In this review, we introduced our three studies that focused on facial movements. In the first study, we examined the temporal characteristics of neural responses elicited by viewing mouth movements, and assessed differences between the responses to mouth opening and closing movements and an averting eyes condition. Our results showed that the occipitotemporal area, the human MT/V5 homologue, was active in the perception of both mouth and eye motions. Viewing mouth and eye movements did not elicit significantly different activity in the occipitotemporal area, which indicated that perception of the movement of facial parts may be processed in the same manner, and this is different from motion in general. In the second study, we investigated whether early activity in the occipitotemporal region evoked by eye movements was influenced by the facial contour and/or features such as the mouth. Our results revealed specific information processing for eye movements in the occipitotemporal region, and this activity was significantly influenced by whether movements appeared with the facial contour and/or features, in other words, whether the eyes moved, even if the movement itself was the same. In the third study, we examined the effects of inverting the facial contour (hair and chin) and features (eyes, nose, and mouth) on processing for static and dynamic face perception. Our results showed the following: (1) In static face perception, activity in the right fusiform area was affected more by the inversion of features while that in the left fusiform area was affected more by a disruption in the spatial relationship between the contour and features; and (2) In dynamic face perception, activity in the right occipitotemporal area was affected by the inversion of the facial contour.

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in psychiatric studies has widely demonstrated that cerebral hemodynamics differs among psychiatric patients. Recently we found that children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) showed different hemodynamic responses to their own mother's face. Based on this finding, we may be able to classify the hemodynamic data into two those groups and predict to which diagnostic group an unknown participant belongs. In the present study, we proposed a novel statistical method for classifying the hemodynamic data of these two groups. By applying a support vector machine (SVM), we searched the combination of measurement channels at which the hemodynamic response differed between the ADHD and the ASD children. The SVM found the optimal subset of channels in each data set and successfully classified the ADHD data from the ASD data. For the 24-dimensional hemodynamic data, two optimal subsets classified the hemodynamic data with 84% classification accuracy, while the subset contained all 24 channels classified with 62% classification accuracy. These results indicate the potential application of our novel method for classifying the hemodynamic data into two groups and revealing the combinations of channels that efficiently differentiate the two groups.

Motor execution processing has been examined using an index of behavioral performance such as reaction times, kinetics, and kinematics. However, difficulties have been associated with the study of motor inhibitory processing because of the absence of actual behavioral performance. Therefore, non-invasive neurophysiological and neuroimaging methods including electroencephalography, magnetoencephalography, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and functional magnetic resonance imaging have been used to investigate neural processes in the central nervous system. We mainly reviewed research on somato-motor inhibitory processing based on data obtained by using these techniques, which can examine 'when', 'where, and 'how' motor inhibition occurs in the brain. Although to date a number of studies have used these techniques separately, few studies have utilized them in a comprehensive manner. In this review, we provide evidence that combining neurophysiological and neuroimaging methods should contribute to our understanding of how executive and inhibitory functions are implemented.

Grapheme-color synesthesia is a phenomenon in which achromatic letters/digits automatically induce particular colors. When multiple letters are integrated into a word, some synesthetes perceive that all those letters are changed into the same color, reporting lexical color to that word. Previous psychological studies found several "rules" that determine those lexical colors. The colors to most words are determined by the first letters of the words, while some words in ordinal sequences have their specific colors. Recent studies further reported the third case where lexical colors might be influenced by semantic information of words. Although neural mechanisms determining those lexical colors remained unknown, here we identified three separate neural systems in the synesthete's brain underlying three rules for illusory coloring of words. In addition to the occipito-temporal and parietal regions previously found to be associated with the grapheme-color synesthesia, neural systems for lexical coloring extended to linguistic areas in the left inferior frontal and anterior temporal regions that were engaged in semantic analyses of words. Those results indicate an involvement of wider and higher neural networks than previously assumed in a production of synesthetic colors to visual stimuli and further showed a multiplicity of synesthetic mechanisms represented in the single brain., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Inc. Background: Using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), our previous neural adaptation studies found that infants' bilateral temporal regions process facial identity (FiHN 5:153, 2011). In addition, we revealed that size-invariant processing of facial identity develops by 5 months of age (NR 23:984-988, 2012), while view-invariant processing develops around 7 months of age (FiHN 5:153, 2011). The aim in the current study was to examine whether infants' brains process facial identity across the non-rigid transformation of facial features by using the neural adaptation paradigm. We used NIRS to compare hemodynamic changes in the bilateral temporal areas of 5- to 6-month-olds and 7- to 8-month-olds during presentations of an identical face and of different faces., Results: We found that (1) the oxyhemoglobin concentration around the T5 and T6 positions increased significantly during the presentation of different faces only in 7- to 8-month-olds and (2) 7- to 8-month-olds, but not 5- to 6-month-olds, showed attenuation in these channels to the presentation of the same face rather than to the presentation of different faces, regardless of non-rigid changes in facial features., Conclusions: Our results suggest that the processing of facial identity with non-rigid facial transformation develops around 7 months after birth.

Intra-epidermal electric stimulation (IES) is an alternative to laser stimulation for selective activation of cutaneous Aδ-fibers. IES is based on the fact that nociceptive fiber terminals are located in the epidermis, whereas receptors of other fibers end deep in the dermis. IES can selectively stimulate C-fibers if the electrode structure and stimulation parameters are carefully selected. However, stable selective stimulation of C-fibers using IES has proven difficult and cannot currently be used in clinical settings. The purpose of the present study was to determine if IES performed using a modified electrode reliably stimulates C-fibers. Magnetoencephalographic responses to IES to the foot were measured in seven healthy subjects. IES elicited somatosensory evoked fields in all subjects. The mean peak latency was 1,327 ± 116 ms in the opercular region contralateral to the stimulated side, 1,318 ± 90 ms in the opercular region ipsilateral to the stimulated side, and 1350 ± 139 ms in the primary somatosensory cortex. These results indicate that IES performed using the modified electrode can selectively stimulate C-fibers and may be a useful tool for pain research as well as clinical evaluation of peripheral small fiber function., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Individuals can experience embarrassment when exposed to self-feedback images, depending on the extent of the divergence from the internal representation of the standard self. Our previous work implicated the anterior insular cortex (AI) and the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) in the processing of embarrassment; however, their exact functional contributions have remained uncertain. Here, we explored the effects of being observed by others while viewing self-face images on the extent of embarrassment, and the activation and connectivity patterns in the AI and ACC. We conducted functional magnetic resonance imaging hyperscanning in pairs of healthy participants using an interaction system that allowed an individual to be observed by a partner in real time. Being observed increased the extent of embarrassment reported when viewing self-face images; a corresponding increase in self-related activity in the right AI suggested that this region played a direct role in the subjective experience. Being observed also increased the functional connectivity between the caudal ACC and prefrontal regions, which are involved in processing the reflective self. The ACC might therefore serve as a hub, integrating information about the reflective self that is used in evaluating perceptual self-face images.

