301. Lithium depletion in solar-like stars: no planet connection

Abstract

We have determined precise stellar parameters and lithium abundances in a sample of 117 stars with basic properties very similar to the Sun. This sample selection reduces biasing effects and systematic errors in the analysis. We estimate the ages of our sample stars mainly from isochrone fitting but also from measurements of rotation period and X-ray luminosity and test the connection between lithium abundance, age, and stellar parameters. We find strong evidence for increasing lithium depletion with age. Our sample includes 14 stars that are known to host planets and it does not support recent claims that planet-host stars have experienced more lithium depletion than stars without planets. We find the solar lithium abundance normal for a star of its age, mass, and metallicity. Furthermore, we analyze published data for 82 stars that were reported to support an enhanced lithium depletion in planet hosts. We show that those stars in fact follow an age trend very similar to that found with our sample and that the presence of giant planets is not related to low lithium abundances. Abstract

Marknadsrätten är det system av rättsregler som drar upp rättsliga gränser för företagens handlande på marknaden genom ramregler som särskilt behandlar företagens etablering, konkurrens, marknadsföring, prissättning och avtalsvillkor samt skyddet för konsumenterna. MFL är den del av marknadsrätten som innehåller de rättsliga styrmedlen för företagens åtgärder på marknaden. Reglerna tillgodoser skilda syften och skyddar ett flertal olika intressen. I förgrunden står konsumentskyddet som det viktigaste intresset tillsammans med företagens intressen av en fri, effektiv och tillbörlig konkurrens på marknaden. Svensson, Den svenska marknadsföringslagstiftningen, s. 10. 1 juli 2008 trädde en ny MFL i kraft i Sverige. Den nya MFL implementerar Europaparlamentets och rådets direktiv 2005/29/EG om otillbörliga affärsmetoder (direktivet). Syftet med denna uppsats är att redogöra för de nya reglerna och analysera de skillnader som föreligger mellan 2008 och 1995 års MFL. En ytterligare aspekt som behandlas är hur den nya MFL kommer att fungera som en harmoniserad EG-lagstiftning. Direktivet, som har implementerats, är utformat som ett fullharmoniseringsdirektiv. Det innebär dels en fullständig harmonisering av de frågor som omfattas av direktivet och dels att medlemsstaterna är förhindrade att införa eller behålla bestämmelser som avviker från vad som föreskrivs i direktivet. Direktivet syftar till att bidra till att den inre marknaden fungerar korrekt och att säkerställa en hög konsumentskyddsnivå genom att tillnärma medlemsstaternas lagar och andra författningar avseende otillbörliga affärsmetoder som skadar konsumenternas ekonomiska intressen. Vidare ska direktivet tillämpas på otillbörliga affärsmetoder som tillämpas av näringsidkare gentemot konsumenter före, under och efter en affärstransaktion som gäller en produkt (art. 1). 306. Increased saliva cortisol awakening response in patients with mild cognitive impairment

Abstract

Background: It is unknown whether HPA-axis dysfunction is present in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The aim of the present study was to investigate whether cortisol levels are elevated among patients with MCI and/or whether the individuals have adequate feedback control of their HPA axis. Material and Methods: 27 patients with MCI and 15 healthy controls were included in the study. Saliva samplings were performed 5 times a day before intake of 0.5 mg dexamethasone, and 5 times a day after intake of dexamethasone, respectively. Results: Significantly higher cortisol levels were found 15 min after awakening among patients with MCI in comparison with the controls, both before and after dexamethasone administration (p < 0.05). Also, the ratio between cortisol at awakening time and 15 min after awakening was lower in the patient group after dexamethasone administration (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences in basal cortisol levels before or after dexamethasone between groups. Conclusion: The results indicate that there is an HPA-axis disturbance, with normal basal cortisol levels and increased awakening response among patients with MCI. The dissociation between basal values and the awakening response may be of pathophysiological importance for the cognitive impairment.

