ABSTRACTThe majority of the Northwest Territories of mainland Canada was covered by the Laurentide Ice Sheet during the Last Glacial Maximum. The increasing coverage of high resolution remotely sensed data provides new opportunities to map the glacial geomorphology and study the glacial history of this remote location. Here we present a comprehensive map of glacial landforms within the northern Interior Plains and adjacent areas of the Canadian Shield, comprising around 6% of the Laurentide Ice Sheet bed. Twelve landform types were mapped from the high resolution ArcticDEM: ice flow parallel lineations, subglacial ribs, crevasse-squeeze ridges, major and minor moraine crests, hummocky terrain complexes and ridges, shear margin moraines, major, minor and lateral and submarginal meltwater channels, esker ridges and complexes, glaciofluvial complexes, perched deltas, raised shorelines and aeolian dunes. Together, these landforms provide a record of the highly dynamic behaviour of the northwest sector of the Laurentide Ice Sheet.

Abstract Magnetic pore fabrics (MPFs) are a promising approach to explore the 3D pore space of rocks. There exist empirical relationships between the orientation, degree, and shape of MPF with pore space geometry and permeability anisotropy. Nevertheless, the precise nature of these relationships remains elusive. A common assumption in MPF studies is that ferrofluid uniformly fills the pore space, establishing a constant nanoparticle density and magnetic properties in space and time. However, this assumption is challenged by observations of particle sedimentation and time‐dependent magnetic properties, which render the quantitative interpretation of MPFs challenging. This study explores the physical and chemical stability of ferrofluid, mobility of particles after impregnation, and the magnetic properties of impregnated rocks over time. Water‐based ferrofluids are physically more stable than oil‐based ferrofluids, though with higher magnetic variability. In impregnated rock, magnetic nanoparticles display a certain degree of mobility, resulting in changes in MPF degree and shape. When ferrofluid is mixed with epoxy, particles are less mobile, though some changes were observed both during polymerization and aging. The susceptibility of ferrofluid‐epoxy mixtures is lower than for ferrofluid and carrier liquid at the same concentration. Interestingly, the susceptibility of impregnated rock increases over time, regardless of the ferrofluid used for the impregnation. Understanding and controlling these processes will enhance the reliability of MPF interpretations and increase the applicability of the method.

Spravato and other drugs with consciousness-altering effects show significant promise for treating various mental health disorders. However, the effects of these treatments necessitate a substantial degree of patient monitoring which can be burdensome to healthcare providers and may make these treatments less accessible for prospective patients. Continuous passive monitoring via digital devices may be useful in reducing this burden. This proof-of-concept study tested the MindMed Session Monitoring System™ (MSMS™), a continuous passive monitoring system intended for use during treatment sessions involving pharmaceutical products with consciousness-altering effects. Participants completed 129 Spravato sessions with MSMS at an outpatient psychiatry clinic specializing in Spravato treatment. Results indicated high rates of data quality and self-reported usability among participants and health care providers (HCPs). These findings demonstrate the potential for systems such as MSMS to be used in consciousness-altering treatment sessions to assist with patient monitoring.

Background Research on cigarettes and adult asthma offers mixed findings, perhaps due to overlap with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and inadequate adjustment for other smoke exposures. Associations between other tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, and asthma are also understudied.Research question Using Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study waves 2–4 (2014/2015–2016/2017) data, we assessed the relation between tobacco product use and asthma in persons unlikely to have COPD.Study design and methods Prospective study of 10 267 adults aged 18–39 years without COPD diagnoses. Past-month tobacco use at wave 2 was modelled first as combustible versus non-combustible use and second as specific product categories (former, cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, hookah, smokeless tobacco). Outcomes included lifetime asthma prevalence at wave 2, incidence (waves 3 and 4) and Asthma Control Test score (lower=worse). Multivariable regressions adjusted for predictors of asthma, including other smoke exposures: cigarette pack-years, secondhand smoke and marijuana use. Sensitivity analyses examined findings when persons >39 years and those with both COPD and asthma were added, and when smoke exposure adjustments were removed.Results No product, including cigarettes and e-cigarettes, was associated with prevalence or incidence of asthma. Among people with asthma at wave 2, combustible tobacco (beta=−0.86, 95% CI (−1.32 to –0.39)) and cigarettes (beta=−1.14, 95% CI (−1.66 to –0.62)) were associated with worse asthma control. No tobacco product was associated with asthma control over time. In sensitivity analyses, tobacco use became associated with incident asthma as adults >39 years and those with asthma+COPD were added, and as adjustments for other smoke exposures were omitted.Interpretation Although cigarette use was associated with worse asthma control, there were no longitudinal associations between combustible tobacco or e-cigarette use and new onset or worsening asthma in these preliminary analyses. Research on tobacco and asthma should exclude COPD and adjust for smoking history and other smoke exposures.

