Abstract

The Global Consortium for the Classification of Fungi and fungus-like taxa is an international initiative of more than 550 mycologists to develop an electronic structure for the classification of these organisms. The members of the Consortium originate from 55 countries/regions worldwide, from a wide range of disciplines, and include senior, mid-career and early-career mycologists and plant pathologists. The Consortium will publish a biannual update of the Outline of Fungi and fungus-like taxa, to act as an international scheme for other scientists. Notes on all newly published taxa at or above the level of species will be prepared and published online on the Outline of Fungi website (https://www.outlineoffungi.org/), and these will be finally published in the biannual edition of the Outline of Fungi and fungus-like taxa. Comments on recent important taxonomic opinions on controversial topics will be included in the biannual outline. For example, 'to promote a more stable taxonomy in Fusarium given the divergences over its generic delimitation', or 'are there too many genera in the Boletales?' and even more importantly, 'what should be done with the tremendously diverse 'dark fungal taxa?' There are undeniable differences in mycologists' perceptions and opinions regarding species classification as well as the establishment of new species. Given the pluralistic nature of fungal taxonomy and its implications for species concepts and the nature of species, this consortium aims to provide a platform to better refine and stabilise fungal classification, taking into consideration views from different parties. In the future, a confidential voting system will be set up to gauge the opinions of all mycologists in the Consortium on important topics. The results of such surveys will be presented to the International Commission on the Taxonomy of Fungi (ICTF) and the Nomenclature Committee

Abstract

By introducing a columnar null-space region as the reference space, we design a radome that can extend the scanning angle of a phased array antenna (PAA) by a predetermined relationship (e.g. a linear relationship between the incident angle and steered output angle can be achieved). After some approximation, we only need two homogeneous materials to construct the proposed radome layer by layer. This kind of medium is called a null-space medium, which has been studied and fabricated for realizing hyper-lenses and some other devices. Numerical simulations verify the performance of our radome.

Abstract

Based on the form-invariant of Maxwell's equations under coordinate transformations, we extend the theory of transformation optics to transformation magneto-statics, which can design magnets through coordinate transformations. Some novel DC magnetic field illusions created by magnets (e.g. shirking magnets, cancelling magnets and overlapping magnets) are designed and verified by numerical simulations. Our research will open a new door to designing magnets and controlling DC magnetic fields.

Abstract

In this paper a novel compressor for static magnetic fields is proposed based on finite embedded transformation optics. When the DC magnetic field passes through the designed device, the magnetic field can be compressed inside the device. After it passes through the device, one can obtain an enhanced static magnetic field behind the output surface of the device (in a free space region). We can also combine our compressor with some other structures to get a higher static magnetic field enhancement in a free space region. In contrast with other devices based on transformation optics for enhancing static magnetic fields, our device is not a closed structure and thus has some special applications (e.g., for controlling magnetic nano-particles for gene and drag delivery). The designed compressor can be constructed by using currently available materials or DC meta-materials with positive permeability. Numerical simulation verifies good performance of our device.

Abstract

Graphene as a one-atom-thick platform for infrared metamaterial plays an important role in optical science and engineering. Here we study the unique properties of some plasmonic waveguides based on graphene nano-ribbon. It is found that a graphene ribbon of finite width leads to the occurrence of coupled edge mode. The single-mode region of a single freestanding graphene ribbon is identified at a fixed frequency of 30 THz. A low-loss waveguide structure, consisting of a graphene layer, a silica buffer layer and silicon substrate is proposed to reduce the propagation loss and obtain a high figure of merit for future integration of waveguide devices. Furthermore, two coupled ribbon configurations, namely, side-side coupling and top-bottom coupling, are investigated. We propose a compact passive device as a super-concentrator to create an extremely high uniform static magnetic field over 50T in a large two-dimensional free space from a weak background magnetic field. Such an amazing thing becomes possible for the first time, thanks to space-folded transformation and metamaterials for static magnetic fields. Finite element method (FEM) is utilized to verify the performance of the proposed device.