Abstract

The chemical composition of the Sun is an essential piece of reference data for astronomy, cosmology, astroparticle, space and geophysics: elemental abundances of essentially all astronomical objects are referenced to the solar composition, and basically every process involving the Sun depends on its composition. This article, dealing with the intermediate-mass elements Na to Ca, is the first in a series describing the comprehensive re-determination of the solar composition. In this series we severely scrutinise all ingredients of the analysis across all elements, to obtain the most accurate, homogeneous and reliable results possible. We employ a highly realistic 3D hydrodynamic model of the solar photosphere, which has successfully passed an arsenal of observational diagnostics. For comparison, and to quantify remaining systematic errors, we repeat the analysis using three different 1D hydrostatic model atmospheres (marcs, miss and Holweger & Müller 1974, Sol. Phys., 39, 19) and a horizontally and temporally-averaged version of the 3D model (〈3D〉). We account for departures from local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) wherever possible. We have scoured the literature for the best possible input data, carefully assessing transition probabilities, hyperfine splitting, partition functions and other data for inclusion in the analysis. We have put the lines we use through a very stringent quality check in terms of their observed profiles and atomic data, and discarded all that we suspect to be blended. Our final recommended 3D+NLTE abundances are: log εNa = 6:21 ± 0:04, log εMg = 7:59 ± 0:04, log εAl = 6:43 ± 0:04, log εSi = 7:51 ± 0:03, log εP = 5:41 ± 0:03, log εS = 7:13 ± 0:03, log εK = 5:04 ± 0:05 and log εCa = 6:32 ± 0:03. The uncertainties include both statistical and systematic errors. Our results are systematically smaller than most previous ones with the 1D semi-empirical Holweger & Müller model, whereas the h3Di model returns abundances very similar to the full 3D calculations. This analysis provides a complete description and a slight update of the results presented in Asplund et al. Abstract

Background/Aims: Demyelination and axonal degeneration are the hallmarks of established white matter lesions (WML). The neurochemistry of ongoing WML is only partially known. We explored cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) substances as markers of brain tissue damage in relation to progression of WML rated on magnetic resonance imaging. Methods: CSF from elderly individuals with WML was analyzed for amyloid markers, total τ, hyperphosphorylated τ, neurofilament protein light subunit, sulfatide and CSF/serum-albumin ratio. After 3 years, a follow-up magnetic resonance imaging was performed. Progression of WML was rated using the Rotterdam Progression Scale (RPS). Results: 37 subjects (age 73.6 ± 4.6 years) were included. Subjects with more pronounced progression (RPS > 2; n = 15) had lower mean sulfatide concentration at baseline as compared to subjects with no or minimal progression (RPS 0-2; n = 22) according to univariate analyses (p = 0.009). Sulfatide was the only biomarker that predicted the RPS score according to regression analysis, explaining 18.9% of the total variance (r = 0.38, p = 0.015). Conclusion: The correlation of CSF sulfatide levels and RPS scores may reflect a remyelination response to the demyelination process associated with WML. Abstract

The 4MOST instrument is a multi-object spectrograph that will address Galactic and extragalactic science cases simultaneously by observing targets from a large number of different surveys within each science exposure. This parallel mode of operation and the survey nature of 4MOST require some distinct 4MOST- specific operational features within the overall operations model of ESO. The main feature is that the 4MOST Consortium will deliver, not only the instrument, but also contractual services to the user community, which is why 4MOST is also described as a facility. This white paper concentrates on information particularly useful to answering the forthcoming Call for Letters of Intent., Published in The Messenger vol. 175, pp. 12-16, March 2019.

Abstract

We introduce the 4-metre Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope (4MOST), a new high-multiplex, wide-field spectroscopic survey facility under development for the four-metre-class Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) at Paranal. Its key specifications are: a large field of view (FoV) of 4.2 square degrees and a high multiplex capability, with 1624 fibres feeding two low-resolution spectrographs (R = λ/Δλ ~ 6500), and 812 fibres transferring light to the high-resolution spectrograph (R ~ 20 000). After a description of the instrument and its expected performance, a short overview is given of its operational scheme and planned 4MOST Consortium science; these aspects are covered in more detail in other articles in this edition of The Messenger. Finally, the processes, schedules, and policies concerning the selection of ESO Community Surveys are presented, commencing with a singular opportunity to submit Letters of Intent for Public Surveys during the first five years of 4MOST operations., Published in The Messenger vol. 175, pp. 3-11, March 2019.

