Abstract: An equation is derived that describes the linear response of an underdense inhomogeneous plasma [ω0≫ωp(r), where ω0 and ωp(r) are the laser-carrier and plasma frequencies, respectively] during the propagation of a laser pulse along the axis of a plasma channel with a characteristic width Rch. For a wide channel, i.e., when Rch/λp0>1 (where λp0=2πc/ωp0 is the wavelength of the excited plasma wave and ωp0 is the plasma frequency at the channel axis), the structure of the wake field is studied analytically. It is shown that this structure changes with the distance from the trailing edge of the pulse. As a result, at a certain distance behind the pulse, the fraction of the plasma wave period in which the simultaneous focusing and acceleration of electrons are possible increases by a factor of 2. Abstract: The electroreduction of polyacrylamide derivatives in DMF using tetraalkylammonium salts (R 4 NX) as supporting electrolytes has been found to yield the corresponding anionic species possessing interesting reactivities as electrogenerated bases (EGBs). The homopolymer of n -methylacrylamide (MAAm) and its copolymers with N , N -dimethylacrylamide (DMAAm) and styrene (St) were used as polymeric probases and the reactivity of the resulting polymer EGBs was investigated. The polymer EGB prepared from the copolymer of MAAm with DMAAm [copoly(MAAm-DMAAm)] containing 65% of MAAm unit gave the best result in the trichloromethylation of α, β-unsaturated esters (89%). It was also found that polymeric probases were easily recovered by reprecipitation and they were repeatedly useable as probases.

Abstract: Pseudomorphic In0.04Ga0.96As/Al0.3Ga0.7As quantum wells (QWs) with well widths of 1.2, 2.4, 3.6, 4.8, 7.2 and 12 nm have been grown on (411)A In0.04Ga0.96As ternary substrates by MBE at growth temperature of Ts= 520°C. The interface flatness of the QWs was characterized by photoluminescence at 4.2 K. Extremely flat interfaces have been realized in the QWs on the (411)A InGaAs substrates, which is better or sometimes much better than In0.04Ga0.96As/Al0.3Ga0.7As QWs grown on (100) In0.04Ga0.96As alloy substrates, (411)A and (100) GaAs substrates, indicating high application potential of (411)A InGaAs alloy substrates.

Abstract: The multiple quasiparticle tunnelling branches with large hysteresis were measured on the mesas of Si + implanted Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+x single crystals. For given Si + dosage the tunnelling critical current I c, decreased for junctions located closer to the mesa surface; meanwhile the voltage interval between the neighboring quasiparticle branches decreased with increasing the Si + dosage.

Abstract: Recently, computer vision technology has been widely adopted for the safety technology of automobiles. In conventional methods, research on the recognition of obstacles of similar height has advanced, such as the recognition of pedestrians or nearby vehicles. However, we must also help drivers recognize the height of obstacles that the vehicles cannot drive over, such as parking lot sprags and curbstones. We propose a 3D reconstruction method of small obstacles in this paper. Due to the cost and the problem of camera calibration, we use an in-vehicle monocular camera. Generally, a camera-view image is used for 3D reconstruction. For the camera-view image, objects far from the camera are reflected as small and their reconstructed 3D information has less accuracy due to the mismatch that occurs in the template matching process. Therefore, we propose a correct matching method using the shape of the tops of the same object because it does not change the sequential top-view images. Using our proposed method, more correct 3D information can be acquired than with camera-view image.

Abstract: An apparatus for simultaneously monitoring heart and respiratory rates was developed using photoplethysmography (PPG) and digital filters, and compared with conventional methods. The PPG signal, which includes both heart and respiratory components, was measured at the earlobe with an original transmission mode photoplethysmographic device. A digital filtering technique was used to distinguish heart and respiratory signals from the PPG signal. The cut-off frequency of the respiratory signal filter was selected automatically depending on the heart rate. Using digital filtering techniques, heart and respiratory signals were separated at rest and during exercise. The digital signal processor was employed to realize an adaptive and real-time filtering. The heart rate was calculated by the zero-crossing method and the respiratory rate from the peak interval of the filtered signal. To evaluate the newly developed monitor, an ECG for heart rate and a transthoracic impedance plethysmogram for respiratory rate were monitored simultaneously. To obtain higher heart and respiratory rates, exercise was performed on an electrical bicycle ergometer. Heart and respiratory rates calculated by the new method compare to those obtained from ECG and the transthoracic impedance plethysmogram. The maximum error of heart and respiratory rates was 10 beats/min and 7 breaths/min, respectively.