Abstrak. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk memperoleh deskripsi kemampuan pemahaman konsep matematis ditinjau dari gaya belajar siswa kelas XI IPA SMA Negeri 1 Tirtayasa. Background. This retrospective study examines the relationship between admission Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) levels and clinical outcomes in patients with sepsis from two separate cohorts in the Czech Republic and the United States. Methods. The study included 9126 patients with sepsis between January 2014 and December 2018. Kaplan-Meier survival curves and Cox regression were used to analyse the data. An optimal cut-off was calculated by means of the Youden-Index. Results. BUN at ICU admission was categorized as 10-20, 20-40 and >40 mg/dL. Abstract SARS-CoV-2 continues to circulate in the human population necessitating regular booster immunization for its long-term control. Ideally, vaccines should ideally not only protect against symptomatic disease, but also prevent transmission via asymptomatic shedding and cover existing and future variants of the virus. This may ultimately only be possible through induction of potent and long-lasting immune responses in the nasopharyngeal tract, the initial entry site of SARS-CoV-2. To this end, we have designed a vaccine based on recombinantly expressed receptor binding domain (RBD) of SARS-CoV-2, fused to the C-terminus of C. perfringens enterotoxin, which is known to target Claudin-4, a matrix molecule highly expressed on mucosal microfold (M) cells of the nasal and bronchial-associated lymphoid tissues. To further enhance immune responses, the vaccine was adjuvanted with a novel toll-like receptor 3/RIG-I agonist (Riboxxim™), consisting of synthetic short double stranded RNA. Intranasal prime-boost immunization of mice induced robust mucosal and systemic anti-SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibody responses against SARS-CoV-2 strains Wuhan-Hu-1, and several variants (B.1.351/beta, B.1.1.7/alpha, B.1.617.2/delta), as well as systemic T-cell responses. A combination vaccine with M-cell targeted recombinant HA1 from an H1N1 G4 influenza strain also induced mucosal and systemic antibodies against influenza. Taken together, the data show that development of an intranasal SARS-CoV-2 vaccine based on recombinant RBD adjuvanted with a TLR3 agonist is feasible, also as a combination vaccine against influenza.

