Abstract

The design of alternatives is an essential part of decision making that has been less studied in theory and practice compared to alternatives’ evaluation. This topic is particularly relevant in the context of public policy making, where policy design represents a crucial step of the policy cycle since it determines the quality of the alternative policies being considered. This paper attempts to formalise the decision aiding process in two real interventions dealing with alternatives’ generation for territorial policy making in Italy. The aim of this research is to understand what generates novelty within the alternatives’ design phase of a decision aiding process, i.e. what allows to expand the solution space and discover new alternatives to solve the problem under consideration. It demonstrates ways in which novelty in decision processes can be supported by Operational Research/Multicriteria Decision Aiding tools. The two case studies are used to answer the following questions: (i) Why have new alternatives arose during the policy making process? (ii) How have they been generated? (iii) Which consequences did they lead to? and (iv) What generated novelty in the process? The results highlight two main reasons that can expand the solution space within a decision aiding process: (i) dissatisfaction (of the client, of the analyst or of the relevant stakeholders, especially when dealing with public policies) with respect to the solutions currently proposed to the decision making problem and (ii) opportunity for a change in one of the variables/constraints.

Abstract

In this paper, we consider two kinds of enlargements of a Brownian filtration F: the initial enlargement with a random time τ , denoted by F (τ) , and the progressive enlargement with τ , denoted by G. We assume Jacod's equivalence hypothesis, that is, the existence of a positive F-conditional density for τ. Then, starting with the predictable representation of an F (τ)-martingale Y (τ) in terms of a standard F (τ)-Brownian motion, we consider its projection on G, denoted by Y G , and on F, denoted by y. We show how to obtain the coefficients which appear in the predictable representation property for Y G (and y) in terms of Y (τ) and its predictable representation. In the last part, we give examples of conditional densities.

International audience; The average squared volume of simplices formed by k independent copies from the same probability measure µ on R d defines an integral measure of dispersion ψ k (µ), which is a concave functional of µ after suitable normalisation. When k = 1 it corresponds to Tr(Σ µ) and when k = d we obtain the usual generalised variance det(Σ µ), with Σ µ the covariance matrix of µ. The dispersion ψ k (µ) generates a notion of simplicial potential at any x ∈ R d , dependent on µ. We show that this simplicial potential is a quadratic convex function of x, with minimum value at the mean a µ for µ, and that the potential at a µ defines a central measure of scatter similar to ψ k (µ), thereby generalising results by Wilks (1960) and van der Vaart (1965) for the generalised variance. Simplicial potentials define generalised Mahalanobis distances, expressed as weighted sums of such distances in every k-margin, and we show that the matrix involved in the generalised distance is a particular generalised inverse of Σ µ , constructed from its characteristic polynomial, when k = rank(Σ µ). Finally, we show how simplicial potentials can be used to define simplicial distances between two distributions, depending on their means and covariances, with interesting features when the distributions are close to singularity.

Abstract

In recent years, a rising numbers of people arrived in the European Union, traveling across the Mediterranean Sea or overland through Southeast Europe in what has been later named as the European migrant crisis. In the last 5 years, more than 16 thousands people have lost their lives in the Mediterranean sea during the crossing. The United Nations Secretary General Strategy on New Technologies is supporting the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics to accelerate the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, which includes safe and regular migration processes among the others. In the same spirit, the central idea of this project aims at using AI technology for Search And Rescue (SAR) operations at sea. International audience; La thèse réalisée dans le cadre d’un Doctorate in Business Administration, appelé DBA (Doctorat en administration des affaires), exige que les doctorants établissent des choix parmi un large éventail de méthodes et d’outils de recherche pour concrétiser ce projet. Déterminer, choisir, mettre en œuvre et contextualiser les méthodes et outils de recherche sont autant d’étapes cruciales pour la réussite du travail de recherche et de la thèse de DBA.Les 25 chapitres de cet ouvrage ont été préparés à l’attention des candidat(e)s de DBA afin de les guider et de les orienter dans le choix de méthodes et d’outils de recherche. La première partie pose la question du choix des méthodes de recherche, la deuxième s’intéresse aux méthodes de recueil des données, la troisième aux méthodes d’analyse des données, et la quatrième partie porte sur la contextualisation des méthodes. Rédigés pour rendre les contenus accessibles et favoriser leur appropriation par les lecteurs, les chapitres proposent les fondements et les ressources permettant de guider les choix d’ordre méthodologique.Ce livre s’inscrit dans la collection Business Science Institute afin de produire des ouvrages pour guider le travail académique des doctorants dans le parcours de formation scientifique de DBA. Le premier livre collectif paru en 2015, La création de connaissance par les managers, visait à établir les balises principales de ce nouveau rôle assumé par les managers en situation de pratique : celui de producteur de nouvelles connaissances. Le deuxième livre collectif paru en 2017, Le projet de thèse de DBA, visait à guider la réflexion au sujet de l’élaboration de la proposition du projet de la thèse de DBA.