The reaction responsible for the dihydroxylation of the phthalate-benzene ring was concluded to be catalysed by membrane-associated phthalate 3,4-dioxygenase (PO). Of the other enzymes involved, 3,4-dihydro-3,4-dihydroxyphthalate 3,4-dehydrogenase (PH) and 3,4-dihydroxyphthalate 2-decarboxylase (PC) appeared likely to be membrane-bound, while protocatechuate 3,4-dioxygenase appeared to be present in the cytoplasm. Based on the data, the membrane-bound PO and PH apparently form an enzyme complex, which is associated with the NADH-regenerating system.

315. Transcriptional regulation of the junB promoter in mature B lymphocytes. Activation through a cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate-like binding site

Abstract: The experiments presented herein were designed to understand the molecular mechanism(s) by which membrane Ig (mIg)-dependent signals are integrated at the level of the junB promoter to induce gene transcription. Functional studies using chloramphenicol acetyltransferase reporter gene constructs that contained deleted 5' flanking region junB sequences identified a region located between -194 and -87 that contains an Ets binding site and a putative cAMP response element binding site (CRE-like). Point mutagenesis of the CRE-like site blocked junB promoter activation in response to mIg cross-linking in mature Bal17 B cells. Nuclear extract binding activity to a synthetic oligonucleotide containing the junB CRE-like site was detected in unstimulated B cells and was increased in response to mIg cross-linking. Binding activity was competed with unlabeled oligonucleotides that contained the junB CRE-like site or the somatostatin CRE consensus motif, the latter observation suggests that members of the activating transcription factor/CRE binding protein (CREB) family may mediate mIg-dependent junB transcription. Consistent with this interpretation, recombinant CREB and activating transcription factor proteins bound the junB CRE-like site, but did not interact with a mutant CRE-like site. Expression of a dominant negative CREB protein blocked mIg-mediated transcription from a junB CRE-like site-chloramphenicol acetyltransferase reporter gene. CRE-like nucleoprotein complexes from Bal17 B cells contained constitutively bound CREB-1, which was phosphorylated on serine 133 in response to mIg cross-linking. Activating transcription factor-1 protein was also constitutively expressed in CRE-like nucleoprotein complexes. Collectively, these results suggest that components of the protein kinase A signaling pathway are recruited by mIg to induce junB transcription.

316. Acceleration of influenza virus clearance by Th1 cells in the nasal site of mice immunized intranasally with adjuvant-combined recombinant nucleoprotein

Abstract: The protective roles of influenza viral nucleoprotein (NP), together with the cellular mechanism of the protection in the nasal site, were examined in BALB/c mice immunized intranasally with an adjuvant (cholera toxin B subunit containing 0.2% of the whole toxin)-combined A or B virus recombinant NP. The NP-immune mice, when challenged intranasally with a sublethal dose of the virus 3 wk after immunization, had accelerated virus clearance from the nasal site in both an influenza type-specific and a nonspecific manner, as shown by the protection from high morbidity from the second day after challenge. Both type-specific and nonspecific acceleration of recovery was confirmed by the increased survival rate after challenge with a lethal dose of virus in mice immunized and boosted with adjuvant-combined NP. The acceleration of nasal virus clearance was accompanied with acceleration of type-specific systemic delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) and with IFN-gamma production by nasal lymphocytes. The nasal lymphocytes from the immunized and challenged mice generated a significantly high level of DTH when transferred locally, but no class I MHC-restricted CTL response. Moreover, nasal CD4+ T cells, induced by NP immunization and increased in number by the subsequent challenge, were involved in the accelerated IFN-gamma production. These results suggest that nasal Th1 cells, capable of producing IFN-gamma and mediating DTH, are involved in the type-specific acceleration of recovery from influenza after challenge in mice immunized intranasally with adjuvant-combined NP, although the nonspecific mechanism of accelerated recovery remains to be solved.

