Every company has a vision and mission, as well as a desire to meet the goals it has established. These short- and long-term goals can be met in a variety of ways. As a result, the companies require a well-defined plan to attain their objectives. Increased corporate value, for example, in terms of increased profits, is one of the goals that is frequently met. Employees, managers, company owners, and investors all have problems when it comes to running a firm. Conflicts of interest and many types of interests from diverse roles inside the company, for example. This poses ethical concerns that affect the company's internal as well as external environments. This is a qualitative study that employs a literature review methodology. The findings of this study offer a new way of looking at ethical issues and corporate strategy: the corporate value approach. As a result, the contribution of this research gives a solution for businesses that are experiencing similar issues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Entrepreneurial Education and the objective of fostering an Entrepreneurial Mindset have been extensively researched the last decades. So far, the main focus has been the end result of Entrepreneurial Education, namely venture creation, and more specifically venture creation through formal or core curriculum University education. Taking a different approach, this study explores the Entrepreneurial Education and the promotion of Entrepreneurial Mindset as well as of entrepreneurial competencies through extra-curriculum activities. More specifically, it uses the “Inter-Departmental Entrepreneurial Assignment” (IDEA) organized by the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) as a case study, employing a quantitative method. IDEA is a semester - long extra-curriculum activity focused on Entrepreneurial Education, involving undergraduate students from different departments. Employing two distinct, complementary questionnaires, one pre and one post, we explore how Entrepreneurial Education influenced the students focusing on a set of specific entrepreneurial competences. More specifically, through this study we aim to gain a better understanding of how such extracurriculum, University provided Entrepreneurial Education focused on students’ entrepreneurial competencies, can influence the Entrepreneurial Mindset and the entrepreneurial way of thinking. Moreover, instead of venture creation, we focus on how Entrepreneurial Education may foster entrepreneurial competencies and a way of thinking that can be beneficial in all life aspects regardless the ultimate field of employment. Finally, this study may serve as the first step towards more research on different kinds of extra-curriculum activities and their impact, not only on entrepreneurial competences, but also on the cultivation of entrepreneurial emotions and an entrepreneurial way of living. REWARD (Psychology) ,SCHOLARLY periodicals ,RESEARCH personnel ,MANAGERIAL economics ,ACADEMIC departments - Abstract
Over the last few years, ranking lists of academic journals have become one of the key indicators for evaluating individual researchers, departments and universities. How to optimally design such rankings? What can we learn from commonly used journal ranking lists? To address these questions, we propose a simple, theoretical model of optimal rewards for publication in academic journals. Based on a principal-agent model with researchers' hidden abilities, we characterize the optimal journal reward system, where all available journals are assigned to one of several categories or ranks. We provide a tractable example that has a closed-form solution and allows numerical applications. Finally, we show how to calibrate the distribution of researchers' ability levels implied by the observed journal ranking schemes. • We propose a simple framework to design an optimal reward scheme for publication in academic journals. • We characterize the optimal journal rating that maximizes the publication output of a given population of researchers. • We calibrate the distribution of researchers' abilities from the journal rankings for economics and business used in selected countries. Introduction: Diabetes mellitus, chronic disease is a silent killer pervasive in Malaysia. The rate of diabetes mellitus will likely increase in the future. This cross-sectional study was conducted among University Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) non-medical students to assess their knowledge level towards diabetes mellitus, and to determine whether there is a correlation between their sociodemographic background and their knowledge level. Methods: 391 UNIMAS non-medical students participated in this study. The students were chosen randomly from 4 faculties which are Faculty of Business and Economics, Faculty of Social Science, Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Cognitive Sciences and Management. Data was collected by using a structured self-administered questionnaire. Data entry and analysis was done by SPSS. Results: The mean age of students was 22.4± 1.35 years with male and female ratio was 1:2.37. Highest percentage of respondents were Malays with 42.7%, followed by others (includes Dayak, Iban) 30.4%, Chinese 22.8%, and Indians 4.09%. The mean score for knowledge of respondents was 26.85 ± 8.135 (57.14%). The highest percentage of correct answers was found with the prevention section (77.29%) and the lowest was the complication section (46.7%). Most respondents gained their knowledge form television (60.6%), while only 15.3% from diabetics friends. Analysis revealed that there is a significant difference between knowledge level towards diabetes mellitus with ethnicity, faculty and year of study (p < 0.05). Conclusion: UNIMAS non-medical students have average and above level of knowledge overall. It was also discovered that family history of diabetes mellitus, year of study, ethnicity and faculty influence the knowledge level towards diabetes mellitus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract

- Abstract
- Thomas and Maurice's goal for Managerial Economics is to teach students the economic way of thinking about business decisions and strategy. The 13e continues to develop critical thinking skills and provides students with a logical way of analyzing both the routine decisions of managing daily business operations as well as the longer-run strategic plans that seek to manipulate the actions and reactions of rival firms.- Managerial Economics is a self-contained textbook that requires no previous training in economics. While maintaining a rigorous style, this book is designed to be one of the most accessible books in managerial economics from which to teach and learn because of its clarity of presentation and strong end of chapter problems. Rather than parading students quickly through every interesting or new topic in microeconomics and industrial organization, this 13th edition instead carefully develops and applies the most useful concepts for business decision making and strategic planning.