Abstract

We show magnetotransport results on Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ ($0.0 \leq x \leq 0.13$) single crystals. We identify the low temperature resistance step at 23 K in the parent compound with the onset of filamentary superconductivity (FLSC), which is suppressed by an applied magnetic field in a similar manner to the suppression of bulk superconductivity (SC) in doped samples. FLSC is found to persist across the phase diagram until the long range antiferromagnetic order is completely suppressed. A significant suppression of FLSC occurs for $0.02

Abstract

Superconducting triangular Nb wire networks with high normal-state resistance are fabricated by using a negative tone hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSQ) resist. Robust magnetoresistance oscillations are observed up to high magnetic fields and maintained at low temperatures, due to the eective reduction of wire dimensions. Well-defined dips appear at integral and rational values (1/2, 1/3, 1/4) of the reduced flux f = Phi/Phi_0, which is the first observation in the triangular wire networks. Abstract

Superconducting Nb thin films with rectangular arrays of submicron antidots have been systemically investigated by transport measurements. In low fields, the magnetoresistance curves demonstrate well-defined dips at integral and rational numbers of flux quanta per unit cell, which corresponds to a superconducting wire network-like regime. When the magnetic field is higher than a saturation field, interstitial vortices interrupt the collective oscillation in low fields and form vortex sublattice, where a larger magnetic field interval is observed. In higher fields, a crossover behavior from the interstitial sublattice state to a single-loop-like state is observed, characterized by oscillations with a period of $\Phi_0/\pi r_{eff}^2$, originating from the existence of edge superconducting states with a size $r_{eff}$ around the antidots., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We systematically investigate the optical behaviors of an amorphous silicon solar cell based on a core-shell nanograting structure. The horizontally propagating Bloch waves and Surface Plasmon Polariton (SPP) waves lead to significant absorption enhancements and consequently short-circuit current enhancements of this structure, compared with the conventional planar one. The perpendicular carrier collection makes this structure optically thick and electronically thin. An optimal design is achieved through full-field numerical simulation, and physical explanation is given. Our numerical results show that this configuration has ultrabroadband, omnidirectional and polarization-insensitive responses, and has a great potential in photovoltaics.

Abstract

We present transport measurement results on superconducting Nb films with diluted triangular arrays (honeycomb and kagom\'{e}) of holes. The patterned films have large disk-shaped interstitial regions even when the edge-to-edge separations between nearest neighboring holes are comparable to the coherence length. Changes in the field interval of two consecutive minima in the field dependent resistance $R(H)$ curves are observed. In the low field region, fine structures in the $R(H)$ and $T_c(H)$ curves are identified in both arrays. Comparison of experimental data with calculation results shows that these structures observed in honeycomb and kagom\'{e} hole arrays resemble those in wire networks with triangular and $T_3$ symmetries, respectively. Our findings suggest that even in these specified periodic hole arrays with very large interstitial regions, the low field fine structures are determined by the connectivity of the arrays

Abstract

It is shown that perfect absorption and giant amplification can be realized when a wave impinges on a special metamaterial layer with zero real parts of the permittivity and permeability. The imaginary parts of the permittivity and permeability remain nonzero, corresponding to finite loss or gain. Perfect absorption and giant magnification can still be achieved even if the thickness of the metamaterial layer is arbitrarily thin and the absolute imaginary parts of the permittivity and permeability are very small. Abstract

Metamaterials with simultaneous negative permittivity and negative permeability (also called left-handed materials) open new avenues to achieving unprecedented physical properties and functionality unattainable with naturally occurring materials. It has been predicted that a metamaterial slab waveguide can slow down light significantly (even to zero velocity) as the thickness of the core layer approaches a critical thickness. Here we show that coupling between the forward and backward modes becomes significant near the critical thickness due to the good matching of the wavevectors and modal profiles of the two modes. Physical explanation and impact of this coupling are given.

Abstract

Astrophysical jets play crucial roles in star formation and transporting angular momentum away from accretion discs, however, their collimation mechanism is still a subject of much debate due to the limitations of astronomical observational techniques and facilities. Here, a quasi-static toroidal magnetic field is generated through the interaction between lasers and a four-post nickel target, and our all-optical laboratory experiments reveal that a wide-angle plasma plume can be collimated in the presence of toroidal magnetic fields. Besides the confinement effects, the experiments show the jet can also be accelerated by the enhanced thermal pressure due to the toroidal magnetic fields compressing the flow. These findings are verified by radiation magneto-hydrodynamic simulations. The experimental results suggest certain astrophysical narrow plasma flows may be produced by the confinement of wide-angle winds through toroidal fields. Astrophysical jets are pivotal in the process of star formation, yet the mechanism responsible for their collimation remains a topic of intense debate, largely due to the constraints imposed by astronomical observational techniques and facilities. Abstract