Abstract

Literature Reviews (LR) are particularly useful for demonstrating the coherence and cumulativeness (or lack thereof) of MIS research and for developing avenues for further research. Most top-tier journals now publish LRs, and many have even begun devoting specific sections to them. Our starting point is that LRs are not epistemologically neutral, and three approaches commonly underlie literature reviews: positivism (identifying the concepts, theories and models closest to the phenomenon that is being explained); interpretivism (identifying the various concepts and theories expressed by various actors and grouping them into multiple perspectives); and critical approaches (identifying both the underlying assumptions and conditions of the production of theories and their effects). We suggest a fourth approach to LRs underpinned by the philosophy of critical realism (CR) and argue that it can enable the (re)interpretation of existing literature through the identification of underlying generative mechanisms. These generative mechanisms provide a common denominator to enable the synthesis of concepts and theories in new ways, helping to bridge previously thought to be incompatible theories, and contributing to a more cumulative view of academic knowledge. We illustrate the value of a CR-based literature through its application to the topic of IT Strategic Value in the MIS and strategic management literature; we show how the identification of four generative mechanisms and three core agencies can support a more integrated view of IT Strategic Value. We then discuss the implications of the use of generative mechanisms and propose guidelines from a CR perspective for carrying out literature reviews.

A matching in a two-sided market often incurs an externality: a matched resource may become unavailable to the other side of the market, at least for a while. This is especially an issue in online platforms involving human experts as the expert resources are often scarce. The efficient utilization of experts in these platforms is made challenging by the fact that the information available about the parties involved is usually limited. To address this challenge, we develop a model of a task-expert matching system where a task is matched to an expert using not only the prior information about the task but also the feedback obtained from the past matches. In our model the tasks arrive online while the experts are fixed and constrained by a finite service capacity. For this model, we characterize the maximum task resolution throughput a platform can achieve. We show that the natural greedy approaches where each expert is assigned a task most suitable to her skill is suboptimal, as it does not internalize the above externality. We develop a throughput optimal backpressure algorithm which does so by accounting for the `congestion' among different task types. Abstract

This paper studies the prevalence of potential anticompetitive effects of vertical mergers using a novel data set on U.S. and international buyer-seller relationships and across a large range of industries. We find that relationships are more likely to break when suppliers vertically integrate with one of the buyers’ competitors than when they vertically integrate with an unrelated firm. This relationship holds for both domestic and cross-border mergers and for domestic and international relationships. It also holds when instrumenting mergers using exogenous downward pressure on the supplier’s stock prices, suggesting that reverse causality is unlikely to explain the result. In contrast, the relationship vanishes when using rumored or announced but not completed integration events. Firms experience a substantial drop in sales when one of their suppliers integrates with one of their competitors. This sales drop is mitigated if the firm has alternative suppliers in place. These findings are consistent with anticompetitive effects of vertical mergers, such as vertical foreclosure, rising input costs for rivals, or self-foreclosure. Abstract

In this paper, we present a probabilistic numerical algorithm combining dynamic programming, Monte Carlo simulations and local basis regressions to solve non-stationary optimal multiple switching problems in infinite horizon. We provide the rate of convergence of the method in terms of the time step used to discretize the problem, of the size of the local hypercubes involved in the regressions, and of the truncating time horizon. To make the method viable for problems in high dimension and long time horizon, we extend a memory reduction method to the general Euler scheme, so that, when performing the numerical resolution, the storage of the Monte Carlo simulation paths is not needed. Then, we apply this algorithm to a model of optimal investment in power plants. This model takes into account electricity demand, cointegrated fuel prices, carbon price and random outages of power plants. It computes the optimal level of investment in each generation technology, considered as a whole, w.r.t. the electricity spot price. This electricity price is itself built according to a new extended structural model. In particular, it is a function of several factors, among which the installed capacities. The evolution of the optimal generation mix is illustrated on a realistic numerical problem in dimension eight, i.e. with two different technologies and six random factors.

Abstract

40 pages, 6 figures; International audience; The present paper studies multiple failure and signature analysis of coherent systems using the theory of monomial ideals. While system reliability has been studied using Hilbert series of monomial ideals, this is not enough to understand in a deeper sense the ideal structure features that reflect the behavior of the system under multiple simultaneous failures and signature. Therefore, we introduce the lcm-filtration of a monomial ideal, and we study the Hilbert series and resolutions of the corresponding ideals. Given a monomial ideal, we explicitly compute the resolutions for all ideals in the associated lcm-filtration, and we apply this to study coherent systems. Some computational results are shown in examples to demonstrate the usefulness of this approach and the computational issues that arise. We also study the failure distribution from a statistical point of view by means of the algebraic tools described.