Unlabelled: Walking combined with blood flow reduction (BFR-walk) elicits muscle hypertrophy. However, the skeletal muscle intracellular signalling behind this response is currently unknown., Aim: To investigate the effects of BFR-walk on mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signalling pathways in young men., Methods: Six young men performed 20 min of treadmill walking at 55% of their predetermined maximum oxygen uptake. A pressure cuff belt was applied to the most proximal thigh of only one leg (BFR-Leg, external compression was 240 mmHg), whereas the other leg (CON-Leg) was without BFR during walking. Muscle biopsies were taken from the vastus lateralis of the CON-Leg before exercise and in both legs 3 h after exercise., Results: Erk1/2 phosphorylation levels were significantly (P < 0.05) increased after exercise in both legs; however, only the BFR-Leg saw an increased phosphorylation of p38. For mTOR signalling, there were no changes in Akt, mTOR or S6K1 phosphorylation levels before or after walking. However, eEF2 phosphorylation level was significantly (P < 0.05) lower for the BFR-Leg 3 h after walking compared with CON-Leg., Conclusion: BFR-walk exercise may activate some intracellular signalling cascades that are associated with muscle hypertrophy in young men., (© 2014 Scandinavian Physiological Society. Purpose: Protein ingestion after resistance exercise increases muscle protein synthesis (MPS) in a dose-dependent manner. However, the molecular mechanism(s) for the dose-dependency of MPS remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the dose response of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling in muscle with ingestion of protein after resistance exercise., Methods: Fifteen male subjects performed four sets of six unilateral isokinetic concentric knee extensions. Immediately after exercise, eight subjects consumed water only. The other seven subjects, in a randomized-order crossover design, took either a 10 [3.6 g essential amino acids (EAA)] or 20 g (7.1 g EAA) solution of whey protein. Muscle biopsies from the vastus lateralis muscle were taken 30 min before and 1 h after resistance exercise. Phosphorylation of Akt (Ser473), mTOR (Ser2448), 4E-BP1 (Thr37/46), and S6K1 (Thr389) was measured by western blotting., Results: Concentric knee extension exercise alone did not increase phosphorylation of Akt and mTOR 1 h after exercise, but ingesting protein after exercise significantly increased the phosphorylation of Akt and mTOR in a dose-dependent manner (P < 0.05). 4E-BP1 phosphorylation significantly decreased after resistance exercise (P < 0.05), but subjects who took 10 or 20 g of protein after exercise showed increased 4E-BP1 from post-exercise dephosphorylation (P < 0.05). S6K1 phosphorylation significantly increased after resistance exercise (P < 0.05), and 20 g of protein further increased S6K1 phosphorylation compared with ingestion of 10 g (P < 0.05)., Conclusions: These findings suggest that whey protein intake after resistance exercise activates mTOR signaling in a dose-dependent manner in untrained men.

The face is one of the most important visual stimuli in human life, and inverted faces are known to elicit different brain responses than upright faces. This study analyzed steady-state visual-evoked magnetic fields (SSVEFs) in eleven healthy participants when they viewed upright and inverted geometrical faces presented at 6Hz. Steady-state visual-evoked responses are useful measurements and have the advantages of robustness and a high signal-to-noise ratio. Spectrum analysis revealed clear responses to both upright and inverted faces at the fundamental stimulation frequency (6 Hz) and harmonics, i.e. SSVEFs. No significant difference was observed in the SSVEF amplitude at 6 Hz between upright and inverted faces, which was different from the transient visual-evoked response, N170. On the other hand, SSVEFs were delayed with the inverted face in the right temporal area, which was similar to N170 and the results of previous steady-state visual-evoked potentials studies. These results suggest that different mechanisms underlie the larger amplitude and delayed latency observed with face inversion, though further studies are needed to fully elucidate these mechanisms. Changes in continuous sounds elicit a preattentive component that peaks at around 100ms (Change-N1m) on electroencephalograms or magnetoencephalograms (MEG). Change-N1m is thought to reflect brain activity relating to the automatic detection of changes, which facilitate processes for the execution of appropriate behavior in response to new environmental events. The aim of the present MEG study was to elucidate whether a component relating to auditory changes existed earlier than N1m. Change-related cortical responses were evoked by abrupt sound movement in a train of clicks at 100Hz. Sound movement was created by inserting an interaural time delay (ITD) of 0.15, 0.25, 0.35, and 0.45ms into the right ear. Ten out of 12 participants exhibited clear change-related cortical responses earlier than Change-N1m at around 60ms (Change-P50m). The results of source analysis showed that Change-P50m originated from the superior temporal gyrus of both hemispheres and that its location did not differ significantly from dipoles for the response to the sound onset. The magnitude of Change-P50m increased and the peak latency shortened with an increase in the ITD, similar to those of Change-N1m. Itch is an unpleasant sensation with the desire to scratch. Although it is well known that scratching itchy skin is pleasurable, the cerebral mechanisms underlying this phenomenon are poorly understood. We hypothesized that the reward system is associated with scratching-induced pleasantness. To investigate this hypothesis, a functional magnetic resonance imaging study was performed in 16 healthy subjects. Pleasantness was evoked by scratching the wrists where itch stimuli were applied, while scratching the dorsal forearms, far from itch stimuli, did not evoke pleasantness. Interestingly, pleasantness evoked by scratching activated not only the reward system (i.e., the striatum and midbrain) but also key regions of perception (i.e., the primary somatosensory cortex) and awareness of subjective feelings (i.e., the insular cortex), indicating that a broad network is involved in scratching-induced pleasantness. Moreover, although itch was suppressed by scratching, motor-related regions such as the supplementary motor area, premotor cortex, and cerebellum showed significant activation when pleasantness was evoked. This activation could explain why scratching-induced pleasantness potentially reinforces scratching behaviors. This study is the first to identify networks activated by scratching-induced pleasantness. The results of the present study provide important information on the cerebral mechanisms underlying why scratching itchy skin evokes pleasurable feelings that reinforce scratching behaviors.

