The eligibility of two women boxers has sparked controversy at the Paris Olympics and has brought Russia into the Games despite not being invited. Algerian boxer Imane Khelif was disqualified from competition after failing a medical test, which came shortly after defeating a Russian boxer. The International Boxing Association, which has financial ties to Russia, made the decision. The controversy has ignited a global culture war over the definition of womanhood in sports and has drawn attention to Russia's involvement in the Olympic movement, including doping and the invasion of Ukraine. The International Olympic Committee has accused Russia of engineering the controversy to sow discord. The IOC has also criticized the International Boxing Association's gender tests and its close ties to the Russian government.
