The article presents a study which examined antibody responses to survivin in canine cancer cases including their prevalence using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using recombinant canine survivin protein as the antigen. It states that survivin overexpression is an unfavorable prognostic marker confirmed in human cancer patients. The dogs were tested for mast cell tumor, thyroid gland carcinoma, circumanal glands tumor and nasal gland carcinoma to determine the frequency of autoantibodies.

Ten polymorphic microsatellite loci were characterized from two genomic DNA-enriched libraries of the red panda (Ailurus fulgens). The number of observed alleles among 35 samples of red pandas ranged from five to 12. Observed and expected heterozygosities were 0.286-0.971 and 0.443-0.894, and the mean polymorphic information content was 0.712. All loci followed Hardy-Weinberg expectations except Aifu-14 and Aifu-16, which may due to the presence of inbreeding or null alleles. Three pairs of loci exhibited significant linkage disequilibrium after Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons. These microsatellites would be useful to strengthen population management, genetic diversity exploration, and demographic history speculation of this species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have reported on a terbinafine (TERB)-resistant I Microsporum canis i strain (designated 47C) from a cat with dermatophytosis in China that had a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of >32 mg/L.[1] Ravuconazole (RVCZ) is a broadspectrum antifungal azole drug which exhibits excellent activity against dermatophytes.[2] We report herein the I in vitro i susceptibility of clinical isolates of dermatophytes and the TERB-resistant strain of I M. canis i to RVCZ, itraconazole (ITZ) and TERB. The present study describes the isolation of Fusarium sporotrichioides from a canine cutaneous ulceration. A 2-year-old male Beagle dog weighing 8.6 kg, with a history of immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA), had been treated with prednisone for 9 months. Physical examination revealed cutaneous ulceration on the left foreleg. Histopathological examination of skin samples from the ulcerative area revealed many branching hyphae surrounding neutrophils. Since itraconazole (ITZ) is recommended for miscellaneous fungal infections, the dog was treated with ITZ. However, the ulcerative lesions did not improve and after 3 weeks of treatment the dog died due to renal failure. No autopsy was performed. Since the isolate recovered from the biopsy specimen was identified as Fusarium species by morphological characteristics, the animal was diagnosed as having had an infection caused by this mould. The dog's prior prednisone treatment may have played a role in establishing the fungal infection. Comparative sequence analyses of the ITS regions of the clinical isolate with those in GenBank showed that it was 100% identical to F. sporotrichioides and less than 96% similar to ITS of other Fusarium species. Based on these findings, F. sporotrichioides was established as the etiologic agent of the canine infection, a situation that has not been previously reported in dogs, as well as humans. Prototheca zopfii causes bovine mastitis that leads to reduced milk production. Since P. zopfii isolates from mastitis have been assigned P. zopfii genotype 2, it suggests that this genotype is the etiologic agent of the infection. However, isolates of P. zopfii have not been investigated with regard to their in vitro drug susceptibility. In this study, we examine the susceptibility of genotype 2 strains from bovine mastitis and genotype 1 isolates recovered from cow-barn surroundings. The in vitro susceptibility of ten isolates and the type strain (SAG2063T) of P. zopfii genotype 1, and equal number of genotype 2 isolates and the type strain (SAG2021T) were assessed by E-test against amphotericin B (AMB), gentamicin (GM), kanamycin (KM) and itraconazole (ITZ). Results showed that P. zopfii genotype 1 isolates are more susceptible in vitro to AMB, GM and KM than those of genotype 2. Moreover, genotype 2 isolates and seven isolates of genotype 1, including the type strain, are not susceptible to ITZ (>10 μg/ml). A rare anthropophilic dermatophyte, Trichophyton rubrum var. raubitschekii, was isolated for the first time from a case of animal dermatophytosis. We morphologically and physiologically identified the isolate from a case of canine dermatophytosis. Molecular typing of chitin synthase 1 ( CHS1) and ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 sequences suggest that human and canine isolates of T. rubrum and T. rubrum var. raubitschekii are genetically identical. Therefore, T. rubrum, including T. rubrum var. raubitschekii, might be pathogenic to humans and dogs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Protothecosis is a rare infection in humans, dogs, and cats, and its causative agent is Prototheca species, which consists of achlorophyllic algae that are ubiquitous in natural environments and hosts intestinal flora. Ravuconazole (RVZ) is a new available human azole drug in Japan since 2018 and broad-spectrum antifungal agent. In the present study, the in vitro susceptibility of clinical and environmental isolates of P. wickerhamii, P. zopfii, and P. blaschkeae to itraconazole (ITZ) voriconazole (VRZ), posaconazole (PCZ), and RVZ. RVZ was more potent than the other azoles against Protheca species and has considerable potential for use as a therapeutic agent for human and animal protothecosis., (© The Author(s) 2019. Mutations in p53 gene exons 5-9 were studied in 44 non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) consisting of 35 B-NHL and 9 T-NHL. Missense mutations were found in two diffuse large B-cell lymphomas (DLBL) and one peripheral T-cell lymphoma (unspecified). Double transversion missense and nonsense mutations were detected in one DLBL and one adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma. Silent mutations were found in two DLBL. Detailed histomorphological study showed that cases harboring p53 missense mutation with/without nonsense mutation tended to have larger nuclei with much more prominent nucleoli. Cytomorphometric analysis was therefore conducted by measuring the gross area of 100 lymphoma cell nuclei in 44 cases and the results were compared between lymphomas harboring p53 missense mutation with/without nonsense mutation and lymphomas harboring p53 silent mutation or lacking mutation. It was found that the lymphomas harboring p53 missense mutation with/without nonsense mutation had a highly significantly larger nuclear gross area than lymphomas with silent p53 mutation or lacking mutation (two-sample t-test, P < 0.00001; Exact Wilcoxon rank-sum test, P < 0.00001). This result suggests that p53 mutation might induce enlargement of neoplastic cell nuclei by some molecular mechanism.

We have established four monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against the nucleocapsid protein (NP) of canine distemper virus (CDV). A competitive binding assay has revealed that the MAbs are directed against two antigenic domains. An immunofluorescence assay using a series of deletion clones of the NP and an immunoprecipitation assay using the NP have revealed that two of the MAbs recognize the C-terminal region of the NP while the other two recognize the tertiary structure of the N-terminal domain. These MAbs reacted with all eight strains of CDV used in this study, but showed different reactivities against measles virus and rinderpest virus.