Abstract

We will study the formation history of the Milky Way, and the earliest phases of its chemical enrichment, with a sample of more than 1.5 million stars at high galactic latitude. Elemental abundances of up to 20 elements with a precision of better than 0.2 dex will be derived for these stars. The sample will include members of kinematically coherent substructures, which we will associate with their possible birthplaces by means of their abundance signatures and kinematics, allowing us to test models of galaxy formation. Our target catalogue is also expected to contain 30 000 stars at a metallicity of less than one hundredth that of the Sun. This sample will therefore be almost a factor of 100 larger than currently existing samples of metal-poor stars for which precise elemental abundances are available (determined from high-resolution spectroscopy), enabling us to study the early chemical evolution of the Milky Way in unprecedented detail., Published in The Messenger vol. 175, pp. 26-29, March 2019.

Abstract

The primordial lithium abundance inferred from WMAP and standard Big Bang nucleosysnthesis is approximately three times higher than the plateau value measured in old metal-poor Population II stars, suggesting that these stars have undergone atmospheric Li depletion. To constrain the physics responsible for such depletion, we conducted a homogeneous analysis of a large sample of stars in the metal-poor globular cluster NGC 6397, covering all evolutionary phases from below the main-sequence turnoff to high up the red-giant branch (RGB). The dwarf, turnoff, and early subgiant stars form a thin abundance plateau, with a sharpe edge in the middle of the subgiant branch, where Li dilution caused by the inward extension of the convective envelope starts (the beginning of the so-called first dredge up). A second steep abundance drop is seen at the RGB bump, again highlighting the need for the onset of nonstandard mixing in this evolutionary phase. Moreover, by also measuring the sodium abundances of the targets, we have gained insight into the degree of pollution by early cluster self-enrichement, and may separate highly polluted, Li-poor and Na-rich stars from stars formed from pristine material. Our observational findings strictly limit both the extent of lithium surface depletion, which in turn constrains the efficiency of mixing below the outer convection zone, and the resulting spread in lithium abundance in metal-poor turn-off stars

Abstract

The "stellar” solution to the cosmological lithium problem proposes that surface depletion of lithium in low-mass, metal-poor stars can reconcile the lower abundances found for Galactic halo stars with the primordial prediction. Globular clusters are ideal environments for studies of the surface evolution of lithium, with large number statistics possible to obtain for main sequence stars as well as giants. We discuss the Li abundances measured for >450 stars in the globular cluster NGC 6397, focusing on the evidence for lithium depletion and especially highlighting how the inferred abundances and interpretations are affected by early cluster self-enrichment and systematic uncertainties in the effective temperature determination

