The article presents the narrative of the author revealing what it was like to be a child during World War II and its aftermath, from bombardments, freezing cold, and searching for food, to playing in the ruins and being sung back to life. The author reveals that when she was four years old, her mother left her in a room full of screaming children. All of them were waiting to be chosen by foster parents. The children were evacuees, most of them from London, England, joining the 800,000 children already relocated, her big sister among them. Her little brother would be next, two years from now, when he was four and old enough. Evacuation was supposed to spare the children from the war.

Phospholipids and sterols are known to have multiple functions in reproductive tissue of mammals. High concentrations of the cholesterol precursor desmosterol have been described in testis, epididymis, and spermatozoa of various species. These findings and the recent discovery of some cholesterol precursors as meiosis-activating sterols suggest important functions of cholesterol precursors in fertility. Many sterol intermediates appear from the 19-step conversion of lanosterol, the first sterol synthesized in the cascade of cholesterol synthesis, to cholesterol. The biochemical basis of the genetically inherited Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome has been described as a defective conversion of 7-dehydrocholesterol to cholesterol. Since this discovery, interest has focused on this special cholesterol precursor. Here, we report high concentrations of 7- and 8-dehydrocholesterol in caput epididymidis and spermatozoa derived from caput epididymidis of Sprague-Dawley and Wistar rats, which comprised up to 30% of total sterols. In contrast to caput epididymidis, 7- and 8-dehydrocholesterol were barely detected in cauda epididymidis or testis. Desmosterol increased several times from caput to cauda epididymidis.This is the first report of the natural appearance of high concentrations of dehydrocholesterols in mammalian tissue, and it underlines the putative importance of cholesterol precursors in reproductive tissue.

An indirect fluorescence antibody (IFA) procedure was used for the rapid detection of respiratory viruses in direct clinical specimens and for determining the epidemiology of viruses in a community hospital setting. Viral respiratory diseases were monitored for 10 consecutive respiratory seasons. The Bartels Viral Respiratory Screening and Identification Kit is an IFA method that contains pooled and individual monoclonal antibodies for seven common respiratory viruses. Compared with 8,670 conventional tube cell cultures, IFA staining of direct patient specimens had an overall sensitivity of 84.2% and a specificity of 87.7%. Yearly epidemics of respiratory syncytial virus were seen with alternating short and long intervals between successive periods when virus was isolated. Epidemics following short intervals were more severe. Influenza A virus epidemics occurred yearly, and influenza B virus activity was seen generally every other year. When influenza A and influenza B viruses were cocirculating in a given season, the months of peak activity of one virus were always within 1 month of the peak activity of the other virus. Parainfluenza virus type 1 was detected in the autumn of odd-numbered years, and parainfluenza type 2 virus was seen usually in the autumn of even-numbered years. Parainfluenza type 3 virus and adenovirus were the most ubiquitous agents, with peak incidence occurring in the late winter to spring.

The effect of Na+ on 14CO2 production from [14C]succinate was studied in isolated rat enterocytes, and Na+-dependent succinate transport was characterized in pig intestinal brush-border membrane vesicles. The production of 14CO2 from [14C]succinate by enterocytes was decreased 12-fold when Na+ was replaced by N-methyl-D-glucamine in the absence of glutamine and 20-fold in the presence of 0.2 or 0.5 mM glutamine. The ratio of 14CO2 produced from [1,4-14C]succinate to that produced by [2,3-14C]succinate was not affected by Na+ replacement, indicating that the pattern of tricarboxylic acid cycle metabolism was not altered. The uptake of [14C]succinate by brush-border membrane vesicles was stimulated 10-fold in the presence of 100 mM NaCl compared with 100 mM KCl. When succinate uptake was corrected to transport into an osmotically sensitive space, the magnitude of the Na+ stimulation was 20-fold. Succinate transport into brush-border membrane vesicles was Na+ dependent, electroneutral, nonconcentrative, with an apparent Na+-succinate coupling ratio of 2:1. Results of this study indicate that Na+-stimulated CO2 production by enterocytes can be explained by the effect of Na+ on succinate transport across the brush-border membrane.
