- Abstract
The northeastern Lau Basin is one of the fastest opening and magmatically most active back‐arc regions on Earth. Although the current pattern of plate boundaries and motions in this complex mosaic of microplates is reasonably understood, the internal structure and evolution of the back‐arc crust are not. We present new geophysical data from a 290 km long east‐west oriented transect crossing the Niuafo'ou Microplate (back‐arc), the Fonualei Rift and Spreading Center (FRSC) and the Tofua Volcanic Arc at 17°20′S. Our Pwave tomography model and density modeling suggest that past crustal accretion inside the southern FRSC was accommodated by a combination of arc crustal extension and magmatic activity. The absence of magnetic reversals inside the FRSC supports this and suggests that focused seafloor spreading has until now not contributed to crustal accretion. The back‐arc crust constituting the southern Niuafo'ou Microplate reveals a heterogeneous structure comprising several crustal blocks. Some regions of the back‐arc show a crustal structure similar to typical oceanic crust, suggesting they originate from seafloor spreading. Other crustal blocks resemble a structure that is similar to volcanic arc crust or a “hydrous” type of oceanic crust that has been created at a spreading center influenced by slab‐derived water at distances <50 km to the arc. Throughout the back‐arc region, we observe a high‐velocity (Vp 7.2–7.5 km s−1) lower crust, which is an indication for magmatic underplating, which is likely sustained by elevated upper mantle temperatures in this region. First insights into the crustal structure of the northeastern Lau Basin, along a 290 km transect at 17°20′SCrust in southern Fonualei Rift and Spreading Center was created by extension of arc crust and variable amount of magmatismMagmatic underplating is present in some parts of the southern Niuafo'ou Microplate

13. Climate action - Abstract
Spreading centers in the proximity of back‐rolling subduction zones constitute an ideal natural laboratory to investigate the interaction of magmatism and tectonism during the early evolution of back‐arc basins. Using 32 days of ocean bottom seismometer data, we located 697 micro‐earthquakes at the southern Fonualei Rift and Spreading Center (S‐FRSC). The majority of epicenters concentrate along the central region of the axial valley, marking the active ridge axis. Only odd events were associated with the prominent faults bounding the axial valley. About 450 events are spatially clustered around 17°42′S and their waveforms show a pronounced similarity. Most of these events are associated with a 138 h lasting earthquake swarm. The tectonic structure of the ridge axis in the S‐FRSC resembles a series of left‐stepping en echelon segments, expressed at the seafloor by numerous volcanic ridges. The recorded earthquake swarm is located at the stepover of two en echelon segments suggesting that the earthquake swarm is mainly tectonically driven. The events directly beneath our seismic network indicate a maximum depth of brittle faulting down to about 14 km below the seafloor. This is within the maximum depth range of brittle faulting at ultraslow mid‐ocean ridges. Since the thickness of the brittle lithosphere is mainly controlled by temperature, our results suggest a sub‐axial thermal structure similar to that of ultraslow mid‐ocean ridges of similar opening rates., Key Points: Microseismicity is focused in the axial valley along the spreading axis and coincides with volcanic ridges and lava flows. An earthquake swarm is located at the stepover of two en echelon segments. The swarm is mainly controlled by tectonism. The brittle axial lithosphere is about 14 km thick, which is in agreement with mid‐ocean ridges of similar spreading rates., Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) http://dx.doi.org/10.13039/501100002347, GEOMAR Helmholtz‐Zentrum für Ozeanforschung Kiel http://dx.doi.org/10.13039/501100003153

SURFACE fault ruptures , *TSUNAMIS , *GEOLOGIC faults , *EARTHQUAKES , *SUBDUCTION zones - Abstract
Seismic rupture of the shallow plate-boundary can result in large tsunamis with tragic socio-economic consequences, as exemplified by the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake. To better understand the processes involved in shallow earthquake rupture in seismic gaps (where megathrust earthquakes are expected), and investigate the tsunami hazard, it is important to assess whether the region experienced shallow earthquake rupture in the past. However, there are currently no established methods to elucidate whether a margin segment has repeatedly experienced shallow earthquake rupture, with the exception of mechanical studies on subducted fault-rocks. Here we combine new swath bathymetric data, unpublished seismic reflection images, and inter-seismic seismicity to evaluate if the pattern of permanent deformation in the marine forearc of the Northern Chile seismic gap allows inferences on past earthquake behavior. While the tectonic configuration of the middle and upper slope remains similar over hundreds of kilometers along the North Chilean margin, we document permanent extensional deformation of the lower slope localized to the region 20.8°S–22°S. Critical taper analyses, the