Abstract

The article presents information on microphotometry in immunofloroscence. A specially sensitive version of the Reichert microphoto meter provides a means of obtaining accurate measurements of the emission of immunofluorescent microscopical preparations. The photometer has permitted determinations of titre of antisera, assessment of the validity of conventional visual estimation of fluorescence, and comparative studies of fluorescence intensity and fading under a variety of conditions. Microphotometry in immunofluorescence provides for some systems, such as gastric parietal cell staining by pernicious anaemia serum, an accurate means of measuring serum antibody titre over a limited range of values, but strictly standardized conditions are needed.

Abstract

After discussion of several technical problems regarding instrumentation of fluorescence microscopy and of the ways how to solve them, a device is described which makes it possible to examine fluorescent specimens both in positive and negative phase contrast (so-called simultaneous contrast fluorescence). Furthermore, light filtration and the relating questions are briefly mentioned. Finally, the resulting effects and the manifold fields of application of this new device are demonstrated with the aid of two examples and its advantages are discussed.

Abstract

There is compelling evidence that more diverse ecosystems deliver greater benefits to people, and these ecosystem services have become a key argument for biodiversity conservation. However, it is unclear how much biodiversity is needed to deliver ecosystem services in a cost-effective way. Here we show that, while the contribution of wild bees to crop production is significant, service delivery is restricted to a limited subset of all known bee species. Across crops, years and biogeographical regions, crop-visiting wild bee communities are dominated by a small number of common species, and threatened species are rarely observed on crops. Dominant crop pollinators persist under agricultural expansion and many are easily enhanced by simple conservation measures, suggesting that cost-effective management strategies to promote crop pollination should target a different set of species than management strategies to promote threatened bees. Conserving the biological diversity of bees therefore requires more than just ecosystem-service-based arguments.

Abstract

The global R* operation is a powerful method for computing renormalisation group functions. This technique, based on the principle of infrared rearrangement, allows to express all the ultraviolet counterterms in terms of massless propagator integrals. In this talk we present the main features of global R* and its application to the renormalisation of QCD. Abstract

We report on the magnetization of ensembles of etched quantum dots with a lateral diameter of 460 nm, which we prepared from InGaAs/InP heterostructures. The quantum dots exhibit 1/B-periodic de-Haas–van-Alphen-type oscillations in the magnetization M(B) for external magnetic fields B > 2 T, measured by torque magnetometry at 0.3 K. We compare the experimental data to model calculations assuming different confinement potentials and including ensemble broadening effects. The comparison shows that a hard wall potential with an edge depletion width of 100 nm explains the magnetic behavior. Beating patterns induced by Rashba spin–orbit interaction (SOI) as measured in unpatterned and nanopatterned InGaAs/InP heterostructures are not observed for the quantum dots. From our model we predict that signatures of SOI in the magnetization could be observed in larger dots in tilted magnetic fields.

Abstract

Physics letters / B 790, 436 - 443 (2019). doi:10.1016/j.physletb.2019.01.060, We present the first calculations of next-to-next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^4$ LO) contributions to anomalous dimensions of spin- N twist-2 operators in perturbative QCD. Specifically, we have obtained the respective non-singlet quark–quark anomalous dimensions at $N = 2$ and $N = 3$ to the fifth order in the strong coupling $α_s$ . These results set the scale for the N$^4$LO contributions to the evolution of the non-singlet quark distributions of hadrons outside the small-$x$ region, and facilitate a first approximate determination of the five-loop cusp anomalous dimension. While the N$^4$LO coefficients are larger than expected from the lower-order results, their inclusion stabilizes the perturbative expansions for three or more light flavours at a sub-percent accuracy for $α_s, Published by North-Holland Publ., Amsterdam

Abstract

Conversion of semi-natural habitats, such as field margins, fallows, hedgerows, grassland, woodlots and forests, to agricultural land could increase agricultural production and help meet rising global food demand. Yet, the extent to which such habitat loss would impact biodiversity and wild species is unknown. Here we survey species richness for four taxa (vascular plants, earthworms, spiders, wild bees) and agricultural yield across a range of arable, grassland, mixed, horticulture, permanent crop, for organic and non-organic agricultural land on 169 farms across 10 European regions. We find that semi-natural habitats currently constitute 23% of land area with 49% of species unique to these habitats. We estimate that conversion of semi-natural land that achieves a 10% increase in agricultural production will have the greatest impact on biodiversity in arable systems and the least impact in grassland systems, with organic practices having better species retention than non-organic practices. Our findings will help inform sustainable agricultural development.

Abstract

Wild bees, spiders, earthworms and plants contribute considerably to biodiversity in grasslands and fulfil vital ecological functions. They also provide valuable services to agriculture, such as pollination, pest control and maintenance of soil quality. We investigated the responses of wild bees, spiders, earthworms and plants to geographic location, agricultural management and surrounding landscape variables using a dataset of 357 grassland fields within 88 farms in six European regions. Regions and taxonomic groups were selected to have contrasting properties, in order to capture the multiple facets of European grasslands. Geographic location alone had a dominant effect on the fauna and flora communities. Depending on the taxonomic group, various agricultural management and surrounding landscape variables alone had an additional significant effect on observed species richness, rarefied species richness and/or abundance, but it was always small. Bee species richness and abundance decreased with increasing number of mechanical operations (e.g. cutting). Observed spider species richness and abundance were unrelated to measured aspects of agricultural management or to surrounding landscape variables, whereas rarefied species richness showed significant relations to nitrogen input, habitat diversity and amount of grassland habitats in the surroundings. Earthworm abundance increased with increasing nitrogen input but earthworm species richness did not. Observed plant species richness decreased with increasing nitrogen input and increased when there were woody habitats in the surroundings. Rarefied plant species richness decreased with mechanical operations. Investigating multiple regions, taxonomic groups and aspects of fauna and flora communities allowed identifying the main factors structuring communities, which is necessary for designing appropriate conservation measures and ensuring continued supply of services.
