In this study, we describe plant communities along the mesotopographic gradient in the low‐elevation subcontinental mountains of NE Finland (Utsjoki region). We sampled vascular plants, bryophytes and lichens along 18 mesotopographic ridge‐snowbed transects comprising a total of 180 plots. We used non‐metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) ordination with envfit to explore the differentiation of plant communities in relation to mesotopography, elevation, rock cover, cover of bare ground, snowbed size and snowmelt time. The classification of communities was performed using DIANA clustering. Plant communities were differentiated along the mesotopographic gradient, snowmelt time, elevation and rock cover. The DIANA analysis distinguished seven clusters corresponding to the following communities: Betula nana–Lichenes heath, Empetrum–Myrtillus–Stereocaulon heath, Empetrum–Pleurozium–Lichenes heath, graminoid‐rich snow‐protected heath, Oreojuncus trifidus–Avenella flexuosa snow‐protected heath, Polytrichastrum sexangulare–liverwort snowbed, and Salix herbacea–Kiaeria starkei snowbed. Because of the strong impact of snowmelt time on plant community structure and distribution of communities, it is likely that climate change‐induced changes in snow conditions are affecting tundra vegetation and especially snowbeds are threatened. Snowbed communities in the Utsjoki region roughly align with previously described vegetation associations of mountain areas in NW Europe. Domestic abuse encompasses a range of damaging behaviors beyond physical violence, including economic and emotional abuse. We analyze the impact of cohabiting with an abusive partner on victims' economic outcomes. In so doing, we highlight the systematic role of economic suppression in such relationships. Using Finnish administrative data and a matched-control event-study design, along with a within-individual comparison of outcomes across relationships, we document three new facts. First, women who begin relationships with (eventually) physically abusive men suffer large and significant earnings and employment falls immediately upon cohabiting with the abusive partner. Second, the decline in economic outcomes is non-monotonic in women's pre-cohabitation outside options. Third, men who are violent against women in any capacity impose economic costs on all their female partners, even those who do not report physical violence. To rationalize these findings, we develop a new dynamic model of abusive relationships where women do not perfectly observe their partner's type, and abusive men have an incentive to use economic suppression to sabotage women's outside options and their ability to later exit the relationship. The recovery rates and assembly processes of stream bryophyte communities after severe disturbances are not well known. Breaking of an ice dam caused an extreme flood that completely removed bryophyte cover along several hundreds of metres of a boreal stream (Stream Uopajanpuro, Koillismaa, NE Finland). We monitored recolonization rates and successional processes of stream bryophytes in the disturbed stream section over 8 years. In the first two summers after the disturbance, the disturbed section remained largely unvegetated. The initial recovery of the bryophyte community resulted mainly from colonization of vegetative moss fragments of the dominant, perennial species present in the undisturbed upstream section, whereas typical early successional colonist species remained scarce. The recovery of total cover, richness and community composition of stream bryophytes took 5–6 years after the disturbance event, even though bryophyte vegetation supplying fragments was located in the immediate vicinity upstream of the disturbance site. Bryophyte species showed differences in the colonization–recovery rates. Mean spatial segregation among species showed no trend during recovery, whereas several species pairs showed both segregation and aggregation trends. Our results indicate that extreme flooding can have devastating effects on bryophyte cover, and the recovery of bryophytes is slow compared to other stream organisms, with full recovery taking up to several years. This recovery time estimate may only apply if there is an immediate upstream source of vegetative propagules from undisturbed populations. Justice in sustainability transitions requires states to design transition policies that 'leave no‐one behind'. Emphasising fairness, however, may entail slowing or scaling down the impetus of sustainability transition. To examine this risk empirically, we analysed how stakeholders frame justice in deliberating policy measures needed to support just transition in agricultural land use and dietary changes, the cornerstones of building healthier and climate friendlier food systems in Finland. The results show that justice frames focus on the potential impacts of transition, largely ignore global