Abstract: A total of 31 antibody-secreting hybridoma cells against the yellowtail ascites virus (YAV) were established. These monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) reacted with the cytoplasm of YAV-infected CHSE-214 cells, but not with uninfected CHSE-214 cells in an immunofluorescence test. Using these MAbs, two classes of polypeptides (VP2 and VP3) were characterized by immunoprecipitation followed by SDS-PAGE, although one MAb did not react with either polypeptide. Fifteen out of the 17 MAbs that were reactive with VP2 polypeptides neutralized virus infectivity, but all 13 MAbs that were reactive with VP3 did not neutralize infectivity. In the immunofluorescence test, 29 out of the 31 MAbs obtained showed the same reaction pattern to 12 YAV isolates from yellowtail, Seriola quinqueradiata, goldstriped amberjack, Seriola aureovittata, and threeline grunt, Parapristipoma trilineatum, from different geographical regions. The remaining two MAbs showed slightly different reaction patterns to the YAV isolates. The reaction patterns of the MAbs to the VR-299, Sp and Ab strains of IPNV were also investigated. Fourteen MAbs reacted to all three IPNV strains. The other 17 MAbs showed a negative reaction with at least one strain.

Abstract: This paper reports the first CMOS implementation of an 8:1 byte-interleaved multiplexer (byte-MUX) operating in the Gb/s region, together with an 8:1 bit-interleaved multiplexer (bit-MUX). A future generation 0.15-/spl mu/m CMOS technology has been applied. Both chips use identical bit-MUX cores with a static shift-register architecture, and have ECL interfaces with a single supply of -2 V. The byte-MUX demonstrates 43-mW/GHz dependence on clock frequency and operates up to 2.8 Gb/s with a power dissipation of 176 mW. The bit-MUX showed 20-mW/GHz dependence on clock frequency and operated up to 3.0 Gb/s with a power dissipation of 118 mW. This revel of performance has been achieved by a novel row-column exchanger configuration, critical path reduction and precise clocking techniques utilized in the bit-MUX core, and the development of high-speed I/O buffers.

Abstract: We attempted to establish an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) system by preparation of recombinant murine MIP-2 and its rabbit antibodies. A fusion construct of MIP-2 to protein A was used to enable easy purification as well as the generation of a sufficiently large antibody response. The specificity of antibody was confirmed by Western blotting analysis of 20-h conditioned medium from lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 cells, a murine macrophage cell line; antibody gave a single band with a molecular weight of approximately 6000, which is identical to that of murine MIP-2 reported previously. Biotin–streptavidin sandwich ELISA could detect quantitatively MIP-2 at concentration range of 20 to 1000 pg/ml. In some applications of this ELISA system, time-related production of MIP-2 and inhibitory effect of dexamethasone on its production have been demonstrated in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. Thus, ELISA system established in this study is considered to be a useful tool to study MIP-2 response in various inflammation models in mice.

320. Transport characteristics of magnetite thin films grown onto GaAs substrates

Abstract: Magnetite thin films with a preferred (111) orientation have been deposited by reactive dc magnetron sputtering from a pure Fe target onto (100) GaAs substrates at 400 °C. The films show a clear Verwey transition in both the magnetization and sheet resistance as functions of temperature. For films deposited onto semiconducting n-type GaAs substrates, we have obtained asymmetric current–voltage (I–V) characteristics with a Schottky diodelike behavior in forward bias. Activation energy plots of the I–V data as a function of temperature indicate a barrier height of 0.3–0.4 eV. This does not take into account the contribution from tunneling across the narrow depletion layer in these junctions, so should be considered a lower bound to the actual Schottky barrier height. Our work points to the potential integration of half-metallic magnetite with GaAs-based heterostructures for spin-electronic devices.

Abstract: We present a search for Lorentz violation with 8249 candidate electron antineutrino events taken by the Double Chooz experiment in 227.9 live days of running. This analysis, featuring a search for a sidereal time dependence of the events, is the first test of Lorentz invariance using a reactor-based antineutrino source. No sidereal variation is present in the data and the disappearance results are consistent with sidereal time independent oscillations. Abstract: To evaluate the contribution of hepatic veins to the dual blood supply in the liver under temporary hepatic venous occlusion.Selected hepatic veins in 23 patients with liver tumors were temporarily occluded with a balloon catheter. Computed tomography (CT) arteriography, CT during arterial portography (CTAP), or both were performed with a spiral technique with and without temporary occlusion of a hepatic vein.After hepatic vein occlusion, a well-demarcated, wedge-shaped area of hypoattenuation was seen at CTAP and/or hyperattenuation was seen at CT arteriography in the following regions: left lobe (left hepatic vein), ventral part of the anterior segment and the medial segment except for the ventromedial part (middle hepatic vein), dorsal part of the anterior segment and the ventral part of the posterior segment (right hepatic vein), and dorsocaudal part of the right lobe (inferior right hepatic veins).After hepatic venous occlusion, the portal veins become draining veins and the occluded area is supplied with arterial blood alone.