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss is characterized by acute, idiopathic hearing deterioration. We report here the development and evaluation of "constraint-induced sound therapy", which is based on a well-established neuro-rehabilitation approach, and which is characterized by the plugging of the intact ear ("constraint") and the simultaneous, extensive stimulation of the affected ear with music. The sudden sensorineural hearing loss patients who received the constraint-induced sound therapy in addition to the standard corticosteroid therapy showed significantly better recovery of hearing function compared to those who had only received corticosteroid treatments. Additionally, the brain activity obtained in a subgroup of patients suggested that the constraint-induced sound therapy could have prevented maladaptive auditory cortex reorganization. Constraint-induced sound therapy thus appears to be an effective, practical, and safe treatment option for sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

Introduction: Previous studies demonstrated that a decrement in the N1m response, a major deflection in the auditory evoked response, with sound repetition was mainly caused by bottom-up driven neural refractory periods following brain activation due to sound stimulations. However, it currently remains unknown whether this decrement occurs with a repetition of silences, which do not induce refractoriness., Methods: In the present study, we investigated decrements in N1m responses elicited by five repetitive silences in a continuous pure tone and by five repetitive pure tones in silence using magnetoencephalography., Results: Repetitive sound stimulation differentially affected the N1m decrement in a sound type-dependent manner; while the N1m amplitude decreased from the 1st to the 2nd pure tone and remained constant from the 2nd to the 5th pure tone in silence, a gradual decrement was observed in the N1m amplitude from the 1st to the 5th silence embedded in a continuous pure tone., Conclusions: Our results suggest that neural refractoriness may mainly cause decrements in N1m responses elicited by trains of pure tones in silence, while habituation, which is a form of the implicit learning process, may play an important role in the N1m source strength decrements elicited by successive silences in a continuous pure tone.

Recent neuroimaging experiments have revealed that subliminal priming of a target stimulus leads to the reduction of neural activity in specific regions concerned with processing the target. Such findings lead to questions about the degree to which the subliminal priming effect is based only on decreased activity in specific local brain regions, as opposed to the influence of neural mechanisms that regulate communication between brain regions. To address this question, this study recorded EEG during performance of a subliminal semantic priming task. We adopted an information-based approach that used independent component analysis and multivariate autoregressive modeling. Results indicated that subliminal semantic priming caused significant modulation of alpha band activity in the left inferior frontal cortex and modulation of gamma band activity in the left inferior temporal regions. The multivariate autoregressive approach confirmed significant increases in information flow from the inferior frontal cortex to inferior temporal regions in the early time window that was induced by subliminal priming. In the later time window, significant enhancement of bidirectional causal flow between these two regions underlying subliminal priming was observed. Results suggest that unconscious processing of words influences not only local activity of individual brain regions but also the dynamics of neural communication between those regions.

The primate visual system is assumed to comprise two main pathways: a ventral pathway for shape and color perception and a dorsal pathway for spatial processing and visuomotor control. Previous studies consistently reported strong activation in the dorsal pathway(especially in the inferior parietal region) induced by manipulable object images such as tools. However, it is controversial whether the dorsal pathway retains this preferential activity to tool images under unconscious perception. In the present study, we used magnetoencephalography (MEG) and investigated spatio-temporal dynamics of neural responses to visible and invisible tool images. A presentation of visible tool images elicited a strong neural response over the parietal regions in the left hemisphere peaking at 400 msec. This response unique to the processing of tool information in the left parietal regions was still observed when conscious perception of tool images was inhibited by interocular suppression. Furthermore, analyses of neural oscillation signals revealed a suppression of m rhythm (8-13 Hz), a neural index of movement execution or imagery,induced by both visible and invisible tools. Those results indicated that the neural circuit to process the tool information was preserved under unconscious perception, highlighting an implicit aspect of the dorsal pathway.

Background: In daily life, we are continuously exposed to temporally regular and irregular sounds. Previous studies have demonstrated that the temporal regularity of sound sequences influences neural activity. However, it remains unresolved how temporal regularity affects neural activity in noisy environments, when attention of the listener is not focused on the sound input., Methods: In the present study, using magnetoencephalography we investigated the effects of temporal regularity in sound signal sequencing (regular vs. irregular) in silent versus noisy environments during distracted listening., Results: The results demonstrated that temporal regularity differentially affected the auditory-evoked N1m response depending on the background acoustic environment: the N1m amplitudes elicited by the temporally regular sounds were smaller in silence and larger in noise than those elicited by the temporally irregular sounds., Conclusions: Our results indicate that the human auditory system is able to involuntarily utilize temporal regularity in sound signals to modulate the neural activity in the auditory cortex in accordance with the surrounding acoustic environment.

Previous studies have demonstrated task-related changes in brain activation and inter-regional connectivity but the temporal dynamics of functional properties of the brain during task execution is still unclear. In the present study, we investigated task-related changes in functional properties of the human brain network by applying graph-theoretical analysis to magnetoencephalography (MEG). Subjects performed a cue-target attention task in which a visual cue informed them of the direction of focus for incoming auditory or tactile target stimuli, but not the sensory modality. We analyzed the MEG signal in the cue-target interval to examine network properties during attentional control. Cluster-based non-parametric permutation tests with the Monte-Carlo method showed that in the cue-target interval, beta activity was desynchronized in the sensori-motor region including premotor and posterior parietal regions in the hemisphere contralateral to the attended side. Graph-theoretical analysis revealed that, in beta frequency, global hubs were found around the sensori-motor and prefrontal regions, and functional segregation over the entire network was decreased during attentional control compared to the baseline. Thus, network measures revealed task-related temporal changes in functional properties of the human brain network, leading to the understanding of how the brain dynamically responds to task execution as a network.

Background: The exact origin of neuronal responses in the human sensorimotor cortex subserving the generation of voluntary movements remains unclear, despite the presence of characteristic but robust waveforms in the records of electroencephalography or magnetoencephalography (MEG)., Aims: To clarify this fundamental and important problem, we analyzed MEG in more detail using a multidipole model during pulsatile extension of the index finger, and made some important new findings., Results: Movement-related cerebral fields (MRCFs) were confirmed over the sensorimotor region contralateral to the movement, consisting of a temporal succession of the first premovement component termed motor field, followed by two or three postmovement components termed movement evoked fields. A source analysis was applied to separately model each of these field components. Equivalent current diploes of all components of MRCFs were estimated to be located in the same precentral motor region, and did not differ with respect to their locations and orientations. The somatosensory evoked fields following median nerve stimulation were used to validate these findings through comparisons of the location and orientation of composite sources with those specified in MRCFs. The sources for the earliest components were evoked in Brodmann's area 3b located lateral to the sources of MRCFs, and those for subsequent components in area 5 and the secondary somatosensory area were located posterior to and inferior to the sources of MRCFs, respectively. Another component peaking at a comparable latency with the area 3b source was identified in the precentral motor region where all sources of MRCFs were located., Conclusion: These results suggest that the MRCF waveform reflects a series of responses originating in the precentral motor area.

