To compare the functional outcomes of pediatric radial neck fractures treated with percutaneous reduction using Kirschner (K) wire with the Métaizeau technique, and that with open reduction plus internal fixation with K-wire.Comparative descriptive study.Haseki Training and Research Hospital Orthopedics and Traumatology Department, from December 2007 to December 2018.Children aged under 15 years, with radial neck fractures were inducted. The injury was classified according to Judet classification and the type IV was treated with either of the above technique. The inclusion criteria were a diagnosis of Judet type IV radial neck fracture and a minimum follow-up of 12 months. Exclusion criteria were patients with concomitant elbow fracture, follow-up for12 months, failure to complete the Mayo Elbow Performance Score (MEPS) functional assessment, patients with missing data. Radiological results were evaluated in accordance with the Ursei Classification. MEPS was used to assess functional development.Forty-seven children (25 boys and 22 girls) aged (5-14 years with mean age of 8.57 ± 2.3 years were inducted. The surgical approach was the Métaizeau technique in 22 patients and open reduction technique in 25 patients. MEPS in the Métaizeau technique group was 95.2, with excellent results in 15 patients (68%), good results in 7 (31%), and fair or poor results in none of the patients. The mean MEPS in the open reduction / K-wire group was 88, with excellent, good, fair, and poor results in 9 (36%), 12 (48%), 4 (16%), and none of the patients, respectively.Closed reduction using the Métaizeau technique with the elastic stable intramedullary nailing method satisfies all the criteria for minimally invasive bone surgery. This approach was forward to be considerably efficient, with excellent functional and esthetic outcomes and a low rate of complications if the indications and biomechanical principles are considered.Radial neck, Métaizeau technique, Judet classification.

Exosomes are attractive as nucleic-acid carriers because of their favourable pharmacokinetic and immunological properties and their ability to penetrate physiological barriers that are impermeable to synthetic drug-delivery vehicles. However, inserting exogenous nucleic acids, especially large messenger RNAs, into cell-secreted exosomes leads to low yields. Here we report a cellular-nanoporation method for the production of large quantities of exosomes containing therapeutic mRNAs and targeting peptides. We transfected various source cells with plasmid DNAs and stimulated the cells with a focal and transient electrical stimulus that promotes the release of exosomes carrying transcribed mRNAs and targeting peptides. Compared with bulk electroporation and other exosome-production strategies, cellular nanoporation produced up to 50-fold more exosomes and a more than 103-fold increase in exosomal mRNA transcripts, even from cells with low basal levels of exosome secretion. In orthotopic phosphatase and tensin homologue (PTEN)-deficient glioma mouse models, mRNA-containing exosomes restored tumour-suppressor function, enhanced inhibition of tumour growth and increased survival. Cellular nanoporation may enable the use of exosomes as a universal nucleic-acid carrier for applications requiring transcriptional manipulation.

Neophron percnopterus, the Egyptian vulture, is a vulture species with a declining population. One of the most important factors threatening the species is exposure to chemicals. the second largest population of this bird species is found in Turkey. Accumulation of heavy metals for this species has not been investigated. the aim of this study was to detect and measure As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn values in the feathers of Neophron percnopterus. Calamis and vane, which are different part of the feathers, were analyzed separately with ICP-OES. According to the results, the mean value of heavy metal accumulation is below the threshold levels, except for Pb (mean +/- SD = 32.26 +/- 74.71 mu g/g d.w.) and Cr (mean +/- SD = 17.82 +/- 33.74 mu g/g d.w.) in vanes. on the other hand, all heavy metal values other than Hg and Zn had critical levels, which may result in lethal and sublethal effects on individuals.

Background/Aims This study aimed to investigate the effect of lutein on methotrexate (MTX)-induced pulmonary toxicity in rats biochemically and histopathologically. Methods The rats in the MTX + lutein (MTXL, n = 6) group were given 1 mg/kg of lutein orally. A 0.9% NaCl solution was administered orally to the MTX (n = 6) group and the healthy group (HG, n = 6). One hour later, a single 20 mg/kg dose of MTX was injected intraperitoneally in the MTXL and MTX. Lutein or 0.9% NaCl solution was administered once a day for 5 days. At the end of this period, malondialdehyde (MDA), myeloperoxidase (MPO), total glutathione (tGSH), interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) were measured in the lung tissues from the animals euthanized with 50 mg/kg thiopental sodium anesthesia. Subsequently, histopathological examinations were performed. Results The levels of MDA, MPO, IL-1β, and TNF-α in the lung tissue of the MTX were significantly higher than those of the MTXL and HG groups (p < 0.0001), and the amount of tGSH was lower. The histopathological findings in the MTX group, in which the oxidants and cytokines were higher, were more severe. Conclusions Lutein prevented the MTX-induced oxidative lung damage biochemically and histopathologically. This result indicates that lutein may be useful in the treatment of MTX-induced lung damage.