- Abstract
Demystifying Global Macroeconomics (DGM) provides readers with a practical, working use of international macroeconomics. For serious business and political leaders, understanding the global interconnections in economic and financial markets is crucial for making informed and well-timed decisions. DGM takes the mystery out of seemingly complex economic interactions by providing an easy-to-understand framework within which to analyze the effects of economic, social, and political shocks to a nation's economy. John E. Marthinsen integrates the three major macroeconomic sectors, which are the credit market, goods and services market, and foreign exchange market. The author provides the reader with contemporary examples that virtually leap off the front pages of our daily news reports and confront business managers and politicians with choices and decisions to make. For example, DGM shows how to use macroeconomic tools and a global framework to analyze the effects of: U.S. tariffs on China and China's tariffs on the United States Infrastructure spending Speculative capital outflows from nations under stress, such as Argentina and Turkey, and speculative capital inflows into safe-haven countries, such as Switzerland Demonetization in India Successfully fighting the opioid abuse problem in the United States Border adjustment tax Monetary policies Fiscal policies Marthinsen keeps readers visually engaged with the strategic use of figures, tables, charts, and illustrative exhibits. Demystifying Global Macroeconomics emphasizes the interaction among markets and equips readers with a macroeconomic perspective that will last (and be used) for years. STATISTICAL hypothesis testing , *INSURANCE rates , *AUTOMOBILE insurance , *INFERENTIAL statistics , *MANAGERIAL economics , *STATISTICAL decision making - Abstract
Predictive modeling is a critical technique in many real-world applications, including auto insurance rate-making and the decision making of rate filings review for regulation purposes. It is also important in predicting financial and economic risk in business and economics. Unlike testing hypotheses in statistical inference, results obtained from predictive modeling serve as statistical evidence for the decision making of the underlying problem and discovering the functional relationship between the response variable and the predictors. As a result of this, the variable importance measures become an essential aspect of helping to better understand the contributions of predictors to the built model. In this work, we focus on the study of using generalized linear models (GLM) for the size of loss distributions. In addition, we address the problem of measuring the importance of the variables used in the GLM to further evaluate their potential impact on insurance pricing. In this regard, we propose to shift the focus from variable importance measures of factor levels to factors themselves and to develop variable importance measures for factors included in the model. Therefore, this work is exclusively for modeling with categorical variables as predictors. This work contributes to the further development of GLM modeling to make it even more practical due to this added value. This study also aims to provide benchmark estimates to allow for the regulation of insurance rates using GLM from the variable importance aspect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Blockchain technology moves data nodes and data streams from one informatics center to another based on the importance of Bitcoins, resulting in a dedicated, public, and secure network for interpretation and development of the ensuing information chain reaction. Blockchains are frequently formed by connecting interrelated patterns of information in order to conduct a secure transaction. Blockchain has the characteristics of decentralization, transparency, immutability, autonomy, open-source, anonymity, and consensus. Block chains are being utilized in a variety of real-world applications, including business and economics, financial technology, and digital currencies. This article does a comprehensive review of the literature on blockchain technology. While searching for the keyword “blockchain” as a subject, we identified a total of 1882 entries in these databases. After removing the less common record kinds, the papers were reduced to 1246 articles, which were then used for further investigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: From a skills perspective, the academic field of entrepreneurship has grown to become a key element in university studies. Determining whether these skills exist among university students and how to foster them is a key in higher education. To this effect, the aim of this study is to determine the entrepreneurial skills' level among the students on the different disciplines. The empirical application considers the case of the Faculty of Business and Economics Sciences of University of Girona. Design/methodology: Information about the skill level was collected using a skills model called Tricuspoid, which was specifically designed for the self-assessment of entrepreneurial skills. Information about students' sociodemographic, professional and educational profile was collected using a selfadministered complementary questionnaire. Bivariate analysis and statistical contrast were applied. Findings: Being a man, doing sport, balancing studying with paid work and accessing university studies via the vocational training pathway are indicators of a greater entrepreneurial capacity. On the other hand, being a woman, accessing university studies via baccalaureate or having no knowledge of English, however, are factors associated with a deficit in entrepreneurial talent. Originality/value: Considering the fact that attitude to entrepreneurship can be modified through educational interventions, identifying these factors enables us to formulate guidelines for teaching activities that increase students' entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial capacity for a better integration for our students into the job market. READING comprehension ,EXPOSITION (Rhetoric) ,BUSINESS students ,ECONOMICS students ,MANAGERIAL economics ,PRIOR learning - Abstract
