- Abstract
We present photometric redshifts for the COSMOS survey derived from a new code, optimized to yield accurate and reliable redshifts and spectral types of galaxies down to faint magnitudes and redshifts out to z similar to 1.2. The technique uses chi (2) template fitting, combined with luminosity function priors and with the option to estimate the internal extinction [ or E( B-V)]. The median most probable redshift, best-fit spectral type and reddening, absolute magnitude, and stellarmass are derived in addition to the full redshift probability distributions. Using simulations with sampling and noise similar to those in COSMOS, the accuracy and reliability is estimated for the photometric redshifts as a function of the magnitude limits of the sample, S/N ratios, and the number of bands used. We find from the simulations that the ratio of derived 95% confidence interval in the chi (2) probability distribution to the estimated photometric redshift (D-95) can be used to identify and exclude the catastrophic failures in the photometric redshift estimates. To evaluate the reliability of the photometric redshifts, we compare the derived redshifts with high-reliability spectroscopic redshifts for a sample of 868 normal galaxies with z < 1: 2 from zCOSMOS. Considering different scenarios, depending on using prior, no prior, and/or extinction, we compare the photometric and spectroscopic redshifts for this sample. The rms scatter between the estimated photometric redshifts and known spectroscopic redshifts is sigma(Delta( z))= 0. 031, where Delta(z) ( z(phot) - z(spec))/( 1+ z(spec)) with a small fraction of outliers (< 2.5%) [ outliers are defined as objects with Delta( z) > 3 sigma(Delta( z)), where sigma(Delta(z)) is the rms scatter in Delta( z)]. We also find good agreement [sigma(Delta(z))= 0.10] between photometric and spectroscopic redshifts for type II AGNs. - Abstract
Historically, variable and transient sources have both surprised astronomers and provided new views of the heavens. Here we report the discovery of an optical transient in the outskirts of the lenticular galaxy Messier 85 in the Virgo Cluster. With a peak absolute R magnitude of -12 this event is distinctly brighter than novae, but fainter than type Ia supernovae (expected from a population of old stars in lenticular galaxies). Archival images of the field do not show a luminous star at that position with an upper limit of ~-4.1, so it is unlikely to be a giant eruption from a luminous blue variable star. Over a two month period the transient emitted radiation energy of almost 10E47 erg and subsequently faded in the opical sky. It is similar to, but more luminous at peak by a factor of 6 than, an enigmatic transient in the galaxy M31. A possible origin of M85 OT2006-1 is a stellar merger. If so, searches for similar events in nearby galaxies will not only allow to study the physics of hyper-Eddington sources, but also probe an important phase in the evolution of stellar binary systems., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. - Abstract
We measure the fraction of luminous galaxies in pairs at projected separations of 5-20 kpc out to z=1.2 in the COSMOS field using ACS images and photometric redshifts derived from an extensive multiwavelength dataset. Analysis of a complete sample of 106,188 galaxies more luminous than M_V=-19.8 (~ L_V*) in the redshift range 0.1 < z < 1.2 yields 1,749 galaxy pairs. These data are supplemented by a local z=0-0.1 value for the galaxy pair fraction derived from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). After statistically correcting the COSMOS pair sample for chance line-of-sight superpositions, the evolution in the pair fraction is fit by a power law \propto (1+z)^{n=3.1 \pm 0.1}. If this strongly evolving pair fraction continues out to higher redshift, ~ 50% of all luminous galaxies at z ~ 2 are in close pairs. This clearly signifies that galaxy mergers are a very significant and possibly dominant mechanism for galaxy evolution during the epoch of galaxy formation at z=1 to 3., Comment: 22 pages including 4 figures and 2 tables. - Abstract
We present imaging data and photometry for the COSMOS survey in 15 photometric bands between 0.3um and 2.4um. These include data taken on the Subaru 8.3m telescope, the KPNO and CTIO 4m telescopes, and the CFHT 3.6m telescope. Special techniques are used to ensure that the relative photometric calibration is better than 1% across the field of view. The absolute photometric accuracy from standard star measurements is found to be 6%. The absolute calibration is corrected using galaxy spectra, providing colors accurate to 2% or better. Stellar and galaxy colors and counts agree well with the expected values. Finally, as the first step in the scientific analysis of these data we construct panchromatic number counts which confirm that both the geometry of the universe and the galaxy population are evolving., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, 14 tables, Accepted to ApJS for COSMOS speciall issue