Abstract: A Gram-positive Rhodococcus erythropolis strain S1 was shown to assimilate aromatic amino acids such as L-phenylalanine, L-tyrosine, L-tryptophan, D-phenylalanine, D-tyrosine and D-tryptophan, which were utilized not only as the sole carbon source but also as a suitable nitrogen source. The highest growth on these aromatic amino acids occurred at a temperature of 30°C. L-Phenylalanine, L-tyrosine and L-tryptophan degradative pathways would appear to be independent, and to be induced alternatively. The strain S1 also showed the ability to assimilate peptides which consisted of only L-phenylalanine and L-tyrosine.

Abstract: For the first time, a DBR laser with an electrooptical Bragg section is reported for fast wavelength tuning operation. This structure is based on the photonic integration of a Fabry-Perot buried ridge stripe laser with a ridge waveguide modulator in which the grating is etched. By proper structure design and adjustment of the Franz-Keldysh quaternary gap used in the Bragg section, a 2.5-nm tuning range with six distinct modes is obtained for a -4 V voltage applied to the Bragg section. Under this tuning, the optical-output power variation is limited to 2.5 dB for a 370-/spl mu/m DBR length. Using this concept, we measured the best switching time between different wavelength channels ever reported on DBR lasers, on this device: 500 ps independently of the wavelength shift. >

Abstract: Clinical and immunohistochemical studies were done for 3-39 d on mice after intracerebral inoculation with the neurovirulent A/WSN/33 (H1N1; WSN) strain of influenza A virus, the nonneurovirulent A/Aichi/2/68 (H3N2; Aichi) strain, and two reassortant viruses between them. The virus strains with the WSN gene segment coding for neuraminidase induced meningoencephalitis in mice. The mice inoculated with the R96 strain, which has only the neuraminidase gene from the WSN strain, had mild symptoms and weak positive immunostaining to the anti-WSN antibody in meningeal regions. Both the WSN and R404BP strains, which contain the WSN gene segments coding for neuraminidase and matrix protein, were clearly neurovirulent both clinically and pathologically. On day 3 after inoculation with either of these two strains, WSN antigen was detected in meningeal and ependymal areas, neurons of circumventricular regions, the cerebral and cerebellar cortices, the substantia nigra zona compacta, and the ventral tegmental area. On day 7, meningeal reactions and neuronal staining were still seen, and advanced accumulation of the viral antigen was evident in the substantia nigra zona compacta and hippocampus. Double immunostaining demonstrated that the WSN antigen was only seen in neurons and not in microglia or reactive astrocytes. Immunostaining for the lectin maackia amurensis agglutinin, which recognizes the Neu5Ac alpha 2,3 Gal sequence, which serves as a binding site for influenza A virus on target cell membranes, showed that positive staining was localized in the ventral substantia nigra and hippocampus. These results suggest that neurovirulent influenza A viruses could be one of the causative agents for postencephalitic parkinsonism.

Abstract: Summary Accumulating evidence indicates that varicocele repair improves sperm quality. However, longitudinal changes in sperm parameters and predictors of improved semen characteristics after surgery have not been fully investigated. We retrospectively reviewed data from 100 men who underwent microsurgical subinguinal varicocele repair at a single centre. Follow-up semen examinations were carried out at 3, 6 and 12 months post-operatively. Logistic regression was used to identify predictors of early (3 months) and late (≥6 months) improvement in semen parameters after varicocele repair. Abstract: We present a new min-cut based placement algorithm for large scale sea-of-gates arrays. In the past all such algorithms were developed based on a single local optimization function, called the sequential cut line objective function. Our algorithm incorporates global objective functions into this traditional framework of min-cut placement. In particular, we introduce a new global objective function based on the congestions for cut lines and use it for the selection of their sequence. We also use the total cut value objective function in the determination of the sizes and connectivities of clusters that are to be used in the early stages of min-cut partitioning. The incorporation of such global objective functions yields additional reductions of wire congestions in the entire as well as local chip areas. With the automatic selection and use of such clusters and a cut line sequence, our algorithm can produce, in a short time and at a low cost, final placement results that achieve the 100% completion of wiring on chips of fixed sizes. This has led to its successful production use, having generated more than 400 CMOS sea-of-gates array chips of 1.5 K to 150 K raw gates. >