Abstract How does urban expansion interact with pastoral climate change adaptation? This article explores pastoral adaptation strategies at the rural-urban interface. It examines how Maasai pastoralists in peri-urban Nairobi, Kenya, respond to climate hazards in the context of urban expansion, land use change, and land privatisation. Using mixed-method research, the study is informed by a household survey (n = 72), 38 qualitative interviews, and 12 focus group discussions. Drawing on the literature on climate change adaptation, pastoral change, and peri-urban dynamics, we find that while urban expansion provides significant challenges for pastoral livelihoods in the study area, pastoralists also engage new opportunities in the peri-urban context and employ them in their adaptation strategies. We show how adaptation strategies related to mobility, diversification, market exchange, and storage are employed through a variety of efforts including engagement with urban land markets and demand for livestock products, and by capitalising on proximity to transport, trading facilities, water, and commercial fodder. Communal pooling, another adaptation strategy, is less used and perceived to be in decline. We further find that historical land ownership patterns play a significant role in adaptation strategies, as pastoralists who have benefitted from rangeland privatisation are able to convert high peri-urban land values into private rural land access and investments in, e.g. diversification. Poor households are in a more precarious position but draw on informal agreements to access land as part of their adaptation strategies. Our findings highlight how pastoral households at the rural-urban interface may draw actively on peri-urban opportunities in their adaptation strategies as part of their efforts to enhance livelihoods, and in so doing bridge peri-urban and rural space. More broadly, our study highlights the importance of understanding pastoral climate change adaptation in the context of wider changes in livelihoods, land use, and land rights, rather than as isolated actions. Abstract Background Massive amounts of data are produced by combining next-generation sequencing with complex biochemistry techniques to characterize regulatory genomics profiles, such as protein–DNA interaction and chromatin accessibility. Interpretation of such high-throughput data typically requires different computation methods. However, existing tools are usually developed for a specific task, which makes it challenging to analyze the data in an integrative manner. Results We here describe the Regulatory Genomics Toolbox (RGT), a computational library for the integrative analysis of regulatory genomics data. RGT provides different functionalities to handle genomic signals and regions. Based on that, we developed several tools to perform distinct downstream analyses, including the prediction of transcription factor binding sites using ATAC-seq data, identification of differential peaks from ChIP-seq data, and detection of triple helix mediated RNA and DNA interactions, visualization, and finding an association between distinct regulatory factors. Conclusion We present here RGT; a framework to facilitate the customization of computational methods to analyze genomic data for specific regulatory genomics problems. RGT is a comprehensive and flexible Python package for analyzing high throughput regulatory genomics data and is available at: https://github.com/CostaLab/reg-gen . In demography, mortality modeling with respect to age and time dimensions is often associated with the traditionally used Lee-Carter model. The Lee-Carter model considers a constant set of parameters of agespecific mortality change for forecasts, which can lead to the problem of overcoming the biodemographic limit. The main motivation of this paper is the use of more flexible models for mortality modeling. The paper explores the use of state space models for modeling and predicting mortality in a form not typically used in demography. In this context, it is a generalized Poisson state space model with overdispersion parameters. Concerning the empirical results, a comparison is made between the predictive abilities of the Lee-Carter and the generalized Poisson state space model with overdispersion parameters. The state space Poisson model with overdispersion parameters led to better results with respect to the comparison of modeled and historical observations. However, when comparing the predictions in the cross-validation area, both models were represented with similar overall mean squared error.

The laparoscopic fundoplication has proven to be the standard technique of antireflux surgery and hiatal hernia (HH) repair over the last decade. However, robot-assisted surgery is more and more implemented in daily practice. Several studies have proven the feasibility and safety of robot-assisted HH repair and antireflux surgery. Both approaches seem to be similar regarding perioperative and postoperative complications, length of hospital stay, postoperative symptoms, and quality of life, as well as objective assessment of gastric acid exposure. Nevertheless, high total costs as well as a considerably longer total operating time of robot-assisted surgery need to be considered. The role of robot-assisted surgery in complex cases is promising but needs to be evaluated. Eventually, the decision regarding the technique used should be based on the surgeon’s discretion and experience.

Abstract Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) is a molecular and functional imaging modality with better restaging accuracy over conventional imaging for detecting prostate cancer in men suspected of lymph node (LN) progression after definitive therapy. However, the availability of PSMA PET/CT is limited in both low-resource settings and for repeating imaging surveillance. In contrast, CT is widely available, cost-effective, and routinely performed as part of patient follow-up or radiotherapy workflow. Compared with the molecular activities, the morphological and texture changes of subclinical LNs in CT are subtle, making manual detection of positive LNs infeasible. Instead, we harness the power of artificial intelligence for automated LN detection on CT. Genetic information is stored in very long DNA molecules, which are folded to form chromatin, a similarly long polymer fibre that is ultimately organised into chromosomes. The organisation of chromatin is fundamental to many cellular functions, from the expression of the genetic information to cell division. As a long polymer, chromatin is very flexible and may adopt a myriad of shapes. Globally, the polymer physics governing chromatin dynamics is very well understood. But chromatin is not uniform and regions of it, with chemical modifications and bound effectors, form domains and compartments through mechanisms not yet clear. Polymer models have been successfully used to investigate these mechanisms to explain cytological observations and build hypothesis for experimental validation. Many different approaches to conceptualise chromatin in polymer models can be envisioned and each reflects different aspects. Here, we compare recent approaches that aim at reproducing prominent features of interphase chromatin organisation: the compartmentalisation into eu- and heterochromatin compartments, the formation of a nucleolus, chromatin loops and the rosette and Rabl conformations of interphase chromosomes. We highlight commonalities and contradictions that point to a modulation of the mechanisms involved to fine degree. Consolidating models will require the inclusion of yet hidden or neglected parameters.