We consider a measure ψ k \ud ψk\ud of dispersion which extends the notion of Wilk’s generalised variance for a d \ud d\ud -dimensional distribution, and is based on the mean squared volume of simplices of dimension k≤d \ud k≤d\ud formed by k+1 \ud k+1\ud independent copies. We show how ψ k \ud ψk\ud can be expressed in terms of the eigenvalues of the covariance matrix of the distribution, also when a n \ud n\ud -point sample is used for its estimation, and prove its concavity when raised at a suitable power. Some properties of dispersion-maximising distributions are derived, including a necessary and sufficient condition for optimality. Finally, we show how this measure of dispersion can be used for the design of optimal experiments, with equivalence to A \ud A\ud and D \ud D\ud -optimal design for k=1 \ud k=1\ud and k=d \ud k=d\ud , respectively. Simple illustrative examples are presented.

Abstract

The world of work is changing. A century after moving from an agriculture-centered world to an Industrial one, from self-employed workers to salaried employees, our modern economies are slowly transitioning towards a new model: based on simultaneous collaboration and competition, the boundaries of contemporary organizations are blurring; information technologies are allowing individuals and companies to set base away from cities; shared working spaces are triggering new forms of collaborations between individuals and corporations.This White Paper aims at diagnosing key institutional tensions related to new work practices in the city, and putting forward questions and general propositions likely to overcome these tensions. The idea is to analyze how new collaborative communities and collaborative logics (of coworkers, hackers, makers, fabbers, and teleworkers) and more traditional collective activity and modes of decision making (of the city and corporations in the city) can jointly contribute to the co-production of harmonious new ways of life and new ways of working. Reinventing joint public policies, corporate strategies and citizenship appear here as a key stake where usual dichotomies between private-public, collaborative-non-collaborative economy, traditional citizens and hacktivists need to be overcome.We thus identify in this document a set of controversies around four strong political issues both for the city and the field of management, linked to the emergence of collaborative spaces:o Topic 1. Space, territories, and public policy on collaborative communities in the city;o Topic 2. Collaborative communities and their roles in education in the city;o Topic 3. Business models and their communication in the context of collaborative spaces and collaborative communities;o Topic 4. Collaborative spaces and their roles in innovation and entrepreneurial dynamics at the level of the cityBeyond our controversies, we underline three paradoxes which should be at the heart of new questions for policy-makers, hacktivists, actors of collaborative movements, and citizens (distinctions which may become less and less relevant in the years to come):o Social versus economic orientations of both the city and the collaborative communities it can host;o Critical/revolutionary versus more incremental relationships between cities, organizations, societies, collaborative communities, and new work practices;o Local territory (district/proximate area) grounded versus broader city-oriented or connectivity related issues about collaborative movement and new work practices.To balance these tensions, we elaborate seven general areas of questions and propositions for all stakeholders:o The generalization of infra-organization (physical collaborative platforms);o The emergence of “ ‘inclusive lab’ labels” (elaborated and managed by collaborative communities themselves);o A renewed academic presence in the city and in the country-side (with more virtual, distributed and ‘experiential’ logics);o Ephemeral and mobile labs managed jointly by public, collaborative and private stakeholders;o “Open open” innovation in public and semi-public spaces of the city;o Rise of mega-spaces for creativity in the city;o Development of a global infrastructure for coworkers, mobile workers and teleworkers.These are directions we see as particularly promising to manage the tensions, paradoxes and stakes explicated by our controversies.We hope that these questions and propositions will inspire both academics, politicians, hacktivists and entrepreneurs for future collaborations on the study and joint transformation of public policies, corporate strategies, and citizenship.

Abstract

International audience; Consumers try to avoid temptation when exposed to appetizing foods by diverting their attention away from their senses (e.g., sight, smell, mouthfeel) and bodily states (e.g., state of arousal, salivation) in order to focus on their longer term goals (e.g., eating healthily, achieving an ideal body weight). However, when not including sensations in their decision‐making processes, consumers risk depleting their self‐regulatory resources, potentially leading to unhealthy food choices. Conversely, based on the concept of “embodied self‐regulation,” the suggestion is made that considering bodily states may help consumers regulate their food choices more effectively. A new model is proposed that facilitates understanding observed consumer behavior and the success or failure of self‐control in food intake. It is argued that bodily states and sensory information should be considered when modeling consumer behavior and developing health‐related advocacy and communication campaigns. The model proposed here leads to new perspectives on consumer consumption behavior and health policy research and strategies.

Abstract

International audience; In his Theory of Public Finance (1959), Musgrave invented the concept of merit wants to describe public wants that are satisfied by goods provided by the government in violation of the principle of consumer sovereignty. Starting from Musgrave’s mature discussion (1987), I construct two categories to classify the explanations of merit goods. The first strand of thought attempts to justify merit goods within the New welfare economics, by modifying its assumptions to accommodate irrationality, uncertainty, lack of information, and psychic externalities. The second category encompasses more radical departures from consumer sovereignty, drawn from philosophical critiques of economics. In the third part of the paper, I argue that the two strands might be represented by a non-individualistic social welfare function. I also show how this solution echoes Musgrave’s early views on public expenditures before he coined the concept of merit wants. From an historical perspective, the survival of the concept highlights the persistence of a social point of view in welfare economics.

