Artikkelit - Abstract
The silver cauldron from Gundestrup Mose, a bog in northern Jutland, Denmark, is a unique piece of chased silver work, probably from the time around the birth of Christ. The decorations on the richly decorated cauldron have been embossed in very high relief and tooled to finish with a variety of punches. This paper is based on the identification and documentation of imprints of pattern punches occurring on the surface of the Gundestrup Cauldron. Silicone rubber impressions of tool marks on the vessel's surface have been the basis of the study. By identifying and comparing the individual tool marks, we can in certain instances verify or invalidate a stylistic/iconographic evaluation. Perhaps one day we shall finally be able to establish the provenance of the cauldron by comparing its tool marks with those of tools represented on other objects.

Tracing the tools by their traces. Identification and documentation of tool marks - illustrated through punch-decorated objects from the Early Germanic Iron Age. During excavation at Sejlflod near Tofthøj a very rich woman's grave was found in the summer of 1979, among the contents of which were a sheet-silver fibula and two deltashaped pendants (fig. 1). The grave is dated to the Early Germanic Iron Age. Idenfication and comparison showed that 11 different punches had been used on the three silver ornaments. By making silicone-rubber impressions of the surfaces of the ornamented objects, and then documenting the tool traces, both optically and by scanning microphotographs, it was possible to identify the microstructure of the 11 different punches which had been used in decorating the three sheet-silver objects in the grave. The appearance of the punches is documented with scanning-electron-microscope (SEM) photographs (fig. 11). It is noteworthy that three different punches: B, F and G, each occur on all three of the investigated objects (fig. 12). The sheet-silver fibula and the two pendants were thus produced with the same set of tools, and there is good reason to conclude that all three were made by the same person. The method of analysis here described could, if systematically used, give new and better possibilities of evaluating the interdependence of our ornamented objects from prehistoric times. Common Fishery Policy ,Individual Transferable Quota ,Landing Obligation ,Unavoidable, Unwanted Catches ,14. Life underwater ,discards ,Minimum Conservation Reference Size - Abstract
Executive Summary: This report is intended to contribute to a successful implementation of the landing obligation (LO) of the reformed Common Fisheries Policy of the EU. The work package focuses on how unavoidable, unwanted catches (UUC) can be utilised once they have been landed. The first step in that work is to provide an overview of current and expected supplies of UUC, where and when they will be landed, what are the available facilities and how the set-up is at the landing harbours to cope with changing supplies effected by the LO. This document addresses that by focusing on five selected fisheries, which will be key case studies in future work within the work package i.e. Bay of Biscay (landings in the Basque country), North Sea (Danish fleet) and Iceland. Landing and discarding statistics from the Mediterranean (bottom trawlers landing in Mallorca) and the English Channel (French fleet) are also analysed. The role of Iceland in this report is to provide an example of where a LO has been successfully in effect for decades. Estimating future landings of what used to be discarded under a policy regime that obliged fishermen to discard UUC cannot realistically take into consideration changes in behaviour of fishermen that inevitably will occur. Once the LO is implemented the fishermen will change their practises, for example by avoiding areas with high volumes of UUC or by applying more selective fishing gear. The historic discard data can therefore only give indications on what UUC are likely to be landed in certain areas, as well as when and by which fleets. The general results from all of the case studies is that relatively few species and fleets account for most of the discards. There are also in most fisheries very few harbours that stand out, representing vast majority of the discards. The available facilities are in most cases going to be sufficient to cope with changing supplies of catches intended for production of products for human consumption. Catches below Minimum Conservation Reference Size (MCRS) and other catches that cannot be utilised for direct human consumption will however present a challenge in many areas. Solutions for processing those materials will either have to be simple and inexpensive, or strategically located so that raw materials can easily be transported to them. The lessons learned from Iceland are that a successful implementation takes time and that economic incentives generally work best. Safety criteria’s relevant for UUC utilisation are fairly straightforward and need to apply to established rules and regulations. There is a fundamental difference in requirements for UUC intended for direct human consumption and catches that are used for other purposes, but traceability and documentation verifying that the products are safe are always required. When it comes to quality criteria’s requirements can be more subjective, as long as the products are safe., This is DiscardLess Project Delliverable Report 6.1 towards Strategies for the gradual elimination of discards in European fisheries., {"references":["77/1998. - Abstract
• The mucociliary function of the Eustachian tube was assessed in 44 patients with dry perforations of the tympanic membrane by means of the saccharin test. A saccharin crystal was placed on the mucous membrane of the middle ear as close to the orifice of the Eustachian tube as possible, and the time taken for the patient to taste the saccharin was measured. The function of the Eustachian tube was also assessed by means of the aspiration test and by the Valsalva maneuver. No relationship was found between the results of the saccharin test, aspiration test, and the Valsalva maneuver. However, a correlation seems to exist between the hearing improvement obtained as determined by the postoperative air-bone gap, the positive or negative results of the saccharin test, and (in cases with positive saccharin test) the saccharin perception time.(Arch Otolaryngol 102:539-541, 1976)

We exploit unique Norwegian day-by-day transaction and hour-by-hour bidding logs data in order to examine how market participants reacted to the spreading news of Covid-19 in early March 2020, the lockdown on March 12, and the re-opening on April 20. We observe changes on the date of the lockdown in transaction volumes, sell-prediction spreads, exploitative bidding behavior, and seller confidence. However, when we compare observed price developments with our estimated counter-factual price developments, we find that about half of the total fall in prices had already occurred before the lockdown was implemented. The re-opening completely reverses the lockdown effect on prices. We show that voluntary behavioral changes, as well as lockdown and re-opening effects, are visible in various measures of social mobility, and that changes in daily news sentiment correlate with the abnormal price movements during this period. • We exploit unique Norwegian day-by-day transaction and hour-by-hour bidding log data • The paper examine how market participants reacted to the spreading news of Covid-19 • Volumes, sell-prediction spreads, and behavioral measures change on the lockdown date • Voluntary behavioral changes prior to lockdown are visible in social mobility. • The reopening reversed the lockdown effect on prices. Common Fisheries Policy ,14. Life underwater ,discards - Abstract
Executive Summary This document is the second deliverable in work package 5 of the DiscardLess project. The project is intended to contribute to a successful implementation of the landing obligation of the reformed Common Fisheries Policy of the EU. The work package 5 addresses how unwanted, unavoidable catches can be handled on-board the fishing vessels i.e. from catch to first sale. The objective of this deliverable is to identify available alternatives and recommend the most applicable solutions for on-board handling of these unwanted, unavoidable catches for four different fleet segments in three case studies. The case studies are North Sea, Bay of Biscay and Northeast Atlantic (Iceland and UK), but the selection of vessels has taken into consideration transferability to other European fleets and areas. Practical and cost efficient solutions are identified, adapted and developed for four different fleet segments based on input from different tasks in the project (1.4, 5.1, 6.1 & 6.2) and stakeholder interaction. The fleet segments selected are 10-15 meter hook & line coastal vessels typically operated in Northeast Atlantic, 18-30 meter Danish seine/bottom trawl vessels typically operated in the North Sea and adjacent areas, 34-44 meter Bay of Biscay bottom trawlers typically operated by the Spanish fleet and finally 40-60 meter fresh-fish bottom trawlers used by most EU offshore fleets. Solutions for sorting, bleeding, cleaning, chilling, pre-processing, storing and other on-board handling are suggested and evaluated based on need, cost and applicability. Some parts of the work include elements of technological innovation, but most rely on exploiting currently available solutions, applying “best practice” technology and knowledge. Recommended solutions are presented on deck-plans (drawings) in order for stakeholders to get a clearer picture of the suggested changes. The work presented in this report focuses on the four previously mentioned fleet types that provide a relatively good cross-section of important EU fleets that are to be heavily affected by the landing obligation. It includes reviewing current setup of on-board handling where discarding is allowed and then identifies solutions applicable for those fleet types under a discard ban. The main challenges are connected to catches of juvenile fish, which cannot be utilised for direct human consumption. A number of alternatives are identified for each fleet segment and the most applicable solutions are discussed and demonstrated in detail e.g. in deck-plans, mas-balance calculations, cost/benefit assessment etc.

- Abstract
The projected increase in aquaculture production by 2030 will mostly occur in countries of Asia and Africa, including Bangladesh. The pangasius ( Pangasianodon hypophthalmus ) produced in Bangladesh, the second-largest producer globally, is mainly consumed by low-income domestic consumers and is poorly demanded in international markets. One reason for this is the yellow flesh of fish; consumers generally in mainstream international markets prefer to fish with white flesh. Reviewing secondary evidence and analyzing primary data, this article assesses the underlying reasons for the discolored pangasius flesh in Bangladesh and synthesizes strategies for avoiding discoloration to induce exports. The findings indicate that farming practices with high stocking density, infrequent water exchange, high organic matter in pond water, and the growth of carotenoid-containing cyanobacteria contribute to the discoloration of pangasius flesh. Artificial and natural pigments in feed and poor post-harvest handling of fish are also contributing factors. Furthermore, a positive correlation between water exchange, price, and yield at the farm is found, which indicates that farm-gate price and yield per hectare can increase with more frequent water exchange. The findings of this study provide strong evidence that improved aquaculture practices can solve the problem of discolored pangasius flesh and establish an export-oriented pangasius industry in Bangladesh., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest., (© 2021 Published by Elsevier Ltd.)

- Abstract
Purpose: Valproate-induced hyperammonemia (VHA) and hyperammonemic encephalopathy (VHE) are well-known complications of valproate (VPA) treatment. Currently recognised risk factors for VHE include a high VPA dosage, the need for polytherapy and long duration of treatment. Despite the severe nature of the epilepsy, presence of concomitant psychiatric manifestations, and frequent need for poly-pharmacy associated with juvenile ceroid lipofuscinosis (JNCL, Batten disease) neither this disorder nor other subtypes of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis have previously been identified as risk factors for VHA/VHE. The aim of the present publication is to describe four cases with VHE in a well-defined Danish population of JNCL., Method: An examination of medical records of all 35 patients with JNCL in Denmark was conducted and revealed fourteen patients treated with VPA., Results: Four patients treated with VPA developed VHE. All patients were prescribed VPA in standard dosages, had normal plasma concentrations of VPA and received antiepileptic drug (AED) polytherapy. Symptoms occurred shortly after commencement or increase in dose of VPA, and were quickly reversible upon discontinuation of VPA. Carnitine supplement was administrated in two patients, which resulted in resolution of symptoms and normalized ammonium levels., Conclusion: Patients with JNCL are in great risk of developing VHA and VHE due to a high rate of polytherapy. Furthermore, studies have shown that carnitine level can be depressed in JNCL, which may increase the risk of VHA and VHE. We recommend that increased attention should be given to these patients., (Copyright © 2014 British Epilepsy Association. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.)

- Abstract
Autoimmune sclerosing cholangitis is an overlap syndrome characterized by features of both autoimmune hepatitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis, the latter usually involving the large bile ducts. Autoimmune sclerosing cholangitis occurs more often in children than in adults and is frequently associated with inflammatory bowel disease, predominantly ulcerative colitis. We report a unique case of a 10-year-old Danish boy with severe small duct autoimmune sclerosing cholangitis and synchronic Crohn colitis. He was referred with a history of weight loss, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea. Biochemical anomalies included elevated alanine aminotransferase, γ-glutamyl transferase and immunoglobulin G levels and the presence of smooth muscle antibodies and perinuclear antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies but normal alkaline phosphatase. Liver biopsy specimen revealed features of both autoimmune hepatitis and sclerosing cholangitis, the latter characterized by acute, hyperplastic and destructive inflammation--granulocytic epithelial lesion--of the small ducts. Magnetic resonance cholangiography was normal. Colonoscopic biopsies showed chronic inflammatory changes of the caecum and the ascending and transverse colon compatible with Crohn disease. Ursodeoxycholic acid and immunosuppressive treatment was initiated and within four weeks of treatment the general condition improved. Normalization of aminotransferase was seen at 21 weeks and γ-glutamyl transferase at 72 weeks after first admittance, while immunoglobulin G remained slightly increased. - Abstract
Worldwide, much effort goes into performing optimal surgery in treatment of epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). However, the optimal timing (TI) of postoperative chemotherapy for ovarian cancer remains poorly defined. The relevant literature comprises seven studies with varying characteristics and includes different prognostic factors. The general supposition is that the time interval does not have a prognostic influence, but experimental studies have shown that it does affect cancer prognosis.

- Abstract
Worldwide, much effort is used every day to perform optimal surgery in the treatment of epithelial ovarian cancer. Treatment of ovarian cancer is a combination of surgery with optimal debulking followed by chemotherapy. However, the optimal timing of postoperative chemotherapy for ovarian cancer remains poorly defined. The literature is made up of seven studies performed in different ways and which have included varying prognostic factors. The general supposition is that the time interval (TI) does not have a prognostic influence but experimental studies have shown that it does affect the prognosis of the cancer. This commentary focuses on the importance of the TI between surgery and postoperative chemotherapy in this horrible disease.