- Abstract
The Spitzer-COSMOS survey (S-COSMOS) is a Legacy program (Cycles 2+3) designed to carry out a uniform deep survey of the full 2 sq deg COSMOS field in all seven Spitzer bands (3.6, 4.5, 5.6, 8.0, 24.0, 70.0, 160.0 u). This paper describes the survey parameters, mapping strategy, data reduction procedures, achieved sensitivities to date, and the complete data set for future reference. We show that the observed infrared backgrounds in the S-COSMOS field are within 10% of the predicted background levels. The fluctuations in the background at 24u have been measured and do not show any significant contribution from cirrus, as expected. In addition, we report on the number of asteroid detections in the low galactic latitude COSMOS field. We use the Cycle 2 S-COSMOS data to determine preliminary number counts, and compare our results with those from previous Spitzer Legacy surveys (e.g. SWIRE, GOODS). The results from this "first analysis" confirm that the S-COSMOS survey will have sufficient sensitivity with IRAC to detect ~ L* disks and spheroids out to z ~ 3, and with MIPS to detect ultraluminous starbursts and AGN out to z ~3 at 24u and out to z ~1.5-2 at 70u and 160u., Comment: 21 pages including 4 tables and 9 figures. - Abstract
We present a study of the morphological nature of redshift z~0.7 star-forming galaxies using a combination of HST/ACS, GALEX and ground-based images of the COSMOS field. Our sample consists of 8,146 galaxies, 5,777 of which are detected in the GALEX near-ultraviolet band down to a limiting magnitude of 25.5 (AB). We make use of the UV to estimate star formation rates, correcting for the effect of dust using the UV-slope, and compute, from the ACS F814W images, the C,A,S,G,M20 morphological parameters for all objects in our sample. We observe a morphological bimodality in the galaxy population and show that it has a strong correspondence with the FUV - g color bimodality. We conclude that UV-optical color predominantly evolves concurrently with morphology. We observe many of the most star-forming galaxies to have morphologies approaching that of early-type galaxies, and interpret this as evidence that strong starburst events are linked to bulge growth and constitute a process through which galaxies can be brought from the blue to the red sequence while simultaneously modifying their morphology accordingly. We conclude that the red sequence has continued growing at z~<0.7. We also observe z~0.7 galaxies to have physical properties similar to that of local galaxies, except for higher star formation rates. Whence we infer that the dimming of star-forming galaxies is responsible for most of the evolution in the star formation rate density of the Universe since that redshift, although our data are also consistent with a mild number evolution. We quantify the evolution of the stellar mass functions (SMFs) of star-forming and quiescent galaxies as a function of morphology from z ∼ 3 to the present. Our sample consists of ∼50 000 galaxies in the CANDELS fields (∼880 arcmin
2 ), which we divide into four main morphological types, i.e. pure bulge-dominated systems, pure spiral disc-dominated, intermediate two-component bulge+disc systems and irregular disturbed galaxies. At z ∼ 2, 80 per cent of the stellar mass density of star-forming galaxies is in irregular systems. However, by z ∼ 0.5, irregular objects only dominate at stellar masses below 109 M⊙ . A majority of the star-forming irregulars present at z ∼ 2 undergo a gradual transformation from disturbed to normal spiral disc morphologies by z ∼ 1 without significant interruption to their star formation. Rejuvenation after a quenching event does not seem to be common except perhaps for the most massive objects, because the fraction of bulge-dominated star-forming galaxies with M* /M⊙ >1010.7 reaches 40 per cent at z < 1. Quenching implies the presence of a bulge: the abundance of massive red discs is negligible at all redshifts over 2 dex in stellar mass. However, the dominant quenching mechanism evolves. At z > 2, the SMF of quiescent galaxies above M* is dominated by compact spheroids. Quenching at this early epoch destroys the disc and produces a compact remnant unless the star-forming progenitors at even higher redshifts are significantly more dense. At 1 < z < 2, the majority of newly quenched galaxies are discs with a significant central bulge. This suggests that mass quenchin at this epoch starts from the inner parts and preserves the disc. At z < 1, the high-mass end of the passive SMF is globally in place and the evolution mostly happens at stellar masses below 1010 M⊙ . These low-mass galaxies are compact, bulge-dominated systems, which were environmentally quenched: destruction of the disc through ram-pressure stripping is the likely process.
