Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have achieved stateof-the-art performance for white matter (WM) tract segmentation based on diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI). These CNNs require a large number of manual delineations of the WM tracts of interest for training, which are generally labor-intensive and costly. The expensive manual delineation can be a particular disadvantage when novel WM tracts, i.e., tracts that have not been included in existing manual delineations, are to be analyzed. To accurately segment novel WM tracts, it is desirable to transfer the knowledge learned about existing WM tracts, so that even with only a few delineations of the novel WM tracts, CNNs can learn adequately for the segmentation. In this paper, we explore the transfer of such knowledge to the segmentation of novel WM tracts in the few-shot setting. Although a classic fine-tuning strategy can be used for the purpose, the information in the last task-specific layer for segmenting existing WM tracts is completely discarded. We hypothesize that the weights of this last layer can bear valuable information for segmenting the novel WM tracts and thus completely discarding the information is not optimal. In particular, we assume that the novel WM tracts can correlate with existing WM tracts and the segmentation of novel WM tracts can be predicted with the logits of existing WM tracts. In this way, better initialization of the last layer than random initialization can be achieved for fine-tuning. Further, we show that a more adaptive use of the knowledge in the last layer for segmenting existing WM tracts can be conveniently achieved by simply inserting a warmup stage before classic fine-tuning. Highly charged ions (HCIs) are promising candidates for the next generation of atomic clocks, owing to their tightly bound electron cloud, which significantly suppresses the common environmental disturbances to the quantum oscillator. Here we propose and pursue an experimental strategy that, while focusing on various HCIs of a single atomic element, keeps the number of candidate clock transitions as large as possible. Following this strategy, we identify four adjacent charge states of nickel HCIs that offer as many as six optical transitions. Experimentally, we demonstrated the essential capability of producing these ions in the low-energy compact Shanghai-Wuhan Electron Beam Ion Trap. We measured the wavelengths of four magnetic-dipole ($M$1) and one electric-quadrupole ($E$2) clock transitions with an accuracy of several ppm with a novel calibration method; two of these lines were observed and characterized for the first time in controlled laboratory settings. Compared to the earlier determinations, our measurements improved wavelength accuracy by an order of magnitude. Such measurements are crucial for constraining the range of laser wavelengths for finding the "needle in a haystack" narrow lines. In addition, we calculated frequencies and quality factors, evaluated sensitivity of these six transitions to the hypothetical variation of the electromagnetic fine structure constant $\alpha$ needed for fundamental physics applications. We argue that all the six transitions in nickel HCIs offer intrinsic immunity to all common perturbations of quantum oscillators, and one of them has the projected fractional frequency uncertainty down to the remarkable level of 10$^{-19}$., Comment: To be published in Physical Review A

High speed mid-wave infrared (MWIR) photodetectors have important applications in the emerging areas such high-precision frequency comb spectroscopy and light detection and ranging (LIDAR). In this work, we report a high-speed room-temperature mid-wave infrared interband cascade photodetector (ICIP) based on a type-II InAs/GaSb superlattice. The devices show an optical cut-off wavelength around 5um and a 3-dB bandwidth up to 7.04 GHz. The relatively low dark current density around 9.39 x 10-2 A/cm2 under -0.1 V is also demonstrated at 300 K. These results validate the advantages of ICIPs to achieve both high-frequency operation and low noise at room temperature. Limitations on the high-speed performance of the detector are also discussed based on the S-parameter analysis and other RF performance measurement.

The LOw-Frequency ARray (LOFAR) has recently conducted a survey (LOFAR Tied-Array All-sky Survey; LOTAAS) for pulsars in the Northern hemisphere that resulted in discoveries of 73 new pulsars. For the purpose of studying the properties of these pulsars, we search for their $\gamma$-ray counterparts using the all-sky survey data obtained with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope (Fermi).We analyze the LAT data for 70 LOTAAS pulsars (excluding two millisecond pulsars and one with the longest known spin period of 23.5s). We find one candidate counterpart to PSRJ1017$+$30, which should be searched for the $\gamma$-ray pulsation signal once its timing solution is available. For other LOTAAS pulsars, we derive their 0.3--500GeV flux upper limits. In order to compare the LOTAAS pulsars with the known $\gamma$-ray pulsars, we also derive the 0.3--500GeV $\gamma$-ray fluxes for 112 of the latter contained in the Fermi LAT fourth source catalog.Based on the properties of the $\gamma$-ray pulsars, we derive upper limits on the spin-down luminosities of the LOTAAS pulsars. The upper limits are not very constraining but help suggest that most of the LOTAAS pulsars probably have $< 10^{33}$erg s$^{-1}$ spin-down luminosities and are not expected to be detectable with Fermi LAT., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

Time and frequency transfer lies at the heart of the field of metrology. Compared to current microwave dissemination such as GPS, optical domain dissemination can provide more than one order of magnitude in terms of higher accuracy, which allows for many applications such as the redefinition of the second, tests of general relativity and fundamental quantum physics, precision navigation and quantum communication. Although optical frequency transfer has been demonstrated over thousand kilometers fiber lines, intercontinental time comparison and synchronization still requires satellite free space optical time and frequency transfer. Quite a few pioneering free space optical time and frequency experiments have been implemented at the distance of tens kilometers at ground level. However, there exists no detailed analysis or ground test to prove the feasibility of satellite-based optical time-frequency transfer. Here, we analyze the possibility of this system and then provide the first-step ground test with high channel loss. We demonstrate the optical frequency transfer with an instability of $10^{-18}$ level in 8,000 seconds across a 16-km free space channel with a loss of up to 70~dB, which is comparable with the loss of a satellite-ground link at medium earth orbit (MEO) and geostationary earth orbit (GEO)., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures
