The epidemic of lifestyle-dependent diseases and the failure of previous interventions to combat the main causes demand an alternative approach. Abdominal obesity is associated with most of these diseases and is a good target for therapeutic and preventive measures. Time-restricted feeding (TRF) offers a low-threshold, easy-to-implement lifestyle-modification concept with promising results from animal testing. Here, we describe a pilot study of TRF with abdominally obese participants (waist-to-height ratio, WHtR &ge, 0.5) in a general practitioner&rsquo, s office. Participants (n = 40, aged 49.1 ±, 12.4, 31 females) were asked to restrict their daily eating time to 8&ndash, 9 hours in order to prolong their overnight fasting period to 15&ndash, 16 hours. Questionnaires, anthropometrics, and blood samples were used at baseline and at follow-up. After three months of TRF, participants had reached the fasting target, on average, on 85.5 ±, 15.2% of all days recorded. Waist circumference (WC) was reduced by &minus, 5.3 ±, 3.1cm (p <, 0.001), and three participants reached a WHtR <, 0.5. HbA1c was diminished by &minus, 1.4 ±, 3.5 mmol/mol (p = 0.003). TRF may be an easily understandable and readily adoptable lifestyle change with the potential to reduce abdominal obesity and lower the risk for cardiometabolic diseases. Further well-designed studies are necessary to investigate the applicability and usefulness of TRF for public health.

The Hamburg City Health Study (HCHS) is a large, prospective, long-term, population-based cohort study and a unique research platform and network to obtain substantial knowledge about several important risk and prognostic factors in major chronic diseases. A random sample of 45,000 participants between 45 and 74 years of age from the general population of Hamburg, Germany, are taking part in an extensive baseline assessment at one dedicated study center. Participants undergo 13 validated and 5 novel examinations primarily targeting major organ system function and structures including extensive imaging examinations. The protocol includes validate self-reports via questionnaires regarding lifestyle and environmental conditions, dietary habits, physical condition and activity, sexual dysfunction, professional life, psychosocial context and burden, quality of life, digital media use, occupational, medical and family history as well as healthcare utilization. The assessment is completed by genomic and proteomic characterization. Beyond the identification of classical risk factors for major chronic diseases and survivorship, the core intention is to gather valid prevalence and incidence, and to develop complex models predicting health outcomes based on a multitude of examination data, imaging, biomarker, psychosocial and behavioral assessments. Participants at risk for coronary artery disease, atrial fibrillation, heart failure, stroke and dementia are invited for a visit to conduct an additional MRI examination of either heart or brain. Endpoint assessment of the overall sample will be completed through repeated follow-up examinations and surveys as well as related individual routine data from involved health and pension insurances. The study is targeting the complex relationship between biologic and psychosocial risk and resilience factors, chronic disease, health care use, survivorship and health as well as favorable and bad prognosis within a unique, large-scale long-term assessment with the perspective of further examinations after 6 years in a representative European metropolitan population. There is growing awareness among people living in developing countries of the importance of healthy lifestyles. Farmers’ markets (FMs) are a rather new type of market in Indonesia, succeeding traditional and modern markets. They began to appear in 2006 in Bali and were established in Yogyakarta in the early 2010s. This article contributes to limited research in this area by presenting a qualitative analysis of market participants with three main aims: to explore the meanings of local and healthy food from the vendors’/managers’ perspective, to identify the vendors’/managers’ motives for using FMs, and to examine the mechanisms underpinning the performance of FMs. I found no consensus regarding the meanings of local and healthy food. Instead, market participants have a geographically wide concept of ‘local’ that includes perceived high-quality (and healthy) raw materials from all over the Indonesian Archipelago. To assure the quality of food from such distant sources, formal and informal market mechanisms are used in Greater Yogyakarta FMs, as evidenced by the unique practices designed by the markets’ vendors and managers., Austrian Journal of South-East Asian Studies, Vol 12 No 1 (2019)

Lifestyles revolve around the following dimensions: recreation, culture, and lifeplanning. They also involve aspects of family life, especially with respect to the relevance of the goal of starting a family and the fulfillment of this part of life. However, questions about the division of lifestyles into types of households and families had yet to be addressed by family sociology, they are the focus of this study. Based on the 1998 ALLBUS, a lifestyle typology was developed and applied to kinds of households and families. The results showed that, contrary to frequently expressed expectations, the greatest diversity of lifestyles is found in the middle-aged groups and in the group of young singles or childless , couples' households. At the same time, attitudes about the the importance of family are influenced primarily by life-cycle effects and not lifestyletype.

