Abstract

Polymer addition amplifies the foam flood performance by providing a substantial mobility control during the enhanced oil recovery (EOR). A conventional anionic polymer i.e. hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) is widely used for polymer enhanced foam (PEF) flooding. In this study, the foam stability and viscosity performance of the conventional HPAM polymer were compared with a relatively new associative polymer. An associative polymer (i.e. Superpusher B 192) and the conventional polymer of same molecular weight were considered and the foam generation was performed using a widely used foamer i.e. alpha olefin sulfonate (AOS) and a foam stabilizer (betaine). FoamScan was used to measure the foam stability whereas, for foam viscometric measurements, a high-pressure high-temperature foam rheometer was utilized. An associative polymer showed an interesting combination and both the apparent viscosity and foam stability were found to be significantly high. The conventional polymer failed to provide a high foam strength in rheometric analysis whereas, an associative polymer showed an interesting viscosity profile and a two-fold increase in the foam apparent viscosity was observed. This study shows that the associative Superpusher B192 holds a bright potential in increasing the foam flood performance during EOR.

Abstract

This study has utilized the response surface methodology (RSM) and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) approaches for the modeling of polymer solution viscosity. In the absence of reports in the previous study on applying these two approaches, the main objective of this study has been to compare the performance of these methods toward the viscosity modeling of a polymer solution. By utilizing RSM technique, the effects of three independent parameters including shear rate, polymer concentration, and sodium chloride concentration on viscosity of polymer solution were examined. The RSM results showed that all the parameters were not equally important in the polymer solution viscosity. Moreover, analysis of variance (ANOVA) was also carried out and indicated that there was no evidence of lack of fit in the RSM model. As a second approach for polymer solution viscosity modeling, ANFIS was utilized with two rules constructed based on the first-order Sugeno fuzzy approach and trained by back propagation neural networks algorithm. High coefficient of determination (R 2) values ( >99%) showed that the prediction ability of both the ANFIS and RSM models was good enough for the response when the interpolation ability of the models was considered. In order to evaluate the extrapolation abilities of the two developed models, two data sets lying beyond the originally considered data were also taken into account. The results showed that their extrapolation predictive ability was poor. The reason could simply be the inherent behavior of the polymeric solution, i.e., the correlational structure seen in the sample used in the training step did not continue outside the sample space.

Abstract

Advances in the communication technology of embedded systems have led to the situation where nowadays almost all systems should implement security for data safety. Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) has advantages for use in embedded systems due to its speed and simplicity, however without security mechanisms, it is vulnerable to various attacks. As an example, during upgrading of Wireless Access Points (WAPs), attackers can access the information and modify it, and then install malicious code to interrupt the system. This work proposes security implementation of Diffie Hellman Key Exchange in TFTP by pre-sharing public parameters that enable two parties to achieve same secret key without the risk of Man-In-The-Middle (MITM) attacks. The implementation is integrated with compression and encryption methods to significantly reduce computational requirements in TFTP communication.

Abstract

A four stroke, four cylinder, In-direct injection diesel engine was used to study the effect of emulsified diesel fuel with 5% water by volume on the engine performance and on the main pollutant emissions. The experiments were conducted in the speed range from 1000 to 4500 rpm at full load conditions. It was found that, in general, using emulsified fuel improves the engine performance with slight increase in emissions. While the BSFC has a minimum value for 5% water and at all rpm, the torque, the power and the BMEP are found to have maximum values under these conditions when compared conve ntional disel. CO2 was found to increase with engine speed whereas increase in CO and NOX were minimum. In this work water in diesel emulsion was prepared by a mechanical homogenizer and their physical and chemical properties were examined.

Abstract

Water in diesel emulsion, as an option fuel, has potential to simultaneously reduce the formation of both nitrogen oxides and particulate matters in diesel engine. However, the capability of this fuel strongly dependent on the type of emulsion, stability of the emulsified fuel and the physio-chemical properties. In this study, water in diesel emulsion fuels of 5%, 10%, 20%, water by volume was prepared by a mechanical homogenizer. Physical and chemical properties of the emulsion were examined as these properties could influence the spray characteristics of the emulsions which significantly affect the ignition delay and flame propagation. Density and viscosity was found to be higher for all of the water in diesel emulsion than pure diesel at all measured temperatures whereas the carbon contents for water in diesel emulsion with 10% and 20% water were low. Droplet size of the emulsion was found to be less than 2μm. The actual water content in the emulsified fuel was found to be lesser than the mixed amount.
