The spring-mass model, representing a runner as a point mass supported by a single linear leg spring, has been a widely used concept in studies on running and bouncing mechanics. However, the measurement of leg and vertical stiffness has previously required force platforms and high-speed kinematic measurement systems that are costly and difficult to handle in field conditions. We propose a new "sine-wave" method for measuring stiffness during running. Based on the modeling of the force-time curve by a sine function, this method allows leg and vertical stiffness to be estimated from just a few simple mechanical parameters: body mass, forward velocity, leg length, flight time, and contact time. We compared this method to force-platform-derived stiffness measurements for treadmill dynamometer and overground running conditions, at velocities ranging from 3.33 m·s-1 to maximal running velocity in both recreational and highly trained runners. Stiffness values calculated with the proposed method ranged from 0.67% to 6.93% less than the force platform method, and thus were judged to be acceptable. Furthermore, significant linear regressions (p < 0.01) close to the identity line were obtained between force platform and sine-wave model values of stiffness. Given the limits inherent in the use of the spring-mass model, it was concluded that this sine-wave method allows leg and stiffness estimates in running on the basis of a few mechanical parameters, and could be useful in further field measurements. This study aimed to analyse fatigue-induced changes in mechanical sprinting properties during a specific repeated-sprint test in elite rugby sevens athletes. Twenty elite rugby sevens players performed ten 40 m sprints on a 30 s cycle with participant's running back and forth in a marked lane. Radar was used to assess maximal overground sprint performance over each 40 m. Macroscopic mechanical properties (maximal horizontal force (F0), maximal horizontal power (Pmax), maximal ratio of horizontal force (RFpeak), decrease in the ratio of horizontal-to-total force (DRF), total force and maximal sprinting velocity (v0)) were drawn from horizontal force velocity relationships, using a validated method applied to the speed–time data. Fatigue-induced changes were analysed comparing the first sprint to an average of 2nd-4th, 5th-7th and 8th-10th. Repeated-sprint ability (RSA) testing induced substantial changes in the maximal velocity component, with a decrease (–15%) in v0 (effect size (ES) = –2.46 to –4.98), and to a lower extent (–5.9%) in the maximal force component F0 (ES = –0.59). DRF moderately decreased (14%; ES=–0.76–1.11), and RFpeak largely decreased in the later sprints (ES = –0.32 to –1.27). Fatigue observed in this RSA test appeared to have a greater effect on the technical ability to produce horizontal force at high velocities, likely due to an alteration in the ability to maintain horizontally oriented force application when velocity increases rather than during the initial acceleration phase, but also the overall force production capacity. Background: This study aimed to determine the effects of a running sprint interval training protocol (R-SIT) on the sprint acceleration mechanical properties and jump performance. Eleven young male basketball players performed 6 R-SIT sessions for 2 weeks., Methods: Each session consisted of 30-second running bouts repeated 4 to 7 times interspersed by 4 minutes of recovery. Performance was assessed from the individual power-force-velocity profiles (PVFP) over a 20-m sprint and from a countermovement jump at baseline (PRE) and after two weeks of training (POST)., Results: Sprint time decreased by 2% over the first 5 and 10 meters (P<0.01) while no significant changes in the time at 20 meters (-0.8%, P=0.09) nor in maximal velocity (-1%, P=0.31) were detected. The average PFVP showed an increase in theoretical maximal force and power output of 5 and 4%, respectively (P<0.05), with no change in theoretical maximal speed (P=0.26). Jump height and power also increased after training (5 and 3% respectively, P<0.01). Players improved their maximal sprint distance covered during the 30-second bouts and became more fatigue-resistant to long sprint events., Conclusions: Six sessions of R-SIT helped to enhance short sprint times, acceleration and power output.

Ballistic performances are determined by both the maximal lower limb power output ( P max ) and their individual force-velocity (F-v) mechanical profile, especially the F-v imbalance ( FV imb ): difference between the athlete's actual and optimal profile. An optimized training should aim to increase P max and/or reduce FV imb . The aim of this study was to test whether an individualized training program based on the individual F-v profile would decrease subjects' individual FV imb and in turn improve vertical jump performance. FVimb was used as the reference to assign participants to different training intervention groups. Eighty four subjects were assigned to three groups: an "optimized" group divided into velocity-deficit, force-deficit, and well-balanced sub-groups based on subjects' FV imb , a "non-optimized" group for which the training program was not specifically based on FV imb and a control group. All subjects underwent a 9-week specific resistance training program. The programs were designed to reduce FV imb for the optimized groups (with specific programs for sub-groups based on individual FV imb values), while the non-optimized group followed a classical program exactly similar for all subjects. All subjects in the three optimized training sub-groups (velocity-deficit, force-deficit, and well-balanced) increased their jumping performance (12.7 ± 5.7% ES = 0.93 ± 0.09, 14.2 ± 7.3% ES = 1.00 ± 0.17, and 7.2 ± 4.5% ES = 0.70 ± 0.36, respectively) with jump height improvement for all subjects, whereas the results were much more variable and unclear in the non-optimized group. This greater change in jump height was associated with a markedly reduced FV imb for both force-deficit (57.9 ± 34.7% decrease in FV imb ) and velocity-deficit (20.1 ± 4.3%) subjects, and unclear or small changes in P max (-0.40 ± 8.4% and +10.5 ± 5.2%, respectively). An individualized training program specifically based on FV imb (gap between the actual and optimal F-v profiles of each individual) was more efficient at improving jumping performance (i.e., unloaded squat jump height) than a traditional resistance training common to all subjects regardless of their FV imb . Although improving both FV imb and P max has to be considered to improve ballistic performance, the present results showed that reducing FV imb without even increasing P max lead to clearly beneficial jump performance changes. Thus, FV imb could be considered as a potentially useful variable for prescribing optimal resistance training to improve ballistic performance.

Overground sprint studies have shown the importance of net horizontal ground reaction force impulse (IMPH) for acceleration performance, but only investigated one or two steps over the acceleration phase, and not in elite sprinters. The main aim of this study was to distinguish between propulsive (IMPH+) and braking (IMPH-) components of the IMPH and seek whether, for an expected higher IMPH, faster elite sprinters produce greater IMPH+, smaller IMPH-, or both. Nine high-level sprinters (100-m best times range: 9.95-10.60s) performed 7 sprints (2×10 m, 2×15 m, 20 m, 30 m and 40 m) during which ground reaction force was measured by a 6.60 m force platform system. By placing the starting-blocks further from the force plates at each trial, and pooling the data, we could assess the mechanics of an entire "virtual" 40-m acceleration. IMPH and IMPH+ were significantly correlated with 40-m mean speed (r=0.868 and 0.802, respectively; P<0.01), whereas vertical impulse and IMPH- were not. Multiple regression analyses confirmed the significantly higher importance of IMPH+ for sprint acceleration performance. Similar results were obtained when considering these mechanical data averaged over the first half of the sprint, but not over the second half. In conclusion, faster sprinters were those who produced the highest amounts of horizontal net impulse per unit body mass, and those who "pushed more" (higher IMPH+), but not necessarily those who also "braked less" (lower IMPH-) in the horizontal direction., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.