scale, and prioritise social justice claims at the cost of environmental ambition. To create just and environmentally effective policies, policymakers need to consider justice at the level of policy‐mixes combining environmental and social policies. Summary: Osteonecrosis (ON) is a common complication of glucocorticoid‐based Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) treatment, but the natural evolution and prognosis of ON lesions remain poorly understood. We describe the radiological evolution of ON lesions identified in a Nordic population‐based cohort of paediatric HL patients. Magnetic resonance images of suspected ON lesions were centrally reviewed to confirm ON diagnosis and grade the ON lesions according to the Niinimäki classification. The study included 202 ON lesions in 46 patients, of which 77 were joint lesions. Follow‐up images were available for 146/202 lesions, with a mean follow‐up time of 28 months. During follow‐up, 71% of the lesions remained stable, 26% improved or resolved, and 3% progressed. A higher ON grade at diagnosis was associated with a lower likelihood of spontaneous resolution. The likelihood for resolution of ON decreased by 50% for each year of added patient age, when adjusted for sex, ON location, and symptoms. Hip ON showed less spontaneous improvement compared with other joints, and the risk for surgery was 13‐fold in hip ON. Grades 3–4 joint ON has the potential to either progress or resolve, warranting follow‐up in patients with severe symptoms. Research on secondary prevention should be directed at grade 3–4 joint ON. Cerebral dopamine neurotrophic factor (CDNF) is an unconventional neurotrophic factor that is a disease-modifying drug candidate for Parkinson’s disease. CDNF has pleiotropic protective effects on stressed cells, but its mechanism of action remains incompletely understood. Here, we use state-of-the-art advanced structural techniques to resolve the structural basis of CDNF interaction with GRP78, the master regulator of the unfolded protein response (UPR) pathway. Subsequent binding studies confirm the obtained structural model of the complex, eventually revealing the interaction site of CDNF and GRP78. Finally, mutating the key residues of CDNF mediating its interaction with GRP78 not only results in impaired binding of CDNF but also abolishes the neuroprotective activity of CDNF-derived peptides in mesencephalic neuron cultures. These results suggest that the molecular interaction with GRP78 mediates the neuroprotective actions of CDNF and provide a structural basis for development of next generation CDNF-based therapeutic compounds against neurodegenerative diseases.CDNF is a clinical trial candidate in Parkinson’s disease but the mechanism of action is not fully understood. Microfluidic flow reactors functionalized with immobilized human liver microsomes (HLM chips) represent a powerful tool for drug discovery and development by enabling mechanism-based enzyme inhibition studies under flow-through conditions. Additionally, HLM chips may be exploited in streamlined production of human drug metabolites for subsequent microfluidic in vitro organ models or as metabolite standards for drug safety assessment. However, the limited shelf life of the biofunctionalized microreactors generally poses a major barrier to their commercial adaptation in terms of both storage and shipping. The shelf life of the HLM chips in the wetted state is ca. 2–3 weeks only and requires cold storage at 4 °C. In this study, we developed a freeze-drying method for lyophilization of HLMs that are readily immobilized inside microfluidic pillar arrays made from off-stoichiometric thiol–ene polymer. The success of lyophilization was evaluated by monitoring the cytochrome P450 and UDP-glucuronosyltransferase enzyme activities of rehydrated HLMs for several months post-freeze-drying. By adapting the freeze-drying protocol, the HLM chips could be stored at room temperature (protected from light and moisture) for at least 9 months (n = 2 independent batches) and up to 16 months at best, with recovered enzyme activities within 60–120% of the non-freeze-dried control chips. This is a major improvement over the cold-storage requirement and the limited shelf life of the non-freeze-dried HLM chips, which can significantly ease the design of experiments, decrease energy consumption during storage, and reduce the shipping costs with a view to commercial adaptation. Effective solutions to biodiversity loss are multidimensional, requiring engagement from diverse stakeholders across various sectors and commitment levels. In this context, voluntary actions from community members emerge as a valuable addition to the large‐scale nature conservation activities conducted by states and municipalities. Such actions complement biodiversity protection measures and legal requirements aimed at companies. This article delves into the rescaling of biodiversity