanocomposites, each containing Ni and NiO in crystalline form. Through the morphology of the resulting composites, determined on the basis of an SEM analysis, it became clear to us that the particles were of a semi-spherical shape, with a clear grouping and a definition of their grain boundaries. Comparably, a TEM investigation demonstrated that the composites had a core–shell structure. The surface area of the investigated composites increases as the content of dried olive leaf powders increases due to a significant increase in the total pore volume. These composites illustrated low magnetism (4.874 and 8.648 emu/g) and coercivity (55.203 and 39.639 Oe) for a number of reasons, which will be explained. more...

- Abstract
Background: COVID-19 is primarily known as a respiratory illness; however, many patients present to hospital without respiratory symptoms. The association between non-respiratory presentations of COVID-19 and outcomes remains unclear. We investigated risk factors and clinical outcomes in patients with no respiratory symptoms (NRS) and respiratory symptoms (RS) at hospital admission. Methods: This study describes clinical features, physiological parameters, and outcomes of hospitalised COVID-19 patients, stratified by the presence or absence of respiratory symptoms at hospital admission. RS patients had one or more of: cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, runny nose or wheezing; while NRS patients did not. Results: Of 178,640 patients in the study, 86.4 % presented with RS, while 13.6 % had NRS. NRS patients were older (median age: NRS: 74 vs RS: 65) and less likely to be admitted to the ICU (NRS: 36.7 % vs RS: 37.5 %). NRS patients had a higher crude in-hospital case-fatality ratio (NRS 41.1 % vs. RS 32.0 %), but a lower risk of death after adjusting for confounders (HR 0.88 [0.83–0.93]). Conclusion: Approximately one in seven COVID-19 patients presented at hospital admission without respiratory symptoms. These patients were older, had lower ICU admission rates, and had a lower risk of in-hospital mortality after adjusting for confounders. more...

- Abstract
BACKGROUND: Outcome measures are crucial to support a treat-to-target approach to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) care, yet their integration into clinical practice remains inconsistent. We developed an Electronic Heath Record-integrated, patient-facing side-car application to display RA outcomes (disease activity, functional status, pain scores), medications, and lab results during clinical visits (RA PRO Dashboard). The study aimed to evaluate patient perceptions and attitudes towards the implementation of a novel patient-facing dashboard during clinical visits using a mixed-methods approach. METHODS: RA patients whose clinicians used the dashboard at least once during their clinical visit were invited to complete a survey regarding its usefulness in care. We also conducted semi-structured interviews with a subset of patients to assess their perceptions of the dashboard. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed thematically using deductive and inductive techniques. Emerging themes and subthemes were organized into four domains of the Ecological Model of Health. RESULTS: Out of 173 survey respondents, 79% were interested in seeing the dashboard again at a future visit, 71% felt it improved their understanding of their disease, and 65% believed it helped with decision-making about their RA care. Many patients reported that the dashboard helped them discuss their RA symptoms (76%) and medications (72%) with their clinician. Interviews with 29 RA patients revealed 10 key themes: the dashboard was perceived as a valuable visual tool that improved patients understanding of RA outcome measures, enhanced their involvement in care, and increased their trust in clinicians and the clinic. Common reported limitations included concerns about reliability of RA outcome questionnaires for some RA patients and inconsistent collection and explanation of these measures by clinicians. CONCLUSIONS: In both the quantitative and qualitative components of the study, patients more...

- Abstract
BACKGROUND: Improving shared decision-making using a treat-to-target approach, including the use of clinical outcome measures, is important to providing high quality care for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We developed an Electronic Health Record (EHR) integrated, patient-facing sidecar dashboard application that displays RA outcomes, medications, and lab results for use during clinical visits (RA PRO dashboard). The purpose of this study was to assess clinician perceptions and experiences using the dashboard in a university rheumatology clinic. METHODS: We conducted focus group (FG) discussions with clinicians who had access to the dashboard as part of a randomized, stepped-wedge pragmatic trial. FGs explored clinician perceptions towards the usability, acceptability, and usefulness of the dashboard. FG data were analyzed thematically using deductive and inductive techniques; generated themes were categorized into the domains of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). RESULTS: 3 FG discussions were conducted with a total of 13 clinicians. Overall, clinicians were enthusiastic about the dashboard and expressed the usefulness of visualizing RA outcome trajectories in a graphical format for motivating patients, enhancing patient understanding of their RA outcomes, and improving communication about medications. Major themes that emerged from the FG analysis as barriers to using the dashboard included inconsistent collection of RA outcomes leading to sparse data in the dashboard and concerns about explaining RA outcomes, especially to patients with fibromyalgia. Other challenges included time constraints and technical difficulties refreshing the dashboard to display real-time data. Methods for integrating the dashboard into the visit varied: some clinicians used the dashboard at the beginning of the visit as they documented RA outcomes; others used it at the end to justify changes to therapy; and a few shared it only with stable patients. CONCLUSIONS: The study provides valu more...

