- Abstract
The purpose of this research was to investigate the potential predictive value of preoperative systemic inflammatory indexes in identifying lymph node metastasis among patients diagnosed with small bowel cancer. A retrospective analysis of clinical data was conducted on small bowel cancer patients who underwent surgical treatment at the gastrointestinal surgery department of our hospital between January 2010 and June 2021. Patients were divided into groups based on the presence or absence of lymph node metastasis as confirmed by postoperative pathological results. The study compared the differences in preoperative inflammatory indexes and clinical data between the two groups using single factor analysis and multifactorial Logistic regression analysis. Furthermore, a nomogram model for predicting lymph node metastasis in colorectal cancer was constructed using R software and internally validated. The study sample consisted of 140 small bowel cancer patients, postoperative pathology confirmed lymph node metastasis in 72 cases. Univariate analysis results indicated associations between preoperative inflammatory indexes and clinical data with lymph node metastasis in small bowel cancer. Multifactorial logistic regression analysis revealed that gender, PLR, number of lymph node dissection, and lymphovascular invasion independently influenced lymph node metastasis in small bowel cancer patients. The developed nomogram model demonstrated a C-index of 0.855 (95% CI 0.792–0.917), with a calibrated prediction curve closely resembling the ideal curve. An elevated PLR is an independent risk factor for LNM in patients with small bowel cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), calculated from peripheral blood immune-inflammatory cell counts, is considered a predictor of survival in various cancers. Nevertheless, there is a lack of research into the predictive value of NLR specifically in gastric cancer patients following surgery using the Da Vinci robot. Investigate the objectives of this research, confirm the positive predictive value of NLR in the prognosis of gastric cancer patients undergoing Da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery by comparing its prognostic ability with other inflammation markers and tumor biomarkers. In this retrospective analysis, information from 128 individuals diagnosed with gastric cancer and treated with da Vinci robot-assisted surgery was examined. The study examined various markers in the peripheral blood, including neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), lymphocyte/monocyte ratio (LMR), systemic immune-inflammatory index (SII) prognostic nutrition index (PNI), cancer antigen 125 (CA125), carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9), carbohydrate antigen 72-4 (CA72-4), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP).To ascertain the prognostic ability and optimal cutoff values of each parameter, operating characteristic curves and the area under the curve were utilized in the analysis. For evaluation of independent prognostic factors, we utilized Kaplan–Meier curves and multifactorial Cox analysis. The variables from the multifactorial Cox analysis were used to construct a nomogram. NLR, LMR, CEA, AFP, primary location, largest tumor size and TNM stage were all found to be significant predictive elements for overall survival (OS). Multivariate Cox identified NLR (P = 0.005), LMR (P = 0.03) and AFP (P = 0.007) as the only separate predictive variables among hematological indicators. The nomogram built using NLR demonstrates excellent predictive performance at 1 year (AUC = 0.778), 3 years (AUC = 0.773), and 5 years (AUC = 0.781). Cross-validation demonstrates that this model has favorable predictive performance and discriminative ability. NLR is an uncomplicated yet potent marker for forecasting the survival result of individuals with gastric cancer following da Vinci robotic surgery, and it possesses considerable predictive significance. The nomogram based on NLR provides patients with a visual and accurate prognosis prediction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Docetaxel is the preferred chemotherapeutic agent in patients with castrate‐resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). However, patients eventually develop docetaxel resistance and in the absence of effective treatment options. Consequently, it is essential to investigate the mechanisms generating docetaxel resistance and develop novel alternative therapeutic targets. RNA sequencing was undertaken on docetaxel‐sensitive and docetaxel‐resistant prostate cancer (PCa) cells. Subsequently, chemoresistance, cancer stemness, and lipid metabolism were investigated. To obtain insight into the precise activities and action mechanisms of NOTCH3 in docetaxel‐resistant PCa, immunoprecipitation, mass spectrometry, ChIP, luciferase reporter assay, cell metabolism, and animal experiments were performed. Through RNA sequencing analysis, we found that NOTCH3 expression was markedly higher in docetaxel‐resistant cells relative to parental cells, and that this trend was continued in docetaxel‐resistant PCa tissues. Experiments in vitro and in vivo revealed that NOTCH3 enhanced stemness, lipid metabolism, and docetaxel resistance in PCa. Mechanistically, NOTCH3 is bound to TUBB3 and activates the MAPK signaling pathway. Moreover, NOTCH3 was directly regulated by MEF2A in docetaxel‐resistant cells. Notably, targeting NOTCH3 and the MEF2A/TUBB3 signaling axis was related to docetaxel chemoresistance in PCa. Overall, these results demonstrated that NOTCH3 fostered stemness, lipid metabolism, and docetaxel resistance in PCa via the TUBB3 and MAPK signaling pathways. Therefore, NOTCH3 may be employed as a prognostic biomarker in PCa patients. NOTCH3 could be a therapeutic target for PCa patients, particularly those who have developed docetaxel resistance. Vegetation on dunes regulates the water supply from the dunes to the inter-dune lowland, which is a crucial factor affecting lake water dynamics in the inter-dune lowland. Previous researchers have paid insufficient attention to the water regulation function of dunes on a landscape- and regional scale. To fill this gap, both remote sensing technology and field observations were used to analyze the variations in the lake area and their influence factors, such as vegetation coverage and precipitation in the lake watershed, on a multi-year scale (2000–2020) and one-year scale (2021), respectively. The results showed that precipitation is the main factor influencing the changes in lake water, and artificial sand vegetation can regulate the changes in lake water. On the multi-year scale, with the coverage of artificial sand-fixing vegetation increasing on sand dunes in the lake watershed, the areas of the lakes were gradually