The terms post-growth or degrowth refer to models that call for changes in global and local lifestyles and economic practices to lead to less consumption. Supporters of the growth critique share the conviction that sustainable development in the future requires forms of economy and society that function independently of economic growth. An important aspect of the real-life implementation of post-growth models is often an alternative approach to handling time. The compulsion for growth and consumption, it is often argued, leads to acceleration, to an individual lack of time and to mental stress. The consequence is either an increase in speed (e. g. of production, transport, consumption, information) or the simultaneous synchronisation of processes, i. e. the compression of time. By reducing hours of gainful employment, supporters of post-growth models like Paech or Felber argue, lifestyles can be rendered less consumer-oriented, more sufficient and more ecological. There are links between the discussions on temporal justice and those on post-growth and these connections emerge clearly when the delivery of basic needs in urban areas is considered. This paper is concerned with the parallels and differences between the discourses. The approaches are compared and three selected projects that can be said to be inspired by the notion of a post-growth society are discussed as case studies. In this way the investigation examines the extent to which the two discourses complement one another and whether together they can support more sustainable urban development. The three case studies are the Co-Working Space Impact Hub in Munich, das Haus der Eigenarbeit (HEi) (an "open workshop"), and the housing association WOGENO in Munich, which is committed to following fundamental social and ecological principles.

(DIPF/Orig.) This article outlines the rediscovery of biography research as a scholarly approach to reconstructive social research in the so-called qualitative turn and its evolution into a recognised method in Educational Science and Media Pedagogy. Starting with a discussion of biography as a concept, the article provides a brief history of biography research before moving on to address the central questions, problems and contentious issues in biography research. This then leads into a discussion of the media-biographical method as a specialist approach. The article then concludes by taking the perspective of teaching methodology to briefly look ahead to the way in which research and teaching can be combined. The focus here is on the connection between theory and practice as part of a narrative approach to education, the goal of which is to enable learning through (life-)stories. (DIPF/Orig.)

This paper looks at the roles of technologies and other factors in lifestyle choices, travel patterns and behaviours. Building on earlier Roundtable reports on value of time, it discusses how recent behavioural changes might affect the disutility of time spent travelling relative to time spent on other activities. The paper concludes with a discussion on the implications for policy practitioners around modelling and assessing value of travel time savings.

Background Prevention aiming at smoking, alcohol consumption, and BMI could potentially bring large gains in life expectancy (LE) and health expectancy measures such as Healthy Life Years (HLY) and Life Expectancy in Good Perceived Health (LEGPH) in the European Union. However, the potential gains might differ by region. Methods A Sullivan life table model was applied for 27 European countries to calculate the impact of alternative scenarios of lifestyle behavior on life and health expectancy. Results were then pooled over countries to present the potential gains in HLY and LEGPH for four European regions. Results Simulations show that up to 4 years of extra health expectancy can be gained by getting all countries to the healthiest levels of lifestyle observed in EU countries. This is more than the 2 years to be gained in life expectancy. Generally, Eastern Europe has the lowest LE, HLY, and LEGPH. Even though the largest gains in LEPGH and HLY can also be made in Eastern Europe, the gap in LE, HLY, and LEGPH can only in a small part be closed by changing smoking, alcohol consumption, and BMI. Conclusion Based on the current data, up to 4 years of good health could be gained by adopting lifestyle as seen in the best-performing countries. Only a part of the lagging health expectancy of Eastern Europe can potentially be solved by improvements in lifestyle involving smoking and BMI. Before it is definitely concluded that lifestyle policy for alcohol use is of relatively little importance compared to smoking or BMI, as our findings suggest, better data should be gathered in all European countries concerning alcohol use and the odds ratios of overconsumption of alcohol. (DIPF/Orig.), After a brief insight into the history of the Documentary Method, the authors give an overview regarding its general characteristics. Then, they will highlight the contribution of the Documentary Method towards empirical media research, especially concerning the relation between product analysis and reception analysis. Thereby, we also focus on the perspectives of Cultural Studies. The authors own methodical approach is demonstrated by empirical examples with a special focus on the integration of product and reception analysis. Finally, the conclusion refers to methodical-methodological challenges of Media Pedagogy. (DIPF/Orig.)

This study concentrates on the analysis of early works by Rudyard Kipling who was born into the family of English colonists to India, thus becoming a representative of the newly formed Anglo-Indian society. The writer’s sketch Anglo-Indian Society (1887) and his collection of short stories Plain Tales from the Hills (1888) depict the characteristic features of Anglo-Indians’ worldview and lifestyle, which are revealed and analyzed by the author of the article. Special attention is paid to biographical factors influencing the author’s choice of Anglo-Indian topic at the beginning of his writing career. The researcher concludes that Kipling presents in his works an outline of Anglo-Indian society which emerged from the writer’s observations of Anglo-Indians’ lives during his work as a reporter. Striving for credibility in consideration of advantages and shortcomings of Anglo-Indian worldview and lifestyle, the author tries to occupy the position of the unconcerned observer, being capable of assessing the situation with fresh mind. Kipling disguises himself under the image of the hero-narrator, being either a tourist traveler from abroad, or a reporter, accustomed to collecting factual material for the local paper, in such a way receiving an opportunity to speak ironically and sometimes even sarcastically about certain models of behavior, accepted by Anglo-Indians.