comparison of permanent deformation to inter-seismic seismicity and plate-coupling models, as well as recent observations from other subduction-zones, including the area that ruptured during the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake, suggest that the normal faults at the lower slope may have resulted from shallow, possibly near-trench breaking earthquake ruptures in the past. In the adjacent margin segments, the 1995 Antofagasta, 2007 Tocopilla, and 2014 Iquique earthquakes were limited to the middle and upper-slope and the terrestrial forearc, and so are upper-plate normal faults. Our findings suggest a seismo-tectonic segmentation of the North Chilean margin that seems to be stable over multiple earthquake cycles. If our interpretations are correct, they indicate a high tsunami hazard posed by the yet un-ruptured southern segment of the seismic gap. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Forearc structures of the eastern Sunda Arc are studied by new multichannel reflection seismic profiling. We image a high along-strike variability of the subducting oceanic plate, the interface between subducting and overriding plate, the accretionary wedge, the outer arc high and forearc basins. We highlight ongoing tectonic activity of the entire outer arc high: active out-of-sequence thrust faults connecting the plate interface with the seafloor, slope basins showing tilted sedimentary sequences on the outer arc high, vertical displacement of young seafloor sediments, and tilted sedimentary sequences in the Lombok forearc basin. While frontal accretion plays a minor role, the growth of the outer arc high is mainly attributed to oceanic sediments and crustal fragments, which are attached to the base of the upper plate and recycled within the forearc. We image ongoing large-scale duplex formation of the oceanic crust. The incoming oceanic crust is dissected by normal faulting into 5–10km wide blocks within a 50–70km wide belt seaward of the deep sea trench. These blocks determine the geometry and evolution of duplexes attached to the base of the overriding plate landward of the trench. Long-lasting and ongoing subsidence of the Lombok Basin is documented by distinct seismic sequences. In the Lombok Basin we image mud diapirs, fed from deeply buried sediments which may have been mobilized by rising fluids. We propose a wrench fault system in the eastern Lombok forearc basin that decouples the subduction regime of the Sunda Arc from the continent–island arc collision regime of the western Banda Arc. The observed tectonic activity of the entire forearc system reflects a high earthquake and tsunami hazard, similar to the western part of the Sunda Arc. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Background: This study evaluated tumor response to olaratumab (an anti-PDGFRa monoclonal antibody) in previously treated patients with metastatic gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) with or without PDGFRa mutations (cohorts 1 and 2, respectively). Patients and methods: Patients received olaratumab 20 mg/kg intravenously every 14 days until disease progression, death, or intolerable toxicity occurred. Outcome measures were 12-week tumor response, progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and safety. Results: Of 30 patients enrolled, 21 patients received≤1 dose of olaratumab. In the evaluable population (cohort 1, n=6; cohort 2, n=14), no complete response (CR) or partial response (PR) was observed. Stable disease (SD) was observed in 3 patients (50.0%) in cohort 1 and 2 patients (14.3%) in cohort 2. Progressive disease (PD) was observed in 3 patients (50.0%) in cohort 1 and 12 patients (85.7%) in cohort 2. The 12-week clinical benefit rate (CR+PR+SD) (90% CI) was 50.0% (15.3-84.7%) in cohort 1 and 14.3% (2.6-38.5%) in cohort 2. SD lasted beyond 12 weeks in 5 patients (cohort 1, n=3; cohort 2, n=2). Median PFS (90% CI) was 32.1 (5.0-35.9) weeks in cohort 1 and 6.1 (5.7-6.3) weeks in cohort 2. Median OS was not reached in cohort 1 and was 24.9 (14.4-49.1) weeks in cohort 2. All patients in cohort 1 and 9 (64.3%) in cohort 2 experienced an olaratumab-related adverse event (AE), most commonly fatigue (38.1%), nausea (19.0%), and peripheral edema (14.3%). Two grade≤3 olaratumab-related events were reported (cohort 1, syncope; cohort 2, hypertension). Conclusions: Olaratumab had an acceptable AE profile in patients with GIST. While there was no apparent effect on PFS in patients without PDGFRa mutations, patients with PDGFRα-mutant GIST (all with D842V mutations) treated with olaratumab had longer disease control compared with historical data for this genotype. 15 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables, supplementary material https://doi.org/10.1016/j.margeo.2022.106749.-- Data availability: The data (3D complex mesh of the ARFS and rake values, and the resulting grid files of the tsunami simulations containing the maximum wave amplitude) are archived at PANGAEA repository (https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.941092).