Establishing relations between concepts and ideas is vital for university-level reading. However, students often understand expository text only superficially (Graesser, 2007), especially in the case of a second language (L2). Insufficiently developed linguistic competence, inadequate prior knowledge or weaker reading skills may all lead to a lack of deep comprehension. Our aim was to examine the effects of a macrostructure-based reading strategy of searching for rhetorical relations on the comprehension of a text in English as L2. A quasi-experimental study was conducted in which junior undergraduate students of business and economics were trained to establish the rhetorical structure of an expository text (c. 900 words). During reading, students were required to make graphically organized notes with explicit rhetorical relations, write linear-text summaries and answer comprehension questions. Analysis of the students' notes and summaries showed the positive effects of the training on knowledge construction and text integration (e.g., relevance, coherence, accurate rhetorical relations). Some aspects of note accuracy were negatively affected, and no effects were found on note completeness, local summary accuracy and answers to comprehension questions. The results indicate that the applied strategy significantly enhances macroprocessing leading to text integration. The revealed comprehension gaps point to the need to avoid the mechanical application of the strategy and a loss of detail in locally-oriented tasks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

What are the major journals for wine economists? Which ones are the most influential? Journal rankings are intended to reflect the place of a journal within its field, the relative difficulty of being published in that journal, and the prestige associated with it. Since no consensus has been reached as to the superiority of a given methodology, the objective of this paper is to present a new peer evaluation methodology based on a Best-Worst scaling approach applied to the field of research in wine economics and business. The list of relevant journals was drawn from a citation-based analysis and a two-steps survey was launched in 2020 involving academic researchers in this field. The results support the idea that the Best-Worst approach is a useful tool to rank journals through peer evaluation in new fields of research. Further, this exercise is of potential interest for the field of wine economics and those active within it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To facilitate access of Vietnamese private firms to financing resources, the first Stock Exchange Center in Ho Chi Minh City (HOSE) was inaugurated on July 20 SP th sp , 2000, and the first transactions were launched on July 28 SP th sp , 2000 with only two types of shares (REE and SAM - two Vietnamese manufacturing firms participating at the very early stage of the Vietnamese equitization process). This failure could be explained by the bureaucratic budgetary allocation mechanism of the socialist state, by the absence of any competition, which is why the poor performance of the key players in the economy, which are mainly state-owned and run enterprises (SOEs). Modernising the economy and increasing the resources available for businesses also means changing the shareholding and the governance of state-owned enterprises, especially for technological firms, as this impacts their financing capacity and performance (Sahut et al., [15]). ECONOMIC elites ,ENTREPRENEURSHIP ,ELITISM in education ,MANAGERIAL economics ,BUSINESS schools ,SMALL business - Abstract
Some scholars assert that entrepreneurship has attained "considerable" legitimacy. Others assert that it "is still fighting" for complete acceptance. This study explores the question, extrapolating from studies of an "elite effect" in which the publications of the highest ranked schools differ from other research-intensive schools. The most elite business schools in the USA, but not the UK, are found to allocate significantly more publications to mathematically sophisticated "analytical" fields such as economics and finance, rather than entrepreneurship and other "managerial" fields. The US elites do not look down upon entrepreneurship as such. They look down upon journals that lack high mathematics content. Leading entrepreneurship journals, except Small Business Economics Journal (SBEJ), are particularly lacking. The conclusion argues that SBEJ can help the field's legitimacy, but that other journals should not imitate analytical paradigms. Plain English Summary Academic snobs shun entrepreneurship journals. A goal for snobs is to exhibit superiority over others. For business professors, one way to do this is with mathematically sophisticated, analytical publications. Entrepreneurship journals, Small Business Economics excepted, do this relatively infrequently. These journals focus on the lives, activities, and challenges of diverse entrepreneurs. In the USA, the most elite business schools, compared with not-quite elite business schools, allocate significantly more of their articles to the journals of analytical fields such as economics, and fewer to entrepreneurship journals. This pattern is not found in the UK, where elites may have other ways to signal superiority. These elites, who accommodate entrepreneurship researchers, could pioneer with outputs of both relevance and scholarly quality, through collaboration between their practice-based and research-based professors. We investigated how learning environments–involving their physical, pedagogical, and psychosocial dimensions–influence students learning experiences in an Australian Faculty of Business and Economics. Qualitative data collection involved observations of eight classrooms over a semester, four focus groups with 21 students and interviews with six educators. The study provided deeper understanding of the dynamic and complex intrinsic interrelations of learning environment dimensions over time, addressing previous gaps in research. It identified and analysed spaces and practices, educational