Abstract

Lithium's susceptibility to burning in stellar interiors makes it an invaluable tracer for delineating the evolutionary pathways of stars, offering insights into the processes governing their development. Observationally, the complex Li production and depletion mechanisms in stars manifest themselves as Li plateaus, and as Li-enhanced and Li-depleted regions of the HR diagram. The Li-dip represents a narrow range in effective temperature close to the main-sequence turn-off, where stars have slightly super-solar masses and strongly depleted Li. To study the modification of Li through stellar evolution, we measure 3D non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) Li abundance for 581 149 stars released in GALAH DR3. We describe a novel method that fits the observed spectra using a combination of 3D NLTE Li line profiles with blending metal-line strength that are optimized on a star-by-star basis. Furthermore, realistic errors are determined by a Monte Carlo nested sampling algorithm which samples the posterior distribution of the fitted spectral parameters. The method is validated by recovering parameters from a synthetic spectrum and comparing to 26 stars in the Hypatia catalogue. We find 228 613 Li detections, and 352 536 Li upper limits. Our abundance measurements are generally lower than GALAH DR3, with a mean difference of 0.23 dex. For the first time, we trace the evolution of Li-dip stars beyond the main sequence turn-off and up the subgiant branch. This is the first 3D NLTE analysis of Li applied to a large spectroscopic survey, and opens up a new era of precision analysis of abundances for large surveys. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The prevalence of cerebral palsy (CP) varies globally, with higher rates and burden of disease in low- and middle-income countries. CP is a lifelong condition with no cure, presenting diverse challenges such as motor impairment, epilepsy, and mental health disorders. Research progress has been made but more is needed, especially given consumer demands for faster advancements and improvements in the scientific evidence base for interventions. This paper explores three strategies to accelerate CP research: consumer engagement, global clinical trial networks, and adaptive designs. Consumer engagement involving individuals with lived experience enhances research outcomes. Global clinical trial networks provide efficiency through larger and more diverse participant pools. Adaptive designs, unlike traditional randomized controlled trials, allow real-time modifications based on interim analyses, potentially answering complex questions more efficiently. The establishment of a CP Global Clinical Trials Network, integrating consumer engagement, global collaboration, and adaptive designs, marks a paradigm shift. The Network aims to address consumer-set research priorities. While challenges like ethical considerations and capacity building exist, the potential benefits for consumers, clinicians, researchers, and funding bodies are substantial. This paper underscores the urgency of transforming CP research methodologies for quicker translation of novel treatments into clinical practice to improve quality of life for those with CP. Abstract

TP53 aberrations are found in approximately 10% of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and are considered early driver events affecting leukemia stem cells. In this study, we compared features of a total of 84 patients with these disorders seen at a tertiary cancer center. Clinical and cytogenetic characteristics as well as immunophenotypes of immature blast cells were similar between AML and MDS patients. Median overall survival (OS) was 226 days (95% confidence interval [CI], 131-300) for the entire cohort with an estimated 3-year OS rate of 11% (95% CI, 6-22). OS showed a significant difference between MDS (median, 345 days; 95% CI, 235-590) and AML patients (median, 91 days; 95% CI, 64-226) which is likely due to a different co-mutational pattern as revealed by next-generation sequencing. Transformation of TP53 aberrant MDS occurred in 60.5% of cases and substantially reduced their survival probability. Cox regression analysis revealed treatment class and TP53 variant allele frequency as prognostically relevant parameters but not the TP53-specific prognostic scores EAp53 and RFS. These data emphasize similarities between TP53 aberrant AML and MDS and support previous notions that they should be classified and treated as a distinct disorder. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

4MOST is a wide-field, high-multiplex spectroscopic survey facility under development for the VISTA telescope of the European Southern Observatory (ESO). Its main science drivers are in the fields of galactic archeology, high-energy physics, galaxy evolution and cosmology. 4MOST will in particular provide the spectroscopic complements to the large area surveys coming from space missions like Gaia, eROSITA, Euclid, and PLATO and from ground-based facilities like VISTA, VST, DES, LSST and SKA. The 4MOST baseline concept features a 2.5 degree diameter field-of-view with similar to 2400 fibres in the focal surface that are configured by a fibre positioner based on the tilting spine principle. The fibres feed two types of spectrographs; similar to 1600 fibres go to two spectrographs with resolution R> 5000 (lambda similar to 390-930 nm) and similar to 800 fibres to a spectrograph with R> 18,000 (lambda similar to 392-437 nm & 515-572 nm & 605-675 nm). Both types of spectrographs are fixed-configuration, three-channel spectrographs. 4MOST will have an unique operations concept in which 5 year public surveys from both the consortium and the ESO community will be combined and observed in parallel during each exposure, resulting in more than 25 million spectra of targets spread over a large fraction of the southern sky. The 4MOST Facility Simulator (4FS) was developed to demonstrate the feasibility of this observing concept. 4MOST has been accepted for implementation by ESO with operations expected to start by the end of 2020. This paper provides a top-level overview of the 4MOST facility, while other papers in these proceedings provide more detailed descriptions of the instrument concept[1], the instrument requirements development[2], the systems engineering implementation[3], the instrument model[4], the fibre positioner concepts[5], the fibre feed[6], and the spectrographs[7].