Both prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the startle response and P50 sensory gating are important tools to investigate the inhibitory mechanisms of sensory processing. However, previous studies found no or a weak association between these two measures, which may have been due to the different indexes used. We examined the relationship between P50 sensory gating and P50 PPI. P50m sensory gating and PPI of Change-related P50m were assessed in 14 subjects using magnetoencephalography. Concerning P50m sensory gating, the amplitudes of the response to the second click relative to that to the first one were reduced by 43 and 47% for the left and right hemisphere, respectively. Change-related P50m was evoked by an abrupt sound pressure increase by 10 dB in a continuous click train of 70 dB. When this test stimulus was preceded by a click (prepulse) with a weaker sound pressure increase (5 dB) at a prepulse-test interval of 30, 60, or 90 ms, Change-P50m was suppressed by 33 ~ 65% while the prepulse itself elicited no or very weak P50m responses. Although the amplitude of the P50m response to the first click and the amplitude of the Change-P50m test alone response were positively correlated (r = 0.6), the degree of the inhibition of the two measures was not (r = -0.06 ~ 0.14). The neural origin was estimated to be located in the supratemporal plane around the superior temporal gyrus or Heschl's gyrus and did not differ between P50m and Change-P50m. The present results suggest that P50m and Change-P50m are generated by a similar group of neurons in the auditory cortex, while the mechanisms of P50m sensory gating and Change-P50m PPI are different.

Prepulse inhibition (PPI) of startle is a measure of inhibitory function in which a weak leading stimulus suppresses the startle response to an intense stimulus. Usually, startle blink reflexes to an intense sound are used for measuring PPI. A recent magnetoencephalographic study showed that a similar phenomenon is observed for auditory change-related cortical response (Change-N1m) to an abrupt change in sound features. It has been well established that nicotine enhances PPI of startle. Therefore, in the present magnetoencephalographic study, the effects of acute nicotine on PPI of the Change-N1m were studied in 12 healthy subjects (two females and 10 males) under a repeated measures and placebo-controlled design. Nicotine (4 mg) was given as nicotine gum. The test Change-N1m response was elicited with an abrupt increase in sound pressure by 6 dB in a continuous background sound of 65 dB. PPI was produced by an insertion of a prepulse with a 3-dB-louder or 6-dB-weaker sound pressure than the background 75 ms before the test stimulus. Results show that nicotine tended to enhance the test Change-N1m response and significantly enhanced PPI for both prepulses. Therefore, nicotine's enhancing effect on PPI of the Change-N1m was similar to that on PPI of the startle. Human can easily detect other's eyes and gaze from early in life. Such sensitivity is supported by the contrast polarity of human eyes, which have a white sclera contrasting with the darker colored iris (Kobayashi & Kohshima, (1997). Nature, 387, 767-768; Kobayashi & Kohshima, (2001). Journal of Human Evolution, 40, 419-435). Recent studies suggest that the contrast polarity around the eyes plays an important role in infants' face processing. Newborns preferred upright face images to inverted ones in contrast-preserved faces, but not in contrast-reversed faces (Farroni et al., (2005). Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 102, p. 17245-17250). Seven- to 8-month-old infants failed to discriminate between faces when the contrast polarity of eyes was reversed (Otsuka et al., (2013). Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 115, 598-606). Neuroimaging study with adults revealed that full-negative faces induced less activation in the right fusiform gyrus than either full-positive faces or negative faces with contrast-preserved eyes (Gilad et al., (2009). Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 106, p. 5353-5358). In the present study, we investigated whether contrast-reversed eyes diminish infants' brain activity related to face processing. We measured hemodynamic responses in the bilateral temporal area of 5- to 6-month-old infants. Their hemodynamic responses to faces with positive eyes and those with negative eyes were compared against the baseline activation during the presentation of object images. We found that the presentation of faces with positive eyes increased the concentration of oxy-Hb in the right temporal area and those of total-Hb in the bilateral temporal areas. No such change occurred for faces with negative eyes. The imagery of itch and pain evokes emotional responses and covert motor responses (scratching to itch and withdrawal to pain). This suggests some similarity in cerebral mechanisms. However, itch is more socially contagious than pain, as evidenced by the fact that scratching behaviors can be easily initiated by watching itch-inducing situations, whereas withdrawal is less easily initiated by watching painful situations. Thus, we assumed that the cerebral mechanisms of itch imagery partly differ from those of pain imagery in particular with respect to motor regions. We addressed this issue in 18 healthy subjects using functional magnetic resonance imaging. The subjects were instructed to imagine itch and pain sensations in their own bodies while viewing pictures depicting stimuli associated with these sensations. Itch and pain imagery activated the anterior insular cortex (aIC) and motor-related regions such as supplementary motor area, basal ganglia, thalamus, and cerebellum. Activity in these regions was not significantly different between itch and pain imagery. However, functional connectivity between motor-related regions and the aIC showed marked differences between itch and pain imagery. Connectivity with the aIC was stronger in the primary motor and premotor cortices during pain imagery and stronger in the globus pallidus during itch imagery. These findings indicate that brain regions associated with imagery of itch are the same as those involved in imagery of pain, but their functional networks differ. Objective: In contrast to tactile inputs, the organization and processing of nociceptive inputs in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) remain largely unexplored. Few studies have examined the arrangement of nociceptive inputs in S1. The aim of this study was to investigate the representation of nociceptive inputs in the human cortex, including the somatosensory and posterior parietal cortices, from widely separated cutaneous sites., Methods: We examined the somatotopic organization of the nociceptive system in S1, opercular and posterior parietal cortices by measuring the magnetoencephalographic responses (somatosensory-evoked magnetic fields) of four healthy controls in response to intraepidermal electrical stimulation applied to the face, neck, back, elbow, wrist, hand, finger, knee, and foot, which selectively activated the Aδ fibers., Results: Magnetoencephalography demonstrated clear somatotopy in the S1 responses to noxious stimuli, with the foot representation in the extreme posteromedial position of S1 and the facial area in the extreme anterolateral position. There was little evidence of any clear somatotopic organization in the secondary somatosensory and posterior parietal cortices., Conclusion: These findings suggest that the nociceptive system uses the large body surface map in S1., Significance: This is the first MEG study to demonstrate the cortical representation of nociceptive inputs in the human S1. Event-related potentials were measured in twenty-four children aged 6-15 years, at one-year intervals for two years, to investigate developmental changes in each subject's neural response to a point-light walker (PLW) and a scrambled PLW (sPLW) stimulus. One positive peak (P1) and two negative peaks (N1 and N2) were observed in both occipitotemporal regions at approximately 130, 200, and 300-400ms. The amplitude and latency of the P1 component measured by the occipital electrode decreased during development over the first one-year period. Negative amplitudes of both N1 and N2, induced by the PLW stimulus, were significantly larger than those induced by the sPLW stimulus. Moreover, for the P1-N1 amplitude, the values for the eight-year-old children were significantly larger than those for the twelve-year-old children. N1 and N2 latency at certain electrodes decreased with age, but no consistent changes were observed. These results suggest that enhanced electrophysiological responses to PLW can be observed in all age groups, and that the early components were changed even over the course of a single year at the age of twelve., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Psychophysical and visual evoked potential (VEP) studies have shown that spatial frequency of a visual stimulus affects contrast sensitivity and VEPs in humans. However, it is not clear whether and how the effect of spatial frequency varies among cortical areas. Considering that all visual inputs to the retina could be expressed as a sum of sinusoidal gratings of different spatial frequencies, the effect of spatial frequency must be clarified to separate the brain activity specific to each visual stimulus. In order to examine the effect of spatial frequency on different cortical areas, the present study compared cortical responses to sinusoidal gratings of seven different spatial frequencies using magnetoencephalography (MEG). MEG waveforms of twelve healthy adults in response to sinusoidal gratings of 0.3-18.1 cycles per degree were subjected to a multi-dipole analysis. As a result, the effect of spatial frequency was significant on the first peak latency and amplitude of the source activity around V1 and V2 but not on the source activity around V3 and V6, indicating that the effect of spatial frequency varies across different visual areas in the human brain. Our results also suggest that the responses in V1 and V2 that have a peak around 90 ms and that of V6 peaking around 120 ms should be separated to investigate the stimulus-specific cortical response, particularly when examining effects of spatial frequency on the response latency.