Abstract: The observation of neutrino-less double beta decay (0νββ) would be the most practical way to prove the Majorana nature of the neutrino and lepton number violation. CANDLES studies 48Ca double beta decay using CaF2 scintillator. The main advantage of 48Ca is that it has the highest Q-value (4.27 MeV) among all the isotope candidates for 0νββ. The CANDLES III detector is currently operating with 300kg CaF2 crystals in the Kamioka underground observatory, Japan. In 2014, a detector cooling system and a magnetic cancellation coil was installed with the aim to increase light emission of CaF2 scintillator and photo-electron collection efficiency of the photo-multipliers. After this upgrade, light yield was increased to 1000 p.e./MeV which is 1.6 times larger than before. According to data analysis and simulation, main background source in CANDLES is turned out to be high energy external gamma-ray originating neutron capture on the surrounding materials, so called (n,γ). Upgrading the detector by installing neutron and gamma-ray shield can reduce the remaining main backgrounds by two order magnitude. In this report, we discuss the detail of (n,γ) and background reduction by additional shielding.

Abstract: We report a factor VII (FVII) variant, FVIIShinjo, characterized by normal FVII antigen levels and variable procoagulant activity using tissue thromboplastin from different sources. Normal FVII activity is obtained using human placenta thromboplastin but low activity using rabbit or bovine brain thromboplastin. Exons 2-8 and the intron-exon junctions of the FVII genes of the propositus were amplified by PCR from DNA extracted from peripheral white blood cells, and screened by single-strand conformational polymorphism (SSCP) analysis. DNA fragments showing aberrant mobility were cloned and sequenced. We detected a single-point mutation, a homozygous G to A transition at nucleotide position 6,055 in exon 4, which results in the substitution of Arg 79 by Gln in the first EGF-like domain. This mutation results in a loss of a site for the restriction endonuclease Msp I. The Msp I digestion pattern of the PCR-amplified exon 3+4 fragments from each member of the family was determined. The Msp I haplotypes were consistent with this G to A transition being associated with reduced FVII activity as detected using thromboplastins from various species. We conclude that the Arg 79 to Gln substitution in the first EGF-like domain of FVII identified in the propositus is responsible for the inherited FVII abnormality in this Japanese family. We postulate that one of the sites of interaction between FVII and tissue thromboplastin includes Arg 79 in the first EGF-like domain of factor VII.

A graph G=(V, E) is called a rectangle intersection (respectively, overlap) graph for R if there is a one-to-one correspondence between V and R such that two vertices in V are adjacent to each other if and only if the corresponding rectangles in R intersect (respectively, overlap) each other. We first prove that the maximum independent set problem is NP-hard even for both cubic planar rectangle intersection and cubic planar rectangle overlap graphs. We then show the NP-completeness of the vertex coloring problem with three colors for both planar rectangle intersection and planar rectangle overlap graphs even when the degree of every vertex is limited to four. These NP-hardness results are obtained for the tightest degree constraint cases. >

Abstract: 便失禁を伴う直腸膣壁弛緩症と直腸脱に対して,これまで本邦での報告のない骨盤底修復術を付加した手術を施行した.直腸膣壁弛緩症に対しては,経膣的に余剰膣壁の切除,縫合閉鎖とともに,骨盤底修復術として恥骨直腸筋および肛門挙筋の縫縮を行うanterior levatorplastyと外肛門括約筋縫縮術を施行した.直腸脱と直腸膣中隔の菲薄化を認めた症例には,経会陰的にGant-三輪法と,骨盤底修復術としてanterior levatorplastyと外肛門括約筋縫縮術,postanal repairを行うtotal pelvic floor repairを施行した.肛門括約筋欠損を伴う直腸脱には,腹式直腸後方固定術とS状結腸人工肛門造設術後,経会陰的に括約筋修復術とともに,total pelvic floor repairを施行した.術後,肛門括約筋がほぼ欠損した症例では,便失禁の改善はなかったが,他の2例は改善し,改善した症例では,直腸肛門内圧検査で肛門静止圧の上昇と肛門管長の延長がみられた.

