251. The Role of Story Cards and the Wall in XP teams: A Distributed Cognition Perspective

Abstract

Much of the knowledge used within an XP team is tacit, i.e. it is hidden and intangible. Two tangible artefacts that carry information about the team’s work are the index cards which capture stories and tasks to be implemented and the wall where they are displayed (which we refer to as the ‘Wall’). It is widely acknowledged that these are key elements supporting the work of the XP team, but no systematic investigation of their role has been reported to date. In this paper, we focus on the use of these artefacts within one XP team. We use distributed cognition, a framework for analysing collaborative work, to explicate the information flows in, around and within the team that are supported by the index cards and the Wall. We then interrogate the models produced using this analysis to answer ‘what if’ questions.

Abstract

The importance of integrating software engineering and HCI methods has been recognised for many years. Agile development is a new approach to software engineering that explicitly champions an active role for the customer. Indeed, eXtreme Programming (XP), one of the most popular agile development methods, strives to include a real user(s) in the team who is located 'on-site' with software developers.In this panel we will debate whether or not agile software development provides an opportunity to integrate HCI and software engineering concerns. The panel members represent a wide cross-section of experiences in this area and will consider how agile development can help improve the current situation, consider specific example scenarios provided by the audience, and, with the audience's help, will decide whether agile development is an opportunity not to be missed, or just another fad that will pull the two communities further apart.

We explore the nature of the interaction between organisational culture and XP practice via three empirically-based case studies. The case studies cover a spectrum of organisational cultures. Our findings suggest that XP can thrive in a range of organisational cultures and that the interaction between organisational culture and XP can be complex & subtle, with consequences for practice.

Abstract

Designers immerse themselves in environments rich in inspiration. Previous research has tended to neglect the vital role of sources of inspiration in triggering and guiding designers' activities. This paper reports research which investigates the gathering of inspiration sources and exploration of ideas and hence attempts to understand how inspiration is harnessed. We conducted a progressive series of empirical studies looking at knitwear design: in situ observation; semi-structured interviews; constrained design tasks; and computational modelling. The paper proposes simple general accounts of observed design behaviour and shows how a simple parts-and-relations account can explicate aspects of subtlety and complexity in design.

Abstract

XP is a social activity as well as a technical activity. The social side of XP is emphasized typically in the values and principles which underlie the technical practices. However, the fieldwork studies we have carried out with mature XP teams have shown that the technical practices themselves are also intensely social: they have social dimensions that arise from and have consequences for the XP approach. In this paper, we report on elements of XP practice that show the social side of several XP practices, including test-first development, simple design, refactoring and on-site customer. We also illustrate the social side of the practices in combination through a thematic view of progress.

256. The type of evidence produced by empirical software engineers

Abstract

This paper reports on the research published between the years 1997 and 2003 inclusive in the journal of Empirical Software Engineering, drawing on the taxonomy developed by Glass et al. in [3]. We found that the research was somewhat narrow in topic with about half the papers focusing on measurement/metrics, review and inspection; that researchers were almost as interested in formulating as in evaluating; that hypothesis testing and laboratory experiments dominated evaluations; that research was not very likely to focus on people and extremely unlikely to refer to other disciplines. We discuss our findings in the context of making empirical software engineering more relevant to practitioners.

Abstract

While the importance of 'people factors' in software engineering has been recognised for over 25 years, few specific factors, and their impact on software engineering, have been identified. 'People factors' covers a wide and diverse set of issues. In this paper we focus on social factors, i.e. factors that arise from the various interactions that need to take place in order to develop software. We draw on three different studies we have conducted over the last 10 years to identify three specific factors and their impact on software development.

Abstract

XP emphasises underlying values as well as the more visible twelve practices. We explore the relationship between practices and values from two perspectives: empirical and theoretical. We present empirical evidence that the twelve practices create a community in which the XP values are supported and sustained. We also present models of culture from other domains which suggest that an alternative set of practices can produce a community with the same underlying values. We conclude that the twelve practices are both significant and not significant.

Abstract

A common and frequent complaint from software practitioners is that academic research doesn't meet their requirements or expectations. During XP 2010 in Trondheim this year, practitioners were asked to suggest research topics that they'd like to see addressed. Around 60 different suggestions were made. They were collected and displayed so that attendees at the conference could vote for their favorite topic, and from this we developed a prioritized backlog of research issues. This article presents the top ten issues according to the voting, discusses the range of themes across the complete set of suggestions, and poses several questions that need answering for this backlog to be processed. The Web extra is an erratum to the acknowledgments.