offsetting to the community members level and explores it from the perspective of community members. Through workshops organized in four Finnish municipalities, participants were prompted to reflect on biodiversity offsetting in their daily lives. The results show community members' limited resources to conduct pro‐biodiversity actions and highlight their diverse interpretations of the topic. Beyond direct biodiversity‐enhancing action, like maintaining rural biotopes, eradicating alien species, or protecting forests, workshop participants called for indirect actions. These included education, eco‐taxes, and the development of sharing economies. Thus, rather than solely focusing on biodiversity offsetting or the mitigation hierarchy, these suggestions underscore the need for diverse pro‐biodiversity actions at the community member's level. Furthermore, the results highlight the need for support that enables community members and communities' work for biodiversity. Introducing the concept of nature amends addresses this need, enhancing the mitigation hierarchy's capacity to incorporate community members in nature conservation endeavors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wood is known for its complex hygroscopic properties. Previous studies show that both the temperature-dependency and the hysteresis in sorption should be included in the physical models, if the most accurate results are desired from simulations of building assemblies with wood-based materials. Literature is scarce on the topic, where the significance of these aspects on the reliability of mould-risk assessments is inspected. Exterior walls with glass wool insulation and LDF-sheathing were studied by using two different models with previously measured material data. Over 300 hygrothermal simulations were carried out, where mould-indices were computed on the warm side of the sheathing. According to both conventional and more sophisticated model, the studied walls perform well in cold climate if no driving rain leaks in. Temperature-dependent and hysteretic model yields slightly smaller mould-indices in general, but for certain leaky cases the difference is significant, which indicates the importance of sophisticated sorption-properties in modelling. We conducted a prospective study of 159 cases of Streptococcus dysgalactiae subspecies equisimilis (SDSE) bacteremia in 157 patients at 2 hospitals in Finland during November 2015–November 2019. Cellulitis was associated with nonsevere disease (p = 0.008); necrotizing fasciitis was associated with severe disease (p = 0.004). Fifty percent of patients had >1 clinical characteristic associated with risk for death. The case-fatality rate was 6%, and 7% of patients were treated in an intensive care unit. Blood leukocyte counts on days 2 (p = 0.032) and 3 (p = 0.020) and C-reactive protein levels on days 3 (p = 0.030) and 4 (p = 0.009) after admission were predictors of severe disease. The Pitt bacteremia score was an accurate predictor of death. Using the Pitt bacteremia score, leukocyte counts, and CRP responses during initial treatment can improve treatment strategies and survival for patients with SDSE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and purpose — Fractures of the pelvis and femur are serious and potentially lethal injuries affecting primarily older, but also younger individuals. Long-term trends on incidence rates and mortality might diverge for these fractures, and few studies compare trends within a complete adult population. We investigated and compared incidence and mortality rates of pelvic, hip, femur shaft, and distal femur fractures in the Swedish adult population. Patients and methods — We analyzed data on all adult patients ≥ 18 years in Sweden with a pelvic, hip, femur shaft, or distal femur fracture, through the Swedish National Patient Register. The studied variables were fracture type, age, sex, and 1-year mortality. Results — While incidence rates for hip fracture decreased by 18% (from 280 to 229 per 105 person-years) from 2001 to 2016, incidence rates for pelvic fracture increased by 25% (from 64 to 80 per 105 person-years). Incidence rates for femur shaft and distal femur fracture remained stable at rates of 15 and 13 per 105 person-years respectively. 1-year mortality after hip fracture was 25%, i.e., higher than for pelvic, femur shaft, and distal femur fracture where mortality rates were 20–21%. Females had an almost 30% lower risk of death within 1 year after hip fracture compared with males. Interpretation — Trends on fracture incidence for pelvic and femur fractures diverged considerably in Sweden between 2001 and 2016. While incidence rates for femur fractures (hip, femur shaft, and distal femur) decreased or remained constant during the studied years, pelvic fracture incidence increased. Mortality rates were different between the fractures, with the highest mortality among patients with hip fracture.