327. Mode of the Past or Promise for the Future? Cycling in China and the Sustainability Challenge, 1955–Present

- Abstract
Since the 1950s, cycling policy in China has gone through three phases: from active encouragement (1955–1994) and systematic discouragement (1994–2008) to neglect and ambivalence (since the 2010s). Parallel to the expansion of automobility, the country has been unique in its development of innovations in electric-powered two-wheelers and a vibrant e-cycling practice since the 1980s. Electric bikes have given over 300 million low-status commuters and peddlers access to jobs and housing, even though planners have dismissed them as a problematic ›floating population‹ and remnants of the past. Given China’s current urban sustainable mobility challenges and ambition to become the world’s first ›Ecological Civilization‹ (2013), China’s bicycle industry, e-vehicle manufacturers, and the e-commerce sector may offer an alternative to the US-based ›car civilization‹ if ecological (e-cycles) and social (low-status workers) sustainability are brought into one analytical frame., Seit den 1950er-Jahren hat die chinesische Fahrrad-Politik drei Phasen durchlaufen: von aktiver Förderung (1955–1994) über systematische Behinderung (1994–2008) bis zu Vernachlässigung und Ambivalenz (ab etwa 2010).

- Abstract
Numerous empirical studies have confirmed that married people have a lower risk of morbidity and mortality than unmarried people. However, there is relatively little existing research on the impact of marital status and partnerships on the health behaviour of elderly people in Europe. This study examines the association between partnership status and health-related behaviour among the German population in the second half of life (aged 40-85). We focus on four indicators of health behaviour: smoking, physical activity, body weight, and health check-ups. The data used in the analysis come from the 2008 (n=6,205) and 2014 (n=6,002) waves of the German Ageing Survey (DEAS). We applied logistic regression models with average marginal effects (AME). The results of our analysis are in line with the findings of previous studies, which indicated that being married has a protective effect on smoking and a negative effect on body weight. Crisis effects are found to be limited primarily to smoking by recently widowed people. Our study provides new empirical insights into the extent to which being married has protective effects on the use of health care, as people who are separated, divorced, or never married are found to be less likely to have regular health check-ups compared to married people. Furthermore, our results for physical activity are contrary to previous findings for younger adults, according to which being married is associated with a lower likelihood of participating in physical activities. The results of the data analyses show that at ages 40 and older, unmarried individuals, especially those who are not in a partnership, are at higher risk of physical inactivity than their married counterparts. Our findings on marital status and partnership status therefore demonstrate that being married is strongly associated with positive health behaviours. The results may be useful for designing health programmes or prevention measures.

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract
März 2017 in Berlin stattfand. Material artifacts such as clothes, magazines or posters, are produced, used, and (re-)interpreted in scene specific ways. Therefore, they can be described as a corner stone of the formation and transformation of youth culture specific styles and self-representations. These phenomena were the focal point of the interdisciplinary conference: "Construction of Styles Within Scenes." It was organized by the research group "Techniques of Adolescent Bricolage" and held in March 2017 in Berlin, Germany. The conference contributions focused on a wide range of topics, such as media representations, esthetics, and the role of artifacts and objects within the practices of youth culture. They approached these topics from a variety of angles, including perspectives on social inequality as well as comparative historical and contemporary analyses. After a short introduction to the field of youth culture research, we describe the thematic core areas as well as the main results of the conference. Additionally, we provide an overview of present perspectives on youth culture and scene research.

- Abstract
For over two decades, the 'information revolution' in the Middle East has been framed overwhelmingly in terms of media, more of it, and in comparisons to mass media - from the advent of any-to-any communication to ad hoc conceptualizations such as 'crowd-sourcing' or 'citizen journalism' - that register the multiplication of voices, channels and eroding boundaries in spheres of communication. The record has expanded more than conceptualizations of its sociologies in media and communications studies. It’s time for other questions that elicit additional and more basic features of Internet practices from choices that shape individual repertoires and participation to continuities between users and producers to how actual practices scale up, which actually link micro and macro processes. To elicit these broader sociologies, and move beyond the limited social physics of 'impact' of the Internet on culture and lifestyles, I draw on the related sociologies of reference group and network theory, on Science-Technology-Society studies and sociolinguistics to bring disruption of existing institutions, on the one hand, and cooptation by them, on the other, into more unified theory of the play of information revolution in culture and lifestyles on the Internet.