Abstract

Obsessive-compulsive (OCD) and delusional disorders (DD) have been recognised with increased frequency in recent years, and the propensity of some OCD subjects to become deluded has become a focus of interest. This study reports illness-specific demography along with measures of symptom severity and tests to assess schizotypal ideation, dysfunctional attitudes, attributional and attention bias in 30 patients with OCD, 29 with DD, 16 with OCD with delusions (OC-DD) and a 30-subject control group (CG). Obsessional features appeared before delusions in the OC-DD group, suggesting that OCD was the primary pathology. Delusions were more likely in subjects obsessional about one rather than multiple themes. There was some support for proposals that depression and schizotypy may bring out delusions in OCD and some evidence for the utility of categorising OCD according to the number of obsessions a subject has.

Abstract

Software development takes place within a rich cultural setting. To be successful, a programme aimed at improving software development processes needs to recognise this context and to make explicit the software practices as they are actually understood and applied by software developers. But what aspects of the context are relevant and how can they be identified? To begin addressing this question we have been studying the adoption and evolution of software quality management systems using techniques from the social sciences to collect data from five organisations of different sizes. This paper reports on our experiences of a week-long study of one organisation. In this study, we aimed to uncover implicit assumptions, values and beliefs within the community which were affecting (positively or negatively) the adoption and evolution of their software quality management system. We discuss our approach, summarise our findings, and reflect on the techniques used.

Abstract

Adequate, timely and effective consultation of relevant stakeholders is of paramount importance in the requirements engineering process. However, the thorny issue of making sure that all relevant stakeholders are consulted has received less attention than other areas which depend on it, such as scenario-based requirements, involving users in development, negotiating between different viewpoints and so on. The literature suggests examples of stakeholders, and categories of stakeholder, but does not provide help in identifying stakeholders for a specific system. In this paper, we discuss current work in stakeholder identification, propose an approach to identifying relevant stakeholders for a specific system, and propose future directions for the work.

Abstract

Background. A prospective epidemiology study evaluated the role of specific social and psychological variables in the prediction of depressive symptomatology and disorders following childbirth in a community sample. Measures of social support used previously in clinically depressed populations facilitated further comparison.Methods. Nulliparous pregnant women (N=507) were interviewed during pregnancy with the Interview Measure of Social Relationships (IMSR) and a contextual assessment of pregnancy-related support and adversity and 427 were followed up at 3 months postpartum with the 30-item GHQ, including six depression items. To establish the clinical representativeness of the GHQ, high GHQ scorers and a random subsample of low scorers were interviewed using the SCAN. Regression models were developed using the GHQ Depression scale (GHQ-D), the IMSR and other risk factor data.Results. GHQ-D after childbirth was predicted by lack of perceived support from members of the woman's primary group and lack of support in relation to the event becoming pregnant; this held even after controlling for antenatal depression, neuroticism, family and personal psychiatric history and adversity. Informant-rated deficits in provision of social support also predicted later depression. The size of the primary social network group previously found to be related to depression in women, did not predict depressive symptom development.Conclusion. Predictors of depressive symptom development differ from predictors of recovery from clinical depression in women. Interventions should be designed to reduce specific deficits in social support observed in particular study populations.

Abstract

This paper outlines DROOL, a novel knowledge representation scheme for supporting early stages of the design of multi-technology systems. The key idea behind DROOL is that mechatronic systems should be considered as interlocking flows of matter, energy and information. This provides a powerful framework for thinking about important aspects of conceptual design, and an equally powerful structure for organising a design representation scheme. The paper presents an object model for DROOL, and shows how the scheme describes design concepts at various levels of abstraction, in terms of component hierarchies and interlocking flows. The development of DROOL is part of the FACADE Project, whose aim is to develop intelligent computer tools to facilitate communication among designers with different specialties in concurrent engineering projects. The FACADE System comprises a suite of interfaces with different visual representations to support different conceptual design activities, with a single underlying product representation: DROOL. Development is concentrating on two interfaces with alternative visual representations in which designers can describe the flows of matter, energy and information in mechatronic systems: blob diagrams and concept arrays.