Abstract Amblyopia is a developmental disorder associated with abnormal visual experience during early childhood commonly arising from strabismus and/or anisometropia and leading to dysfunctions in visual cortex and to various visual deficits. The different forms of neuronal activity that are attenuated in amblyopia have been only partially characterized. In electrophysiological recordings of healthy human brain, the presentation of visual stimuli is associated with event-related activity and oscillatory responses. It has remained poorly understood whether these forms of activity are reduced in amblyopia and whether possible dysfunctions would arise from lower- or higher-order visual areas. We recorded neuronal activity with magnetoencephalography (MEG) from anisometropic amblyopic patients and control participants during two visual tasks presented separately for each eye and estimated neuronal activity from source-reconstructed MEG data. We investigated whether event-related and oscillatory responses would be reduced for amblyopia and localized their cortical sources. Oscillation amplitudes and evoked responses were reduced for stimuli presented to the amblyopic eye in higher-order visual areas and in parietal and prefrontal cortices. Importantly, the reduction of oscillation amplitudes but not that of evoked responses was correlated with decreased visual acuity in amblyopia. These results show that attenuated oscillatory responses are correlated with visual deficits in anisometric amblyopia.

Background and purpose — During recent years, spine surgery techniques have advanced, the population has become older, and multiple high-quality randomized controlled trials that support surgical treatment for degenerative spinal stenosis and spondylolisthesis have been published. We assess the incidence and trends in spine fusion and decompression surgery in Finland between 1997 and 2018. Patients and methods — We used nationwide data from the Finnish nationwide National Hospital Discharge Register. The study population covered all patients aged 20 years or over in Finland (5.5 million inhabitants) during a 22-year period from 1997 through 2018. All patients who underwent spinal decompression were included. Patients with both decompression and fusion codes were analyzed as fusions. Results — 76,673 lumbar spine decompressions and fusions were performed during the study period. The incidence of lumbar spine decompressions increased from 33 (95% CI 23–45) per 100,000 person-years in 1997 to 77 (CI 61–95) per 100,000 person-years in 2018. The incidence of lumbar spine fusions increased from 9 (CI 5–17) per 100,000 person-years in 1997 to 30 (CI 21–43) per 100,000 person-years in 2018. The increase in incidence of lumbar spinal fusions was highest among women aged over 75 years, with a 4-fold increase. Interpretation — The incidence of lumbar spine fusions and decompressions increased between 1997 and 2018 in Finland. These findings may be the result of the emergence of advanced surgical techniques but may also be the result of an aging population and increased evidence supporting the surgical treatment of various spinal pathologies.

ABSTRACT Seasonal human coronaviruses (HCoVs) cause respiratory infections, especially in children. Currently, the knowledge on early childhood seasonal coronavirus infections and the duration of antibody levels following the first infections is limited. Here we analyzed serological follow-up samples to estimate the rate of primary infection and reinfection(s) caused by seasonal coronaviruses in early childhood. Serum specimens were collected from 140 children at ages of 13, 24, and 36 months (1, 2, and 3 years), and IgG antibody levels against recombinant HCoV nucleoproteins (N) were measured by enzyme immunoassay (EIA). Altogether, 84% (118/140) of the children were seropositive for at least one seasonal coronavirus N by the age of 3 years. Cumulative seroprevalences for HCoVs 229E, HKU1, NL63, and OC43 increased by age, and they were 45%, 27%, 70%, and 44%, respectively, at the age of 3 years. Increased antibody levels between yearly samples indicated reinfections by 229E, NL63, and OC43 viruses in 20–48% of previously seropositive children by the age of 3 years. Antibody levels declined 54–73% or 31–77% during the year after seropositivity in children initially seropositive at 1 or 2 years of age, respectively, in case there was no reinfection. The correlation of 229E and NL63, and OC43 and HKU1 EIA results, suggested potential cross-reactivity between the N specific antibodies inside the coronavirus genera. The data shows that seasonal coronavirus infections and reinfections are common in early childhood and the antibody levels decline relatively rapidly. IMPORTANCE The rapid spread of COVID-19 requires better knowledge on the rate of coronavirus infections and coronavirus specific antibody responses in different population groups. In this work we analyzed changes in seasonal human coronavirus specific antibodies in young children participating in a prospective 3-year serological follow-up study. We show that based on seropositivity and changes in serum coronavirus antibody levels, coronavirus infections and reinfections are common in early childhood and the antibodies elicited by the infection decline relatively rapidly. These observations provide further information on the characteristics of humoral immune responses of coronavirus infections in children.