Abstract: A 47-year-old woman developed left hemiparesis primarily affecting the lower limbs during the course of severe generalised tetanus. MRI on the 82nd hospital day revealed cortical and subcortical lesions predominantly in the right frontal and parietal lobes in addition to marked brain atrophy. Three months later, the enhancing lesions were still present on follow up MRI. We postulate that structures above brainstem may be involved in severe generalised tetanus.

Abstract: Psoriasis represents one of the T-helper (Th)17-mediated autoimmune diseases, and has been shown to be associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS). It has been reported that some adipokines and Th17-related cytokines are altered in patients with psoriasis.To examine the relationship between levels of adipokines and Th17-related cytokines in the serum of patients with psoriasis compared with healthy controls.We enrolled 30 patients with psoriasis and 30 normal controls in the study, and used ELISA to measure serum adipokines and Th17-related cytokines. The association between each adipokine and each cytokine was determined using Pearson correlation analysis. Multiple regression analysis using all adipokines and Th17-related cytokines as covariates was also performed.Pearson correlation analysis showed a strong positive association between chemerin and resistin levels and between adiponectin and high molecular weight adiponectin in normal controls. By contrast, in patients with psoriasis, resistin levels were significantly positively associated with tumour necrosis factor-α, while there was a strong negative association between retinol binding protein-4 and interleukin (IL)-6 levels. Interestingly, a marked positive correlation between IL-22 and adiponectin was also found in patients with psoriasis. Leptin levels correlated positively with IL-6 in patients with psoriasis, but this did not reach significance. The correlations identified by the multiple regression analyses were almost identical to those from the Pearson analyses.These data suggest that distinct interaction between adipokines and Th17 cytokines is involved in the pathogenesis of psoriasis.

Abstract: Double Chooz is unique among modern reactor-based neutrino experiments studying ν¯e disappearance in that data can be collected with all reactors off. In this paper, we present data from 7.53 days of reactor-off running. Applying the same selection criteria as used in the Double Chooz reactor-on oscillation analysis, a measured background rate of 1.0±0.4 events/day is obtained. The background model for accidentals, cosmogenic β-n-emitting isotopes, fast neutrons from cosmic muons, and stopped-μ decays used in the oscillation analysis is demonstrated to be correct within the uncertainties. Kinematic distributions of the events, which are dominantly cosmic-ray-produced correlated-background events, are provided. Abstract: The Double Chooz experiment has observed 8,249 candidate electron antineutrino events in 227.93 live days with 33.71 GW-ton-years (reactor power x detector mass x livetime) exposure using a 10.3 cubic meter fiducial volume detector located at 1050 m from the reactor cores of the Chooz nuclear power plant in France. The expectation in case of theta13 = 0 is 8,937 events. The deficit is interpreted as evidence of electron antineutrino disappearance. From a rate plus spectral shape analysis we find sin^2 2{\theta}13 = 0.109 \pm 0.030(stat) \pm 0.025(syst). The data exclude the no-oscillation hypothesis at 99.9% CL (3.1{\sigma}).

Abstract: Global Investigation of therapeutic DEcisions in hepatocellular carcinoma and Of its treatment with sorafeNib (GIDEON), a global, non-interventional, surveillance study, aims to evaluate the safety of sorafenib in all patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (uHCC) under real-life practice conditions, particularly Child-Pugh B patients, who were not well represented in clinical trials.Treatment decisions are determined by each physician according to local prescribing guidelines and clinical practice. Patients with uHCC who are candidates for systemic therapy, and for whom a decision has been made to treat with sorafenib, are eligible for inclusion. Demographic data and medical and disease history are recorded at entry. Sorafenib dosing and adverse events (AEs) are collected throughout the study.From January 2009 to April 2011,3000 patients from 39 countries were enrolled. The prespecified first interim analysis was conducted when the initial approximately 500 treated patients had been followed up for ≥4 months; 479 were valid for safety evaluation. Preplanned subgroup analyses indicate differences in patient characteristics, disease aetiology and previous treatments by region. Variation in sorafenib dosing by specialty are also observed; Child-Pugh status did not appear to influence the starting dose of sorafenib. The type and incidence of AEs was consistent with findings from previous clinical studies. AE profiles were comparable between Child-Pugh subgroups.The GIDEON study is generating a large, robust database from a broad population of patients with uHCC. First interim analyses have shown global and regional differences in patient characteristics, disease aetiology and practice patterns. Subsequent planned analyses will allow further evaluation of early trends.