activities, and students' subjective experiences in different learning environments to illustrate how these multiple elements intersect and influence on the students' experience. The mixed methods used in the research helped to uncover a broader view of the learning environment and its interdependent influences over time on students' learning experiences. One practical implication is that any strategies to support a more holistic student learning experience through more effective use of learning environments should be developed at an institutional level. This study aims to assess the economic, social, and environmental sustainability of Malaysian manufacturing small and medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs) and the role of dynamic capacities in promoting sustainable business practices. The data was gathered through a survey completed by 216 Malaysian manufacturing SMEs with an SEM‐AMOS nested model comparison analysis. The findings revealed that economic, social, and environmental dimensions are related to sustainable business practices. Besides, firms' dynamic capabilities fully mediate the association between economic, social, and environmental dimensions in Malaysian manufacturing SMEs. This study intended to assist academics, practitioners, policymakers, and other sectors in establishing sustainability to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (SDG 9). This article discusses a questionnaire research carried out in order to collect information regarding the issue of student satisfaction within the context of Language for Specific Purposes (ESP) course. The data were collected through an online, self-completed, voluntary, anonymous EvaSys questionnaire. The students requested to complete the questionnaires covered a wide range of economic/business disciplines. The target population of students studying in economic/business disciplines was the following: economics-management, finance and accounting, banking and finance, tourism and catering, international relations, commerce. The aim of the research was to look into the satisfaction of students with teaching language with business purposes. The quantitative results of student satisfaction with LSP teaching revealed that the students of business and economics at Hungarian universities are satisfied with the executive, technical and learning environment. The descriptive statistical analyses have shown that the field of economics has become more feminised. Female students find it more challenging to complete courses than male students and students living in cities find it easier to complete language courses than students living in villages. Students think their skills are improving more than average during the courses. Male students rated their skills development as a small percentage better than female students. Both female and male students considered the number of contact hours sufficient. No large percentage differences were found in the satisfaction of students with their teachers' work, depending on the educational level of the parents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Whether boredom is a unitary construct or if multiple types of boredom exist is a long-standing debate. Recent research has established the existence of boredom types based on frequency observations of boredom by experience sampling. This work tries to expand our understanding of boredom and replicate these previous findings by applying intensity observations of cross-sectional type for four discrete learning activity emotions: boredom, anxiety, hopelessness, and enjoyment. Latent class analysis based on activity emotion scores from 9863 first-year students of a business and economics program results in seven profiles. Five of these profiles allow a linear ordering from low to high control and value scores (the direct antecedents of emotions), low to high positive, and high to low negative emotions. Two profiles differ from this pattern: one 'high boredom' profile and one 'low boredom' profile. We next compare antecedent relationships of activity emotions at three different levels: inter-individual, inter-class or between classes, and intra-class or within classes. Some of these relationships are invariant for the choice of level of analysis, such as hopelessness. Other relationships, such as boredom, are highly variant: within-class relationships differ from inter-individual relationships. Indeed, our results confirm that boredom is not a unitary construct. The types of boredom found and their implications for educational practice are discussed and shared in this article. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COVID-19 pandemic ,STAY-at-home orders ,BUSINESS literature ,MANAGERIAL economics ,ECONOMICS literature - Abstract
The relative importance of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and large firms is a recurrent topic in the small business economics literature. This paper presents a real and financial social accounting matrix (FSAM) capable of distinguishing the direct and indirect effects that are transferred from micro-, small, medium, and large firms to the rest of the economy. We use the hypothetical extraction method (HEM) to explore the sequence of reactions associated with shocks that arise from the COVID-19 lockdown. Using a structural model for the Spanish economy, we identify the role of different firm size categories in the aggregate gross domestic product (GDP). Our results allow us to reconcile the mixed narrative that accompanies the evaluation of the role played by these categories in economic activity by revealing that both SMEs and large firms are important for supporting economic activity. In particular, SMEs help explain 43% of the income and two-thirds of the unemployment decline caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our findings also show the importance of conditioning SME industrial policy to sectoral analysis. Plain English summary: The effects of the macroeconomic lockdown and its transmission to the rest of the economy differ by firm size and across sectors. Using the Spanish context for micro-, small, medium, and large firms, we distinguish the direct and indirect effects caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The main implications are the following: (1) Research: results emphasize that SMEs and large firms are both important to support economic activity but, in order to account for the relative effects on SMEs, it is crucial to consider the specific sector that receives the disruption. 