-- The EMODnet bathymetry is available at https://www.emodnet-bathymetry.eu/. The stochastic slip distributions have been produced by the code ANTI-FASc (https://github.com/antonioscalaunina/ANTI-FASc) a platform partially based on the code k223d (Herrero and Murphy, 2018 available at https://github.com/s-murfy/k223d), in turn based on the slipk2 (available at https://github.com/andherit/slipk2) and the trilateration codes (available at https://github.com/andherit/trilateration), The westernmost Mediterranean hosts part of the plate boundary between the European and African tectonic plates. Based on the scattered instrumental seismicity, this boundary has been traditionally interpreted as a wide zone of diffuse deformation. However, recent seismic images and seafloor mapping studies support that most of the plate convergence may be accommodated in a few tectonic structures, rather than in a broad region. Historical earthquakes with magnitudes Mw > 6 and historical tsunamis support that the low-to-moderate instrumental seismicity might also have led to underestimation of the seismogenic and tsunamigenic potential of the area. We evaluate the largest active faults of the westernmost Mediterranean: the reverse Alboran Ridge, and the strike-slip Carboneras, Yusuf and Al-Idrissi fault systems. For the first time, we use a dense grid of modern seismic data to characterize the entire dimensions of the main fault systems, accurately describe the geometry of these structures and estimate their seismic source parameters. Tsunami scenarios have been tested based on 3D-surfaces and seismic source parameters, using both uniform and heterogeneous slip distributions. The comparison of our results with previous studies, based on limited information on the fault geometry and kinematics, indicates that accurate fault geometries and heterogeneous slip distributions are needed to properly assess the seismic and tsunamigenic potential in this area. Based on fault scaling relations, the four fault systems have a large seismogenic potential, being able to generate earthquakes with Mw > 7. The reverse Alboran Ridge Fault System has the largest tsunamigenic potential, being able to generate a tsunami wave amplitude greater than 3 m in front of the coasts of Southern Spain and Northern Africa, This work is supported by the Cluster of Excellence “The Future Ocean”, within the framework of the Excellence Initiative by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) on behalf of the German federal and state governments. TSUNAMIS , *GRAVITY , *SEDIMENT transport , *SEDIMENTATION & deposition , *TURBIDITY currents , *FLOW velocity , *SUBMARINE fans , *TSUNAMI hazard zones - Abstract
Earthquakes, tsunamis and gravity flows are common processes offshore Eastern Sicily and pose a significant hazard to coastal communities and infrastructure. The 1908 Messina earthquake and tsunami resulted in >60,000 casualties. It caused a large turbidity current, which broke the Malta-Zante telegraph cable. Yet, this gravity flow remains poorly characterised in terms of its route and flow behaviour. A comprehensive analysis of multibeam echosounder data, sub-bottom profiles, and sediment cores has been carried out to improve our understanding about gravity flow activity within conduit systems of the western Ionian Basin to reconstruct the characteristics of the 1908 sediment flow (e.g., erosion, velocity, source region). Three main canyon-channel systems can be distinguished within the study area. The easternmost system (C3) appears to be the most active in terms of sediment transport. There are numerous erosional and depositional bedforms, including large-scale scours (>100 m-long), turbidite sediment waves and channel wall collapses that are not overprinted by younger events. The other two canyon-channel systems (C1, C2) do not show many bedforms indicative of repeated and recent gravity flow activity. Indeed, the transport of the majority of sediment discharged into the western system (C1) is limited to <25 km downslope from the continental slope, while the central system (C2) facilitates sediment deposition from gravity flows. C3 is, thus, suggested to have been the main passageway of the 1908 sediment flow. It also leads directly to two of three cable break locations. The most likely source areas for the gravity flow are north-eastern Sicily and southern Calabria. Bedforms indicate a flow thickness of >170 m along the upper channel portion of C3 and > 140 m along its lower portion close to the cable breaks. An average flow velocity of 5.6 to 6.3 ms−1 is reconstructed, given the timing of the breaks and length of the canyon-channel system. The flow may have locally decelerated and accelerated while bypassing morphologic highs and knickpoints. These new findings significantly improve our understanding of the 1908 gravity flow (e.g., passageways, depositional/erosional behaviour, thickness, velocity) and provide important insights into gravity flow events in general, especially those with a large run-out. This knowledge is needed to assess potential hazards associated with these events. • the western Ionian Basin shows three distinct canyon-channel systems. • >140 m-thick gravity flow along main passageway in the east; velocity 5–6 m s−2. • numerous erosional and depositional bedforms (e.g., scours, sediment waves). • north-eastern Sicily and southern Calabria are potential source areas. • main failure likely offshore between San Leo and Bocale (southern Calabria).