A learning format gaining attention that encourages language acquisition in science is the use of dynamic models as instructional tools. This grounded theory investigates the impact of the dynamic food chain model as an alternative lesson for teaching food chains. The researchers examined the impact of a paper-based activity and a dynamic model activity on 5th grade students’ content knowledge and language development. A total of 96 English learners (ELs) and 62 native English speakers participated. Data were collected using a What I Did/What I Learned reflection and analyzed qualitatively. Results indicate that ELs exceeded native speakers in academic language development and in understanding interconnectedness of organisms. In addition, students engaging in the dynamic model activity expressed more joyful learning than students in the paper-based activity.

Consumers routinely make decisions about the timing of their consumption, making tradeoffs between consuming now or later. Most of the literature examining impatience considers monetary outcomes (i.e., delaying dollars), implicitly assuming that how the money is spent does not systematically alter impatience levels and patterns. The authors propose an impatience asymmetry for material and experiential purchases based on utility duration. Five studies provide evidence that consumers are more impatient toward experiential purchases compared to material purchases and that this increased impatience is driven by whether the value is extracted over a shorter utility duration (often associated with experiential purchases) or a longer utility duration (often associated with material purchases). Thus, when an experience is consumed over a longer period of time, the results show that impatience can be diminished. Additional results show that the effect holds in both delay and expedite frames and suggest that the results cannot be explained by differences in scheduling, time sensitivity, affect, ownership, future time perspective, or future connectedness.

Influenza A viruses (IAVs) have multiple mechanisms for altering the host immune response to aid in virus survival and propagation. While both type I and II interferons (IFNs) have been associated with increased bacterial superinfection (BSI) susceptibility, we found that in some cases type I IFNs can be beneficial for BSI outcome. Specifically, we have shown that antagonism of the type I IFN response during infection by some IAVs can lead to the development of deadly BSI. The nonstructural protein 1 (NS1) from IAV is well known for manipulating host type I IFN responses, but the viral proteins mediating BSI severity remain unknown. In this study, we demonstrate that the PDZ-binding motif (PDZ-bm) of the NS1 C-terminal region from mouse-adapted A/Puerto Rico/8/34-H1N1 (PR8) IAV dictates BSI susceptibility through regulation of IFN-α/β production. Deletion of the NS1 PDZ-bm from PR8 IAV (PR8-TRUNC) resulted in 100% survival and decreased bacterial burden in superinfected mice compared with 0% survival in mice superinfected after PR8 infection. This reduction in BSI susceptibility after infection with PR8-TRUNC was due to the presence of IFN-β, as protection from BSI was lost in Ifn-β(−/−) mice, resembling BSI during PR8 infection. PDZ-bm in PR8-infected mice inhibited the production of IFN-β posttranscriptionally, and both delayed and reduced expression of the tunable interferon-stimulated genes. Finally, a similar lack of BSI susceptibility, due to the presence of IFN-β on day 7 post-IAV infection, was also observed after infection of mice with A/TX98-H3N2 virus that naturally lacks a PDZ-bm in NS1, indicating that this mechanism of BSI regulation by NS1 PDZ-bm may not be restricted to PR8 IAV. These results demonstrate that the NS1 C-terminal PDZ-bm, like the one present in PR8 IAV, is involved in controlling susceptibility to BSI through the regulation of IFN-β, providing new mechanisms for NS1-mediated manipulation of host immunity and BSI severity.

Feeling time-pressed has become ubiquitous. Time management strategies have emerged to help individuals fit in more of their desired and necessary activities. We provide a review of these strategies. In doing so, we distinguish between two, often competing, motives people have in managing their time: activity maximization and outcome maximization. The emerging literature points to an important dilemma: a given strategy that maximizes the number of activities might be detrimental to outcome maximization. We discuss such factors that might hinder performance in work tasks and enjoyment in leisure tasks. Finally, we provide theoretically grounded recommendations that can help balance these two important goals in time management.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to present our surgical outcomes in patients who underwent arthroscopic removal of poorly positioned and/or proud metallic suture anchors applied during or after Bankart repair. Methods: A total of 14 patients who underwent open or arthroscopic Bankart repair with an initial presentation of traumatic shoulder instability between January 2010 and January 2017 and admitted to our center with complaints due to poorly positioned and/or proud metallic suture anchors were enrolled. Pre- and intraoperative findings, surgical outcomes and complications were reviewed. Diagnosis of proud or poorly positioned suture anchors was established using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of shoulder in five cases, and with shoulder arthroscopy in nine patients. Outcomes were measured by the use of the CONSTANT score and American Shoulder and Elbow Society (ASES) score. Results: Eleven male and three female patients with an average age of 29.21 ± 5.78 (range, 20 to 42) were enrolled in the present study. Revision Bankart repair was performed arthroscopically in all patients. The mean follow-up period was 40.4 months, ranging from 18 to 64 months. The preoperative Constant and ASES scores were 68.43 ± 7.05 and 38.3 ± 19.4, respectively. Postoperatively, the scores were 89.64 ± 5.39 and 89.07 ± 3.89, respectively (p < 0.01). Conclusion: To conclude, arthroscopy may yield an effective surgical option for removal of poorly positioned and/or proud metallic suture anchors after Bankart repair. However, further clinical reports on larger series are warranted to document the efficacy of this procedure in selected cases.

Inhibitors of Apoptosis Proteins (IAPs) are conserved E3‐ligases that ubiquitylate substrates to prevent apoptosis and activate the NF‐kB survival pathway, often deregulated in cancer. IAPs‐mediated regulation of NF‐kB signaling is based on the formation of protein complexes by their type‐I BIR domains. The XIAP‐BIR1 domain dimerizes to bind two TAB1 monomers, leading to downstream NF‐kB activation. Thus, impairment of XIAP‐BIR1 dimerization could represent a novel strategy to hamper cell survival in cancer. To this aim, we previously reported NF023 as a potential inhibitor of XIAP‐BIR1 dimerization. Here we present a thorough analysis of NF023 binding to XIAP‐BIR1 through biochemical, biophysical and structural data. The results obtained indicate that XIAP‐BIR1 dimerization interface is involved in NF023 binding, and that NF023 overall symmetry and the chemical features of its central moiety are essential for an efficient interaction with the protein. Such strategy provides original hints for the development of novel BIR1‐specific compounds as pro‐apoptotic agents.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the volume, amount, and localization of root resorption in the upper first premolars by micro–computed tomography (micro-CT) after three different rapid maxillary expansion appliances and two different activation rhythms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The patients were divided into three groups; Hyrax, acrylic cap splint (ACS), and full coverage acrylic bonded (FCAB) appliances. Each group was then divided into the following two subgroups: rapid maxillary expansion (RME) and semirapid maxillary expansion (SRME). After expansion was completed, the appliances were stabilized for 12 weeks during the retention period. For each group, 10 premolars (for a total of 60 premolars) were scanned with the micro-CT (SkyScan). The reconstructed 3D images of each root sample were divided into six regions. The resorption craters on these six different root surfaces were analyzed by special CTAn (SkyScan) software for direct volumetric measurements. Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis of variance and Mann-Whitney U tests were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: The total volume of root resorption was less with FCAB than with ACS and Hyrax (P < .001). In all groups, a greater volume of resorption was found on the buccal surface than on the lingual surface (P < .001). No significant differences were found between the RME and SRME groups (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS: All expansion appliances caused root resorption in the upper first premolar teeth, but FCAB may be safer in terms of root resorption. The resorption craters were generally concentrated on the buccal surface. There was no effect of activation rhythm on root resorption.

In dieser Untersuchung werden Lehramtsstudierende hinsichtlich ausgewahlter Personlichkeitseigenschaften – berufliche Interessen, berufliche Werthaltungen und Leistungsmotivation – beschrieben und im Anschluss daran Untergruppen (Cluster) identifiziert, die sich in Bezug auf diese Personlichkeitseigenschaften voneinander unterscheiden. Die Untersuchungsgruppe bilden 2289 Lehramtsstudierende (72 % weiblich), die in den Jahren 2007 bis 2012 an einem Beratungsprojekt teilgenommen haben.