2) Policy: SMEs are an important focus of business support policies within the EU. According to our estimations, disruptions in SMEs produce larger reductions in demand. These results could support credit policies for SMEs with a strong impact on the aggregate economy due to their greater productive and financial linkages with the domestic economy. The research of the perception of knowledge and usefulness of the Croatian language among Slovenian students in the field of economics and business was conducted with the aim of obtaining relevant information on the basis of which a decision could be made on introducing the elective course "Croatian language for economics and business" in the Slovenian higher education system. The results show that the Croatian language in the studied population takes second place (among 21 foreign languages) according to knowledge and third place according to the perception of the usefulness of language acquisition. At the same time, there is a relatively high interest among the Slovenian student population in the field of economics and business in learning the Croatian language. The results also indicate a changed attitude towards the Croatian language in Slovenian society, and that younger Slovenians make a clear distinction between the Croatian and other South Slavic languages. Purpose - Despite the general recommendation of using a combination of multiple criteria for research assessment and faculty promotion decisions, the raise of quantitative indicators is generating an emerging trend in Business Schools to use single journal impact factors (IFs) as key (unique) drivers for those relevant school decisions. This paper aims to investigate the effects of using single Web of Science (WoS)-based journal impact metrics when assessing research from two related disciplines: Business and Economics, and its potential impact for the strategic sustainability of a Business School. Design/methodology/approach - This study collected impact indicators data for Business and Economics journals from the Clarivate Web of Science database. We concentrated on the IF indicators, the Eigenfactor and the article influence score (AIS). This study examined the correlations between these indicators and then ranked disciplines and journals using these different impact metrics. Findings - Consistent with previous findings, this study finds positive correlations among these metrics. Then this study ranks the disciplines and journals using each impact metric, finding relevant and substantial differences, depending on the metric used. It is found that using AIS instead of the IF raises the relative ranking of Economics, while Business remains basically with the same rank. Research limitations/implications - This study contributes to the research assessment literature by adding substantial evidence that given the sensitivity of journal rankings to particular indicators, the selection of a single impact metric for assessing research and hiring/promotion and tenure decisions is risky and too simplistic. This research shows that biases may be larger when assessment involves researchers from related disciplines - like Business and Economics - but with different research foundations and traditions. Practical implications - Consistent with the literature, given the sensibility of journal rankings to particular indicators, the selection of a single impact metric for assessing research, assigning research funds and hiring/promotion and tenure decisions is risky and simplistic. However, this research shows that risks and biases may be larger when assessment involves researchers from related disciplines - like Business and Economics - but with different research foundations and trajectories. The use of multiple criteria is advised for such purposes. Originality/value - This is an applied work using real data from WoS that addresses a practical case of comparing the use of different journal IFs to rank-related disciplines like Business and Economics, with important implications for faculty tenure and promotion committees and for research funds granting institutions and decision-makers. Second, given its uniqueness at a firm level, HRs are associated with the firm's competitive advantages through flexibility, resilience and innovation ([24]). From a strategic perspective, [33] argue a mediator role between the HRM and the HC because through HRs practices, firms combine and transform the people's skills and talent into HC. Another relevant characteristic of these firms is that most of them are spinoffs (founded by incumbent firms from the same industry located close to their parents), which enhances tie formation in the local network, favoring collaboration harnessing of knowledge concentration ([15]). Introduction Generally speaking, human resources (HRs) are the set of people that make up a company's human factor. [Extracted from the article]

As a consequence of the coronavirus outbreak, the corporate "(in)solvency" issue will probably be one of the most frequently discussed topics in the business and economics fields. We analysed the meaning of the term solvency and the solvency assessment methodology in the papers published in the journals indexed in SSCI from 01.01.2017 to 31.12.2019. We have found that the term "solvency" is inadequately used by the authors from Roman law countries, particularly by those who are from the East European countries. We have also found that the inadequate use of the solvency assessment methodology is conditioned by the scientific field of the researchers. The further the authors are from the legal and accounting fields, the more they are inclined to misuse the term (in)solvent and to introduce the solvency ratio. Finally, we explained the probable origin of this confusion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
