Abstract

Objective To study the role of hyaluronic acid (HA) in polidocanol (POL) foam. Methods The dose-dependent effect of HA-POL on cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) as well as foam stability was evaluated by measuring optical density (OD) values and foam half-life time (FHT), respectively. An in vitro model was utilized for estimating the foam blood-displacement capacity by adopting maximum displacement distance (MDD) and displacement time. A comparison of foam viscosity was also carried out. Results The OD values of HUVECs treated with HA first increased and then decreased with the growing dosage of HA while cells treated with HA-POL died. Both FHT and displacement time were prolonged statistically with a gradually enhanced foam viscosity. As to MDD, there were no significant differences. Conclusions HA was found to promote HUVECs proliferation slightly, but this was almost negligible when compared to the cell-killing capacity of 1% POL. The viscosity of POL foam was enhanced by HA indicating its positive correlation with both stability and displacement capacity of POL foam.

347. Nuclei detection in breast histopathology images with iterative correction.

Abstract

This work presents a deep network architecture to improve nuclei detection performance and achieve the high localization accuracy of nuclei in breast cancer histopathology images. The proposed model consists of two parts, generating nuclear candidate module and refining nuclear localization module. We first design a novel patch learning method to obtain high-quality nuclear candidates, where in addition to categories, location representations are also added to the patch information to implement the multi-task learning process of nuclear classification and localization; meanwhile, the deep supervision mechanism is introduced to obtain the coherent contributions from each scale layer. In order to refine nuclear localization, we propose an iterative correction strategy to make the prediction progressively closer to the ground truth, which significantly improves the accuracy of nuclear localization and facilitates neighbor size selection in the nonmaximum suppression step. Experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of our method for nuclei detection on the H&E stained histopathological image dataset as compared to previous state-of-the-art methods, especially in multiple cluttered nuclei detection, can achieve better results than existing techniques. Abstract

In this work, we propose a facile method for fast synthesis of Ag nanowires by an ultrasonication-mediated galvanic replacement reaction between Ag+ and raspberry-like Cu nanoparticles at room temperature. The structural and morphological properties of the obtained Ag nanowires were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and selected area electron diffraction techniques. The diameter and length of the obtained Ag nanowires were in the range of 60–90 nm and 25–55 μm, respectively. By coating Ag nanowire dispersions on polyethylene terephthalate substrates, the prepared flexible films had a transmittance of about 80% at 550 nm and sheet resistance of about 15 Ω sq−1. It was noteworthy that the flexible transparent conductive films could tolerate multiple bendings at different angles and maintained good conductivity even after 10 000 repeated bendings. Because of the comprehensive performance and simple preparation method of Ag nanowires, we envision that the development of such a promising route for high-quality Ag nanowires could have broad applications in the field of flexible electronic devices. 349. Correlation Information Bottleneck: Towards Adapting Pretrained Multimodal Models for Robust Visual Question Answering.

Abstract

Benefiting from large-scale pretrained vision language models (VLMs), the performance of visual question answering (VQA) has approached human oracles. However, finetuning such models on limited data often suffers from overfitting and poor generalization issues, leading to a lack of model robustness. In this paper, we aim to improve input robustness from an information bottleneck perspective when adapting pretrained VLMs to the downstream VQA task. Input robustness refers to the ability of models to defend against visual and linguistic input variations, as well as shortcut learning involved in inputs. Generally, the representations obtained by pretrained VLMs inevitably contain irrelevant and redundant information for a specific downstream task, resulting in statistically spurious correlations and insensitivity to input variations. To encourage representations to converge to a minimal sufficient statistic in multimodal learning, we propose Correlation Information Bottleneck (CIB), which seeks a tradeoff between compression and redundancy in representations by minimizing the mutual information (MI) between inputs and representations while maximizing the MI between outputs and representations. Moreover, we derive a tight theoretical upper bound for the mutual information between multimodal inputs and representations, incorporating different internal correlations that guide models to learn more robust representations and facilitate modality alignment.