Abstract

Whereas interior point methods provide polynomial-time linear programming algorithms, the running time bounds depend on bit-complexity or condition measures that can be unbounded in the problem dimension. This is in contrast with the simplex method that always admits an exponential bound. We introduce a new polynomial-time path-following interior point method where the number of iterations also admits a combinatorial upper bound $O(2^{n}n^{15}\log n)$ for an n-variable linear program in standard form. This complements previous work by Allamigeon, Benchimol, Gaubert, and Joswig (SIAGA 2018) that exhibited a family of instances where any path-following method must take exponentially many iterations. The number of iterations of our algorithm is at most $O(n^{15}\log n)$ times the number of segments of any piecewise linear curve in the wide neighborhood of the central path. In particular, it matches the number of iterations of any path following interior point method up to this polynomial factor. The overall exponential upper bound derives from studying the max central path’, a piecewise-linear curve with the number of pieces bounded by the total length of 2n shadow vertex simplex paths. From the existence of a line segment in the wide neighborhood we derive strong implications on the structure of the corresponding segment of the central path. Our algorithm is able to detect this structure from the local geometry at the current iterate, and constructs a step direction that descends along this segment. The bound $O(n^{15}\log n)$ that applies for arbitrarily long line segments is derived from a combinatorial progress measure. Our algorithm falls into the family of layered least squares interior point methods introduced by Vavasis and Ye (Math. Prog. 1996). In contrast to previous layered least squares methods that partition the kernel of the constraint matrix into coordinate subspaces, our method creates layers based on a general subspace providing more flexibility. Our result also implies the same bound on the number of iterations of the trust region interior point method by Lan, Monteiro, and Tsuchiya (SIOPT 2009).

Abstract

Food imitating products are chemical consumer items used frequently in the household for cleaning and personal hygiene (e.g., bleach, soap, and shampoo), which resemble food products. Their containers replicate elements of food package design such as possessing a shape close in style to drinking product containers or bearing labels that depict colorful fruits. In marketing, these incongruent forms are designed to increase the appeal of functional products, leading to chemical consumer product embellishment. However, due to the resulting visual ambiguity, food imitating products may expose consumers to the risk of being poisoned from ingestion. Thus, from a public health perspective, food imitating products are considered dangerous chemical products that should not be sold, and may merit being recalled for the safety of consumers. To help policymakers address the hazardous presence of food imitating products, the purpose of this article is to identify the specific design features that generate most ambiguity for the consumer, and therefore increase the likelihood of confusion with foodstuffs. Among the visual elements of food packaging, the two most important features (shape and label) are manipulated in a series of three lab studies combining six Implicit Association Tests (IATs) and two explicit measures on products' drinkability and safety. IATs were administered to assess consumers' implicit association of liquid products with tastiness in a within-subject design in which the participants (N = 122) were presented with two kinds of food imitating products with a drink shape or drink label compared with drinks (experiential products with congruent form) and classic chemical products (hygiene products) (functional products with congruent form). Results show that chemical consumer products with incongruent drink shapes (but not drink labels) as an element of food package design are both implicitly associated with tastiness and explicitly judged as safe and drinkable. These results require confirmation in other studies involving different shapes and labels. Notwithstanding, due to the misleading effect of this ambiguity, public health authorities are thus well advised to focus their market surveillance on chemical products emulating a food or drink shape.

À Paraître en 2017; Le concept de bien méritoire (merit good) a été inventé par Richard A. Musgrave dans le cadre de sa Theory of Public Finance publiée en 1959. Le but de cet article est de situer le débat sur la justification du concept de bien méritoire dans une perspective historique. Les différentes prises de position reflètent et participent à l’évolution de l’économie du bien-être des années 1950 à aujourd’hui. Dans la première section, je reconstruis le contexte de la théorisation des dépenses publiques en économie en identifiant plus spécifiquement l’apport de Musgrave. Dans les deux sections suivantes, je montre que l’on peut distinguer deux grandes familles dans le corpus sur la justification du concept de biens méritoires. Dans la deuxième section, je montre comment certains auteurs justifient les biens méritoires en adaptant légèrement les hypothèses de l’économie du bien-être. Dans la troisième section, je discute les usages du concept qui remettent en question la dominance des préférences individuelles dans l’évaluation du bien-être, notamment en admettant des responsabilités de l’État socialement irréductibles aux demandes individuelles.

International audience; We consider functionals measuring the dispersion of a d-dimensional distribution which are based on the volumes of simplices of dimension k ≤ d formed by k + 1 independent copies and raised to some power δ. We study properties of extremal measures that maximize these functionals. In particular, for positive δ we characterize their support and for negative δ we establish connection with potential theory and motivate the application to space-filling design for computer experiments. Several illustrative examples are presented.

