This paper presents a maximum likelihood estimation method for imperfectly observed Gibbsian fields on a finite lattice. This method is an adaptation of the algorithm given in Younes [28]. Presentation of the new algorithm is followed by a theorem about the limit of the second derivative of the likelihood when the lattice increases, which is related to convergence of the method. Some practical remarks about the implementation of the procedure are eventually given.

We propose an algorithm achieving the matching of two point sets with unknown correspondence via the joint clustering of the two sets and estimation of a diffeomorphism linking the cluster centers via geodesic splines.

One of the central problems in automated target recognition is to accommodate the infinite variety of clutter in real military environments. Our principle focus is to construct a metric space where the metric measures the distance between objects of interest invariant to the infinite variety of clutter. Such metrics are formulated using second-order random field models.

Diffeomorphic non-rigid registration of shapes is a very difficult problem. We use the point-set representation for shapes since statistical shape analysis in this space is relatively straightforward. Diffeomorphic matching of point-sets requires an automated solution to the very difficult correspondence problem. We describe a joint clustering and diffeomorphism estimation strategy which allows us to simultaneously estimate the correspondence and fit a diffeomorphism between two unlabeled point-sets. Essentially, the cluster centers in each point-set are always in correspondence by virtue of having the same index. During clustering, the cluster center counterparts in each point-set are linked by a diffeomorphism and hence are forced to move in lock-step with one another. Experimental results are shown for 2D corpus callosum point-sets.

Over the past several years our group has been studying biological shape in the emerging new discipline of computational anatomy (CA). CA consists of several components: (i) the construction of coordinatized anatomical manifolds, (ii) comparison of anatomical manifolds, and (iii) inference of morphometric change on anatomical manifolds. In this paper we focus on (ii) the comparison of anatomical shapes and structures in imagery via metric mapping. The purpose of this paper is to examine the generation of the geodesics associated with the metric from several points of view, the first the Euler equation describing the geodesic diffeomorphic flow, and the second the variational formulation of the geodesic in terms of the minimizing flow of vector fields which generate them.

International audience; We introduce a new model addressing feature selection from a large dictionary of variables that can be computed from a signal or an image. Features are extracted according to an efficiency criterion, on the basis of specified classification or recognition tasks. This is done by estimating a probability distribution P on the complete dictionary, which distributes its mass over the more efficient, or informative, components. We implement a stochastic gradient descent algorithm, using the probability as a state variable and optimizing a multi-task goodness of fit criterion for classifiers based on variable randomly chosen according to P. We then generate classifiers from the optimal distribution of weights learned on the training set. The method is first tested on several pattern recognition problems including face detection, handwritten digit recognition, spam classification and micro-array analysis. We then compare our approach with other step-wise algorithms like random forests or recursive feature elimination.

This thesis takes place in the context of image matching within the framework of large deformation diffeomorphisms. With important applications to medical imaging and computational anatomy, this approach uses the action of diffeomorphisms groups in order to classify images. One of the first issue to deal with is to compute the distance between objects on which can act the group of diffeomorphisms. The case of discontinuous images was very partially understood. The first part of this thesis is devoted to fully tackle the case of discontinuous images in any dimension. Namely the images are assumed to be functions of bounded variations. We have provided technical tools to deal with discontinuous images within the diffeomorphism framework. The first application developed is a Hamiltonian formulation of the geodesic equations for a new model including a change of contrast in the images which is represented by an action of a diffeomorphism on the values of the level lines of the image. The second one is an extension of the metamorphosis framework developed by A.Trouvé and L.Younes to SBV functions, which points out that the geometry of such spaces is much more complicated than the one with smooth functions.The second part of the thesis takes place in the probabilistic side of the field. Taking advantage of the Hamiltonian formulation, we aim to study stochastic perturbations of the geodesic equations. From a physical point of view, the perturbation we consider affects the forces on the particles and not the speed of the particles. In some sense, this model could be an interesting dynamical model for growth of shapes or at least random evolution of shapes. We have proven that the solutions of the system in the case of landmarks are non exploding and that there exists a SDE in infinite dimension on a suitable Hilbert space (actually a sort of Besov or Sobolev space on a Haar basis) which extends the landmark case. In infinite dimension, the solutions are also defined for all times. Moreover an important convergence result of the landmark case to the infinite dimensional case is proven. Finally, let us precise that the structure of the noise is general enough to account for correlation between points of the curve in the noise.; Ce travail de thèse se situe dans le contexte de l'appariement d'images par difféomorphismes qui a été récemment développé dans le but d'applications à l'anatomie computationnelle et l'imagerie médicale. D'un point de vue mathématique, on utilise l'action de groupe de difféomorphismes de l'espace euclidien pour décrire la variabilité des formes biologiques. Le cas des images discontinues n'était compris que partiellement. La première contribution de ce travail est de traiter complètement le cas des images discontinues en considérant comme modèle d'image discontinues l'espace des fonctions à variations bornées. On apporte des outils techniques pour traiter les discontinuités dans le cadre d'appariement par difféomorphismes. Ces résultats sont appliqués à la formulation Hamiltonienne des géodésiques dans le cadre d'un nouveau modèle qui incorpore l'action d'un difféomorphisme sur les niveaux de grille de l'image pour prendre en compte un changement d'intensité. La seconde application permet d'étendre la théorie des métamorphoses développée par A.Trouvé et L.Younes aux fonctions discontinues. Il apparait que la géométrie de ces espaces est plus compliquée que pour des fonctions lisses.La seconde partie de cette thèse aborde des aspects plus probabilistes du domaine. On étudie une perturbation stochastique du système Hamiltonien pour le cas de particules (ou landmarks). D'un point de vue physique, on peut interpréter cette perturbation comme des forces aléatoires agissant sur les particules. Il est donc naturel de considérer ce modèle comme un premier modèle de croissance de forme ou au moins d'évolutions aléatoires de formes.On montre que les solutions n'explosent pas en temps fini presque sûrement et on étend ce modèle stochastique en dimension infinie sur un espace de Hilbert bien choisi (en quelque sorte un espace de Besov ou Sobolev sur une base de Haar). En dimension infinie la propriété précédente reste vraie et on obtient un important (aussi d'un point de vue numérique) résultat de convergence du cas des particules vers le cas de dimension infinie. Le cadre ainsi développé est suffisamment général pour être adaptable dans de nombreuses situations de modélisation.