The study aimed to determine the relationship between perceptions of management styles and trainers' motivation in the public sports institutions, and to examine the effect of management styles on job motivation. The sample of the research consists of 190 trainers, 18 of whom are women and 172 of whom are men working in the public sports institutions. In the study, descriptive scanning method was used, and the data obtained were analyzed by making statistical procedures such as frequency, correlation, regression analysis. It was found that democratic management style and paternalist management style had a positive effect on trainers’ job motivation. However, the liberal management style and authoritarian management style were found to have a negative effect on trainers’ job motivation. © 2021, Institute of Advanced Engineering and Science. Metabolic rate is a key ecological variable that quantifies the energy expenditure needed to fuel almost all biological processes in an organism. Metabolic rates are typically measured at the whole-organism level (woMR) with protocols that can elicit stress responses due to handling and confinement, potentially biasing resulting data. Improved, non-stressful methodology would be especially valuable for measures of field metabolic rate, which quantifies the energy expenditure of free-living individuals. Recently, techniques to measure cellular metabolic rate (cMR) in mitochondria of blood cells have become available, suggesting that blood-based cMR can be a proxy of organismal aerobic performance. Aerobic metabolism actually takes place in the mitochondria. Quantifying cMR from blood samples offers several advantages such as direct estimates of metabolism and minimized disturbance of individuals. To our knowledge, the hypothesis that blood-based cMR correlates with woMR has not yet been directly tested. We measured cMR in red blood cells of captive great tits (Parus major), first during their morning activity period and second after subjecting them to a 2.5 h day-time respirometry protocol to quantify woMR. We predicted cMR to decrease as individuals transitioned from an active to a resting state. In the two blood samples we also assessed circulating corticosterone concentrations to determine the perceived disturbance of individuals. From respirometry traces we extracted initial and final woMR measures to test for a predicted positive correlation with cMR measures, while accounting for corticosterone concentrations. Indeed, cMR declined from the first to the second measurement. Furthermore, woMR and cMR were positively related in individuals that had relatively low corticosterone concentrations and displayed little locomotor activity throughout respirometry. By contrast, woMR and cMR covaried negatively in birds that increased corticosterone concentrations and activity levels substantially. Our results show that red blood cell cMR represents a proxy for woMR when birds do not display signs of stress, i.e., either before increases in hormonal or behavioral parameters have occurred or after they have abated. This method represents a valuable tool for obtaining metabolic data repeatedly and in free-living individuals. Our findings also highlight the importance of accounting for individual stress responses when measuring metabolic rate at any level.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the volume, amount, and localization of root resorption in the maxillary first premolars using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) after expansion with four different rapid maxillary expansion (RME) appliances. Methods: In total, 20 patients who required RME and extraction of the maxillary first premolars were recruited for this study. The patients were divided into four groups according to the appliance used: miniimplant-supported hybrid RME appliance, hyrax RME appliance, acrylic-bonded RME appliance, and full-coverage RME appliance. The same activation protocol (one activation daily) was implemented in all groups. For each group, the left and right maxillary first premolars were scanned using micro-CT, and each root were divided into six regions. Resorption craters in the six regions were analyzed using special CTAn software for direct volumetric measurements. Data were statistically analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis of variance and Mann-Whitney U test with Bonferroni adjustment. Results: The hybrid expansion appliance resulted in the lowest volume of root resorption and the smallest number of craters (p < 0.001). In terms of overall root resorption, no significant difference was found among the other groups (p > 0.05). Resorption was greater on the buccal surface than on the lingual surface in all groups except the hybrid appliance group (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that all expansion appliances cause root resorption, with resorption craters generally concentrated on the buccal surface. However, the mini-implant-supported hybrid RME appliance causes lesser root resorption than do other conventional appliances.

Aqueous-based slurry media for cathode electrode production offers a cleaner and safer environment during the electrode manufacturing step compared with the conventional organic solvent-based method used in the lithium-ion battery industry. In this work, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) water-based binders are used to prepare LiNi0.5Mn0.3Co0.2O2 (NMC) cathode electrode. Detail electrochemical analysis reveals that the optimum mass ratio of CMC:SBR mixture is 1:2 when preparing an aqueous slurry for the NMC electrode. To mitigate particle cracking phenomenon during electrode drying step and obtain higher mass loading, a multi-layer coating technique is implemented. CMC-PEO binder mixture in aqueous media is also studied as an alternative aqueous processing method for NMC electrodes. The electrodes prepared with CMC-PEO mixture are demonstrated to be all crack-free, and electrochemical results indicate that the optimum mass loading of NMC electrode is between 15 and 18 mg cm(-2). This method is further tested in pouch cell format using a roll-to-roll pilot-scale production line to show the feasibility for commercial applications. Remarkably, pouch cell results manifest that aqueous-processed NMC cathode against graphite anode maintains its 89% capacity at 1C even after 1000 cycles. Highlights Water-based binders of carboxymethyl cellulose-poly(ethylene oxide) provide excellent cycling stability for LiNi0.5Mn0.3Co0.2O2 electrode. Multilayer coating allows electrodes for higher loadings without any crack formation. The water-based electrode preparation method is validated by pilot scale roll-to-roll electrode production line.