decreasing. On the one-year scale, with dune vegetation coverage increased, the water supply from dunes to lakes showed a decreasing trend. This model can provide a possibility for estimating and predicting the influence of water supply from dunes to lakes that is affected by sand-fixing vegetation. The findings have significant theoretical and practical utility for the rational utilization of water resources in sandy land, as well as for assisting in the selection of an optimized construction mode for desert control projects. The effects of water content and water activity on the lipid stability of air-dried hairtail (Trichiurus haumela) were investigated during chilled storage. Air-dried hairtail samples with high and low water contents were comparatively analyzed over 8 days of storage at 4 °C. The results indicated that the decreases in water activity and increases in the NaCl content significantly inhibited lipid oxidation in the air-dried hairtail samples. The peroxidation value (PV), conjugated diene value (CD), thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) value, and p-anisidine value (p-AnV) of the air-dried hairtail significantly increased with the extension of storage time. The low water content significantly inhibited the activity of neutral and alkaline lipase, in addition to lipoxygenase, and retarded the rapid increases in the non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) content in the hairtail samples. The correlation analysis results showed that the TBARS, p-AnV, and lipase activity were positively correlated in the air-dried hairtail samples, and the lower water content significantly inhibited the progress of lipid oxidation. This study offers a theoretical framework for the industrial processing and storage of air-dried hairtail products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ultraviolet position‐sensitive detectors (PSDs) are expected to undergo harsh environments, such as high temperatures, for a wide variety of applications in military, civilian, and aerospace. However, no report on relevant PSDs operating at high temperatures can be found up to now. Herein, we design a new 2D/3D graphitic carbon nitride (g‐C3N4)/gallium nitride (GaN) hybrid heterojunction to construct the ultraviolet high‐temperature‐resistant PSD. The g‐C3N4/GaN PSD exhibits a high position sensitivity of 355 mV mm−1, a rise/fall response time of 1.7/2.3 ms, and a nonlinearity of 0.5% at room temperature. The ultralow formation energy of −0.917 eV atom−1 has been obtained via the thermodynamic phase stability calculations, which endows g‐C3N4 with robust stability against heat. By merits of the strong built‐in electric field of the 2D/3D hybrid heterojunction and robust thermo‐stability of g‐C3N4, the g‐C3N4/GaN PSD delivers an excellent position sensitivity and angle detection nonlinearity of 315 mV mm−1 and 1.4%, respectively, with high repeatability at a high temperature up to 700 K, outperforming most of the other counterparts and even commercial silicon‐based devices. This work unveils the high‐temperature PSD, and pioneers a new path to constructing g‐C3N4‐based harsh‐environment‐tolerant optoelectronic devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to solve the common problems of weak generalization ability and unstable prediction accuracy of neural network algorithm model on yarn quality prediction in the case of small samples in recent researches, a prediction model of random forest algorithm was established. A multi-layer perceptron (MLP) neural network algorithm model and a linear regression algorithm model were established as comparison models. The prediction experiments of yarn evenness and strength were carried out. The determination coefficient and prediction error were used to evaluate the prediction accuracy of the prediction model, and K fold cross validation was used to evaluate the generalization ability of the prediction models. The experimental results show that: in the case of small samples, compared with the MLP neural network algorithm model and the linear regression algorithm model, the random forest algorithm model has higher determination coefficient and smaller prediction error in the conventional prediction experiment and higher determination coefficients with smaller variation range in the K fold cross validation with different folding numbers. It is verified that the random forest algorithm model has good prediction accuracy, stability and generalization ability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The recycling of discarded military bombs holds significant importance in improving energy efficiency within the military field. In this study, we employed first‐principles calculations (DFT) to compute the affinity of toluene, acetone, and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) towards TNT and RDX, highlighting the solubility differences that enable their effective separation. Furthermore, through recovery and separation experiments, we successfully obtained TNT and RDX samples, which were then characterized using gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry (GC‐MS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to experimentally validate the results obtained from molecular simulation experiments. The results revealed that using toluene for the extraction and recovery of TNT and RDX from waste B explosives yielded the highest recovery efficiency and component purity. SEM analysis showed that TNT extracted with toluene exhibited a regular layered surface, while RDX particles demonstrated a more uniform distribution. This study provides a theoretical basis for the separation and recovery of TNT and RDX from waste B explosives using extraction methods, from the perspective of molecular simulation. - Abstract
In regions of the nitrogen limited low latitude ocean, phosphate can also be depleted to levels initiating stress responses in marine microbes. Here, we associate a broad region of phosphate depletion in the subtropical North Pacific with different levels of phosphorus stress. Nutrient and aerosol addition experiments demonstrated primary nitrogen limitation of the bulk phytoplankton community, with supply of aerosols relieving this limitation. At northern sites with depleted phosphate, alkaline phosphatase activities were enhanced, indicating elevated phosphorus stress. Analysis of satellite- and model-derived aerosol loading showed that aerosol deposition was elevated in these regions. Surface rate measurements suggested that the regional enhancement in phosphate depletion was predominantly driven by elevated nitrogen fixation, likely stimulated by the coincident supply of aerosol iron. Such observations are important for predicting future biogeochemical responses in the subtropical North Pacific to changing aerosol supply.