We will present matching techniques for several kinds of objects. We fill first deal with geodesic matching of objects, which consists in defining a geodesic distance on the object set considered as a Riemannian manifold. This distance will have to take into account the action of a group of deformations on the object set and be invariant with respect to this group action. We will use this technique for the matching of images on which a group of diffeomorphisms acts. We will deduce an algorithm that will be improved by a multiresolution strategy. We will also use this geodesic distance to match features such as points or vectors thanks to a spline based modeling of the deformation. Finally, we will present some matching techniques for feature sets which allows a one to one pairing of the features., On présentera des techniques de mise en correspondance de divers types d'objets. On s'intéressera dans un premier temps à la mise en correspondance géodésique d'objets qui consiste, par le biais de l'action d'un groupe de déformation sur un ensemble d'objets, à définir une distance géodésique sur la variété riemannienne formée par l'ensemble en question, qui soit invariante par l'action de groupe considérée. Dans un premier temps, on s'intéressera à la mise en correspondance d'images sur lesquelles agissent des difféomorphismes. On en déduira un algorithme que l'on perfectionnera par une stratégie multi échelle. On adaptera cette technique de mise en correspondance géodésique à des objets tels que des points ou des vecteurs grâce à une modélisation de la déformation à base de splines. Enfin, on présentera des techniques de mise en correspondance d'ensembles de primitives avec appariement des primitives une à une.

The purpose of this thesis is the detection of deformable structures and the estimation of their motion. This work is applied to satellite imagery, and specifically focused on meteorological infrared images. On these images, the structures of interest are clouds. A markovian model is proposed to locate these structures. This model captures cloud structures with homogeneity and regularity properties.The second part of this work introduces a novel method for motion estimation. The classical hypothesis underlying motion estimation is the invariance of brightness of each point during its displacement. This hypothesis is not valid in the context of our work. We therefore propose a method based on the invariance of moving objects' total brightness. Applied to clouds on infrared data, this hypothesis is proved to be equivalent to the invariance of volume. We demonstrate that this leads to a constraint strictly equivalent to the equation of mass conservation in fluid mechanisms. This partial differential equation is then solved within a variational framework. Two alternatives are proposed, the first one using a prior affine motion model, the second unifying the two invariance principles mentioned above.These methods are applied to the reconstruction of clouds' trajectories. A framework is proposed to analyse these trajectories: it is based on a decomposition of trajectories on a spline functions basis, this decomposition being plugged into a data analysis system; L'objet de cette thèse est la détection et l'estimation du mouvement d'objets déformables. Ce travail a été appliqué à l'imagerie satellitaire. Nous nous sommes particulièrement intéressés aux images infrarouges météorologiques. Sur de telles images, les structures en mouvement sont les nuages. Pour localiser ces structures, nous utilisons un modèle markovien de segmentation qui intègre des propriétés d'homogénéité et de régularité caractérisant les structures nuageuses. Ce modèle markovien fonctionne comme un processus de croissance de région avec un procédé automatique d'estimation des paramètres du modèle.Dans une seconde partie, nous proposons une méthode originale pour l'estimation du mouvement. Au lieu de supposer l'invariance de l'intensité lumineuse de chaque point au cours de son déplacement, hypothèse classiquement faite mais non vérifiée dans notre contexte, nous supposons l'invariance de l'intensité lumineuse totale d'un objet. Dans le contexte d'images infrarouges nous montrons que l'hypothèse d'invariance de l'intensité lumineuse totale équivaut à une hypothèse de conservation du volume des nuages. Nous montrons également que cette dernière hypothèse mène à une nouvelle contrainte qui est exactement l'équation de la conservation de la masse, utilisée en mécanique des fluides. Un formalisme variationnel est utilisé pour la résolution de cette équation aux dérivées partielles. Deux variantes de ce modèle sont également proposées, intégrant des modèles affines de mouvement ou unifiant les deux principes d'invariances précédement cités.Finalement, ces méthodes permettent de reconstruire avec précision les trajectoires des nuages au cours du temps. Dans une dernière partie prospective, nous proposons une méthode simple d'analyse des trajetoires des nuages basée sur une décomposition sur une base de spline et des procédés d’analyse de données de ces décompositions.