The Late Triassic igneous rocks associated with post-collision are widely distributed in the East Kunlun Orogenic Belt (EKOB), but their specific dynamic mechanism and evolutional process are still controversial. To address these key issues, we investigated the geochronology and geochemistry of intermediate–felsic igneous rocks from the EKOB, including trachyandesite, rhyolite, porphyritic monzogranite, syenogranite, granite porphyry and crystalline tuff. Zircon U–Pb isotopes of these rocks indicate that they were formed between 231.1 and 215.8 Ma (i.e. Late Triassic). These igneous rocks have moderate to high SiO2 (60.29–79.56 wt%) and low mantle compatible element contents (e.g. Co: 0.37–12.62 ppm; Ni: 1.55–15.59 ppm), suggesting that continental crustal-derived material played an important role in their formation. Porphyritic monzogranite (231.1 Ma), syenogranite (228.1 Ma), trachyandesite (227.4 Ma) and rhyolite (215.8 Ma) have Nb/U (1.41–4.71) and Ce/Pb (1.48–6.19) ratios like that of the crust, with εHf(t) values (–1.31 to 2.26) and old two-stage model (TDM2) ages of 1340–1119 Ma, suggesting that they originated from the partial melting of a Mesoproterozoic crust with minor mantle material involved in their source. Crystalline tuff (224.6 Ma) and granite porphyry (222.3 Ma) have Nb/U (1.93–3.81) and Ce/Pb (0.30–3.18) ratios, negative εHf(t) values (–7.04 to −5.12) and old TDM2 ages (1703–1581 Ma) closer to those of crust, suggesting that they were derived from the partial melting of a Paleo–Mesoproterozoic continental crust without addition of mantle material. Based on our new data and published data, the Late Triassic igneous rocks from the EKOB can be divided into three stages, 236–227, 226–218 and 216–208 Ma, corresponding to slab break-off, lithospheric mantle delamination and thickened lower crust delamination, respectively. The intermediate–felsic igneous rocks from the East Kunlun Orogenic Belt are dated from 231.1 to 215.8 Ma (i.e. Late Triassic). These igneous rocks were derived from the partial melting of ancient continental crust. Abstract

In this paper, on account of an exponential-type velocity-dependent friction coefficient model, the difference between dynamic and static friction coefficients is considered to improve the one-dimensional micro-slip model. Incorporating with the finite element method, the corresponding dry friction contact element is developed to solve the frictionally constrained longitudinal vibration system with a distributed normal load. As high cycle fatigue failure is caused by excessive vibration stress, the maximal Mises stress instead of the displacement, energy or average power of the system is introduced to evaluate the vibration reduction effect of the system. Meanwhile, the normal load distribution coefficient is proposed to measure its convexity and concavity degree of the distribution of the normal load and the optimal normal load is redefined considering both the magnitude and distribution of the normal load. With Newmark- method, influences of both the magnitude and distribution of the normal load on the reduction rate and location of the maximal Mises stress of the dry friction constrained longitudinal vibration system are detailly studied. Numerical results indicate that considering the difference between the dynamic and static friction coefficients in the micro-slip model and introducing the maximum Mises stress to evaluate the vibration reduction effect are valuable in dynamical analysis of the dry friction constrained systems. Abstract

1. Mycoplasma synoviae (MS) is the primary causative agent of synovitis in avian species. In order to investigate the pathogenicity and immunological responses associated with MS in specific pathogen-free chicken embryos, a series of generations (F1, F95, F120, F160 and F200) of MS were introduced into 7-day-old SPF chicken embryos and subsequent mortality rates were recorded and analysed 2. Reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction was performed to detect expression of heat shock proteins HSP27, HSP40, HSP60, HSP70 and HSP90 and inflammatory factors interleukin (IL)-1β, caspase-1 and IL-18 in the tracheal tissue. 3. The results showed that the mortality rate of SPF chicken embryos decreased with an increase in the number of passages, with the highest being 80% (8/10) for F1 generation and the lowest being 10% (1/10) for F200. The expression of HSP27, IL-1β, HSP40, caspase-1, HSP70 and HSP90 showed a significant downregulation trend with an increase in the generation (except IL-18; P < 0.05). The HSP60 expression was significantly upregulated with increasing generations (P < 0.05). 4. A relationship between pathogenicity and the number of passages was observed and the decrease in pathogenicity appeared to be associated with HSP and genes related to inflammatory factors. Genetic engineering is commonly used to improve the agronomic traits of crops. However, genetic transformation in pumpkin remains a challenge. Conducting transformation trials, we accidentally created transgenic L1 periclinal chimeras in pumpkins.Using our modified Agrobacterium‐mediated transformation, we generated transgenic L1 periclinal chimeras which have high value in research on development of the meristem.Fluorescence observations of transformed L1 cells enabled us to reveal cell fates. These L1 cells can develop into stomata, epidermal hairs, seed coat, and epidermis of the root, stem, leaf, flower, and fruit. These periclinal chimeras can be propagated vegetatively with minimal risk of transgene flow.This study offers new perspectives on development of the meristem and a promising technique for creating transgenic periclinal chimeras in plants.
