Despite the huge potential for milk production, interventions to improve productivity in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are barely based on specified farm classifications. This study aimed to develop robust and context-specific farm typologies to guide content of extension farm advice/services in Uganda. From a sample of 482 dairy farmers, we collected data on farmer socio-demographics, farm management practices, ownership of farm tools and facilities, willingness to pay for extension services, milk production, and marketing. Farm typologies were obtained based on principal component and cluster analyses. Thereby, of the three dairy production systems that emerged, small-scale, largely subsistence yet extensive and low productive farms were more prominent (82.6%). Farms that were classified as large-scale, less commercialized yet extensive with modest productive systems were more than the medium-scale commercial farms with intensive and highly productive systems. However, the later were considered to potentially transform dairy farming in Uganda. It was also predicted that the validity of our farm classification may persist until half of the farms have moved between clusters. The study gives new insights on dairy production systems in Uganda, which can be used to organize more targeted research on farmers’ extension needs for facilitating delivery of relevant and effective extension services and designing appropriate extension policies.

Many species in the Fusarium fujikuroi Species Complex (FFSC) have an affinity for grass species, with whom they live in an endophytic association or cause disease. We recovered isolates of Fusarium from agriculturally important grasses in Africa and Brazil, and characterized them with morphological markers, mating type, and Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphisms (AFLPs). We also conducted multi-locus phylogenetic analyses based on partial DNA sequences of translation elongation factor-1α (TEF1), β-tubulin (TUB), and the second largest subunit of RNA polymerase (RPB2) gene regions. Sexual cross fertility was used to test the biological species concept and the sexual stage of F. madaense is described. A novel species within the FFSC, Fusarium mirum, that is different from the other known species in the complex, was formally described. Fusarium mirum, F. madaense, and Fusarium andiyazi are a tightly intertwined species trio that are morphologically identical, but phylogenetically distinguishable, and amongst whom interspecific genetic exchange may still occur. These three species are so close that they cannot be reliably distinguished if only sequences of the TEF1 gene are used. In pathogenicity tests, all tested isolates of F. madaense from sugarcane, sorghum, maize, millet and Brachiaria could induce stalk rot in sorghum, maize and millet, and pokkah boeng in sugarcane. This study increases our understanding of the diversity of species within the FFSC that cause disease in tropical grasses or act as endophytes, and their geographic distributions. The genetically close relationship between F. mirum, F. madaense, and F. andiyazi provides an opportunity to study and identify factors underlying their limited inter-specific cross-fertility and sympatric speciation.

Brazil is the world’s biggest producer of sugarcane (Saccharum spp. hybrids). Pokkah boeng is an important fungal disease in this crop caused by members of the Fusarium fujikuroi species complex (FFSC) and characterized by deformation of the aerial part of the plant and stem rot. While the occurrence of symptoms has been reported in plantations in Brazil, no official reports of the disease exist. In this study, species of the FFSC were identified that are associated with sugarcane plants with symptoms of pokkah boeng in Brazil. This was achieved using two‐loci molecular phylogeny, sexual compatibility and analysis of morphological markers. The ability of strains to cause disease in plants of sugarcane, maize, sorghum and millet was also evaluated. The 39 isolates studied were identified as F. sacchari, F. proliferatum and another, still unknown, phylogenetic lineage that is sister to F. andiyazi. Crossing field isolates of F. sacchari and F. proliferatum with their respective tester strains produced fertile perithecia and viable ascospores. All three species induced symptoms of pokkah boeng on inoculated sugarcane plants and caused stem rot in maize, sorghum and millet. Symptoms on sugarcane are chlorosis and necrosis of leaves, punctured lesions, twisted leaves, reduction of the total leaf area, death of the top of the plant and stalk rot. The findings confirmed the aetiology of the disease in Brazil, generated basic knowledge for the development of strategies for diagnosis and monitoring of the disease and support breeding programmes for selecting resistant germplasm.

500 m nordöstlich des alten Stadtkerns von Sinsheim erheben sich auf dem so genannten Michaelsberg, 30 m über der Talaue die Relikte des St. Michael geweihten Klosters. Die erste gedruckte Zusammenstellung der Klostergeschichte bietet Johann Goswin Widder im Jahre 1786. Eine der wichtigsten Quellenpublikationen, die Vorlage der so genannten „Sinsheimer Chronik", stammt von Friedrich Mone 1848 und drei Jahre später publizierte Karl Wilhelmi auf 144 Seiten die für die damalige Zeit sehr gute„ Geschichte der vormaligen freien adeligen Benedictiner-Abtei Sunnesheim". Zu nennen ist auch noch die Publikation eines Grundrisses und eines romanischen Türgewändes durch A. von Bayer 1851/55. Nach diversen archivalischen Einzelpublikationen in der „Zeitschrift für die Geschichte des Oberrheins" und anderenorts zwischen 1850 und 1874 ist die historische Datenzusammenstellung von Albert Krieger 1905 und die erste kunsthistorische Bearbeitung durch Adolf von Oechelhäuser 1909 zu erwähnen. Danach scheint das wissenschaftliche Interesse an dem Thema zu erlahmen.

Vaccination is one of the most successful medical interventions that has saved the life of millions of people. Vaccination is particularly important in patients with multiple myeloma, who have an increased risk of infections due to the disease-inherent immune suppression, and because of the immune suppressive effects of therapy. Hence, all appropriate measures should be exploited, to elicit an effective immune response to common pathogens like influenza, pneumococci, varicella zoster virus, and to those bacteria and viruses (haemophilus influenzae, meningococci, and hepatitis) that frequently may pose a significant risk to patients with multiple myeloma. Patients after autologous, and specifically after allogeneic transplantation have severely reduced antibody titers, and therefore require a broader spectrum of vaccinations. Response to vaccination in myeloma often is less vigorous than in the general population, mandating either measurement of the postvaccination antibody titers and/or repeating the vaccination. Here, we compile the existing data on vaccination in multiple myeloma and provide recommendations for clinical practice. © 2020, The Author(s).