Abstract

National audience; Cet article propose une réflexion sur l'action publique pour accompagner, orienter et réguler les transformations et les différenciations régionales face à la mondialisation. Les défis pour l'État sont importants dans la mesure où il existe, à côté des grandes agglomérations, des bassins d'emploi plus vulnérables : dans un contexte de vieillissement de la population et de faible mobilité de certaines catégories de travailleurs, les territoires sont confrontés à des risques de pénurie de main-d'œuvre dans les régions dynamiques et d'accroissement du chômage dans les bassins d'emploi vulnérables. L'efficacité (de la polarisation) et l'équité sociale n'étant pas nécessairement opposées, l'intervention en faveur des territoires ne peut être confinée au registre de la compensation par redistribution sociale, la politique de réduction des inégalités territoriales pouvant dans certains cas contribuer à l'intérêt général. En outre, tenir compte des tendances nouvelles d'autonomie de la localisation des ménages ouvre d'autres voies possibles pour la politique régionale. Trois orientations stratégiques d'action de l'État en direction des régions sont proposées : la stratégie « métropolaire », la Stratégie « Lisbonne+ » et la stratégie « dynamique résidentielle ». Cette dernière privilégie une politique de localisation des ménages dans des territoires résidentiels arrimée à un objectif de développement durable des territoires.

Abstract

We investigate and prove the mathematical properties of a general class of one-dimensional unimodal smooth maps perturbed with a heteroscedastic noise. Specifically, we investigate the stability of the associated Markov chain, show the weak convergence of the unique stationary measure to the invariant measure of the map, and show that the average Lyapunov exponent depends continuously on the Markov chain parameters. Representing the Markov chain in terms of random transformation enables us to state and prove the Central Limit Theorem, the large deviation principle, and the Berry-Ess\`een inequality. We perform a multifractal analysis for the invariant and the stationary measures, and we prove Gumbel's law for the Markov chain with an extreme index equal to 1. In addition, we present an example linked to the financial concept of systemic risk and leverage cycle, and we use the model to investigate the finite sample properties of our asymptotic results., Comment: 31 pages, 8 figures

https://doi.org/10.1111/iere.12632 Why is invention strongly positively correlated with parental income not only in the United States but also in Finland, which displays low income inequality and high social mobility? Using data on 1.45 M Finnish individuals and their parents, we find the following: (i) the positive association between parental income and off-spring probability of inventing is greatly reduced when controlling for parental education; (ii) instrumenting for the parents having an MSc degree using distance to nearest university reveals a large causal effect of parental education on offspring probability of inventing; and (iii) the causal effect of parental education has been markedly weakened by the introduction in the early 1970s of a comprehensive schooling reform.

Abstract

International audience; A common practice in many auctions is to offer bidders an opportunity to improve their bids, known as a best and final offer stage. This improved bid can depend on new information either about the asset or about the competitors. This paper examines the effects of new information regarding competitors, seeking to determine what information the auctioneer should provide assuming the set of allowable bids is discrete. The rational strategy profile that maximizes the revenue of the auctioneer is the one where each bidder makes the highest possible bid that is lower than his valuation of the item. This strategy profile is an equilibrium for a large enough number of bidders, regardless of the information released. We compare the number of bidders needed for this profile to be an equilibrium under different information structures. We find that it becomes an equilibrium with fewer bidders when less additional information is made available to the bidders regarding the competition. It follows that when the number of bidders is a priori unknown, there are some advantages to the auctioneer not revealing information and conducting a one-stage auction instead.

Abstract

The remediation of contaminated sites is often subject to substantial cost overruns. This persistent discrepancy between estimated and realized costs is chiefly responsible for misguided land use and wasteful delays in the reconversion of former industrial sites. In order to deal with incomplete information and uncertainty in this context, this paper draws on stochastic modelling and mathematical finance methods. We show that relatively simple and usable formulas can then be derived for better assessing cleanup strategies. These formulas apply to generic remediation technologies and scenarios. They are robust to misspecification of key parameters (like the effectiveness of a prescribed treatment). They also yield effective practical rules for decision making and budget provisioning.

Abstract

International audience; To compare income and wealth distributions and to assess the effects of policy that affect those distributions require reliable inequality-measurement tools. However, commonly used inequality measures such as the Gini coefficient have an apparently counter-intuitive property: income growth among the rich may actually reduce measured inequality. We show that there are just two inequality measures that both avoid this anomalous behavior and satisfy the principle of transfers. We further show that the recent increases in US income inequality are understated by the conventional Gini coefficient and explain why a simple alternative inequality measure should be preferred in practice.

Abstract

In recent years the field of decision analysis has been heavily influenced by the "analytics'' perspective, which integrates advanced data-mining and learning methods, often associated with increasing access to "Big-Data", with decision support systems. This rapidly growing and very successful field of Analytics has been strongly business-oriented since its origin and is typically focussed on data-driven decision processes. In public decisions, however, issues such as individual and social values, culture and public engagement play a much bigger role and, to a large extent, characterise the policy cycle of design, testing, implementation, evaluation and review. From this perspective public policy making seems to be a much more socially complex process than has hitherto been considered by most analytics methods and applications. In this paper we thus suggest a framework for the use of analytics in supporting the policy cycle - and conceptualise it as "Business Analytics".