- Abstract
Over the last 50 years the life courses of young people and their family formation behavior have undergone dramatic changes. Childbearing outside marriage, whether to single mothers or cohabiters, is one of the most prominent indicators of this process. This study outlines the development of childbearing outside of marriage in Europe since the 1960s. Changes in women‘s role in society are identified as the key factor driving this development. Utilizing the full potential of multi-level modeling the study finds that parents' decision making is mediated by country specific welfare arrangements. In particular, the degree to which women can utilize their socioeconomic resources in the labor market plays a key role in the decision whether or not to marry the father of their child., In den letzten 50 Jahren haben sich die Lebensverläufe junger Menschen und ihre Familienbildung dramatisch verändert.

- Abstract
In the past 40 years there has been an increase in second-hand consumption among consumers (Guiot and Roux 2010), since the ‘shame and stigma associated with second-hand consumption’ disappeared and second-hand goods became ‘cool’ and ‘stylish’ (Franklin 2011, 156). In Germany, for example, the turnover of goods sold in second-hand retail outlets is expected to increase from €1.902 mio in 2012 to €2.198 mio in 2020 (Statista n.d.). Second-hand consumption is a niche form of consumption and therefore does not correspond to the norm (Crewe and Gregson 2003; Williams and Paddock 2003). Second-hand goods can be distinguished from new goods because they are pre-used and pre-owned (Luchs et al. 2011). They are usually less expensive than new products and have some traces of wear-and-tear (Estelami and Raymundo 2012). Several forms of second-hand consumption exist. These range from ‘car boot sales, charity shops, auctions, online auctions, seller websites, vintage and other second-hand shops, nearly new sales to bric-a-brac stalls run by charities or non-profit community organisations such as churches and schools’ (Waight 2013a, 299). Although these places for second-hand exchange are shaped by both buyers and sellers (Gregson and Crewe 2003, 3), the professionalisation of second-hand charity shops has taken place recently. In particular, professional online platforms such as Ubup have revolutionised the second-hand market. Ubup is a second-hand retailer that buys second-hand clothes, and then checks, photographs and labels the clothes online for a professional customer experience, just as in a regular online shop for new clothes (Ubup, n.d). Second-hand shops of all forms are increasingly attempting to copy traditional retail practices (Gregson and Crewe 2003, 75).

- Abstract
Consumer critique stretches back almost to the beginning of the consumer society itself, including Veblen’s (1899) analysis of consumption for display among the nouveau riche, Adorno and Horkheimer (1944), who argued that consumers are trapped and manipulated by the capitalist system, and Galbraith (1958), who claimed, among other things, that producers create artificial desires that do not contribute to the well-being of consumers (Schor 2007). In recent decades, much of the consumer critique has also incorporated an ecological dimension. Jackson (2009) and others have argued that continued growth in global consumption is incompatible with sustainable development and that changes in values and priorities are required to tackle society’s longterm challenges.

- Abstract

Glyptis S. A. (1981) Leisure life-styles, Reg. Studies 15, 311–326. This paper examines the life-styles and leisure activity patterns of a sample (595) of countryside visitors in the Hull area. Details of individuals' activities, use of time, companions and perception of pursuits as “work” or “leisure” were obtained from time budget diaries. For several activities participation rates differed significantly from the population averages shown by national and regional participation surveys, suggesting that certain elements in the life-styles of countryside visitors distinguish them from the population at large. This is further endorsed by an analysis of participant profiles and a classification of life-styles, which revealed fewer distinctions in the activity patterns of different social classes than population figures would lead one to expect. This paper concludes by discussing the implications of these findings for leisure providers and further research. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Background: Health-related lifestyle behaviors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity and obesity are major cardiovascular risk factors. Previous studies have mostly demonstrated a favorable association between religiosity and these cardiovascular risk factors, however, no studies have investigated this relationship in Polish immigrants. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to examine the association between health-related lifestyle behaviors and religiosity in Polish immigrants in Germany. Methods: The smoking patterns, frequency of alcohol consumption, physical activity, and presence of overweight/obesity were assessed in 257 first-generation immigrants of Polish origin living in Germany. Religiosity was measured with the Centrality of Religiosity Scale (CRS, Huber, 2003) consisting of 15 items that categorized the respondents into intrinsically, extrinsically, and not/marginally religious. Results: After adjusting for various sociodemographic, migration, and health-related characteristics, intrinsic religiosity was significantly associated with a lower risk of being a smoker (odds ratios (OR) = 0.34, confidence intervals (CI) = 0.15&ndash, 0.76) and was also associated with a lower risk of alcohol consumption (OR = 0.33, CI = 0.15&ndash, 0.71), but a higher risk of being overweight/obese (OR = 2.53, CI = 1.15&ndash, 5.56) in comparison with extrinsic/marginal religiosity. No significant relationship was found between religiosity and physical activity. Conclusions: In Polish immigrants, intrinsic religiosity acts as a protective factor against some cardiovascular risk factors (smoking and alcohol consumption).
