This study explored the effectiveness of the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications' diversity standard from 1989 to 2002. Although this standard, known as Standard 12, had the most non-compliances, the findings credit the standard for increasing non-white and female faculty and students in accredited journalism units. The findings also credit the standard for the development of courses that focus on issues pertaining to women and non-whites in journalism. But the study also concluded that stronger enforcement and additional strategies were needed to fully achieve diversity in journalism and mass communication education.

The author analyzes the influences of black women as decisionmakers and creators in entertainment television and focuses on the effects black women have had on the system during the period 1999–2004. She also assesses whether a black presence has made a difference in the process and the products produced for television viewers.

Chapter 1 focuses on representations of African Americans in film, print, and broadcast media. It introduces the concepts of media framing, stereotypes, and hegemony as they relate to race and mass media studies. The chapter also introduces antebellum portrayals of African Americans, which are explored in greater depth in subsequent chapters.

Building on our examination of historical portrayals of African Americans as a whole, Chapter 2 explores stereotypes of African-American males in particular. The chapter’s case study provides an in-depth exploration of mass media portrayals of President Barack Obama throughout his first four years as the first Black president of the United States.

Chapter 4 focuses on images of African Americans in advertising, PR, and social media. Because many of the stereotypes, cultural narratives, and frames that exist today originated in historical advertisements of products and services, we begin with an in-depth analysis of antebellum racial and ethnic advertisements in mass media. Starting with the 1800s, we trace the evolution of longstanding racial stereotypes, which provides context for the subsequent chapters of our text. Topics include how and why African Americans have been depicted as they have in advertisements, PR, and social media. The chapter presents implications for self-presentation in new media platforms. A case study on President Barack Obama’s early social media presence concludes this chapter.

Chapter 6 explores similar concepts introduced in the earlier chapters; however, it applies them to new media formats such as social media, websites, and online videos. In the tradition of McLuhan and Fiore’s the “medium is the message” (1967), communication via social media challenges traditional communication theories. As such, framing and gatekeeper roles of media outlets have changed tremendously. To explore changing audience and gatekeeper dynamics, a case study in this section assesses modern representations in social media through an analysis of Facebook hate pages targeting the Obamas.

Chapter 3 introduces feminist theory and explores traditional media frames and stereotypes of women. After addressing media coverage of women in general, the chapter turns to portrayals of Black women in particular through the lens of Black Feminist theory. Stereotypes of this segment of women offer a rich source of content to analyze. Demonstrating how stereotypes have an impact on media coverage of various issues, many journalists used the angry Black woman archetype in their narratives of Michelle Obama during the 2007–2008 presidential primaries, which is the focus of this chapter’s case study.

Media images and messages about African Americans, Latinos, Asians, and Native Americans (ALANAS) may affect the perceptions and stereotypes of those within and outside of these groups. These messages may also influence identity formation and attitudes of Europeans and non-Europeans about race and ethnicity. Historically, ALANAS have been under represented in television portrayals. African Americans and Latinos are generally shown on television in minor and low status roles. African Americans have reached a proportion on television representative of their actual size in the population but other ethnic groups are under-represented. Nevertheless, these portrayals are not necessarily accurate. More research is needed, however, to assess the role that media portrayal of racial and ethnic groups plays in adolescent health and socialization.

The Baskett Mosse Award for Faculty Development was presented to Sandra Chance of the University of Florida. Several Research Committee Awards were presented next. Linda Steiner of Rutgers University presented the Deutschmann Award for Excellence in Research to Melvin DeFleur of Boston University. Elizabeth Toth of Syracuse University presented the Nafziger-White Dissertation Award to Mark A. Feldstein of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill (now teaching at George Washington), and Michael Real of Ohio University presented the Eleanor Blum Award to James A. Crook of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Erika Engstrom of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas presented the following Commission on the Status of Women Awards: the Mary Ann Yodelis Smith Award for Feminist Research to Susan Henry of Cal State Northridge, the Outstanding Contributions to Journalism Education Award to Hazel Dicken-Garcia of the University of Minnesota, and the Mary Gardner Graduate Research Award to Cory Armstrong of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The Donna Allen Award for Feminist Advocacy went to Ammu Joseph of the Network of Women in Media, based in India, but she could not attend to accept the award. It was accepted on her behalf by Radhika Parameswaran of Indiana University. Marilyn Kern-Foxworth, media consultant, and Shirley Staples Carter of the University of South Carolina presented diplomas to the 2002-2003 fellows of the Journalism and Mass Communication Leadership Institute for Diversity. Kern-Foxworth thanked the Gannett Foundation for its critical funding of the: program. The fellows were Janet Bridges of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Kathleen Enclros of the University of Akron, John Omachonu of William Paterson University, Federico Subervi of The Latinos and Media Project, Birgit Wassmuth of Drake University, Jan Whitt of the University of Colorado Boulder, and Lynn Zoch of the University of South Carolina. Carter announced the 2003-2004 class of JLID fellows. In his President's Report, Classer thanked the Council of Divisions for the substance of the convention this year. He thanked Jennifer McGill and the AEJMC office staff for their work this year. He said that several of the task forces he appointed two years ago will be reporting during the convention. He expressed special thanks to each of the following for their work: Jim Carey, Linda Steiner, Charles Salmon, and John Pauly. Glasser then presented the 2004 Presidential Awards to Cliff Christians of the University of Illinois and Jim Carey of Columbia University. Glasser thanked them for their long-standing and dedicated service to the association, and their outstanding work in the field. President-elect Jannette L. Dates of Howard University said that the association was increasing its level of support for the enrollment and placement studies conducted by Lee Becker of the University of Georgia. Dates said the association was in excellent financial shape as were the AEJMC journals. Lori Bergen of Kansas State University reported that the Professional Freedom & Responsibility Committee worked on the proposed resolutions, and will be working on the plenary for the Toronto convention. Incoming chair of the committee is Beth Barnes of the University of Kentucky, and the incoming vice chair will be Ann Brill of the University of Kansas. The best PF&R report this year was from the Public Relations Division, and an honorable mention went to the Radio-Television Division. …