Abstract

[Background]: Currently, data on treatment, outcome, and prognostic factors in children with tuberculous meningitis (TBM) in Europe are limited. To date, most existing data on TBM originate from adult studies, or studies conducted in low-resource settings., [Methods]: We designed a multicenter, retrospective study involving 27 pediatric healthcare institutions in 9 European countries via an established pediatric TB research network, before and after the 2014 revision of World Health Organization (WHO) dosing recommendations., [Results]: Of 118 children, 39 (33.1%) had TBM grade 1, 68 (57.6%) grade 2, and 11 (9.3%) grade 3. Fifty-eight (49.1%) children received a standard 4-drug treatment regimen; other commonly used drugs included streptomycin, prothionamide, and amikacin. Almost half of the patients (48.3%; 56/116) were admitted to intensive care unit, with a median stay of 10 (interquartile range [IQR] 4.5–21.0) days. Of 104 children with complete outcome data, 9.6% (10/104) died, and only 47.1% (49/104) recovered fully. Main long-term sequelae included spasticity of 1 or more limbs and developmental delay both in 19.2% (20/104), and seizure disorder in 17.3% (18/104). Multivariate regression analyses identified microbiological confirmation of TBM, the need for neurosurgical intervention, and mechanical ventilation as risk factors for unfavorable outcome., [Conclusions]: There was considerable heterogeneity in the use of TB drugs in this cohort. Despite few children presenting with advanced disease and the study being conducted in a high-resource setting, morbidity and mortality were high. Abstract

Insertions of parasitic DNA within coding sequences are usually deleterious and are generally counter-selected during evolution. Thanks to nuclear dimorphism, ciliates provide unique models to study the fate of such insertions. Their germline genome undergoes extensive rearrangements during development of a new somatic macronucleus from the germline micronucleus following sexual events. In Paramecium, these rearrangements include precise excision of unique-copy Internal Eliminated Sequences (IES) from the somatic DNA, requiring the activity of a domesticated piggyBac transposase, PiggyMac. We have sequenced Paramecium tetraurelia germline DNA, establishing a genome-wide catalogue of ∼45,000 IESs, in order to gain insight into their evolutionary origin and excision mechanism. We obtained direct evidence that PiggyMac is required for excision of all IESs. Homology with known P. tetraurelia Tc1/mariner transposons, described here, indicates that at least a fraction of IESs derive from these elements. Most IES insertions occurred before a recent whole-genome duplication that preceded diversification of the P. aurelia species complex, but IES invasion of the Paramecium genome appears to be an ongoing process. Once inserted, IESs decay rapidly by accumulation of deletions and point substitutions. Over 90% of the IESs are shorter than 150 bp and present a remarkable size distribution with a ∼10 bp periodicity, corresponding to the helical repeat of double-stranded DNA and suggesting DNA loop formation during assembly of a transpososome-like excision complex. IESs are equally frequent within and between coding sequences; however, excision is not 100% efficient and there is selective pressure against IES insertions, in particular within highly expressed genes. We discuss the possibility that ancient domestication of a piggyBac transposase favored subsequent propagation of transposons throughout the germline by allowing insertions in coding sequences, a fraction of the genome in which parasitic DNA is not usually tolerated., Author Summary Ciliates are unicellular eukaryotes that rearrange their genomes at every sexual generation when a new somatic macronucleus, responsible for gene expression, develops from a copy of the germline micronucleus. In Paramecium, assembly of a functional somatic genome requires precise excision of interstitial DNA segments, the Internal Eliminated Sequences (IES), involving a domesticated piggyBac transposase, PiggyMac. To study IES origin and evolution, we sequenced germline DNA and identified 45,000 IESs. We found that at least some of these unique-copy elements are decayed Tc1/mariner transposons and that IES insertion is likely an ongoing process. After insertion, elements decay rapidly by accumulation of deletions and substitutions. The 93% of IESs shorter than 150 bp display a remarkable size distribution with a periodicity of 10 bp, the helical repeat of double-stranded DNA, consistent with the idea that evolution has only retained IESs that can form a double-stranded DNA loop during assembly of an excision complex. We propose that the ancient domestication of a piggyBac transposase, which provided a precise excision mechanism, enabled transposons to subsequently invade Paramecium coding sequences, a fraction of the genome that does not usually tolerate parasitic DNA.