Objective: In order to evaluate whether face perception is intact or not in Williams syndrome (WS), the face inversion effects (FIE) in the event-related potential (ERP) or magnetoencephalography (MEG) were investigated in three teenaged patients with WS., Methods: Responses to the inverted faces and upright faces were compared using MEG for one 13year old girl with WS (subject A) and ERP for boys with WS at 16 and 14years of age (subjects B and C, respectively)., Results: Although age-matched control children showed FIE in both MEG and ERP studies, two subjects (A and B) with WS showed no FIE at all. The neurophysiological data of ERP in subject B was significantly different from those of the age-matched controls. On the other hand, a boy with WS (subject C) showed typical FIE in the same manner as the age-matched controls., Conclusions: The difference between those with or without FIE was not explained merely by the chronological age, a simple delay in mental age or in the ability to discriminate among upright faces. Objective: We investigated the characteristics of cortical rhythmic activity in No-go processing during somatosensory Go/No-go paradigms, by using magnetoencephalography (MEG)., Methods: Twelve normal subjects performed a warning stimulus (S1) - imperative stimulus (S2) task with Go/No-go paradigms. The recordings were conducted in three conditions. In Condition 1, the Go stimulus was delivered to the second digit, and the No-go stimulus to the fifth digit. The participants responded by pushing a button with their right thumb for the Go stimulus. In Condition 2, the Go and No-go stimuli were reversed. Condition 3 was the resting control., Results: A rebound in amplitude was recorded in the No-go trials for theta, alpha, and beta activity, peaking at 600-900 ms. A suppression of amplitude was recorded in Go and No-go trials for alpha activity, peaking at 300-600 ms, and in Go and No-go trials for beta activity, peaking at 200-300 ms., Conclusion: The cortical rhythmic activity clearly has several dissociated components relating to different motor functions, including response inhibition, execution, and decision-making., Significance: The present study revealed the characteristics of cortical rhythmic activity in No-go processing., (Copyright © 2012 International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology. Aim: It is well known that various stimuli, such as mechanical stress and nutrients, induce muscle hypertrophy thorough the Akt/mTOR signalling pathway, which is a key mediator of protein synthesis and hypertrophy in skeletal muscle. It was recently reported that heat stress also induces an increase in muscle weight and muscle protein content. In addition, heat stress enhances Akt/mTOR signalling after one bout of resistance exercise. However, it remains unclear whether increased temperature itself stimulates the Akt/mTOR signalling pathway., Methods: Forty-two male Wistar rats (279.5 ± 1.2 g) were divided into a control group (CON) or one of five thermal stress groups at 37, 38, 39, 40 or 41 °C (n = 7 each group). After overnight fasting, both legs were immersed in different temperatures of hot water for 30 min under sodium pentobarbital anaesthesia. The soleus and plantaris muscles were immediately removed from both legs after the thermal stress., Results: The phosphorylation of mTOR or 4E-BP1 and heat shock protein (HSP) expression levels were similar among groups in both the soleus and plantaris muscles. However, Akt and p70S6K phosphorylation significantly increased at 41 °C in the soleus and plantaris muscles. Moreover, we observed a temperature-dependent increase in Akt and p70S6K phosphorylation in both muscles., Conclusion: Our data indicate that the altered temperature increased phosphorylation in a temperature-dependent manner in rat skeletal muscle and may itself be a key stimulator of Akt/mTOR signalling., (© 2012 The Authors Acta Physiologica © 2012 Scandinavian Physiological Society.)