The reactor antineutrino flux prediction used the Bugey4 flux measurement after correction for differences in core composition. The deficit can be interpreted as an indication of a nonzero value of the still unmeasured neutrino mixing parameter sin⁡22θ13. Analyzing both the rate of the prompt positrons and their energy spectrum, we find sin⁡22θ13=0.086±0.041(stat)±0.030(syst), or, at 90% C.L., 0.017

Abstract: Castrate resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) is a disease that is resistant to both hormone therapy and chemotherapy. At present, no curative therapy for CRPC has been established. Therefore, it is necessary to determine a novel molecular target for the development of therapeutic agents. We previously reported that AlkB homolog 3 (ALKBH3) is highly expressed in prostate cancer but not in benign prostatic hyperplasia or in normal prostate epithelium and that the expression levels of ALKBH3 protein are significantly correlated with the hormone-independent state of prostate cancer. Moreover, ALKBH3 regulates the invasion of prostate cancer cells via the regulation of matrix metalloproteinase 9. Here, we show that ALKBH3 gene silencing markedly induces apoptosis in hormone-independent prostate cancer cell line DU145 but not in the normal prostate epithelial cell line PNT2. Moreover, the in vivo tumorigenicity of DU145 cells was significantly inhibited by the administration of ALKBH3 siRNA. Furthermore, the anchorage-independent growth of DU145 cells was inhibited by ALKBH3 knockdown and promoted by ALKBH3 overexpression, significantly. ALKBH3 shRNA-expressing prostate cancer cells formed significantly smaller tumors than those of control shRNA transfectants in an in vivo xenograft model. These findings suggest that ALKBH3 is a promising target molecule for the development of CRPC therapeutic agents.

Abstract: We present the results of a search for extraterrestrial electron antineutrinos ($\bar{\nu}_{e}$'s) in the energy range $8.3 MeV < E_{\bar{\nu}_{e}} < 31.8 MeV$ using the KamLAND detector. In an exposure of 4.53 kton-year, we identify 25 candidate events. All of the candidate events can be attributed to background, most importantly neutral current atmospheric neutrino interactions, setting an upper limit on the probability of $^{8}$B solar $\nu_{e}$'s converting into $\bar{\nu}_{e}$'s at $5.3 \times 10^{-5}$ (90% C.L.), if we assume an undistorted $\bar{\nu}_{e}$ shape. This limit corresponds to a solar $\bar{\nu}_{e}$ flux of $93 cm^{-2} s^{-1}$ or an event rate of $1.6 events (kton-year)^{-1}$ above the energy threshold $(E_{\bar{\nu}_{e}} > 8.3 MeV)$. The present data also allows us to set more stringent limits on the diffuse supernova neutrino flux and on the annihilation rates for light dark matter particles., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: We report a measurement of muon-neutrino disappearance in the T2K experiment. The 295-km muon-neutrino beam from Tokai to Kamioka is the first implementation of the off-axis technique in a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. With data corresponding to 1.43 × 10(20) protons on target, we observe 31 fully-contained single μ-like ring events in Super-Kamiokande, compared with an expectation of 104 ± 14(syst) events without neutrino oscillations. The best-fit point for two-flavor νμ → ντ oscillations is sin 2(2θ(23)) = 0.98 and |Δm(2)(32)| = 2.65 × 10(−3) eV2. 347. E1A repression of IL-6-induced gene activation by blocking the assembly of IL-6 response element binding complexes