Abstract Background Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a progressive syndrome affecting gait, incontinence, and cognition in a significant number of older adults. Still, prospective studies on early development of symptoms are scarce. Aim To investigate how neuropsychological functions develop before and in already diagnosed iNPH over a two-year period in a population-based material. Method A sample of 104 participants (median [IQR] 75 [72–80] years old) from the general population underwent CT-imaging and clinical assessment at baseline and follow-up. Abstract Concerns have been raised regarding a potentially increased risk of cancer associated with treatment with glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. Here, we explored whether fasting and oral glucose tolerance test post-challenge glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide (GIP) and GLP-1 levels were associated with incident first cancer. Within the cardiovascular re-examination arm of the population-based Malmö Diet Cancer study (n = 3734), 685 participants with a previous cancer diagnosis were excluded, resulting in 3049 participants (mean age 72.2 ± 5.6 years, 59.5% women), of whom 485 were diagnosed with incident first cancer (median follow-up time 9.9 years). Multivariable Cox-regression and competing risk regression (death as competing risk) were used to explore associations between incretin levels and incident first cancer. Higher levels of fasting GLP-1 (462 incident first cancer cases/2417 controls) showed lower risk of incident first cancer in competing risk regression (sub-hazard ratio 0.90; 95% confidence interval 0.82–0.99; p = 0.022). No association was seen for fasting GIP, post-challenge GIP, or post-challenge GLP-1 and incident first cancer. In this prospective study, none of the fasting and post-challenge levels of GIP and GLP-1 were associated with higher risk of incident first cancer; by contrast, higher levels of fasting GLP-1 were associated with lower risk of incident first cancer.

Abstract Background This study aimed to explore residents’ and teachers’ perceptions of the digital format of Metis (a national education network in Sweden) didactic courses for psychiatry residents in Sweden to guide post-pandemic curriculum development. Methods An online attitude survey was developed and sent out to 725 residents in psychiatry and 237 course directors/teachers. Data were examined descriptively and group differences were analysed with independent sample t-tests. Results The survey was completed by 112 residents and 72 course directors/teachers. Perceptions of digital formats were quite similar between the two groups with some significant differences i.e., residents agreed more strongly than directors/teachers with the statement that Metis courses in digital format were of the same quality (or better) than the classroom-based format. Residents perceived the positive effects of using interactive tools more than directors/teachers. More than 40% of the responders in both groups preferred a return to classroom-based course meetings. Responders in both groups suggested that different forms of digital elements (e.g., video-based and sound-recorded lectures, digital-group discussions, virtual patients) could be incorporated into different phases in the courses. Conclusions The study represents the current largest survey among residents in psychiatry and a teaching faculty in Sweden, to understand the impact of digitalization on the quality of residents’ education during the pandemic. The results point towards applying a mixed format for training and education going forward, incorporating digital aspects into the national curriculum.