We consider the one-dimensional diffusion $X$ that satisfies the stochastic differential equation $$ dX_t = b(X_t) \, dt + \sigma (X_t) \, dW_t $$ in the interior $int(I) = \mbox{} ]\alpha, \beta[$ of a given interval $I \subseteq [-\infty, \infty]$, where $b, \sigma: int(I)\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ are Borel-measurable functions and $W$ is a standard one-dimensional Brownian motion. We allow for the endpoints $\alpha$ and $\beta$ to be inaccessibl or absorbing. Given a Borel-measurable function $r: I \rightarrow \mathbb{R}_+$ that is uniformly bounded away from 0, we establish a new analytic representation of the $r(\cdot)$ potential of a continuous additive functional of $X$. Furthermore, we derive a complete characterisation of differences of two convex functions in terms of appropriate $r(\cdot)$-potentials, and we show that a function $F: I \rightarrow \mathbb{R}_+$ is $r(\cdot)$-excessive if and only if it is the difference of two convex functions and $- \bigl(\frac{1}{2} \sigma ^2 F'' + bF' - rF \bigr)$ is a positive measure. In the presence of this condition, we show that $v$ is the difference of two convex functions, and we prove that it satisfies the variational inequality $$ \max \left\{ \frac{1}{2}\sigma ^2 v'' + bv' - rv , \ \overline{f} - v \right\} = 0 $$ in the sense of distributions, where $\overline{f}$ identifies wit the upper semicontinuous envelope of $f$ in the interior $int(I)$ of $I$. Conversely, we derive a simple necessary and sufficient condition for a solution to the equation above to identify with the value function $v$. Furthermore, we establish several other characterisations of the solution to the optimal stopping problem, including a generalisation of the so-called ``principle of smooth fit''. In our analysis, we also make a construction that is concerned with pasting weak solutions to the SDE at appropriate hitting times, which is an issue of fundamental importance to dynamic programming.

Abstract

International audience; In order to explore scientific writing in Information Systems (IS) journals, we adopt a combination of historical and rhetorical approaches. We first investigate the history of universities, business schools, learned societies and scientific articles. This perspective allows us to capture the legacy of scientific writing standards, which emerged in the 18th and 19th centuries. Then, we focus on two leading IS journals (EJIS and MISQ). An historical analysis of both outlets is carried out, based on data related to their creation, evolution of editorial statements, and key epistemological and methodological aspects. We also focus on argumentative strategies found in a sample of 436 abstracts from both journals. Three main logical anchorages (sometimes combined) are identified, and related to three argumentative strategies: 'deepening of knowledge', 'solving an enigma' and 'addressing a practical managerial issue'. We relate these writing norms to historical imprints of management and business studies, in particular: enigmafocused rhetorics, interest in institutionalized literature, neglect for managerially grounded rhetoric and lack of reflexivity in scientific writing. We explain this relation as a quest for academic legitimacy. Lastly, some suggestions are offered to address the discrepancies between these writing norms and more recent epistemological and theoretical stances adopted by IS researchers.

Abstract

Introduction: The On&Out study is aimed at assessing the effectiveness, cost-utility and physiological underpinnings of the FIBROWALK multicomponent intervention conducted in two different settings: online (FIBRO-On) or outdoors (FIBRO-Out). Both interventions have proved to be efficacious in the short-term but there is no study assessing their comparative effectiveness nor their long-term effects. For the first time, this study will also evaluate the cost-utility (6-month time-horizon) and the effects on immune-inflammatory biomarkers and Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) levels of both interventions. The objectives of this 6-month, randomized, controlled trial (RCT) are 1) to examine the effectiveness and cost-utility of adding FIBRO-On or FIBRO-Out to Treatment-As-Usual (TAU) for individuals with fibromyalgia (FM); 2) to identify pre–post differences in blood biomarker levels in the three study arms and 3) to analyze the role of process variables as mediators of 6-month follow-up clinical outcomes.Methods and analysis: Participants will be 225 individuals with FM recruited at Vall d’Hebron University Hospital (Barcelona, Spain), randomly allocated to one of the three study arms: TAU vs. TAU + FIBRO-On vs. TAU + FIBRO-Out. A comprehensive assessment to collect functional impairment, pain, fatigue, depressive and anxiety symptoms, perceived stress, central sensitization, physical function, sleep quality, perceived cognitive dysfunction, kinesiophobia, pain catastrophizing, psychological inflexibility in pain and pain knowledge will be conducted pre-intervention, at 6 weeks, post-intervention (12 weeks), and at 6-month follow-up. Changes in immune-inflammatory biomarkers [i.e., IL-6, CXCL8, IL-17A, IL-4, IL-10, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP)] and Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor will be evaluated in 40 participants in each treatment arm (total n = 120) at pre- and post-treatment. Quality of life and direct and indirect costs will be evaluated at baseline and at 6-month follow-up. Linear mixed-effects regression models using restricted maximum likelihood, mediational models and a full economic evaluation applying bootstrapping techniques, acceptability curves and sensitivity analyses will be computed.Ethics and dissemination: This study has been approved by the Ethics Committee of the Vall d’Hebron Institute of Research. The results will be actively disseminated through peer-reviewed journals, conference presentations, social media and various community engagement activities. Abstract