- Abstract
Mesoscale eddies are common in the subtropical Northwest Pacific, however, relatively little is known about their spatial variability and temporal evolution, and how these impact upper ocean biogeochemistry. Here we investigate these using observations of a cyclonic eddy carried out along four sequential transects. Consistent with previous observations of cyclonic eddies, the eddy core had doming isopycnals, bringing elevated nutrient waters nearer to the surface. However, we also found that the upper layer of the eddy above the nutricline had significantly lower phosphate concentrations within its core relative to its edge. We attributed this to elevated N 2 fixation within the eddy core, which was likely driven by enhanced subsurface iron supply, ultimately resulting in increased phosphate consumption. Eddy‐enhanced N 2 fixation was additionally supported by the elevation of nitrate + nitrite to phosphate ratios below the euphotic zone. Moreover, we observed that while the upward displacement of isopycnals within the eddy core led to an increase in phytoplankton biomass in the lower euphotic zone, there was no significant increase in total phytoplankton biomass across the entire euphotic zone. Cyclonic eddies in the subtropical North Pacific are projected to be becoming more frequent, implying that such dynamics could become increasingly important for regulating nutrient biogeochemistry and ultimately productivity of the region. Key Points Lower phosphate concentrations were observed above the nutricline within the eddy core in comparison to the edge Enhanced N2 fixation within the eddy core is proposed to have driven increased phosphate consumption No substantial total phytoplankton biomass increase was found within the eddy core

- Abstract
The bottom boundary layer (BBL) contributes significantly to the global energy dissipation of low-frequency flows in the abyssal ocean, but how this dissipation occurs remains poorly understood. Using in situ data collected near the BBL at an abyssal seamount in the western Pacific Ocean, we demonstrate that strong bottom-trapped flows over sloping topography can lose their energy to near-inertial waves (NIWs) generated via the adjustment of the bottom Ekman layer. The NIWs with near-resonant frequencies corresponding to internal waves with propagation direction parallel to the topographic slope are ob-served. These waves are strongest in the BBL and have a correlation with the off-seamount subinertial flows largely attributed to the Ekman transport driven by the bottom-trapped anticyclonic circulation over the seamount. The bottom-intensified NIWs are observed to have dominant upward-propagating energy and hypothesized to be generated via Ekman flow-topography in-teractions in the BBL. Energy loss from the near-bottom flows to radiating NIWs (-8 X 10-4 W m-2) is estimated to be sub-stantially larger than that due to bottom drag dissipation (-2 X 10-4 W m-2), suggesting the important role of internal-wave generation via the Ekman transport adjustment in damping the subinertial flows over the sloping seafloor.

- Abstract
This report introduces a new family of multimodal models, Gemini, that exhibit remarkable capabilities across image, audio, video, and text understanding. The Gemini family consists of Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, suitable for applications ranging from complex reasoning tasks to on-device memory-constrained use-cases. Evaluation on a broad range of benchmarks shows that our most-capable Gemini Ultra model advances the state of the art in 30 of 32 of these benchmarks - notably being the first model to achieve human-expert performance on the well-studied exam benchmark MMLU, and improving the state of the art in every one of the 20 multimodal benchmarks we examined. We believe that the new capabilities of the Gemini family in cross-modal reasoning and language understanding will enable a wide variety of use cases. We discuss our approach toward post-training and deploying Gemini models responsibly to users through services including Gemini, Gemini Advanced, Google AI Studio, and Cloud Vertex AI.
