- Abstract
Samples of sound dental enamel were treated with topical applications of a 10% solution of stannous fluoride and then demineralized using acetate buffer (pH 4.0) and EDTA (pH 8.0) for varying periods of time. Nonfluoridated enamel treated for equivalent periods with the acetate buffer and with the EDTA, as well as untreated enamel, served as controls. A scanning electron microscope comparison of the surface alterations produced within the different groups revealed that: the in-virto application of stannous fluoride solutions inhibited enamel surface alterations when challenged by an acid or chelating agent. This finding adds further support to the concept that fluoride protection involves a reduction in enamel solubility. In addition, there was suggestive evidence that fluorides possibly play a role in the remineralization or repair or early etched enamel defects by the formation of a fluoride complex which may involve the less mineralized enamel matrix components.