Nicotine is known to have enhancing effects on some aspects of attention and cognition. As for the pre-attentive processes of detecting sensory changes, nicotine has significant effects on the auditory and visual systems implying that its pre-attentive effect is common among sensory modalities. The purpose of the present study was to elucidate whether acute nicotine administration has enhancing effects in the somatosensory system. Change-related cortical activity in response to an abrupt increase in stimulus intensity was recorded using magnetoencephalography. The test stimulus consisted of standard electrical pulses at 100 Hz for 500 ms applied to the dorsum of the left hand followed by 0.7-mA stronger pulses for 300 ms. Nicotine was administered in a gum (4 mg of nicotine). Eleven healthy nonsmokers were tested with a double-blind and placebo-controlled design. Effects of nicotine on the cortical response in the primary (S1) and secondary (S2) somatosensory cortices were investigated. Results showed that nicotine failed to affect the S1 response while it significantly increased the amplitude of S2 activity in the hemisphere ipsilateral to the stimulation, and shortened the peak latency of S2 activity in both hemispheres. Since cortical responses in the present study represent a pre-attentive automatic process to encode new somatosensory events, the results suggest that nicotine can exert beneficial cognitive effects without a direct impact on attention and that the effect of nicotine on the automatic change-detecting system is common across sensory modalities., (Copyright © 2012 IBRO. Knowledge of the effects of training volume on upper limb muscular strength and hypertrophy is rather limited. In this study, both arms of the same subject were trained in a crossover-like design with different training volumes (1 or 3 sets) to eliminate the effects of genetic variation and other individual differences. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of training volume on muscular strength and hypertrophy in sedentary, untrained young Japanese men. Eight subjects (age, 25.0 ± 2.1 years; body mass, 64.2 ± 7.9 kg; height, 171.7 ± 5.1 cm) were recruited. The subjects trained their elbow flexor muscles twice per week for 12 consecutive weeks using a seated dumbbell preacher curl. The arms were randomly assigned to training with 1 or 3 sets. The training weight was set at 80% of 1 repetition maximum for all sets. The 3-set protocol increased cross-sectional area significantly more than did 1 set (1 set, 8.0 ± 3.7%; 3 sets, 13.3 ± 3.6%, p < 0.05). Furthermore, gains in strength with the 3-set protocol tended to be greater than those with 1 set (1 set, 20.4 ± 21.6%; 3 sets, 31.7 ± 22.0%, p = 0.076). Based on the results, the authors recommend 3 sets for sedentary untrained individuals. However, this population should incorporate light training days of 1 set into their training program to prevent overtraining and ensure adherence. The findings are relevant for the sedentary, untrained young male population and must be interpreted within the context of this study.

We studied whether 5-month-old to 8-month-old infants process faces in a size-invariant manner by applying the fNIRS-adaptation paradigm used in our previous study. We used near-infrared spectroscopy to measure hemodynamic responses in the temporal regions of infants' brains during the repeated presentation of an identical face and different faces while changing the size of the faces. As a result, we found that (a) the hemodynamic responses in the channels around the T5 and T6 positions increased significantly during the presentation of different faces and (b) the hemodynamic responses in these channels showed attenuation to the presentation of the same face compared with the presentation of different faces even when the size of the faces altered. Our findings indicated that infants could show adaptation to the same face despite size alterations and that this processing occurred in the bilateral temporal areas.

Aim: Posterior slow waves of youth have a well-known electroencephalographic pattern that peaks in adolescence and usually disappears in adulthood. In general, posterior slow waves of youth are regarded as normal, but some reports have suggested that their presence is related to immature personalities or inappropriate social behavior. The physiological significance of this electroencephalographic pattern, however, remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the neural origins of posterior slow waves of youth using dipole source modeling., Methods: Electroencephalographic epochs, including clear posterior slow waves of youth, were visually selected from electroencephalograms obtained from six normal adolescents using 25 scalp electrodes. The selected epochs were then averaged by arranging the negative peak of the slow waves at the occipital area of each epoch on the time axis. The averaged waveforms consisting of six right and one left posterior slow waves of youth were used for dipole source analysis. A single equivalent current dipole was estimated for the averaged waveforms., Results: The best equivalent current dipoles were estimated to be located in or around the fusiform and middle occipital gyrus ipsilateral to the posterior slow waves of youth., Conclusions: The location of the estimated dipoles of posterior slow waves of youth was on the so-called ventral visual pathway. Further research is required to clarify the physiological significance of posterior slow waves of youth with respect to their origin., (© 2012 The Authors. This study investigated how infants perceive and interpret human body movement. We recorded the eye movements and pupil sizes of 9- and 12-month-old infants and of adults (N=14 per group) as they observed animation clips of biomechanically possible and impossible arm movements performed by a human and by a humanoid robot. Both 12-month-old infants and adults spent more time looking at the elbows during impossible compared with possible arm movements, irrespective of the appearance of the actor. These results suggest that by 12 months of age, infants recognize biomechanical constraints on how arms move, and they extend this knowledge to humanoid robots. Adults exhibited more pupil dilation in response to the human's impossible arm movements compared with the possible ones, but 9- and 12-month-old infants showed no differential pupil dilation to the same actions. This finding suggests that the processing of human body movements might still be immature in 12-month-olds, as they did not show an emotional response to biomechanically impossible body movements. Rationale and Objective: Nicotine is known to have enhancing effects on some aspects of attention and cognition. The purpose of the present study was to elucidate the effects of nicotine on pre-attentive change-related cortical activity., Methods: Change-related cortical activity in response to an abrupt increase (3 dB) and decrease (6 dB) in sound pressure in a continuous sound was recorded by using magnetoencephalography. Nicotine was administered with a nicotine gum (4 mg of nicotine). Eleven healthy nonsmokers were tested with a double-blind and placebo-controlled design. Effects of nicotine on the main component of the onset response peaking at around 50 ms (P50m) and the main component of the change-related response at around 120 ms (Change-N1m) were investigated., Results: Nicotine failed to affect P50m, while it significantly increased the amplitude of Change-N1m evoked by both auditory changes. The magnitude of the amplitude increase was similar among subjects regardless of the magnitude of the baseline response, which resulted in the percent increase of Change-N1m being greater for subjects with Change-N1m of smaller amplitude., Conclusions: Since Change-N1m represents a pre-attentive automatic process to encode new auditory events, the present results suggest that nicotine can exert beneficial cognitive effects without a direct impact on attention.

From which regions of the brain do conscious representations of visual stimuli emerge? This is an important but controversial issue in neuroscience because some studies have reported a major role of the higher visual regions of the ventral pathway in conscious perception, whereas others have found neural correlates of consciousness as early as in the primary visual areas and in the thalamus. One reason for this controversy has been the difficulty in focusing on neural activity at the moment when conscious percepts are generated in the brain, excluding any bottom-up responses (not directly related to consciousness) that are induced by stimuli. In this study, we address this issue with a new approach that can induce a rapid change in conscious perception with little influence from bottom-up responses. Our results reveal that the first consciousness-related activity emerges from the higher visual region of the ventral pathway. However, this activity is rapidly diffused to the entire brain, including the early visual cortex. These results thus integrate previous "higher" and "lower" views on the emergence of neural correlates of consciousness, providing a new perspective for the temporal dynamics of consciousness.