Abstract

One theory for the pattern of cognitive impairment associated with Parkinson's disease is that deficits are apparent only on tasks which rely on the internal control of attention, which in turn is assumed to place heavy demands on limited attentional resources. This theory is evaluated in the present study by examining the performance of Parkinson's disease subjects and matched healthy control subjects on a series of fluency tasks. In one condition, subjects were required to generate exemplars under standard verbal fluency instructions, i.e. either to a single letter or a single semantic category. In a related condition, subjects had to generate exemplars alternately using two fluency probes, which could either be from the same domain, i.e. letter-letter or category-category, or from different domains, i.e. category-letter. The requirement to alternate between fluency probes presumably places greater demands on internal attentional control mechanisms, and in a yoked condition, subjects were given external cue cards to minimize these extra demands. Overall, there was no evidence that Parkinson's disease subjects had a basic fluency deficit, nor were they impaired when required to alternate between probes of the same domain. A specific deficit did emerge, however, for the mixed alternating condition (i.e. category-letter), in which Parkinson's disease subjects produced significantly more perseverative errors and had a significantly lower output. The former of these was reversible by the provision of external cue cards, but the overall output was unchanged. These data do not support the theory of internal attentional control, at least as a general theory of cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease. To explain the observed pattern, we propose that Parkinson's disease is associated with: (i) a deficit in inhibitory attentional processes, and (ii) an impairment in the maintenance of those internal representations which control action.

Abstract

Background: Mental disorders and their symptoms are highly prevalent in the university student population, and the transition from secondary to tertiary education is associated with a rise in mental health problems. Existing web-based interventions for the prevention of common mental disorders in student populations often focus on just one disorder and have not been designed specifically for students. There is thus a need for transdiagnostic, student-specific preventative interventions that can be widely disseminated. This two-arm, parallel group randomised controlled trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a web-based transdiagnostic mental health problem prevention programme (PLUS) across several universities in four countries. Method: Students (N = 5550) will be recruited through a variety of channels and asked to complete a personality assessment to determine whether they are at high risk for developing common mental disorders. Students at high risk will be randomly allocated to either PLUS or a control intervention, which provides practical support around issues commonly experienced at university. Students at low risk will be allocated to the control intervention. Both intervention groups will be assessed at baseline, 4 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months after randomisation. Depression and generalised anxiety, assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire and the Generalised Anxiety Disorder scales, will form the primary outcomes in this study. Secondary outcome measures include alcohol and drug use, eating behaviour, self-esteem, and quality of life. The cost-effectiveness of the intervention will also be evaluated. Conclusions: This study will contribute to understanding the role of transdiagnostic indicated web-based interventions for the prevention of common mental disorders in university students. It will also be one of the first studies to investigate the cost-effectiveness of such interventions. Abstract