Computer Science - Networking and Internet Architecture - Abstract
Many network applications, e.g., industrial control, demand Ultra-Low Latency (ULL). However, traditional packet networks can only reduce the end-to-end latencies to the order of tens of milliseconds. The IEEE 802.1 Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) standard and related research studies have sought to provide link layer support for ULL networking, while the emerging IETF Deterministic Networking (DetNet) standards seek to provide the complementary network layer ULL support. This article provides an up-to-date comprehensive survey of the IEEE TSN and IETF DetNet standards and the related research studies. The survey of these standards and research studies is organized according to the main categories of flow concept, flow synchronization, flow management, flow control, and flow integrity. ULL networking mechanisms play a critical role in the emerging fifth generation (5G) network access chain from wireless devices via access, backhaul, and core networks. We survey the studies that specifically target the support of ULL in 5G networks, with the main categories of fronthaul, backhaul, and network management. Throughout, we identify the pitfalls and limitations of the existing standards and research studies. This survey can thus serve as a basis for the development of standards enhancements and future ULL research studies that address the identified pitfalls and limitations. more...

Background: Pre-operative kidney disease was shown to impact peri-operative outcomes of endoscopic BPH surgeries. We aim to assess the effect of novel surgical techniques (Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (LEP) and Laser Vaporization of the Prostate (LVP)) compared to Transurethral Resection of Prostate (TURP), on post-operative outcomes stratified based on kidney function. Methods: The ACS-NSQIP database was reviewed from 2008 to 2021 for 83,020 patients that underwent TURP, LEP, and LVP. Pre-operative variables were compared across kidney function groups: G1(normal/high function); G2-G3(mild/moderate kidney disease); and G4-G5(severe kidney disease). Multivariate logistic regression was performed on 30-day peri-operative complications adjusting for pre-operative variables. Propensity score matching was done between LEP and LVP to TURP. Results: LEP showed a protective effect against UTIs (p < 0.05) in the G1 and G2-G3 categories but lost that protective effect in the G4-G5 category when compared to TURP. It had longer operative time (p < 0.05) across all kidney function groups, and demonstrated shorter hospital stay (p < 0.05) in the G1 and G2-G3 categories compared to TURP. LVP had a persistent protective effect against bleeding (p < 0.05) across all kidney function groups and shorter hospital stay (p < 0.05) when compared to TURP. LVP had a protective effect against return to OR (p < 0.05) in the G1 and G2-G3 kidney function group but lost that protective effect in the G4-G5 category. LVP had significant protective effect against thromboembolic events (p < 0.05) in the G2-G3 category and against cardiac complications (p < 0.05) in the G4-G5 category. Conclusion: LEP and LVP are superior to TURP in terms of post-operative complications. The type of endoscopic surgery technique should be tailored according to patient's pre-operative kidney status and risk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...