In three-dimensional face recognition studies, it is well known that viewing rotating faces enhance face recognition. For infants, our previous study indicated that 8-month-old infants showed recognition of three-dimensional rotating faces with a direct gaze, and they did not learn with an averted gaze. This suggests that gaze direction may affect three-dimensional face recognition in infants. In this experiment, we used near-infrared spectroscopy to measure infants' hemodynamic responses to averted gaze and direct gaze. We hypothesized that infants would show different neural activity for averted and direct gazes. The responses were compared with the baseline activation during the presentation of non-face objects. We found that the concentration of oxyhemoglobin increased in the temporal cortex on both sides only during the presentation of averted gaze compared with that of the baseline period. This is the first study to show that infants' brain activity in three-dimensional face processing is different between averted gaze and direct gaze.

In this review article, we summarize our results from magnetoencephalography (MEG) and electroencephalography (EEG) studies on face perception. The primary results were as follows: (1) facial (eye and mouth) movements are processed differently from general motion perception, but eye and mouth movements are likely processed in the same manner. (2) In a study investigating the interaction between auditory and visual stimuli relating to vowel sounds in the auditory cortex, vowel sound perception in the auditory cortex, at least in the primary processing stage, was not affected by simultaneously viewing mouth movements. (3) In a study investigating the effects of face contour and features on early occipitotemporal activity when viewing eye movement, there was evidence of specific information processing for eye movements in the occipitotemporal region, and this activity was significantly influenced by whether the movements appeared with the face contour and/or features. (4) In a study investigating the effects of inverting facial contour (hair and chin) and features (eyes, nose and mouth) on the processing of static and dynamic face perception, activity in the right fusiform area was more affected by the inversion of features, whereas activity in the left fusiform area was more affected by disruption of the spatial relationship between the contour and features in static face perception, and activity in the right occipitotemporal area was most affected by inversion of the facial contour in dynamic face perception. (5) In a study investigating the perception of changes in facial emotion, the areas of the brain involved in perceiving changes in facial emotion were found to have not matured by 14 years of age.

Quickly detecting changes in the surrounding environment is one of the most important functions of sensory processing. Comparison of a new event with preceding sensory conditions is necessary for the change-detection process. A sudden change in a continuous sound elicits auditory evoked potentials that peak approximately 100 ms after the onset of the change (Change-N1). In the present study, we recorded Change-N1 under an oddball paradigm in 19 healthy subjects using an abruptly moving sound (SM-stimulus) as a deviant stimulus and investigated effects of the probability of the SM-stimulus to reveal whether Change-N1 is a memory-based response. We compared the amplitude and latency of Change-N1 elicited by the SM-stimulus among three probability conditions (33, 50 and 100%). As the probability of the SM-stimulus decreased, the amplitude of Change-N1 increased and its latency decreased. This study investigated the modulation of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) during precisely controlled force generation and force relaxation in a visuomotor tracking task. Subjects were instructed to track a target line with a line that represented their own force generated by grip movement with the right hand as accurately as possible during concurrent electrical stimulation. The target force line moved up continuously from 0 to 20 % of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) (the force generation phase: FG phase) and moved down from 20 to 0 % of MVC (the force relaxation phase: FR phase) in 7 s at a constant velocity. We separately obtained SEPs following electrical stimulation of the median nerve at the wrist in each phase. During the visuomotor tracking task, compared with the stationary condition, the N30 at Fz and P27 at C3' showed a significant reduction in amplitude in the FG and FR phases. In addition, the N30 and P27 were significantly smaller in amplitude in the FG than FR phase. Although the average amount of force exertion was the same in the FG and FR phases, the modulation of SEP amplitude was larger in the FG phase. These results indicated that sensorimotor integration in the somatosensory area was dependent on the context of movement exertion.

Natural sounds contain complex spectral components, which are temporally modulated as time-varying signals. Recent studies have suggested that the auditory system encodes spectral and temporal sound information differently. However, it remains unresolved how the human brain processes sounds containing both spectral and temporal changes. In the present study, we investigated human auditory evoked responses elicited by spectral, temporal, and spectral-temporal sound changes by means of magnetoencephalography. The auditory evoked responses elicited by the spectral-temporal change were very similar to those elicited by the spectral change, but those elicited by the temporal change were delayed by 30-50 ms and differed from the others in morphology. The results suggest that human brain responses corresponding to spectral sound changes precede those corresponding to temporal sound changes, even when the spectral and temporal changes occur simultaneously.

The choice of a system specific stimulus is difficult when investigating the human nociceptive system, in contrast with the tactile, auditory and visual systems, because it should be noxious but not actually damage the tissue. The discomfort accompanying system specific stimulation must be kept to a minimum for ethical reasons. In this review, recent progress made in the study of human pain perception using intraepidermal electrical stimulation (IES) is described. Also, whether IES is a viable alternative to laser stimulation is discussed. IES selectively activates Aδ nociceptors, elicits a sharp pricking sensation with minimal discomfort and evokes cortical responses almost identical to those produced by laser stimulation. As IES does not require expensive equipment, and is easy to control, it would seem useful for pain research as well as clinical tests.