This paper considers how environmental threat may contribute to the child's use of avoidant strategies to regulate negative emotions, and how this may interact with high emotional reactivity to create vulnerability to conduct disorder symptoms. We report a study based on the hypothesis that interpreting others' behaviours in terms of their motives and emotions—using the intentional stance—promotes effective social action, but may lead to fear in threatful situations, and that inhibiting the intentional stance may reduce fear but promote conduct disorder symptoms. We assessed 5-year-olds' use of the intentional stance with an intentionality scale, contrasting high and low threat doll play scenarios. In a sample of 47 children of mothers with post-natal depression (PND) and 35 controls, children rated as securely attached with their mothers at the age of 18 months were better able to preserve the intentional stance than insecure children in high threat scenarios, but not in low threat scenarios. Girls had higher intentionality scores than boys across all scenarios. Only intentionality in the high threat scenario was associated with teacher-rated conduct disorder symptoms, and only in the children of women with PND. Intentionality mediated the associations between attachment security and gender and conduct disorder symptoms in the PND group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract This paper reports on an experience of using metaphor in qualitative research of software engineering in practice. Our project aimed to uncover non-technical factors affecting the adoption and evolution of Software Quality Management Systems (referred to here as the quality process). Previously we have reported the tensions we uncovered around the quality process in four companies, based on semi-structured interviews. This paper extends this work by applying metaphor to the results. We show how we were able to produce more general statements regarding the tensions and their amelioration, and then introduce results from a fifth company, which we compare against our general statements. We find that these statements are generally supported by results from this fifth company. Finally we present some reflections on our experience of using metaphor in this way. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a severe psychiatric condition and evidence on how to best treat it is limited. Objectives: This programme consists of seven integrated work packages (WPs) and aims to develop and test disseminable and cost-effective treatments to optimise management for people with AN across all stages of illness. Methods: WP1a used surveys, focus groups and a pre–post trial to develop and evaluate a training programme for school staff on eating disorders (EDs). WP1b used a randomised controlled trial (RCT) [International Standard Randomised Controlled Trial Number (ISRCTN) 42594993] to evaluate a prevention programme for EDs in schools. WP2a evaluated an inpatient treatment for AN using case reports, interviews and a quasi-experimental trial. WP2b used a RCT (ISRCTN67720902) to evaluate two outpatient psychological therapies for AN. WP3 used a RCT (ISRCTN06149665) to evaluate an intervention for carers of inpatients with AN. WP4 used actimetry, self-report and endocrine assessment to examine physical activity (PA) in AN. WP5 conducted a RCT (ISRCTN18274621) of an e-mail-guided relapse prevention programme for inpatients with AN. WP6 analysed cohort data to examine the effects of maternal EDs on fertility and their children’s diet and growth. WP7a examined clinical case notes to explore how access to specialist ED services affects care pathways and user experiences. Finally, WP7b used data from this programme and the British Cohort Study (1970) to identify the costs of services used by people with AN and to estimate annual costs of AN for England. Results: WP1a: a brief training programme improved knowledge, attitudes and confidence of school staff in managing EDs in school. WP1b: a teacher-delivered intervention was feasible and improved risk factors for EDs in adolescent girls. WP2a: both psychological therapies improved outcomes in outpatients with AN similarly, but patients preferred one of the treatments. WP2b: the inpatient treatment (Cognitive Remediation and Emotional Skills Training) was acceptable with perceived benefits by patients, but showed no benefits compared with treatment as usual (TAU). WP3: compared with TAU, the carer intervention improved a range of patient and carer outcomes, including carer burden and patient ED symptomatology. WP4: drive to exercise is tied to ED pathology and a desire to improve mood in AN patients. PA was not increased in these patients. WP5: compared with TAU, the e-mail-guided relapse prevention programme resulted in higher body mass index and lower distress in patients at 12 months after discharge. WP6: women with an ED had impaired fertility and their children had altered dietary and growth patterns compared with the children of women without an ED. WP7a: direct access to specialist ED services was associated with higher referral rates, lower admission rates, greater consistency of care and user satisfaction. WP7b: the annual costs of AN in England are estimated at between £45M and £230M for 2011. Conclusions: This programme has produced evidence to inform future intervention development and has developed interventions that can be disseminated to improve outcomes for individuals with AN. Directions for future research include RCTs with longer-term outcomes and sufficient power to examine mediators and moderators of change. Abstract

This paper investigates the potential for using technology to support the development of sensory and cognitive enrichment activities for captive elephants. It explores the usefulness of applying conceptual frameworks from interaction design and game design to the problem of developing species-specific smart toys that promote natural behaviours and provide stimulation. We adopted a Research through Design approach, and describe how scientific inquiry supported our design process, while the creation of artefacts guided our investigations into possible future solutions. Our fieldwork resulted in the development of an interactive prototype of an acoustic toy that elephants are able to control using interface elements constructed from a range of natural materials.

Abstract

There is wide acceptance in the software engineering field that industry and research can gain significantly from each other and there have been several initiatives to encourage collaboration between the two. However there are some often-quoted challenges in this kind of collaboration. For example, that the timescales of research and practice are incompatible, that research is not seen as relevant for practice, and that research demands a different kind of rigour than practice supports. These are complex challenges that are not always easy to overcome. Since the beginning of 2013 we have been using an approach designed to address some of these challenges and to bridge the gap between research and practice, specifically in the agile software development arena. So far we have collaborated successfully with three partners and have investigated three practitioner-driven challenges with agile. The model of collaboration that we adopted has evolved with the lessons learned in the first two collaborations and been modified for the third. In this paper we introduce the collaboration model, discuss how it addresses the collaboration challenges between research and practice and how it has evolved, and describe the lessons learned from our experience.

Abstract

EDAC (Eating Disorders and Autism Collaborative) is an innovative project aiming to increase research capacity by supporting collaboration in the fields of eating disorders and autism. EDAC comprises four integrated workstreams to co-produce interdisciplinary research, directed by Autistic individuals with lived experience of eating disorders. Workstream 1 will outline best collaborative practices, informing the research network. Workstream 2 will use arts-based methodologies to set research priorities, with emphasis on the perspectives of underrepresented groups. Workstream 3 will support interdisciplinary collaborations to develop innovative research. Finally, workstream 4 will maximise knowledge mobilisation with the aim of reducing barriers to rapid incorporation of research into policy and clinical practice. A core aim of EDAC is to embed a neurodiversity-affirming culture within eating disorder research and to support the development of a new generation of researchers conducting innovative and meaningful research with the potential to improve clinical outcomes.