Malaria, though witnessing a decline in prevalence, remains a global health threat. Despite its primarily recognized impact on the hematological system, recent studies shed light on severe cardiac complications, particularly myocarditis, associated with Plasmodium infections. This review examines the literature on malaria-induced myocarditis to elucidate its mechanisms, clinical manifestations, regional perspectives, treatment outcomes, and diagnostic challenges. A literature search spanning PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science identified relevant studies up to January 2024, encompassing case reports, cohort studies, clinical trials, and experimental studies. The relationship between severe malaria and myocardial involvement is explored, showcasing elevated biomarkers indicative of myocardial damage. Notably, while Plasmodium falciparum is traditionally linked to malaria-induced myocarditis, instances of Plasmodium vivax contributing to cardiac complications are documented. Regional perspectives reveal diverse cases, emphasizing the importance of considering malaria-induced myocarditis in endemic regions and beyond. Treatment outcomes underscore the efficacy of timely antimalarial therapy, advocating for integrated approaches to patient care. Diagnostic challenges, often complicated by overlapping symptoms with other cardiac conditions, highlight the need for heightened clinical suspicion. Addressing therapeutic challenges involves balancing antimalarial drugs, supportive care, and long-term monitoring. Future research directions are outlined, emphasizing the necessity for understanding host-parasite interactions, elucidating molecular mechanisms, and developing targeted diagnostic tools. This review consolidates the current knowledge on malaria-induced myocarditis, emphasizing the significance of continuous vigilance, research, and improved diagnostic approaches to mitigate the impact of this overlooked complication. In this paper, we discuss the existence and uniqueness of a solution for the implicit two-order fractional integro-differential equation with m-point boundary conditions by applying the Banach fixed point theorem. Moreover, in the paper we establish the four different varieties of Ulam stability (Hyers–Ulam stability, generalized Hyers–Ulam stability, Hyers–Ulam-Rassias stability, and generalized Hyers–Ulam–Rassias stability) for the given problem. CARDIAC magnetic resonance imaging ,CEREBRAL infarction ,LEFT heart atrium ,CARDIOVASCULAR diseases risk factors ,BLOOD flow - Abstract
Background: Left atrial (LA) myopathy is thought to be associated with silent brain infarctions (SBI) through changes in blood flow hemodynamics leading to thrombogenesis. 4D‐flow MRI enables in‐vivo hemodynamic quantification in the left atrium (LA) and LA appendage (LAA). Purpose: To determine whether LA and LAA hemodynamic and volumetric parameters are associated with SBI. Study Type: Prospective observational study. Population: A single‐site cohort of 125 Participants of the multiethnic study of atherosclerosis (MESA), mean age: 72.3 ± 7.2 years, 56 men. Field Strength/Sequence: 1.5T. Cardiac MRI: Cine balanced steady state free precession (bSSFP) and 4D‐flow sequences. Brain MRI: T1‐ and T2‐weighted SE and FLAIR. Assessment: Presence of SBI was determined from brain MRI by neuroradiologists according to routine diagnostic criteria in all participants without a history of stroke based on the MESA database. Minimum and maximum LA volumes and ejection fraction were calculated from bSSFP data. Blood stasis (% of voxels <10 cm/sec) and peak velocity (cm/sec) in the LA and LAA were assessed by a radiologist using an established 4D‐flow workflow. Statistical Tests: Student's t test, Mann–Whitney U test, one‐way ANOVA, chi‐square test. Multivariable stepwise logistic regression with automatic forward and backward selection. Significance level P < 0.05. Results: 26 (20.8%) had at least one SBI. After Bonferroni correction, participants with SBI were significantly older and had significantly lower peak velocities in the LAA. In multivariable analyses, age (per 10‐years) (odds ratio (OR) = 1.99 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.30–3.04)) and LAA peak velocity (per cm/sec) (OR = 0.87 (95% CI: 0.81–0.93)) were significantly associated with SBI. Conclusion: Older age and lower LAA peak velocity were associated with SBI in multivariable analyses whereas volumetric‐based measures from cardiac MRI or cardiovascular risk factors were not. Cardiac 4D‐flow MRI showed potential to serve as a novel imaging marker for SBI. Level of Evidence: 3 Technical Efficacy: Stage 2 [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...

A new QCD sum rule determination of the leading order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $a_{\mu}^{\rm hvp}$, is proposed. This approach combines data on $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation into hadrons, perturbative QCD and lattice QCD results for the first derivative of the electromagnetic current correlator at zero momentum transfer, $\Pi_{\rm EM}^\prime(0)$. The idea is based on the observation that, in the relevant kinematic domain, the integration kernel $K(s)$, entering the formula relating $a_{\mu}^{\rm hvp}$ to $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation data, behaves like $1/s$ times a very smooth function of $s$, the squared energy. We find an expression for $a_{\mu}$ in terms of $\Pi_{\rm EM}^\prime(0)$, which can be calculated in lattice QCD. Using recent lattice results we find a good approximation for $a_{\mu}^{\rm hvp}$, but the precision is not yet sufficient to resolve the discrepancy between the $R(s)$ data-based results and the experimentally measured value., Comment: 14 pages, added some clarifying text and two references, removed typos, results unchanged. Background: Table tennis athletes have been extensively studied for their cognitive processing advantages and brain plasticity. However, limited research has focused on the resting-state function of their brains. This study aims to investigate the network characteristics of the resting-state electroencephalogram in table tennis athletes and identify specific brain network biomarkers. Methods: A total of 48 healthy right-handed college students participated in this study, including 24 table tennis athletes and 24 controls with no exercise experience. Electroencephalogram data were collected using a 64-conductive active electrode system during eyes-closed resting conditions. The analysis involved examining the average power spectral density and constructing brain functional networks using the weighted phase-lag index. Network topological characteristics were then calculated. Results: The results revealed that table tennis athletes exhibited significantly higher average power spectral density in the α band compared to the control group. Moreover, athletes not only demonstrated stronger functional connections, but they also exhibited enhanced transmission efficiency in the brain network, particularly at the local level. Additionally, a lateralization effect was observed, with more potent interconnected hubs identified in the left hemisphere of the athletes’ brain. Conclusions: Our findings imply that the α band may be uniquely associated with table tennis athletes and their motor skills. The brain network characteristics of athletes during the resting state are worth further attention to gain a better understanding of adaptability of and changes in their brains during training and competition. more...