Abstract: Some viral products interfere with host antiviral defense mechanisms. Adenovirus E1A represses IFN signal transduction pathways which induces gene activation and an antiviral state. Both IFN and IL-6 activate Jak/Tyk protein tyrosine kinases and the STAT (signal transducer and activator of transcription) family proteins. We showed that 12S E1A repressed IL-6 signals activating the junB promoter and the two IL-6 response elements (REs), JRE-IL6 and type II IL-6 RE (also called acute phase response element), required for IL-6-induced activation of the junB promoter and the type II acute phase reactant genes, respectively, in hepatocytes. Conserved region 1 of the 12S E1A was responsible for the repression. Target molecules of the repression by E1A appeared to be IL-6-inducible DNA-binding proteins acting on the IL-6 REs. In a rat 3Y1 cell line stably expressing E1A, the levels of IL-6-induced IL-6 RE binding proteins were severely reduced compared with those in a parental 3Y1 cell line. Moreover, we found that the levels of the STAT family proteins including Stat1-alpha (p91), Stat1-beta (p84), Stat2 (p113), and Stat3 were decreased by the stable expression of adenovirus E1A. The E1A-induced reduction in the amount of DNA-binding proteins seemed to be partly responsible for the decreased transcriptional activity of the IL-6 RE-driven gene expression in response to IL-6. This repression mechanism may be applicable to the E1A repression of IFN-gamma-induced gene activation.

348. In-Situ Observations of Magneto-Optical Spectra for Co/Cu (001) Ultrathin Films

Abstract: The magneto-optical properties of ultrathin fcc Co films epitaxially grown on Cu (001) surfaces were investigated. The growth conditions were optimized, and the RHEED patterns of Co ultrathin films revealed streaks reflecting the symmetry of the fcc Cu (001) surface. Longitudinal Kerr hysteresis loops were square for Co coverage thicknesses greater than 6A, and were detected down to 4A. The longitudinal Kerr rotation and ellipticity spectra were measured over the photon energy range from 2.0 to 4.6 eV, after Co coverage deposition of each sample. The off-diagonal elements of the conductivity tensor (?? xy ) were evaluated. When the Co coverage thickness is 50A, the shapes of both the ??' xy and ??" xy spectra showed essentially the same features as those of 1000A thick fcc Co films. When the Co thickness decreased below 50A, ??" xy became smaller in magnitude. The decrease in ??" xy as a fraction of a number of Co/Cu layers is discussed.

Abstract: In order to study whether peripheral action of thyroid hormones is altered in insulin deficiency and to elucidate the biological consequences of alteration of the cytosolic 3,5,3′-tri-iodo-l-thyronine (T3) binding protein (CTBP), we measured malic enzyme, T3-responsive nuclear n protein, CTBP and nuclear thyroid hormone receptor in the liver and kidney of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats that were treated with or without insulin and/or a receptor-saturating dose of T3. The following results were obtained. 1. Induction of malic enzyme by T3 was apparently diminished in diabetic rats. However, supplementary injection of insulin enabled previously given T3 to take effect in diabetic rats. 2. T3-responsiveness of other hepatic proteins (n protein and CTBP) was not altered by insulin in diabetic rats. 3. The level of n protein was increased by insulin in diabetic rats in vivo and in perfused rat liver, indicating that the hepatic n protein is a novel insulin-responsive protein. T3 and insulin increased the level of n protein non-synergistically in diabetic rat liver. 4. Hepatic nuclear receptor levels were not altered in diabetic rats. 5. Hepatic CTBP levels were decreased in diabetic rats. This was not due to the toxic effect of STZ. Low CTBP level was only partially increased by insulin after 30 days of diabetic period. Renal CTBP levels were not altered in diabetic rats with or without insulin treatment. These results indicate that reduction of CTBP did not influence the hepatic response to a receptor-saturating dose of T3, although CTBP may regulate the nuclear T3 transport, and that fundamental action of a receptor-saturating dose of T3 was not attenuated in diabetic rat liver. 350. Development of a residential use, utility interactive PV inverted with high-frequency isolation

Abstract: A 3 kW residential use, utility interactive PV inverter using a high-frequency isolation circuit was developed. To produce a cost effective, compact, and highly efficient PV inverter, first prototype, practical type, and improved type inverters were fabricated and tested. To improve the efficiency, a high-frequency transformer and DC reactor were specially designed and evaluated. A conversion efficiency more than 94% was achieved. The estimated cost of the inverter was ¥ 39/W based on a production of 3,000 units/month.