α-Actinins are actin-binding proteins, and two isoforms (α-actinin-2 and -3) are major structural components of the sarcomeric Z line in mammalian skeletal muscle. Based on human and knockout mice studies, α-actinin-3 is thought to be associated with muscle force output and high contraction velocities. However, fiber-type specific expression of α-actinin isoforms is not well understood and may vary among species. In this study, we investigated the expression of α-actinin isoforms and the difference between fiber types in rat skeletal muscle and compared it with those of humans and mice from previous reports. Soleus and plantaris muscles were analyzed immunohistochemically to identify muscle fiber types and α-actinin protein expression. α-Actinin-2 was stained in all muscle fibers in both the soleus and plantaris muscles; i.e., all α-actinin-3 co-expressed with α-actinin-2 in rat skeletal muscles. The proportions of α-actinin-3 expression, regardless of fiber type, were significantly higher in the plantaris (75.8 ± 0.6%) than the soleus (8.0 ± 1.7%). No α-actinin-3 expression was observed in type I fibers, whereas all type IIx+b fibers expressed α-actinin-3. α-Actinin-3 was also expressed in type IIa fibers; however, approximately 75% of type IIa fibers were not stained by α-actinin-3, and the proportion varied between muscles. The proportion of α-actinin-3 expression in type IIa fibers was significantly higher in the soleus muscle than the plantaris muscle. Our results showed that fiber-type specific expression of α-actinin isoforms in rats is more similar to that in humans compared to that of the mouse, whereas the proportion of α-actinin-3 protein varied between muscles., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Inc. The role of sensory information in motor control has been studied, but the cortical processing underlying cross-modal relationship between visual and somatosensory information for movement execution remains a matter of debate. Visual estimates of limb positions are congruent with proprioceptive estimates under normal visual conditions, but a mismatch between the watched and felt movement of the hand disrupts motor execution. We investigated whether activation in somatosensory areas was affected by the discordance between the intended and an executed action. Subjects performed self-paced thumb movement of the left hand under normal visual and mirror conditions. The Mirror condition provided a non-veridical and unexpected visual feedback. The results showed activity in the primary somatosensory area to be inhibited and activity in the secondary somatosensory area (SII) to be enhanced with voluntary movement, and neural responses in the SII and parietal cortex were strongly affected by the unexpected visual feedback. These results provide evidence that the visual information plays a crucial role in activation in somatosensory areas during motor execution. Background: Frontal intermittent rhythmic delta activity (FIRDA) on electroencephalography (EEG) consists of a run of rhythmic delta waves with frontal predominance. Although FIRDA is a relatively common abnormal EEG finding, the underlying mechanisms that produce FIRDA remain unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the cortical source of FIRDA using dipole source modeling., Methods: We selected EEG epochs, including typical FIRDAs, from EEG recordings obtained using 25 scalp electrodes on 5 subjects. We averaged these epochs by arranging the negative peaks of the delta waves at the Fp electrodes and estimated dipoles for nine averaged waveforms., Results: Averaged waveforms were explained by a single-dipole model in seven FIRDAs and by a two-dipole model in the remaining two FIRDAs with high reliability. Estimated dipoles had a radial orientation with respect to the frontal pole and were located in the medial frontal region. The anterior cingulate cortex was the most common dipole location., Conclusions: This is the first study to approach the fundamental FIRDA mechanism by dipole source modeling and to clarify that FIRDA may be generated from the medial frontal region, particularly from the anterior cingulate cortex., (Copyright © 2012 S. We investigated the relationship between reaction time (RT) and response variability and somatosensory Go/No-go potentials. Event-related potentials following electrical stimulation of the second (Go stimulus) or fifth (No-go stimulus) digit of the left hand were recorded from 16 subjects, and Go and No-go stimuli were presented at an even probability. The subjects were instructed to respond to the Go stimuli by pushing a button with their right thumb. We analyzed the correlation between RT and the N140 and P300 components, and between the standard deviation (SD) of RT and the N140 and P300. Neither the amplitude nor latency of the No-go-N140 (N140 evoked by No-go stimuli) or the Go-N140 (N140 evoked by Go stimuli) related significantly with RT and the SD of RT. There was a significant negative correlation between RT and the amplitude of the No-go-P300 (P300 evoked by No-go stimuli) at Fz and C3, indicating that subjects with a shorter RT had a No-go-P300 of larger amplitude. The latency of the Go-P300 (P300 evoked by Go stimuli) at Pz and C3 showed a significant correlation with RT. The SD of RT was significantly correlated with the amplitudes of the No-go-P300 at C3 and Go-P300 at Pz and C4, and the latency of the No-go-P300 at Cz and Go-P300 at Fz, Cz, Pz, C3, and C4. Our results suggest that response speed and variability for the Go stimulus in Go/No-go paradigms affect No-go-related neural activity for the No-go stimulus.

Arcimboldo images induce the perception of faces when shown upright despite the fact that only nonfacial objects such as vegetables and fruits are painted. In the current study, we examined whether infants recognize a face in the Arcimboldo images by using the preferential looking technique and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). In the first experiment, we measured looking preference between upright and inverted Arcimboldo images among 5- and 6-month-olds and 7- and 8-month-olds. We hypothesized that if infants perceive the Arcimboldo images as faces, they would prefer the upright images to the inverted ones. We found that only 7- and 8-month-olds significantly preferred upright images, suggesting that they could perceive the Arcimboldo images as faces. In the second experiment, we measured hemodynamic responses using NIRS. Based on the behavioral data, we hypothesized that 7- and 8-month-olds would show different neural activity for upright and inverted Arcimboldo images, as do adults. Therefore, we measured hemodynamic responses in 7- and 8-month-olds while they were looking at upright and inverted Arcimboldo images. Their responses were then compared with the baseline activation during the presentation of individual vegetables. We found that the concentration of oxyhemoglobin increased in the left temporal area during the presentation of the upright images compared with the baseline during the presentation of vegetables. The results of the two experiments suggest that (a) the ability to recognize the upright Arcimboldo images as faces develops at around 7 or 8 months of age and (b) processing of the upright Arcimboldo images is related to the left temporal area of the brain., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Inc. Visual working memory (VWM) is known as a highly capacity-limited cognitive system that can hold 3-4 items. Recent studies have demonstrated that activity in the intraparietal sulcus (IPS) and occipital cortices correlates with the number of representations held in VWM. However, differences among those regions are poorly understood, particularly when task-irrelevant items are to be ignored. The present fMRI-based study investigated whether memory load-sensitive regions such as the IPS and occipital cortices respond differently to task-relevant information. Using a change detection task in which participants are required to remember pre-specified targets, here we show that while the IPS exhibited comparable responses to both targets and distractors, the dorsal occipital cortex manifested significantly weaker responses to an array containing distractors than to an array containing only targets, despite that the number of objects presented was the same for the two arrays. These results suggest that parietal and occipital cortices engage differently in distractor processing and that the dorsal occipital, rather than parietal, activity appears to reflect output of stimulus filtering and selection based on behavioral relevance.

We investigated the relationship between short-latency and long-latency somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEPs) relating to voluntary movement. In general, the amplitudes of short-latency components in SEPs are attenuated during movement, whereas those of long-latency are enhanced, and this phenomenon is termed 'gating effects'. This study aimed to examine the relationship of changes in amplitude between short-latency and long-latency SEPs. SEPs were recorded from 11 participants at Fz, Cz, Pz, and C4' by stimulating the left median nerve. Two tasks were conducted; Control and Movement. In Control, the participant was asked to relax with no specific task. In Movement, the participant was encouraged to continue a rapid drumming motion of all fingers of the left hand at a self-paced rate. The amplitudes of short-latency SEPs, the P25 at C4' and N30 at Fz, were significantly smaller in the Movement than Control condition. By contrast, the amplitudes of long-latency SEPs, the N140 at Fz, Cz, and Pz were significantly larger in Movement than Control condition. Moreover, a significant positive correlation was observed in the rate of amplitude change between the frontal N30 and vertex N140, indicating that for the participants with a frontal N30 of smaller amplitude during Movement, the amplitude of the vertex N140 was smaller. We inferred that the neural activities in movement-related cortices affected the sources for the frontal N30 and vertex N140 in the same neuronal network simultaneously.