An early death is, undoubtedly, a serious disadvantage. However, the compensation of short-lived individuals has remained so far largely unexplored, probably because it appears infeasible. Indeed, short-lived agents can hardly be identified ex ante, and cannot be compensated ex post. We argue that, despite the above difficulties, a compensation can be carried out by encouraging early consumption in the life cycle. In a model with heterogeneous preferences and longevities, we show how a specific social criterion can be derived from intuitive principles, and we study the corresponding optimal policy under various informational assumptions. We also study the robustness of our solution to alternative types of preferences and savings policies., Une mort précoce constitue, sans aucun doute, un dommage majeur. Cependant, la compensation des individus à vie courte est restée jusqu'à présent largement non explorée, principalement parce que cette compensation semble infaisable. En effet, les personnes à vie courte peuvent difficilement être identifiées ex ante, et ne peuvent plus être compensées ex post. Nous démontrons que, malgré les difficultés mentionnées ci-dessus, une compensation peut être réalisée, en encourageant la consommation au début du cycle de vie. Sur la base d'un modèle où la population présente des préférences hétérogènes et des longueurs de vie inégales, nous montrons qu'un critère social spécifique peut être dérivé à partir de principes intuitifs, et nous étudions la politique optimale correspondante sous divers contextes informationnels. International audience; Given the continued growth in the globalization of production, working conditions in global supply chains have come under increased scrutiny. Although there has been much debate about corporate codes of conduct and monitoring procedures, the question of how buyers influence their suppliers' working conditions at the factory level remains poorly understood. Using a unique data set based on monitoring by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and original survey data collected in Cambodia's garment sector, this study shows that the main channel linking buyers and supplier compliance performance is the nature of their relationships. Market-based relationships mediated through sourcing agents are systematically associated with poorer compliance performance. In particular, when a reputation-conscious buyer is sourcing from a factory, it has a positive effect on compliance, and their presence appears to condition relationship variables. Deterrence and learning channels are not supported by the evidence. The findings signal the need to pay more attention to the nature of buyer-supplier relationships if we seek to improve labor standard compliance. Market-based relationships 153 motivate neither buyers nor suppliers to invest their time and resources to tackle the root causes of poor working conditions. Rather, the results here indicate the need to develop collaborative relationships marked by open dialogue, trust, and commitment, which in turn help to foster an environment supportive of continuous improvement in working conditions.

Hitherto, such linkages have not been a focus of the literature. The framework is used to analyse the impact of shocks that occur in one region (for example, productivity improvements or increases in housing supply) on other regions, highlighting the key adjustment mechanisms and their long-run implications for incomes, the cost of living, and the spatial distribution of population. Abstract

International audience; Little is known about costs related to the surveillance of patients that have undergone curative resection of colorectal cancer. The aim of this study was to calculate the observed surveillance costs for 385 patients followed-up over a 3-year period, to estimate surveillance costs if French guidelines are respected, and to identify the determinants related to surveillance costs to derive a global estimation for France, using a linear mixed model. The observed mean surveillance cost was 713. If French recommendations were strictly applied, the estimated mean cost would vary between 680 and 1,069 according to the frequency of abdominal ultrasound. The predicted determinants of cost were: age, recurrence, duration of surveillance since diagnosis, and adjuvant treatments. For France, the surveillance cost represented 4.4% of the cost of colorectal cancer management. The cost of surveillance should now be balanced with its effectiveness and compared with surveillance alternatives.

Abstract

The spectacularly early decline of French fertility is one of the great puzzles of economic history. There are no convincing explanations for why France entered a fertility transition over a century before anywhere else in the world. This analysis links highly detailed individual level fertility life histories to wealth at death data for four rural villages in transition-era France, 1750-1850. The results show that it was the richest groups who reduced their family size first and that they used spacing strategies to achieve this. In cross section, measures of the environment for social mobility are strongly associated with the fertility decline. The evidence presented here demonstrates that socioeconomic status mattered during the early French fertility decline. This study is a first step towards re-establishing the French experience as paramount in our understanding of Europe's demographic transition., La baisse précoce et spectaculaire de la fécondité des mariages en France reste l'une des grandes énigmes de l'histoire économique. On ne peut expliquer de manière convaincante pourquoi la France entama sa transition de la fertilité plus d'un siècle avant le reste du monde. Cette étude met en relation des données biographiques très détaillées sur les comportements individuels en matière de fertilité avec des données sur les niveaux de patrimoine au décès pour quatre villages en zone rurale durant la phase de transition française (1750-1850). Les résultats de cette analyse montrent que les catégories les plus aisées de la population furent les premières à réduire la taille de leur famille en ayant recours à un espacement des naissances. Dans notre échantillon, le milieu social et la mobilité sociale sont fortement associés à la baisse de la fertilité. Nos travaux mettent donc en évidence le rôle important du statut socio-économique dans la baisse de la fertilité. Cette étude constitue un premier pas vers le réexamen de l'expérience française comme une étape essentielle pour notre compréhension de la transition démographique européenne.