In order to increase scientific competence within the general population, it is important that teachers and educators have a realistic image of science and scientists, leaving aside superstitions and pseudoscientific claims that could be transmitted to their students. A starting point in this strategy is to make a good diagnosis of the future teachers' perceptions of science and technology. To this end, in this paper, we present a survey conducted with 383 Spanish university students, training to become schoolteachers. We focused on their interest in science and technology and their degree of trust in false beliefs and pseudoscience. The results are analysed and compared with those of a group of similar age and educational background that have answered a general population survey. It was found that, although the interest in science and technology and the trust in scientists is higher in pre-service teachers than in the general population, their level of belief in pseudoscientific issues is comparable, or even higher in some cases to those of the general population. The results show that these false beliefs are independent of the interest that future teachers show in science and technology. The presence of such beliefs among pre-service teachers should be a source of reflection, since these may be part of the hidden curriculum that they will transmit to their students. We need to consider linear heat losses due to thermal bridges for the accurate calculation of building heat losses. Our research examined a whole building, and different thermal bridge calculation methods were compared. The following techniques were included in the study: a simplified method according to the Hungarian energy performance regulation where the effect of thermal bridges can be taken into account by multiplication factors applicable to thermal transmittances; a simplified thermal bridge catalogue of ISO 14683; a recent national thermal bridge catalogue; two-dimensional thermal modelling as well as a conjugated heat and moisture (HAM) simulation considering steady-state and dynamic conditions. Overall, we created eight different numerical modelling approaches depending on the type of simulation and boundary condition. The modelling and simulations were carried out using multiphysics software based on the finite element method according to ISO 10211 and EN 15026. All the relevant details of the building were analysed to get a complete picture. Based on the results, we analysed each method's relative proportions of surface and linear heat losses. The evaluation showed that the Hungarian simplified method generated the lowest heat losses for thermal bridges, while ISO 14683 produced the highest results, with the numerically simulated results in the middle. The overall heat losses varied by 30 %, depending on the thermal bridge calculation method. Linear heat losses were between 12 % to 32 % of the surface heat losses. Our study helps to choose the adequate method to perform thermal bridge simulations.

The method for the production of PRF (Platelet Rich Fibrin) was developed in 2000 and belongs to the second generation of platelet concentrates. Several clinical studies have demonstrated its effectiveness in combination with various bone substitutes. The concentrate is prepared by centrifuging the patient's own blood without addition of anticoagulants, and according to the established protocol. The process yields a fibrin-rich clot of leukocytes and platelets that serves as an extracellular matrix. The growth factors from white blood cells and platelets are released slowly (2–3 weeks), and thus, have a beneficial effect on the wound healing. In this article, the authors present their review of the data available in the main literature and report on potential applications of PRF in dental, dentoalveolar, and maxillofacial surgeries (implantology, bone grafting, dentoalveolar surgery, periodontology, sinus closure, sinus elevation, osteonecrosis, endodontics).

Abstract Historical documents contain essential information about the past, including places, people, or events. Many of these valuable cultural artifacts cannot be further examined due to aging or external influences, as they are too fragile to be opened or turned over, so their rich contents remain hidden. Terahertz (THz) imaging is a nondestructive 3D imaging technique that can be used to reveal the hidden contents without damaging the documents. As noise or imaging artifacts are predominantly present in reconstructed images processed by standard THz reconstruction algorithms, this work intends to improve THz image quality with deep learning. To overcome the data scarcity problem in training a supervised deep learning model, an unsupervised deep learning network (CycleGAN) is first applied to generate paired noisy THz images from clean images (clean images are generated by a handwriting generator). With such synthetic noisy-to-clean paired images, a supervised deep learning model using Pix2pixGAN is trained, which is effective to enhance real noisy THz images. After Pix2pixGAN denoising, 99% characters written on one-side of the Xuan paper can be clearly recognized, while 61% characters written on one-side of the standard paper are sufficiently recognized. The average perceptual indices of Pix2pixGAN processed images are 16.83, which is very close to the average perceptual index 16.19 of clean handwriting images. Our work has important value for THz-imaging-based nondestructive historical document analysis.

Abstract Background As complete and accurate genome sequences are becoming easier to obtain, more researchers wish to get one or more of them to support their research endeavors. Reliable and well-documented sequence assembly workflows find use in reference or pangenome projects. Results We describe modifications to the TRITEX genome assembly workflow motivated by the rise of fast and easy long-read contig assembly of inbred plant genomes and the routine deployment of the toolchains in pangenome projects. New features include the use as surrogates of or complements to dense genetic maps and the introduction of user-editable tables to make the curation of contig placements easier and more intuitive. Conclusion Even maximally contiguous sequence assemblies of the telomere-to-telomere sort, and to a yet greater extent, the fragmented kind require validation, correction, and comparison to reference standards. As pangenomics is burgeoning, these tasks are bound to become more widespread and TRITEX is one tool to get them done.
